feat(stablecoins): phase 1 — catalogue, coin mark, default currency and the Market lock - #894
Refs #884, phase 1. Phases 2–3 (payment methods by network, the trade hint) follow, so the issue stays open. Daemon side: MostroP2P/mostro#1083 (docs/PRICE_PROVIDERS.md §11.8); wire side: MostroP2P/protocol#89.
Type
feat
What changes and why
Stablecoins become order currencies the app knows: USDT, USDC and DOC join the catalogue pegged to USD, drawn with a neutral coin instead of a flag, grouped under a "Stablecoins" header in the three pickers, and allowed as the default currency. A node that does not quote a coin refuses every market order in it (§11.8), so for a stablecoin the create-order screen offers Market only when the node's rates event quotes the coin, and locks to Fixed otherwise. A fiat keeps failing open, as today (#337).
Design guide first: new rule DS-TYP-9 — a stablecoin has no flag and gets no emoji; its mark is a coin CurrencyMark paints, carrying its peg's sign, never an issuer logo (trademark) and never a glyph.
Catalogue:assets/data/fiat.json gains the three coins with peg: "USD"; one parser (parseFiatCatalogue) for both loaders. EURC is left out until a node quotes it.
One mark widget (lib/shared/widgets/currency_mark.dart) replaces the eight Text(flag) sites.
Default currency:validate_fiat_code accepts 3 to 5 upper-case ASCII letters.
Market lock: Rust now tells "no rates event" from "event without the code" (ExchangeRateLookup), which fetch_exchange_rate used to merge into None.
Affected flow
Create order (/order/add): currency picker, CurrencyInlineSelector/CurrencyRowSelector, PriceSection Market|Fixed (lib/features/order/widgets/{currency_section,price_section}.dart, providers/exchange_rate_provider.dart).
Order book cards, order filter dialog, My order, node cards (Settings selector and first-run node choice): the currency chip's mark.
Persisted:default_fiat_code may now hold a 4–5 letter code. No migration; an older build reading it shows it without a mark.
Bindings regenerated (lib/src/rust/, rust/src/frb_generated.rs) in the same commit as the API change; frb-generate.sh --check and check-generated.sh pass.
Wire: nothing changes; f is sent as before. A node without the code in fiat_currencies_accepted keeps refusing it.
Widgets:OrderListItem, OrderBookList and NodeCard lost their flags-map parameters (the mark reads the catalogue through Riverpod); tests that pumped them bare now wrap a ProviderScope (test/support/catalogue_fixtures.dart).
Localization:stablecoinsGroupHeader, marketPriceNotQuotedByNode in all seven locales.
Automation identifiers: none added or changed.
Design guide: DS-TYP-9 added; the DS-SPC-2 / DS-ICO-3 / DS-SHP-1 / DS-CMP-19 / DS-COL-11 debt in the touched classes is closed (OrderCurrencyChip, _CurrencyChip, the node card chip, currency_selector_dialog, order_filter, price_section), and §14 drops the premium-field entry. 11 goldens regenerated. No screen needed a whole-file migration.
Platforms tested
Pending: Linux desktop and Android, by the maintainer (see Manual testing).
Manual testing
Setup
flutter run -d linux from this branch, existing identity, against a node whose fiat_currencies_accepted is empty (or lists USDT) and which does not publish USDT in mostro-rates (any mostrod without #1083 or with the stablecoins provider off).
Steps
Maker: Book → + → tap the currency. Expected: the picker lists the fiats, then a STABLECOINS header with DOC, USDC, USDT, each drawn as a coin with $, not a flag or a box.
Maker: pick USDT. Expected: the Price control shows Market greyed out, Fixed selected, and "This node doesn't quote USDT at market price. Set a fixed amount in sats."
Maker: pick USD again. Expected: Market enabled and selected, the note gone (regression: fiat unchanged).
Maker: USDT, 100, fixed 150000 sats, a payment method, publish. Expected: My order shows the USDT chip with the coin; the Book card shows the same chip; the kind 38383 event carries f = USDT.
Any: Book → filter. Expected: the currency chips, then a STABLECOINS header with the three coins; selecting USDT filters to the order of step 4.
Any: Settings → Currency, choose USDT. Expected: accepted and shown back. (fails on main: refused as an invalid code)
Any: Settings → node selector. Expected: a node that lists USDT shows it as a coin chip; fiat chips keep their flags.
Quit and relaunch the app. Expected: the default currency is still USDT, and the create-order screen opens on it locked to Fixed.
Not covered
A node that quotes USDT (needs mostrod #1083 deployed): the Market branch of the lock is covered by price_section_test.dart only. iOS and macOS. These steps have not yet been run by a person.
Screenshots
Pending (maintainer): the currency picker before/after, the Price section locked, a Book card with a USDT order; light and dark. Rules touched: DS-TYP-8, DS-TYP-9, DS-SPC-2, DS-ICO-3, DS-SHP-1, DS-CMP-19, DS-COL-11.
Automated tests
test/shared/utils/fiat_currencies_test.dart: the parser reads peg; the bundled catalogue has the three coins, each pegged to a known fiat, and every fiat has a flag; one fiat.json loader in lib/; picker rows' order and header.
test/shared/widgets/currency_mark_test.dart: every peg entry draws a StablecoinCoin and no text (never the flags font); a fiat draws its flag; an unknown code draws nothing; the gap collapses with it.
test/features/settings/widgets/currency_selector_dialog_test.dart: grouped list; search keeps or drops the header.
test/features/order/widgets/price_section_test.dart: NotQuoted locks Market and moves to Fixed; NoRates leaves Market; a fiat is never locked.
flag_font_test.dart still holds for every flag (entries without one are skipped).
flutter test: +3118 ~4: All tests passed! · cargo test: 1466 passed, 0 failed · flutter analyze: No issues found · dart tool/design_check.dart: no breaks in the 17 files touched.
Checklist
cd rust && cargo fmt --check && cargo clippy -- -D warnings && cargo test pass locally — clippy and tests pass; fmt --check reports only drift already on main (bond.rs, disputes.rs, settings.rs:604, rates.rs:218), none in this diff's hunks
dart format --set-exit-if-changed ., flutter analyze and flutter test pass locally — analyze and test pass; six touched files are not formatted under Dart 3.11.5, as on main (formatter drift), left alone to keep the diff readable
Changed rust/src/api/ or an .arb: regenerated code committed in the same commit
New or changed user-facing text: every locale updated, no hardcoded strings
Changed an automation identifier: none changed
Protocol or transport change: none

