Summary

Fixes #8160.

When planning an OpenAI web search sidecar request, mergeCodexSelectedHeaders carries forward request headers including x-openai-internal-codex-responses-lite. This header causes upstream ChatGPT backend endpoints to reject the sidecar request with a 400 Bad Request error.

This PR deletes CODEX_RESPONSES_LITE_HEADER (x-openai-internal-codex-responses-lite) from the merged headers map in runWebSearch before initiating the fetch request.

Verification

  • Added regression test issue #8160 - OpenAI search helper strips responses-lite marker from merged headers in tests/web-search/web-search.test.ts.
  • Ran bun test tests/web-search/web-search.test.ts (all 79 tests passed).
  • Verified via standalone reproduction script that the lite header is removed from upstream fetch requests while preserving selected auth and forward headers.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults.

Review readiness checklist

This PR stays in draft until every box below is ticked. Tick all four boxes once the requirements are met:

  • Required local validation passed; commands, results, and any full-suite exception are documented.

  • I pushed my PR to a recent dev commit (at most 10 behind; a maintainer may still ask for the exact tip before merge).

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Web search requests no longer forward an internal request header. Selected account information and other provider headers continue to be forwarded.
    • Added coverage to verify that header handling preserves the intended request information.

Walkthrough

The web-search executor removes the Responses Lite marker from merged forwarded headers before sending its request. A mocked-fetch test verifies that the marker is absent and that the selected account ID and another provider header remain.

runWebSearch removes CODEX_RESPONSES_LITE_HEADER from merged forwarded headers. The regression test checks that the marker is absent from the outgoing request while chatgpt-account-id and a custom provider header remain.

The fix removes the Lite marker while retaining unrelated headers. It is mergeable; a configured-only regression test would strengthen coverage.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(web-search): strip responses-lite header from OpenAI sidecar requests" matches the main change. The executor now removes x-openai-internal-codex-responses-lite from merged forwarded headers before runWebSearch builds the request headers, and the regression test for issue #8160 covers that behavior. The title names the header, the component, and the purpose of the change. It does not cover the test addition, which is expected for a title.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#8160] requires the classic web-search helper to remove x-openai-internal-codex-responses-lite from merged headers, regardless of whether the value comes from provider configuration or selected request headers. src/web-search/executor.ts merges the headers, deletes CODEX_RESPONSES_LITE_HEADER, and then builds the fetch headers. Headers normalizes header names, so the deletion is case-insensitive. The regression test in tests/web-search/web-search.test.ts supplies the marker through both sources, verifies that the marker is absent, and verifies that chatgpt-account-id and x-custom-test remain present.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The pull request changes only src/web-search/executor.ts and tests/web-search/web-search.test.ts. The source change removes the mismatched marker before the sidecar fetch. The test directly verifies the linked issue behavior and preservation of unrelated headers. No unrelated production behavior or cleanup is present.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 2 files.

P1 Badge Update the owning structure docs for the header exception

The ownership rule in src/AGENTS.md requires that “every doc listed for an area is updated in the same change that changes the area.” structure/INDEX.md:522 assigns src/web-search/ to structure/runtime.md, structure/providers-and-adapters.md, and structure/providers/anthropic-progress.md, but none is updated here. This leaves the new exception to selected-header forwarding undocumented in the architecture source of truth. Update the mapped documents to record that OpenAI search helpers strip the Responses Lite marker after merging configured and selected headers, with a reference to the regression coverage.

Add a test where the Lite marker appears only in the configured headers.

The test at tests/web-search/web-search.test.ts:747-752 places the marker in both the configured headers and the selected new Headers({...}). A change that deletes the marker only when selected headers carry it would still pass. Issue #8160 names the configured providers.openai.headers entry as the trigger, so this case is the primary reproduction. Add a second test in the same style. Keep the configured headers with "x-openai-internal-codex-responses-lite": "true". Omit the marker from the selected new Headers({...}). Assert that the captured outgoing headers do not have x-openai-internal-codex-responses-lite.
