[TRTLLM-17145][feat] Add the Muse Spark Open model - #21042
The change adds Muse Spark Open support across the PyTorch decoder, vision and audio towers, multimodal input processing, and checkpoint loading.
The decoder adds model-specific MoE routing, post-expert normalization, gated residual updates, logits processing, and parallelism and speculative-decoding validation. AUTO resolves to NCCL, NCCL_SYMMETRIC is rejected, and the decoder requires KV cache manager V2.
Vision and audio paths add local preprocessing, media-token expansion, encoder integration, and request-time vision segment limits. Checkpoint loaders classify and map weights and reject unaccounted keys.
The B200 test list adds the GPU model, MoE TP, and tower-load suites. The CPU list includes the tokenizer test. No Muse Spark manual-QA list entry appears in the inspected results.
Scope excludes fused kernels, serving extensions, documentation updates, and multi-GPU CI registration, as stated in the supplied PR objectives. The reported test results and pipeline failures are author-provided; no independent execution result or specific failing test is available here.
QA Engineer Review
The change adds decoder, MoE, checkpoint-format and loading, vision preprocessing and tower, audio, multimodal integration, admission, and profiling test suites. The B200 test list registers test_modeling_musespark_open.py, test_musespark_open_moe_tp.py, and test_musespark_open_tower_load.py; the CPU test list registers the tokenizer test.
Coverage includes supported and rejected configurations, preprocessing errors, prompt/media mismatches, weight accounting, multimodal merging, and parallel MoE behavior. Reference-data tests and multi-rank tests have stated skip conditions; the four-rank tests are not registered in multi-GPU CI.
The author reports 481 passed and 49 skipped on one GPU, 388 passed and 43 skipped with -m cpu_only, 21 four-rank MoE TP tests passed on every rank, and passing pre-commit. The author also reports successful text, image, and audio comparisons and serving tests. Separately, the supplied comments report two failed L0_MergeRequest_PR pipelines without identifying failing tests.
Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. The reported pipeline failures need investigation, and multi-rank CI registration and reference-data test availability remain follow-up items.

Description
This PR brings the Muse Spark Open model to main. It builds on the muse_spark config loading from #20643, and the code comes from feat/musespark-open, where @brnguyen2 wrote it. The whole model is in one PR, as the reviewers asked: the text decoder, the vision and audio towers, the multimodal wrapper and the weight loading. MuseSparkForConditionalGeneration, the checkpoint's architecture name, now resolves to a model.
Text decoder (modeling_musespark_open.py): 62 MoE decoder layers with a mix of sliding-window RoPE layers and full-attention NoPE layers. Each layer has gated-residual joins, a weight-first RMSNorm and a soft-capped LM head. The port keeps the reference composition only; the feature branch's fused Triton and CuTe DSL kernels, the fused expert finalize + all-reduce and the other opt-in performance switches are not in this PR.
MoE. The router runs in FP32. The experts work on a pooled 4096-wide stream and apply a post-expert RMSNorm to each expert's output before the weighted top-k sum. The MoE registers that per-expert finalize through create_moe(..., unfinalized_combine_fn=...), from [None][feat] MoE scheduler: optional finalize-before-combine and FP4 scale-layout contract fix #19749. ConfigurableMoE runs it on every do_finalize=False forward before any combine, so the norm sees whole expert outputs under both supported layouts: pure expert parallelism (MoE EP == attention TP), and pure MoE tensor parallelism without attention DP. Under MoE TP, the finalize first all-reduces each expert's FC2 partials in FP32. Other parallel layouts, pipeline parallelism and the speculative modes that need draft weights the checkpoint doesn't carry are rejected with ValueError.
All-reduce strategy.AUTO resolves to NCCL for this model, and any other explicit allreduce_strategy is used as configured for both the attention output projection and the MoE all-reduce. NCCL_SYMMETRIC is rejected: at TP4, AUTO's symmetric-memory path corrupts the attention output projection's small decode-step reduces, and the MoE all-reduce autotuner hangs warmup. On the feature branch before [TRTLLM-17131][chore] Clean up Muse Spark Open before the mergeback to main #20638, the model overrode the configured strategy internally.
KV cache. The model requires the V2 KV cache manager.
Vision (musespark_open_vision.py, musespark_open_vision_processing.py): the 50-layer NaViT tower at native resolution, with 2D RoPE and windowed attention in 37 of the 50 layers, followed by a 2x2 pixel shuffle and the projection to decoder width. Image and video preprocessing (2 fps sampling, per-clip timestamps) are local, since the pinned transformers has no processor for the model. With the default TRTLLM attention backend the tower runs on FLASHINFER, whose ragged segments need no quadratic workspace. The towers are never quantized: every perception tensor in the checkpoint is BF16.
Audio (musespark_open_audio.py): the wav_ae tower, a plain-PyTorch BF16 encoder over the raw 24 kHz mono waveform that emits one decoder row per 80 ms.
Multimodal wrapper (modeling_musespark_open_omni.py): MuseSparkForConditionalGeneration is a MultimodalModelMixin model and uses the mixin's forward, so startup encoder profiling covers the towers. Its input processor expands the chat template's media markers into each item's placeholder run. It publishes the prompt-ordered item metadata through get_mm_item_metadata (#20391), which the encoder uses to emit mixed image/video/audio rows in prompt order. An over-budget vision segment is rejected at admission through validate_multimodal_request_data. The text decoder registers no architecture of its own.
Weights: the HF weight mapper fuses the separate q/k/v/output-gate projections and unstacks the per-layer expert tensors. It accounts for every checkpoint key, so a key with no destination fails the load. The open-format renamer reads the released checkpoints' spelling, and muse_spark joins the model types that load safetensors lazily, so only the rank-local shard of each tensor is materialized.
Not in this PR, each tracked separately:
the reasoning parser, tool parser and serving extension;
breakable prefill CUDA graphs for the multimodal model;
the fused kernels and the fused expert finalize + all-reduce;
New unit tests under tests/unittest/_torch/modeling/:
CPU (marked cpu_only, picked up by the unittest/_torch/modeling entry in l0_cpu.yml): config schedule helpers, the vision tower and preprocessing, the audio tower, the input processor and the wrapper's contracts with the framework, prompt-ordered item metadata, weight-key accounting, the open-format renamer, the all-reduce strategy rule, the MoE finalize hook (registration, the scheduler's call site, partial-finalize sums), NVTX ranges and request admission.
GPU (added to l0_b200.yml): test_modeling_musespark_open.py (decoder modules, routing, the post-expert norm and the gated residual), test_musespark_open_moe_tp.py, and test_musespark_open_tower_load.py (the vision weight walk into a tiny built tower).
The four-rank MoE TP tests in test_musespark_open_moe_tp.py skip under a single process; registering them in a multi-GPU list follows with the CI PR. The vision-oracle, audio-golden and tokenizer tests skip unless their reference data is provided.
Results on GB300, with this branch's Python over a CI-built main wheel:
Unit tests.
One GPU, all Muse files: 481 passed, 49 skipped. The skips are the reference-data tests and the multi-rank cases.
-m cpu_only with no GPU visible, which is what l0_cpu selects: 388 passed, 43 skipped.
Four ranks: test_musespark_open_moe_tp.py passed 21 on every rank. Against the complete experts, TP4 gives relative L2 0.0024 and cosine 0.999997 for both BF16 and NVFP4 experts.
Forward comparison with feat/musespark-open. Both branches ran text, image and audio prompts through the same 6-layer cut of the NVFP4 checkpoint on one GPU, with identical prompt ids.