Written with Claude Code from #884 and mostrod §11.8. Decisions taken for this phase: a neutral painted coin with the peg's sign (no issuer logos), EURC out of the catalogue, codes up to 5 letters. A range order in a locked coin ends with both segments disabled and the lock note shown (the daemon would refuse it either way); not special-cased here. The maintainer runs the manual steps and takes the screenshots.
Currency pickers and filters now group stablecoins separately and display currency marks for fiat and stablecoin entries.
DOC, USDC, and USDT are available in the currency catalogue and can be selected for orders.
Bug Fixes
Market pricing is unavailable for stablecoins a selected node does not quote. Pricing switches to Fixed, range mode is disabled, and guidance explains how to enter a fixed sats amount.
Market-order publishing stays disabled while a stablecoin quote is pending. Fiat currencies and nodes without rates remain unaffected.
Localization
Added translated stablecoin labels and market-pricing guidance in supported languages.
The pull request adds stablecoin catalogue entries and shared currency marks, groups stablecoins in pickers, and distinguishes missing rate data from unquoted currencies. Order creation blocks Market pricing for unquoted stablecoins.
Changes
Stablecoin catalogue and marks
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Catalogue and shared currency marks assets/data/fiat.json, lib/shared/utils/fiat_currencies.dart, lib/shared/widgets/currency_*, test/shared/*, .specify/DESIGN_SYSTEM.md
The catalogue adds DOC, USDC, and USDT with USD pegs. Shared utilities group stablecoins and shared widgets render fiat flags or neutral stablecoin coin marks.
For a stablecoin lookup reported as NotQuoted, the form switches from Market to Fixed and disables Market and range modes. Publishing remains blocked while a stablecoin lookup is pending.

A stablecoin has no flag, and an emoji in its place would fall to the OS
font (a box on Linux and Windows): the mark is a neutral coin painted by
CurrencyMark, never an issuer's logo. Also drops the price_section premium
field from the §14 debt, which the next commits close.
USDT, USDC and DOC join assets/data/fiat.json with the fiat they are
pegged to (peg: USD) and no flag. One parser (parseFiatCatalogue) feeds
both the create-order picker and the Settings default-currency dialog,
which loses its own loader. CurrencyMark replaces every Text(flag) site:
the flag for a fiat, a painted coin carrying the peg's sign for a
stablecoin (DS-TYP-9), nothing for an unknown code. The three pickers
(create order, Settings, order book filter) group the coins under a
Stablecoins header, localized in the seven languages.
The Settings dialog and the filter dialog migrate off AppColors to the
redesign palette as the design check asks for touched code; the currency
chips move to on-scale padding (goldens regenerated).
…oted
validate_fiat_code takes 3 to 5 upper-case ASCII letters, so a stablecoin
code (USDT, EURC) can be the default currency; doc comments stop calling
the code ISO 4217. lookup_exchange_rate returns ExchangeRateLookup, which
tells a node that publishes no rates event (NoRates: fail open as #337)
from an event that lacks the code (NotQuoted: the node refuses a market
order in a stablecoin). fetch_exchange_rate keeps its Option on top of it.
Bindings regenerated.
exchangeRateLookupProvider carries the node's answer; exchangeRateProvider
reads it. For a stablecoin whose lookup is NotQuoted, PriceSection
disables the Market segment, moves the control to Fixed and says why
(marketPriceNotQuotedByNode). A fiat, and a node with no rates event, are
left as today. Closes the price section's own design debt on the way
(icon 14, gap 12, padding 14, radius 8, the premium field's borders).

exchangeRateLookupProvider watches the active node, and on a node
change Riverpod keeps the previous node's answer while the new lookup
loads (AsyncLoading with a value, isReloading). marketQuotePendingProvider
read "no value yet" as pending, so a coin node A quoted let a market
order through while node B, which may refuse it, had not answered. It
now reads AsyncLoading; a refresh of the same node keeps its state type
and is not pending.
The orders contract named fetch_exchange_rate, which returns a bare
rate; NotQuoted comes from lookup_exchange_rate.

The orders contract said `NoRates` meant "no event at all".
