Serving support for Muse Spark Open, plus the generic serving changes it needs, several of which affect every served model. The code comes from feat/musespark-open, where @brnguyen2 wrote it. The model itself is #21042. This PR imports nothing from it: the parsers and the serving extension are keyed on the public model_type: muse_spark, so the two PRs can merge in either order.
Changes that affect every served model
Wider reasoning_effort scale.ChatCompletionRequest.reasoning_effort also accepts minimal and xhigh, for chat templates that implement them. Harmony (gpt-oss) maps them to low and high, so harmony deployments keep working. The serve API reference (trtllm_serve_api.yaml) changes additively.
ServingExtension.normalize_reasoning_effort. It maps an effort that the serve derives from an API field onto the levels the model's template accepts. The fields are a top-level reasoning_effort, Anthropic output_config.effort and Responses reasoning.effort. Returning None leaves the template's default. A chat_template_kwargs value the client wrote is never rewritten. The default is the identity, so models without an extension are unchanged.
Responses API reasoning kwargs follow the active template. Before this PR, reasoning.effort always injected both reasoning_effort and thinking. Now the effort goes through the model's normalizer, and an injected key the template never reads is left out (unreferenced_chat_template_kwargs, rendered_hf_chat_template_source).
For a template the analysis cannot see into (one with {% include %}, {% import %} or {% extends %}, or one that does not parse), reasoning_effort is left out and the template keeps its own default. thinking is still injected, because the reasoning parsers consume it whatever the template reads.
Kwargs the client sends are untouched and stay subject to the render-site guard.
Responses API native tools. A request with namespace tool groups or explicit defer_loading flags reaches the chat template in that native form when the template reads deferred_render_mode. Otherwise it keeps the flattened function-tool view every template understands, as before. Flattening erases the deferral, so a deferred toolset would otherwise render eagerly with full schemas.
One render dispatch.apply_chat_template and rendered_hf_chat_template_source pick the renderer through one function, _resolve_render_dispatch: the DeepSeek tokenizers, a model that skips chat templates, a tokenizer-native template, or Jinja. apply_chat_template renders as before. The template-source lookup now also covers models that skip chat templates, and the two cannot drift apart.
trtllm-serve parser choices.--reasoning_parser and --tool_parser accept musespark. The CLI stability reference (trtllm_serve_cli.yaml) lists it.
Muse Spark Open
MuseSparkReasoningParser (musespark) for the header/message stream. Recipient routing (to=self, to=user, to=commentary, tool recipients) splits private reasoning from the answer, and header text is buffered so no fragment of the private channel reaches content. It sets needs_raw_special_tokens. Structured output places the constraint after a forced private reasoning message, on the answer body.
MuseSparkToolParser (musespark) for the <atem:function_calls> / <atem:invoke> format, streaming and non-streaming. A block inside a private to=self message is not a call. A parameter the tool schema declares as a string is kept verbatim, because the template writes string arguments as bare text and every other value as JSON.
Serving extension. It derives chat_template_kwargs.reasoning_effort from a request-level reasoning_effort and maps serve-derived efforts onto the template's levels. The template cannot turn reasoning off: it only sets a reasoning strength, from low to xhigh, and defaults to xhigh. So max maps to xhigh, and none and minimal map to low, the least reasoning it offers.
Auto selection.--reasoning_parser auto and --tool_parser auto resolve to musespark for model_type: muse_spark.
Test Coverage
New CPU tests, marked cpu_only and added to l0_cpu.yml:
test_musespark_reasoning_parser.py: batched and streamed routing, the stripped-token fallback, termination fuzzing, and import order.
test_musespark_tool_parser.py: streamed output matches the one-shot parse, also with several messages in one delta and with a tool block inside private reasoning.
test_musespark_serve_extensions.py: the effort schema; effort routing and normalization on the chat, Anthropic and Responses paths, including the Responses render; template-aware injection, including a template with an include; the harmony transform; structured-output placement.
test_musespark_chat_template.py: the checkpoint's own template through the render pipeline, including tool-call arguments round-tripping through the template and the tool parser. It needs Muse-Spark-Open-816B-A42B-NVFP4 under LLM_MODELS_ROOT, and the CI CPU stage has it: in pipeline #66727, on the previous revision, CPU-Generic-arm-1 ran this file and its tests passed rather than skipped.
Extended: test_chat_template_kwargs_guard.py (the template-source lookup, including the DeepSeek tokenizers and a model that skips chat templates), test_responses_custom_tools.py (native namespace tools through the Responses render) and test_reasoning_parser.py (muse_spark auto-resolution).
On a CI-built main wheel with this branch's Python, with the checkpoint under LLM_MODELS_ROOT:
-m cpu_only over the files above, the existing reasoning-parser, tool-parser, serving-extension, render and Responses tests, and the serve API stability test: 3,464 passed, 20 skipped. The skipped tests need a Harmony vocabulary or Kimi-K3 and Llama 3.1 files, which this environment lacks.
-m cpu_only over inputs/ and the render HTTP and standalone tests: 285 passed, 14 skipped. The trtllm-render launcher startup tests and a tiktoken test that downloads its vocabulary were left out: they cannot run in this environment, on main either.
The trtllm-serve CLI stability test: 4 passed.
generate_trtllm_serve_schemas.py --check: up to date. No serving YAML field changes.
End to end on this PR's first revision, with [TRTLLM-17145][feat] Add the Muse Spark Open model #21042's model files on top, trtllm-serve ran on four GB300 GPUs: the NVFP4 checkpoint at TP4/EP4, --reasoning_parser auto --tool_parser auto.
Both parsers auto-resolved to musespark.
Reasoning is split from the answer, for example content Paris with the reasoning separate.
A request-level reasoning_effort reaches the template.
JSON object and JSON schema output follow the reasoning, and tool calls come back with finish_reason: tool_calls.
Streaming, eight concurrent requests, a prompt over 8k tokens with chunked prefill, and KV block reuse all work. Image, video and speech requests answer correctly.
pre-commit passes on the changed files.