The feature branch runs fused kernels where this PR runs the reference composition. Most of the audio prompt's positions are audio rows.
trtllm-serve on four GB300 GPUs, with the NVFP4 checkpoint at TP4/EP4, TRTLLM attention and MoE, FP8 KV cache, chunked prefill and CUDA graphs:
Text, image, video (a three-colour clip) and mixed image+audio requests answer correctly. A LibriSpeech utterance comes back word for word.
All 2,360 checkpoint tensors load, and none are ignored.
The same requests on the feature branch give the same answers.
The audio tower is now built directly in its dtype, so the model initializes on the meta device. The feature branch falls back to a regular init.

Add MuseSparkForConditionalGeneration, the model behind the muse_spark
checkpoint whose config loading landed in NVIDIA#20643:
- The 62-layer MoE text decoder (modeling_musespark_open.py). The MoE
registers its post-expert-norm finalize as ConfigurableMoE's
unfinalized_combine_fn, so the norm runs on every expert output before
the top-k combine.
- The 50-layer NaViT vision tower with image and video preprocessing,
and the wav_ae audio tower.
- The input processor and the MultimodalModelMixin wrapper, which
publishes prompt-ordered item metadata through get_mm_item_metadata.
- The HF weight mapper, the open-format key renamer and lazy safetensors
loading for muse_spark.
- Unit tests: the CPU files are marked cpu_only and run in l0_cpu; the
GPU module tests run in l0_b200.

MuseSparkOpenVisionEncoder.forward reconstructs prompt order only when both vision_rows and waveforms are present. Add a test with item_refs=[("audio", 0), ("image", 0), ("audio", 1)] and stub vision and audio towers. Assert that the returned rows preserve this order.
Place the test next to the encoder row-order tests in tests/unittest/_torch/modeling/test_musespark_open_omni_textpath.py. A regression here can place audio rows at image positions without changing the total row count.

- Count resampled audio with librosa's own float order, so the
placeholder count matches the resampled waveform (88,200 samples at
44.1 kHz resample to 48,001).
- Take an audio item's sample rate from the item alone. The framework
counts audio items without the request's processor kwargs, so
preprocessing no longer reads a rate from them either.
- Move the GPU tower-load test out of the cpu_only module, which GPU
stages deselect, into test_musespark_open_tower_load.py.
- Test an audio and vision interleave in the encoder, the exact layer

Run the bare 24 kHz case without librosa.
If librosa is unavailable, this line skips bare-24k even though that case does not resample. A regression in the dependency-free audio path can then go unnoticed. Require librosa only for pair-16k and dict-44k1. As per path instructions, tests need “explicit, precise capability gating” for optional dependencies.

