[#20986][fix] Cap decoded audio samples in AudioMediaIO - #20987
Partially addresses #20986. This PR caps decoded samples per audio input. Current main has a per-request decoded-media budget for gRPC; the OpenAI chat path still needs an aggregate limit for requests with many parts, so #20986 remains open.
On the measurement base 687359e2, AudioMediaIO decoded every audio content part with soundfile.read, returning the whole clip as float64. Compressed formats such as FLAC could turn a small request body into gigabytes of memory. Since then, main added a decoded-memory reservation path for gRPC; the unreserved path still needs a per-input cap.
Measured on main (687359e) with the chat content-part parser and AudioMediaIO from the tree:
After rebasing onto main at 04f92470, the unreserved path decodes through _read_audio_with_limit. It opens the input with soundfile.SoundFile and raises ValueError before reading when the header reports more than _MAX_AUDIO_SAMPLES samples (frames x channels). If the header does not state its length, it reads at most one frame beyond the limit. Unknown-length FLAC is read sequentially because libsndfile cannot seek reliably after a short read without a frame count. The reservation path also enforces the cap: known-length inputs reserve before allocation, while unknown-length inputs use bounded, budgeted chunks and reserve temporary space when concatenating them. openai_chat maps the ValueError to HTTP 400.
AudioMediaIO.load_base64 now decodes through _decode_base64_with_limit, like VideoMediaIO, so the base64 string is bounded before it is decoded.
_MAX_AUDIO_SAMPLES is _MAX_RESPONSE_BYTES // 2, about 100 Mi samples (800 MiB as float64). That is the sample count of 200 MiB of 16-bit PCM, far above what the current audio models accept per request (Whisper takes 30 s). The returned array, dtype, shape and sample rate are unchanged for inputs under the limit.
On pre-rebase head 6c9a732, the one-part request failed before decoding with Audio input decodes to more than 104857600 samples (frames x channels), the maximum allowed. Peak RSS stayed at 0.58 GiB (0.58 GiB before the request) and rejection took under 0.1 s in two runs. The first revision, which only bounded the read, took 9 to 14 s and reached 1.37 GiB. The measurement base took 67 to 84 s and reached 3.98 GiB. These measurements have not been rerun on the rebased head.
The offline helpers load_audio and async_load_audio in inputs/utils.py are left as they are, since they read caller-owned files. The number of media parts per request is also unbounded. That is a separate limit and is out of scope here.
test_audio_within_limit_matches_soundfile: load_bytes, load_base64 and load_file (bare path and file://) return the same array and rate as soundfile.read.
test_audio_over_limit_is_rejected: one sample over the limit raises ValueError on all three entry points.
test_audio_over_limit_in_header_is_rejected_before_reading: a file whose header is over the limit is rejected with no SoundFile.read call.
test_audio_with_memory_reservation_obeys_limit: the reservation path preserves an in-limit clip and rejects an oversized header before reading or reserving memory.
test_audio_of_unknown_length_over_limit_is_rejected: a FLAC stream with its STREAMINFO total zeroed is rejected by the bounded read.
test_unknown_length_audio_with_reservation: an in-limit unknown-length FLAC keeps its samples and sample rate with and without a reservation.
test_unknown_length_audio_over_limit_with_reservation: an oversized unknown-length FLAC is rejected after a bounded read, releasing the reservation.
test_audio_base64_over_encoded_limit_is_rejected: load_base64 rejects a base64 string over the encoded limit.
test_chat_audio_part_over_limit_is_rejected: an input_audio content part over the limit fails through parse_chat_message_content_part.
The test clips use nonzero samples that differ per channel. test_media_io.py is added to l0_cpu.yml, since no test list referenced it.
The tests patch _MAX_AUDIO_SAMPLES down to 4000 so they use tiny clips.
Pre-rebase local run (CPU, modules loaded from the tree): test_media_io.py 17 passed, tests/unittest/inputs/test_url_validation.py 42 passed. On updated head df91f5ae, focused checks for known and unknown frame counts, in-limit and oversized input, multi-chunk decoding, base64 size, and reservation accounting passed; Python syntax and git diff --check passed. The full unit module has not yet run on this head.

