= `(nostos …)` — repo-deed vocabulary for the way back to what a repo depends on
:toc:

Status:: vocabulary, draft v0.1 (2026-10-08). Grammar unchanged: this is a `clause`
under the normative link:../spec/abnf/deed.abnf[deed.abnf] v1.1.0.
Name:: _nostos_ is Greek for the journey home. The clause records, for each thing a
repo depends on, every way back to where that thing came from.
Fixture:: link:../tools/fixtures/valid/nostos-clause_chora.deed[nostos-clause_chora.deed].

A repo depends on things it did not make: runtimes, compilers, tools, SDKs and
libraries, and outside software, games, datasets and models. For each of them,
`(nostos …)` records how to fetch it again, whole or in part, and how to check a
fetch. It also records where its documentation refreshes from, what else its maker
publishes, which feeds announce changes, and which channels reach the maker.
Those changes include security advisories, releases, end of life, add-ons and
funding appeals.

The clause only describes. It does not install, update, alert or send anything.
Those are jobs for readers, and the obligations below bind them.

As with link:updates.adoc[`(updates …)`] and link:maturity.adoc[`(maturity …)`], no
production `estate_chora.deed` exists yet, so this page is the declaration. The
terms below move into that file's `(vocabulary …)` clause verbatim when it lands.

== Where it appears

Only in a `repo-deed` (`<repo>_chora.deed`), at most once, as a direct child of
the form. It holds one or more `(artefact …)` clauses. **No clause means nothing
is declared.** A reader must not fill the gap from `.tool-versions`, `mise.toml`
or `build/guix.scm`.

== `(artefact …)` — one thing the repo depends on

|===
| Term | Value | Required | Meaning

| `:name` | STRING | yes | The name the artefact's maker uses (`"graalvm-community"`, `"just"`). Unique within the clause.

Make :covers resolve to one byte sequence.

An omitted :covers targets the primary archive, but the vocabulary permits no primary. Also, part:<class> can match multiple parts when the same class has different platforms. Require a primary for the default target and make part coverage identify one part.

Review comment at @1-formats/deed/vocabulary/nostos.adoc at line 80:
Update the `:covers` vocabulary entry to require a primary archive when coverage
is omitted, and make `part:` coverage identify exactly one part, including its
platform when classes are shared across platforms.

| `:checked` | STRING, `YYYY-MM-DD` | no | When the value was last confirmed against the maker.

Signatures are not part of v0.1. A later version adds them, aligned with the
Anchor/Provenance/Leaf tiers of `action-trust-layers`. Until then a signature
field is an unknown field, and so an error.

=== `(part …)` — pieces that can be fetched alone

[cols="2,3,1,5",options="header"]

| `:platform` | STRING | no | Target, for platform-specific pieces (`"x86_64-linux"`).
| `:on-demand` | BOOLEAN | no | `#t`: fetch only when asked for, never with the artefact. Default `#f`.
|===

=== `(docs …)` — documentation that refreshes on its own

Modelled on PowerShell's `Update-Help` and `HelpInfoURI`: a stable address that
says which documentation version is current, so docs can be refreshed without
fetching the artefact again.

[cols="2,3,1,5",options="header"]
|===
| Field | Value | Required | Rule

| `:help-info-url` | STRING | yes | Where the current docs version is announced.

|===
| Field | Value | Required | Rule

| `:vendor` | STRING | yes | Same value as the artefact's `:vendor`.
| `:discovery-url` | STRING | no | Where the maker lists everything they publish.

| `:kind` | SYMBOL, one of the kinds below | yes |
| `:url` | STRING | yes |
| `:ecosystem` | STRING | no | For `security`: the OSV ecosystem name (`"crates.io"`, `"Maven"`).
| `:package` | STRING | no | For `security`: the name that ecosystem indexes the artefact under.
|===

`security`:: Advisories and CVEs that may affect the pinned version.
`release`:: New versions. With a `:version-scheme` other than `opaque`, a reader can
classify each one as major, minor or patch.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not infer major, minor, or patch for every non-opaque scheme.

calver and pep440 do not define a universal major/minor/patch classification. Restrict this claim to semver, or define a classification rule for each scheme.

== Reader obligations

* An unknown field or clause anywhere inside `(nostos …)` is an error.
* A symbol outside its closed set is an error, never mapped to a nearby value. A
string where a symbol is expected (`:kind "tool"`) is an error.
* Two `(nostos …)` clauses in one deed is an error. So are two artefacts with the
same `:name`, and an artefact with no `(fetch …)`.
* More than one `(fetch …)` with `:primary #t` is an error. With none, there is no
primary: a reader that needs one reports that, and never picks.
* An artefact is verified only when a reader hashes the bytes covered by an
applicable `(digest …)` clause with its `:algo` and the result matches its
`:value`. Digest presence alone is not sufficient. If no digest exists, or a
digest does not match the bytes it covers, the artefact is unverified.
* **Refresh before send.** Before a reader sends anything to a `(contact …)`, it
fetches `:found-at` and confirms the channel is still published there. If it is
not, the reader sends nothing and reports the drift.
Comment thread
hyperpolymath marked this conversation as resolved.
* A reader MUST apply an outbound-fetch policy to `:found-at`. The policy MUST
reject loopback, link-local, and private-network destinations after DNS
resolution and after every redirect.
* When an artefact is also pinned in `.tool-versions`, `mise.toml` or
`build/guix.scm` and the versions disagree, that is drift. A reader reports it,
and never resolves it by choosing one side.

Compare pins with the manager-specific :ref when present.

:ref records the version string a manager uses when it differs from :version. A reader that compares a tool-file pin directly with :version can report an intentional manager-specific value as drift. State that the reader compares the pin with the matching fetch's :ref when present, and otherwise with :version.

Update the artefact drift rule to compare each tool-file pin with the matching
fetch’s :ref when present, falling back to :version only when :ref is absent;
preserve the existing behavior of reporting drift without resolving conflicting
values.

== Relationship to other files

`(updates …)`:: Governs what automation may do to a repo's dependencies.
`(nostos …)` records where to look. A `release` feed may inform an update, but it
never arms one.
`.tool-versions`, `mise.toml`, `build/guix.scm`:: These stay the files tools read.
Today they are kept by hand, and `(nostos …)` only describes them. Once the planned
kcX projection compiler exists, `(nostos …)` is meant to be one of its inputs. A
fetch with `:manager asdf` or `mise` would become a `.tool-versions` line, plus a
`mise.toml` `[plugins]` entry when the name is not in mise's registry. A fetch with
`:manager guix` would become a package in `build/guix.scm`. None of this is
implemented.
odds-and-sods-package-manager:: Planned to import `.tool-versions` and `mise.toml`
into `(nostos …)` clauses, and to read `(feed …)` for change detection.

== Horizon (not decided here)

* **A machine-level record.** A workstation's own tools have no home: none of the
four doc-heads fits. Giving them one needs an owner ruling, and a new doc-head
is a grammar change.
* **Per-person interest.** Which feed kinds a person wants to hear about belongs in
a separate document, not in a repo deed.
* **Signatures** in `(digest …)`, as above.
* **Identifiers.** v0.1 has no ID field: artefacts are keyed by `:name`. If one is
added it is an ADR-008 profile C literal, `#u8"<domain>:<name>"`, which
deed.abnf v1.1.0 already admits.
* **Enforcement.** No reader enforces these obligations yet. They are declared
here, not implemented.