Compare the loaded positional embedding with the checkpoint tensor.
This assertion passes if tower.pos_embed contains any nonzero value, including an incorrect value. Key accounting does not establish that the loader copied the right tensor. Save the synthetic positional embedding before loading and compare it with tower.pos_embed afterward. As per path instructions, flag “overly weak, or non-observable assertions.”

The forward tests built the full-width BF16 audio tower on the CPU. Each
took 2-21 s on the x86 CPU runner but 464-1,398 s on the arm one, so the
unittest/_torch/modeling group overran its one-hour timeout there. The
tests check properties that hold at any width, so they now run the
shipped 1920-sample patch geometry with narrow stages, and the
construction-only tests build the full-width tower on the meta device.

Exercise both blocks in each lightweight forward test.
The lightweight row-count, clip-independence, and causality tests use one block per stage, while the production encoder uses two blocks per stage. The construction tests inspect parameter names and shapes but do not execute the blocks. The full-tower parity test can skip without optional checkpoint and golden data.
Retain the narrow widths and the default block counts.

This PR brings the Muse Spark Open model to
main. It builds on themuse_sparkconfig loading from #20643, and the code comes fromfeat/musespark-open, where @brnguyen2 wrote it. The whole model is in one PR, as the reviewers asked: the text decoder, the vision and audio towers, the multimodal wrapper and the weight loading.MuseSparkForConditionalGeneration, the checkpoint's architecture name, now resolves to a model.Text decoder (
modeling_musespark_open.py): 62 MoE decoder layers with a mix of sliding-window RoPE layers and full-attention NoPE layers. Each layer has gated-residual joins, a weight-first RMSNorm and a soft-capped LM head. The port keeps the reference composition only; the feature branch's fused Triton and CuTe DSL kernels, the fused expert finalize + all-reduce and the other opt-in performance switches are not in this PR.create_moe(..., unfinalized_combine_fn=...), from [None][feat] MoE scheduler: optional finalize-before-combine and FP4 scale-layout contract fix #19749.ConfigurableMoEruns it on everydo_finalize=Falseforward before any combine, so the norm sees whole expert outputs under both supported layouts: pure expert parallelism (MoE EP == attention TP), and pure MoE tensor parallelism without attention DP. Under MoE TP, the finalize first all-reduces each expert's FC2 partials in FP32. Other parallel layouts, pipeline parallelism and the speculative modes that need draft weights the checkpoint doesn't carry are rejected withValueError.AUTOresolves toNCCLfor this model, and any other explicitallreduce_strategyis used as configured for both the attention output projection and the MoE all-reduce.NCCL_SYMMETRICis rejected: at TP4, AUTO's symmetric-memory path corrupts the attention output projection's small decode-step reduces, and the MoE all-reduce autotuner hangs warmup. On the feature branch before [TRTLLM-17131][chore] Clean up Muse Spark Open before the mergeback to main #20638, the model overrode the configured strategy internally.Vision (
musespark_open_vision.py,musespark_open_vision_processing.py): the 50-layer NaViT tower at native resolution, with 2D RoPE and windowed attention in 37 of the 50 layers, followed by a 2x2 pixel shuffle and the projection to decoder width. Image and video preprocessing (2 fps sampling, per-clip timestamps) are local, since the pinnedtransformershas no processor for the model. With the default TRTLLM attention backend the tower runs on FLASHINFER, whose ragged segments need no quadratic workspace. The towers are never quantized: every perception tensor in the checkpoint is BF16.Audio (
musespark_open_audio.py): thewav_aetower, a plain-PyTorch BF16 encoder over the raw 24 kHz mono waveform that emits one decoder row per 80 ms.Multimodal wrapper (
modeling_musespark_open_omni.py):MuseSparkForConditionalGenerationis aMultimodalModelMixinmodel and uses the mixin'sforward, so startup encoder profiling covers the towers. Its input processor expands the chat template's media markers into each item's placeholder run. It publishes the prompt-ordered item metadata throughget_mm_item_metadata(#20391), which the encoder uses to emit mixed image/video/audio rows in prompt order. An over-budget vision segment is rejected at admission throughvalidate_multimodal_request_data. The text decoder registers no architecture of its own.Weights: the HF weight mapper fuses the separate q/k/v/output-gate projections and unstacks the per-layer expert tensors. It accounts for every checkpoint key, so a key with no destination fails the load. The open-format renamer reads the released checkpoints' spelling, and
muse_sparkjoins the model types that load safetensors lazily, so only the rank-local shard of each tensor is materialized. Not in this PR, each tracked separately:
supported-models.mdrow and theMuseSparkForConditionalGenerationentry inusage/architecture_allowlist.py, which [TRTLLM-17144][feat] Load the Muse Spark Open (muse_spark) config #20643 said would come with this PR, move to the docs PR once the checkpoint is public.Test Coverage