…s, effort scale, native tools
Generic serving changes:
- The chat request schema accepts the extended reasoning-effort scale
(minimal, xhigh); harmony maps both to its nearest level.
- ServingExtension.normalize_reasoning_effort maps an effort the serve
derives from API fields onto what the model's template accepts.
- The Responses API injects only the reasoning kwargs the active chat
template reads, and hands namespace tool groups and defer_loading
flags to templates that render them natively.
Muse Spark Open:
- MuseSparkReasoningParser for the header/message stream, the
<atem:function_calls> tool parser, and a serving extension that
routes and normalizes reasoning effort.
- --reasoning_parser auto and --tool_parser auto resolve them for
model_type muse_spark.

Walkthrough
This change adds Muse Spark reasoning and tool parsers, registers them for model-based serving, and routes reasoning-effort values through serving extensions. Responses preprocessing resolves chat-template source, filters injected template kwargs, and selects native deferred-tool structures when supported.

rendered_hf_chat_template_source returns None for DeepseekV32Tokenizer, DeepseekV4Tokenizer and DeepseekV41Tokenizer. No added test covers this branch. If the branch regresses, Responses preprocessing would run Jinja analysis on a template that the DeepSeek tokenizers never render. That would filter reasoning_effort and thinking incorrectly. Add a case to TestRenderedChatTemplateSource in tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_chat_template_kwargs_guard.py. Use a stub that subclasses one of these tokenizers, and assert that the function returns None.

Add a test for the muse_spark reasoning-parser mapping.
No test checks the muse_spark entry in MODEL_TYPE_TO_REASONING_PARSER. The only test that asserts this mapping is the existing laguna check in tests/unittest/llmapi/test_reasoning_parser.py. The other muse_spark references in tests/ set the model type for serve extensions, chat templates, and model config. None of them resolve a reasoning parser for muse_spark. A typo in the value, or a deleted entry, would pass the current suite. Automatic parser selection for Muse Spark Open could then fail or select the wrong parser.
Add an assertion next to the laguna check in tests/unittest/llmapi/test_reasoning_parser.py, around line 431. The assertion should confirm two things:
MODEL_TYPE_TO_REASONING_PARSER["muse_spark"] names a parser that ReasoningParserFactory can create.
The parser returned by resolve_auto_reasoning_parser for model_type="muse_spark" is a MuseSparkReasoningParser.