Dev Engineer Review
AudioMediaIO limits each input to _MAX_AUDIO_SAMPLES, calculated as _MAX_RESPONSE_BYTES // 2. The loader rejects known-length audio above the limit before reading. For unknown-length audio, it reads at most one frame beyond the limit before raising ValueError. Base64 input is size-limited before decoding.
The memory-reservation path checks known-length audio and uses bounded, chunked reads for unknown-length audio. The code commits retained reservations on success and releases them during cleanup. The cap can still allow about 800 MiB of float64 output per input. It does not impose an aggregate limit across multiple audio parts. The offline load_audio and async_load_audio helpers remain unchanged. Test execution results are not established by the supplied evidence.
QA Engineer Review
tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_media_io.py contains coverage for in-limit output compatibility; oversized inputs through byte, Base64, file, reservation, and chat paths; header-based rejection before reading; unknown-length reads; and reservation cleanup. The test-list file includes this module in test-db/l0_cpu.yml. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the per-input limit behavior; aggregate request limits remain out of scope.

Walkthrough
Audio loading now enforces a decoded-sample limit across supported input paths. Base64 loading also enforces an encoded-input limit. Tests cover bounded reads, memory reservation, and oversized audio inputs.

Summary
Bound audio decoding across input paths tensorrt_llm/inputs/media_io.py
Audio loading checks the decoded-sample limit. For files with known frame counts, it rejects oversized audio before reading. For unknown frame counts, it reads only through one frame beyond the limit before rejecting. The reservation-backed path decodes unknown-length streams in chunks and manages reservations during success and cleanup. Base64 loading uses the size-limited decoder.
Validate limits across audio inputs tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_media_io.py, tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml
Tests cover in-limit and oversized audio, memory reservations, unknown frame counts, Base64 input limits, and chat audio parsing. The CPU integration test list now includes the media I/O tests.
NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM#20986: The PR adds a decoded-sample cap to the AudioMediaIO loading path described in the issue. The aggregate budget for multiple audio parts remains out of scope.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to df91f
The per-input audio limits have no identified merge-blocking issue. Normal validation can proceed; the separate aggregate per-request limit remains outside this change.

Explanation
The title "[#20986][fix] Cap decoded audio samples in AudioMediaIO" follows the repository template with a GitHub issue ID and a type. It names the main change: a cap on decoded audio samples in AudioMediaIO. The raw summary confirms this is the core change in media_io.py, with the sample limit enforced on both the unreserved and reservation paths.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the required template areas. It explains the problem (unbounded decoding of compressed audio into float64), the solution (header-based rejection, bounded reads for unknown-length inputs, reservation-path cap, base64 bounding), and test coverage (named tests in TestAudioDecodedSizeLimit, the l0_cpu.yml addition, and local run results). It also includes the PR checklist. The description states that the issue is only partially addressed, which is clear. Some items are weaker: the test-coverage section lists tests well, but the description does not say whether any API label (api-compatible or api-breaking) applies, and the checklist is ticked without showing which items were checked. These gaps are minor and do not block merge.

@zhaoyangwang-nvidia thanks for the approval! Could you start the full CI with /bot run when you have a moment? The fork's workflow runs are also still waiting for maintainer approval ("action required"), so no CI result exists yet for head 6c9a73228d. The change is limited to tensorrt_llm/inputs/media_io.py plus its CPU unit test, which is listed in l0_cpu.yml.
@LeizhenZhang Thanks for the updates. This PR now has merge conflicts with main; please rebase and resolve them first. We need all required review approvals in place before running CI, so please make sure those are complete after updating the branch before requesting a CI run.
AudioMediaIO decoded every audio input in full with soundfile.read, with
no limit on the decoded size. A 465 KiB FLAC clip of silence decodes to a
3.4 GiB float64 array, so a single small chat request can use gigabytes
of host memory in the serving process.
Decode through _read_audio_with_limit, which reads at most one frame past
_MAX_AUDIO_SAMPLES samples (frames x channels) and raises ValueError
above it. The limit is _MAX_RESPONSE_BYTES // 2, so every 16-bit PCM file
that fits the download limit still decodes. Inputs under the limit
return the same array, dtype and sample rate as before.

Reject audio whose header reports more than _MAX_AUDIO_SAMPLES samples
before any samples are read, so an oversized file never allocates the
read buffer. The bounded read stays for files of unknown length.
Decode AudioMediaIO.load_base64 input with _decode_base64_with_limit,
which bounds the encoded string before decoding.
Drop the max(channels, 1) guard because libsndfile refuses to open a
file with fewer than one channel.
Tests use nonzero samples that differ per channel, cover the header
check, the unknown-length fallback and the base64 limit, and
test_media_io.py is added to l0_cpu.yml.

@zhaoyangwang-nvidia Rebased onto current main and resolved the audio decode conflict. New head: 63208392; GitHub now reports the PR as mergeable. The sample cap applies to both the unreserved decoder and the decoded-memory reservation path added on main; I added a regression test for the latter and updated the PR description with the new behavior and validation. The focused audio checks pass on this head. Could the required reviewers confirm their approvals on the updated branch? I will wait for all required approvals before requesting CI.
