What changes and why

This is phase 6, PR 6.1 of the Mostro reputation portability plan (MostroP2P/mostro docs/REPUTATION_PORTABILITY.md). lnp2pBot becomes an issuer of reputation attestations (kind 38388, MostroP2P/protocol#74): a user asks the bot, and the bot signs a statement of the reputation they earned here, addressed to their Mostro identity, which a Mostro instance can import. This PR lays the groundwork; the /start rep_… flow is 6.2.

  • REPUTATION_ISSUER_SK (.env-sample, loadIssuerKey in util/reputation.ts) is the bot's issuer identity, and deliberately not NOSTR_SK. Operators add its public key to their Mostro trust list.
    • Unset or empty: export is disabled.
    • Set but not 64 hex characters, outside the curve order, or equal to NOSTR_SK: loading throws, so the bot refuses to start with it.
  • User.reputation_exported_to / reputation_exported_at hold the Mostro identity the account's reputation is bound to (the 6.2 binding writes it atomically) and the UTC day of the last export. The day is stored without time of day, so the record cannot time-correlate an export with an import.
  • isEligible(user, firstTrade) requires all of:
    • not banned;
    • trades_completed ≥ 10;
    • total_reviews ≥ 5;
    • a first trade date on record.
  • firstTradeSince(user) is one aggregate over the user's SUCCESS orders as buyer or seller. It returns the UTC day of the earliest effective date: when the order was taken, or its creation for older orders without taken_at. It returns null without one. The minimum is taken over the effective date, not the creation date, so an old listing taken late cannot hide a newer one taken first.
  • Sunset mode is the case export exists for: lnp2pBot is being retired. connectSunsetDatabase in util/reputation.ts, called from startSunsetBot in app.ts:
    • With REPUTATION_ISSUER_SK set, the sunset startup connects to MongoDB. There is still no LN connection, invoice resubscription, monitoring or scheduled job.
    • Without the key, sunset mode stays database-free, exactly as today.
    • If MongoDB is not configured or cannot be reached, the error is logged and the bot starts anyway. The sunset notice keeps working, and the export (feat(reputation): export reputation to Mostro #933) answers that it is unavailable. Failing startup instead would take the notice down with it, and the notice is the one thing sunset mode exists to show.
    • A malformed issuer key still stops startup.
    • .env-sample documents this under SUNSET_MODE and REPUTATION_ISSUER_SK.

Tests

tests/util/reputation.spec.ts, 18 cases:

  • Key loading:
    • unset and empty;
    • valid;
    • malformed;
    • off the curve;
    • equal to NOSTR_SK in another case.
  • Eligibility:
    • both floors met;
    • banned;
    • below each floor;
    • no first trade date.
  • First trade query:
    • its filter (string party ids, since aggregate() does not cast), sort and limit;
    • none on record;
    • the taken day;
    • the creation-day fallback;
    • an order created first but taken last does not win.
    • Also checked by hand against a throwaway MongoDB 6: crossing orders, a legacy order without taken_at, and a user with no trades.
  • Sunset database:
    • no key: no connection;
    • key: connects, and a connection error is logged, not thrown;
    • no database configured: falls back to plain sunset;
    • malformed key: throws.
npx tsc && npm test 256 passing
npm run lint                clean

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added optional reputation attestation export using a dedicated key. Export is disabled when the key is unset.
    • Reputation export eligibility requires an account to be unbanned, have at least 10 completed trades and 5 ratings, and have a recorded first trade. The earliest successful trade determines the first-trade date.
    • In sunset mode, the service continues replying with a discontinuation notice without starting the Lightning node or scheduled jobs. The database is only used for reputation export when configured; database connection failures do not stop the notice.

Phase 6, PR 6.1 of the Mostro reputation portability plan: the
groundwork for lnp2pBot to issue reputation attestations (kind 38388),
so a user can carry the reputation earned here into a Mostro instance.

