MiGRIDS Lite is built around an energy balance algorithm first initiated by William "Bill" Thomson at the Alaska Village Electric Cooperative and further developed at the Alaska Center for Energy and Power by Nathan Green and Jeremy Vandermeer. A MATLAB script was created, and the results were found to be only a few percent different from more rigorous calculations done in MiGRIDS. Using the MATLAB script as a base, Bax Bond generalized it into a Python package leveraging the pandas package.