Test native tools through the Responses rendering path.
The current tests validate native tool dictionaries, but they do not render those dictionaries into a Responses prompt. Add a case in tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_responses_custom_tools.py that renders a namespace with an inherited defer_loading value and a member with explicit defer_loading=False. Assert that both distinct representations remain in the rendered prompt.
This is a material coverage gap under the production-code test instruction. The original nitpick classification understates it; treat it as a recommended test refactor.

…port order, tests
- Strip every routing header in a streamed delta that holds several
messages. The tool parser stripped one header per delta and emitted
the rest unscanned, so another message's header, and the to=self text
after it, reached the content.
- Import the model reasoning-parser modules by module name and re-export
their classes lazily, so importing a model module first no longer
fails on the circular import.
- Skip the chat-template test when LLM_MODELS_ROOT is unset, and fail
with the path when the tokenizer does not load. Name that test in its
l0_cpu comment.
- Test the import order, muse_spark auto-resolution, the DeepSeek
tokenizers' template source, single-delta tool-parser streaming, and
the Responses render path for native namespace tools and for the
normalized reasoning effort.
- Stub reasoning_chat_template_kwargs with its new keyword arguments in
the Responses render-caller test.
- Drop a duplicated copyright line.

The PR description is CodeRabbit's generated summary, not an author write-up. For a change this size please replace it with one that states, in your words, what a reader needs to know, in particular the three changes that affect every served model rather than just Muse Spark:
ChatCompletionRequest.reasoning_effort now accepts minimal and xhigh (api_stability reference updated), with Harmony mapping them to LOW/HIGH.
Responses-API reasoning kwargs are now filtered against the active template's referenced variables, and unreferenced_chat_template_kwargs fails closed on templates the analyzer cannot parse (include/import). Pre-PR those templates always received reasoning_effort/thinking; now they get neither. Worth a sentence and a regression test (see inline).
Responses requests with namespace tools or explicit defer_loading now render in the native tool form when the template reads deferred_render_mode.
Docs: nothing user-facing mentions Muse Spark. Every other model with dedicated parsers has a docs/source/deployment-guide/deployment-guide-for-<model>-on-trtllm.md, and docs/source/commands/trtllm-serve/trtllm-serve.rst documents the --reasoning_parser/--tool_parser auto resolution. Please add at least the parser names, the effort scale the template accepts, and the max/none/minimal mappings; also list minimal/xhigh wherever reasoning_effort values are documented.
CI signal: test_musespark_chat_template.py is the only new l0_cpu entry that needs checkpoint files (Muse-Spark-Open-816B-A42B-NVFP4 under LLM_MODELS_ROOT) and skips otherwise. Please confirm the CPU stage actually has that tokenizer, or the template-integration tests (the ones that prove the request-level effort reaches the template) give CI no signal. A tokenizer-only fixture directory would make this hermetic.
I checked the disaggregated router path: it renders through render_chat, so the extension normalizes the injected effort there too and router/worker prompts stay in parity. Good.
…l blocks, CLI reference
- Resolve the renderer once for apply_chat_template and
rendered_hf_chat_template_source, so the template-source lookup also
covers models that skip chat templates and cannot drift from the
render.
- Skip a to=self message before looking for a tool block on both parse
paths, so a block written in private reasoning is a call in neither,
also when it arrives in the same delta as its header.
- List the musespark parsers in the trtllm-serve CLI reference.
- State in the effort table that the template cannot turn reasoning off.
- Drop unused header constants from the reasoning parser.
- Test the injection for a template the analysis cannot see into, the
render dispatch for a model that skips chat templates, and tool-call
arguments round-tripping through the checkpoint's template.
