[WRONG BRANCH] release: promote frozen tip 007dbfd895 to main as 2.96.0 - #8069
Promotes the frozen dev candidate 007dbfd8950a6af778297b15c858863420e69171 to main as stable 2.96.0. The promotion head cb487a1f57 merges in main ancestry (9df4f6a564, v2.95.0) with the ours strategy, so its tree is exactly the candidate tree (git diff 007dbfd895 cb487a1f57 is empty). Candidate version sources already say 2.96.0; dev moves to 2.97.0 through the dev-version-bump.yml pull request, which merges before publication.
The candidate carries 13 commits since 2.95.0 (main..candidate): 8 fixes, 1 feature, 1 perf, 2 test repairs and the 2.96.0 dev line opening (#8033). Highlights: per-account Pool installation identity isolation (#8065), Anthropic Ultra quota windows and subscription names (#8055), safety_identifier stripped at the canonical ChatGPT forward destination (#8030), rejected reasoning toggle stripped from native passthrough (#8025), server-issued batch preserved for role suggestion --apply (#8022), bounded Qoder CN PNG raster dimensions (#8021), Grok disable/shutdown honored during startup sync (#8017), incremental Ollama NDJSON byte counting (#8015), Meta excluded for direct hosted tool choices in combos (#8010), opt-in MCP tools for stored Codex queues (#7999), and deterministic Windows test repairs (#8062, #8058).
Verification
Batch 007dbfd895: workflow_dispatch Cross-platform CI lane=all41262132337 concluded success: 35 of 39 jobs succeeded, including all four macOS shards, macOS control and all eleven Windows shards; the 4 skipped jobs are PR-only gates and unexpanded matrix placeholders.
Every PR in this window landed with exact-head required CI success and a maintainer-integration record; security-boundary PRs carry a dedicated security review on the PR.
bun scripts/release-version-sources.ts check 2.96.0 on the candidate: all 4 version sources carry 2.96.0. v2.96.0 has no tag, no GitHub release and no npm publication (npm latest is 2.95.0). origin/main is an ancestor of this head.
Push-event Cross-platform CI and Service lifecycle on the merged SHA gate release.yml.
Checklist
Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added an opt-in messaging command that can list stored Codex threads and queue text to a selected thread.
Anthropic accounts now display subscription labels, including Ultra, and show available usage windows. Account rows omit email addresses and account IDs.
Improvements
Required tool choices now skip incompatible destinations before sending.
Role suggestion batches are limited to 50 changed roles, with clearer reporting when an operation is interrupted.
Qoder CN image inputs now have explicit image-dimension and total-pixel limits.
…8022)
* fix(cli): batch role suggestion history writes
* fix(cli): bound role suggestion apply and report partial results
Refuse more than ROLE_HISTORY_LIMIT changed suggestions before any role
PUT so a recorded operation remains one listable history batch. Preserve
server-issued batch reuse for accepted operations.
Report confirmed writes, an unconfirmed role, unattempted roles and the
known batch before propagating the original failure. Do not replay or
roll back a request whose response may have been lost.
Add real-handler coverage for the 50/51 boundary, whole-batch restore,
no-op exclusions, partial refusal and lost acknowledgements. Document
the apply limit and recovery contract.
* docs(cli): clarify localized role apply limits and validate durable batches
…rd destination (#8030)
* fix(adapters): strip safety_identifier at the canonical ChatGPT forward destination
droid's BYOK path attaches safety_identifier to any custom model whose name
fuzzy-matches its built-in OpenAI registry (gpt-6.1-sol etc.), with no
isCustomModel guard, unlike prompt_cache_retention/prompt_cache_key. The
canonical ChatGPT Codex backend runs a strict parameter allowlist and rejects
it with {"detail":"Unsupported parameter: safety_identifier"}, surfacing as
a 400 BYOK error through every registry-matched model pointed at ocx.
Add it to the canonical-only drop list in stripUnsupportedForwardParams,
beside metadata and max_output_tokens. The official OpenAI API-key surface and
noncanonical gateways keep the field (it is a real platform parameter).
Reproduced live: POST /v1/responses with safety_identifier -> 400 before the
fix; regression tests pin strip-on-canonical and keep-on-everywhere-else.
* docs(runtime): the canonical safety_identifier strip is source-agnostic
CodeRabbit finding on b0e5719: the doc claimed the parameter reaches the
canonical surface only from third-party clients (droid's registry-matched
BYOK). Any Responses client may send the public OpenAI-platform parameter
explicitly; the strip removes it regardless of which client supplied it.
The other-destination retention sentences are unchanged.
…es (#8055)
* fix(anthropic): honor active subscription usage windows
Prefer authoritative limits rows for shared and model-scoped quota, suppress
inactive legacy duplicates, and share source selection with raw decisions.
Accept Ultra and claude-prefixed profile tiers without granting entitlements.
Cover null session windows, active/inactive Fable admission, pool selection,
legacy quotas, unknown tiers and conservative cooldown recovery. Update the
owning structure and public docs. Independent Sol security/correctness review
reported no findings for the complete diff.
* feat(anthropic): show subscription names beside Claude account quotas
* fix(gui): keep Claude account identities out of account dialogs
* fix(gui): suppress Claude emails in catalog account status