- REPUTATION_ISSUER_SK: a dedicated issuer key, never NOSTR_SK. Unset
  disables export; set but malformed, off the curve or equal to
  NOSTR_SK refuses to load.
- User gains reputation_exported_to and reputation_exported_at
  (the bound Mostro identity, and the UTC day of the last export).
- isEligible: not banned, 10 completed trades, 5 ratings received, and
  a first trade date on record. firstTradeSince: the UTC day the
  user's earliest SUCCESS order was taken.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change adds reputation-attestation utilities for issuer-key validation, eligibility checks, and first-trade date lookup. It adds user export-tracking fields and updates sunset-mode startup to connect to MongoDB only when an issuer key is configured.

Changes

Reputation Attestation and Sunset Startup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Issuer key configuration and validation
.env-sample, util/reputation.ts, tests/util/reputation.spec.ts
Documents the optional issuer key and validates its format, separation from NOSTR_SK, and secp256k1 validity. Tests cover unset, valid, and rejected keys.
Eligibility and first-trade data
models/user.ts, util/reputation.ts, tests/util/reputation.spec.ts
Adds user fields for export destination and timestamp. Adds eligibility thresholds, UTC day truncation, and first-trade lookup using taken_at or created_at. Tests cover eligibility and trade-date selection.
Conditional sunset database startup
app.ts, .env-sample, util/reputation.ts, tests/util/reputation.spec.ts
Sunset startup attempts a MongoDB connection when an issuer key is configured and selects its notice based on whether connection setup was initiated. Tests cover skipped connections and connection errors.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3d532

If the database is unavailable in sunset mode, the error is logged and the shutdown notice keeps working. One structural cleanup remains: move the sunset database startup code into the app entrypoint. It is not a functional blocker.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 98d08

Current exposure is limited: no production reputation-signing flow was found. Key validation is implemented, but startup enforcement and secure identity binding are not yet established. Those guarantees need validation before export is enabled.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Effective exposure currently consists of operator configuration and additive per-account persistence capacity. No production signing sink or reputation-based authorization consumer was found, so expansion into Mostro's issuer-trust boundary is not demonstrated by this revision.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The loader accepts operator-supplied configuration, returns null for an empty value, validates 64-character hexadecimal syntax and secp256k1 validity, and rejects equality with the normalized NOSTR_SK secret. It returns key bytes without signing or publishing an event.
  • observed — The existing user update identified during the mutation check derives the account from the Telegram sender and writes only default_community_id. It does not accept an arbitrary update object capable of setting the new reputation fields.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — No binding or export state transition was found. Destination ownership, one-destination binding, atomicity, idempotency, interruption handling, cleanup, and recovery therefore remain future workflow obligations rather than guarantees supplied by the nullable schema fields.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before activating export, connect issuer validation to the intended startup lifecycle and require issuer availability and eligibility before signing. Implement authenticated destination binding with atomic conditional writes, day-precision timestamps, and explicit repeated-request, concurrency, and recovery behavior.

A rabbit checks the issuer key,
Then finds the trades beneath the tree.
The UTC day marks where they start,
While export fields keep record parts.
If sunset calls, the notice stays,
And Mongo waits when keys are away.

firstTradeSince sorted SUCCESS orders by created_at but returned the
chosen order's taken_at, so an old listing taken late could hide a
newer one taken first and push `since` forward. Select the earliest
effective date (taken_at, else created_at) with an aggregate instead,
matching on string party ids since aggregate() does not cast.

Reputation export has to keep working while the bot runs in
SUNSET_MODE, the case it exists for. When REPUTATION_ISSUER_SK is set,
the sunset startup now connects to MongoDB; there is still no LN
connection, invoice resubscription, monitoring or scheduled job.
Without the key, sunset mode stays database-free.

A database that is not configured or cannot be reached is logged as an
error and the bot starts anyway, so the sunset notice keeps working. A
malformed issuer key still stops startup.

Keep sunset startup orchestration in app.ts.

connectSunsetDatabase decides whether to connect to MongoDB and registers connection handlers. Move that orchestration into startSunsetBot; keep issuer-key validation in the utility. This follows the repository requirement to centralize startup logic in app.ts.