Walkthrough
This pull request updates Anthropic quota handling and account displays, adds account-specific Codex Pool identity projection, introduces stored-thread queue tools over MCP, and changes mandatory tool-choice routing and role-suggestion batch handling. It also updates runtime checks, input limits, tests, documentation, and package versions.

Anthropic usage reads select recognized limits rows ahead of legacy values and retain legacy fallback for unrepresented windows. Plan helpers map known subscription names, including max_20x to Ultra, and preserve other normalized names. Tests cover active limits, model-scoped quotas, inactive windows, and plan labels.

Hosted and MCP selectors are validated as mandatory choices. Combo eligibility checks Chat model policy and skips targets that cannot preserve a mandatory choice. Registered OpenAI virtual models are checked using the resolved wire model.
The CLI refuses more than 50 changed roles before writing. Accepted changes are written sequentially in one history batch. Failure output identifies confirmed, uncertain, and unattempted writes without automatic retry or rollback.

This release has a few real edge-case bugs. A request that selects the hosted tool search can be rejected when a same-named function exists. Combos can send a mandatory allowed-tools choice to a Chat target that loses its MCP entry. Stored Codex credentials with a blank account ID can be dropped from the account store. Fix these before promoting to stable, or accept them explicitly.

Fail fast when --codex-home is not an existing directory.
The usage text and the docs require an "absolute-existing-home". parseQueueMcpArgs checks only that the path is absolute. runMessageMcpCommand does not check that the home exists. A mistyped home therefore starts a healthy-looking MCP server. The tool list works. Every codex_threads and codex_queue_message call then returns not_sent with the opaque code unsupported_queue_mcp_environment from queueMcpRpc.
Add a statSync(...).isDirectory() check before the dynamic import. Exit with a clear stderr message when the check fails. Do not validate the Codex executable here. validatedCodexExecInvocationAsync already owns that check.

Preserve invalid legacy records during account-store reads and writes.
isCredential rejects chatgptAccountId: "". normalizeRecord then returns undefined, so loadCodexAccountRecordStoreResult silently removes the record from the in-memory store. Any later credential mutation writes this filtered store and can delete the record, including its refresh token.
inspectLocalCodexCredentialSlots also throws Invalid Codex credential record for the same data, so local-credential inventory can fail. Preserve invalid legacy records as inert entries during loading and persistence, while excluding them from active credential use.

Extract the forwarded-header copy rule into one shared helper.
The predicate value || (value !== null && (name === "x-codex-installation-id" || name === "x-codex-turn-metadata")) is copied at Lines 1842 and 1952, and again at src/server/responses/compact.ts Line 1749. Other FORWARD_HEADERS loops use a different rule:
compact.ts Lines 398, 493, 567 and 915 use value !== null.
ws-bridge.ts Line 131 and mergeCodexSelectedHeaders use value !== null.
transport.ts Line 63 uses value === null.
The rule decides when an empty string survives. A divergence between copies causes an empty authorization, chatgpt-account-id or session_id header to reach upstream on one path and not on another. Add a single exported function next to FORWARD_HEADERS in src/codex/forward-transport-headers.ts:
constEMPTY_PRESERVING=newSet([CODEX_INSTALLATION_ID_HEADER,CODEX_TURN_METADATA_HEADER]);exportfunctionshouldForwardHeaderValue(name: string,value: string|null): value is string{returnvalue!==null&&(value!==""||EMPTY_PRESERVING.has(name));}
Then replace each inline predicate with if (shouldForwardHeaderValue(name, value)) selected.set(name, value);.

Minor · Stability & Availability · Quick win
Pool identity fails closed for every request if the home directory does not support hard links.
Secret publication depends on linkSync(temporary, path). Any error other than EEXIST is rethrown. codexInstallationIdForAccount then converts it to CodexInstallationIdUnavailableError. The caller returns HTTP 503.
Trigger: OPENCODEX_HOME on a file system without hard links, such as FAT/exFAT or some network and container mounts. These file systems fail with EPERM, ENOTSUP, ENOSYS or EXDEV. Codex sends an installation header on normal traffic. Every Pool request therefore fails with 503 until the user moves the home directory.
Line 57 has a second problem. If unlinkSync(temporary) throws, for example from antivirus locking on Windows, the finally block replaces a successful readSecret result with an error. It also leaves the temporary file behind.
Keep the no-replace guarantee. Fall back to an exclusive create when hard links are unavailable, and make temporary-file cleanup best effort.

Update the secret publication flow around linkSync to fall back to an exclusive
create when hard links are unavailable, while preserving first-writer-wins
behavior and propagating unrelated errors. Make temporary-file cleanup around
unlinkSync best effort so cleanup failures do not replace the readSecret result.

Calculate the deadline before starting the helper.
budget.remainingMs(12_000) runs after spawn and before the close handler is registered. If the budget expires or is cancelled in this window, the outer catch returns queue_mcp_preflight_failed without cleanup for the already spawned helper.
The separate launch-error hang is not established here. Node documents that close follows error after a failed spawn, while the available Bun documentation does not specify a different event contract.

Calculate the remaining deadline before calling spawn in the helper-launch flow,
then reuse that value when creating the timeout. This ensures budget expiration
or cancellation occurs before a child process exists and preserves cleanup for
any spawned helper.

Preserve the hosted tool_search identity during resolution.
When the request declares hosted tool_search and a namespaced function with the bare name tool_search, both tools become candidates for the bare selector. mapToolChoice reduces the hosted { type: "tool_search" } choice to { name: "tool_search" }, so parseRequest throws before dispatch.
Carry the hosted selector identity through resolution, or resolve it directly to the toolSearch catalog entry. Add a regression test with both declarations.

Reject the Chat target when an MCP allowed-tool entry has no name.
For tool_choice{type: "allowed_tools", mode: "required", tools: [function X, {type: "mcp", server_label: "docs", name: null}]}, chatCanPreserveMandatoryToolChoice accepts the Chat target. mapToolChoice drops the nameless MCP entry and returns {allowedTools: ["X"], mode: "required"}. The Chat adapter then sends only function X, so the docs MCP server cannot be selected for that request. Reject the Chat target in this case so a destination that can preserve the MCP entry is used.

The race test can pass without reaching the checkpoint it targets. Add a synchronization point.
The only assertion is expect(injectCalls).toBe(0). That value is also 0 in three cases where syncGrokConfig never runs its post-catalog admission check:
ensureGrokFenceMatchesDesired returns early because siblingOfLivePort() reads real process state.
The initial shouldSyncGrokOnStart check fails.
fetchAllModels is never entered.
In each case the test stays green and the second admit() check is never exercised.
Record that the catalog fetch was entered, and assert it before flipping the config. ensureGrokFenceMatchesDesired runs synchronously up to the awaited fetchAllModels, so the assertion is deterministic. The test then fails loudly if the early-exit branches are hit.
Based on learnings: a regression test for a race should use an explicit synchronization point after the internal checkpoint it needs, instead of relying on a "not yet finished" signal.

In the race test around ensureGrokFenceMatchesDesired, record when the

flipping the config. Keep the existing completion and injectCalls assertions so
the test verifies the post-catalog admission check rather than passing through
an early-exit path.

The loop runs over ["claude_pro", "default_claude_max_5x"]. The test body never uses tier except in the test name. Both iterations send the same body and make the same assertions.
The names claim per-tier coverage, but no tier input reaches the code. The two tests are identical.
Remove the loop and keep one test with a neutral name. Alternatively, send each tier through resolveAnthropicAccountIdentity and assert the resulting plan, as the test at Lines 105-113 does.
