Description

Partially fixes https://nvbugs/6448152. This PR fixes the second drop on the case, from ~893 to ~460 output tok/s, which started at #19960. The earlier C++-vs-Python transceiver gap is tracked separately.

#19960 added CuteDslFusedMoE.quantize_input_async. It moves the NVFP4 input quantization onto the MoE aux stream so that, for small decode batches, it overlaps top-k and moe_sort. The scheduler also takes this path for every no-comm CuteDSL NVFP4 forward, including prefill. On a DeepSeek-R1 FP4 context worker with PP4 and 128K-token context steps, the quantized activations and their scaling factors are GB-sized. record_stream across the main and aux streams keeps the caching allocator from reusing those blocks right away, so the allocator falls back to cudaFree + cudaMalloc with a device synchronization. The PP stages then stall on one another.

nsys on the context worker (PP rank 0, 4 profiled iterations), ToT with vs. without async quantization:

  • cudaEventSynchronize: 7.38 s (90 calls) vs. 2.30 s (8 calls)
  • cudaFree: 52 calls, 0.36 s vs. 0 calls
  • NCCL SendRecv kernel time: 2.98 s vs. 0.02 s (the next stage waits)

This change runs the async quantization only for batches of up to 1024 tokens (ASYNC_INPUT_QUANT_MAX_TOKENS). Larger batches take the existing synchronous quantize_input path. Decode batches keep the overlap: the in-tree Kimi K3 decode configs it was added for run at most 896 tokens per step. The TLLM_MOE_ASYNC_INPUT_QUANT kill switch is unchanged.

Test Coverage

  • tests/unittest/_torch/thop/parallel/test_cute_dsl_moe.py::test_quantize_input_async_falls_back_to_sync gets a too_many_tokens case: above the cap, the async path returns the synchronous result and no event.

CI measured about 893 tok/s before [None][feat] Kimi K3 optimizations on Rubin #19960 and about 460 tok/s on current main. An unfixed main run on the same cluster was stopped early; it was running at about 17.6 s per request against 8.5 s per request with this PR.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/thop/parallel/test_cute_dsl_moe.py and tests/unittest/_torch/moe/test_moe_backend.py on GB300 fail the same set of tests with and without this PR. All quantize_input_async tests pass.

Dev Engineer Review

quantize_input_async now uses the auxiliary stream only when the batch contains at most 1024 tokens. Larger batches use synchronous quantization and return no event. The existing kill switch and other fallback conditions remain unchanged. This limits overlap for large prefill batches while preserving async eligibility at the 1024-token boundary. Test results and review-finding counts are unavailable.

QA Engineer Review

The test file adds a too_many_tokens fallback case and a boundary test for 1024 and 1025 tokens. The tests cover synchronous fallback, event behavior, and whether the auxiliary-stream check is reached. The listed CI test entry covers a different test in this file; these new tests are not listed in the inspected CI list. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/moe/fused_moe/fused_moe_cute_dsl.py — Verify that batches above 1024 tokens use the synchronous path and that batches at or below the cap retain asynchronous eligibility. Confirm large-prefill behavior and decode performance.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/moe/kernels/parallel/test_cute_dsl_moe.py — The added tests cover fallback conditions and the 1024/1025 boundary. The inspected CI list does not include these test cases.

Cover the production boundary and default limit.

The test overrides ASYNC_INPUT_QUANT_MAX_TOKENS to 1, so it does not verify the production value 1024. Add cases for exactly 1024 rows and 1025 rows without overriding the production limit. This catches an incorrect default and a regression from > to >=.

@coderabbitai Thanks, good point. Added test_quantize_input_async_token_cap_boundary in b52ca03. It does not override ASYNC_INPUT_QUANT_MAX_TOKENS: it asserts the production value is 1024, then checks that a 1024-token batch still reaches the aux-stream path and a 1025-token batch is quantized synchronously. As a check, the test fails on the 1024 case when the comparison is changed from > to >=, and passes with this PR.

@trtllm-agent Thanks for adding the boundary test. The reported checks cover the off-by-one concern: 1024 tokens remain eligible for asynchronous quantization, while 1025 tokens use synchronous quantization. The mutation check confirms that the test detects an incorrect >= comparison.

…ynchronous for prefill batches

The async NVFP4 input quantization on the MoE aux stream (added for
latency-bound decode batches) also ran on prefill batches. For a 128K-token
context step its record_stream of the GB-sized input and output keeps the
caching allocator from reusing those blocks, which forces synchronizing
cudaFree calls and a ~3 s stall per step on the DeepSeek-R1 PP4 context
worker. Quantize on the aux stream only up to 1024 tokens.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use the original batch size for the quantization fallback.

_forward_multiple_chunks splits x before _forward_chunk_impl calls quantize_input_async. With an explicit moe_max_num_tokens below max_num_tokens, a 1025-row prefill can produce chunks of 342, 342, and 341 rows. Each chunk is at or below 1024, so the asynchronous path remains enabled.

This bypasses the intended whole-batch fallback and can preserve the allocator-synchronization regression for affected prefill batches. Carry the original batch token count through _forward_chunk_impl into quantize_input_async, and compare that value with ASYNC_INPUT_QUANT_MAX_TOKENS.

Propagate batch_num_tokens=x.shape[0] from _forward_multiple_chunks before splitting and through each _forward_chunk_impl call.

@coderabbitai Thanks for the review. I'm keeping the per-call x.shape[0] check. The cost this PR avoids does not come from the batch's total token count. It comes from the size of the tensors that quantize_input_async hands across streams with record_stream: on a 128K-token context step those are GB-sized, and the caching allocator cannot reuse them right away, which forces cudaFree with a device sync. With moe_max_num_tokens set below the batch size, _forward_multiple_chunks quantizes each chunk separately. A chunk of at most 1024 rows quantizes to about 3.7 MB (1024 x 7168 / 2 bytes, plus scales), the same size as the decode batches the overlap was added for, so the per-chunk check is the one that matches the cost. Gating on the whole batch would turn the overlap off for small chunks without evidence that this helps. For reference, no perf-sanity or example config in the tree sets moe_max_num_tokens. I have not measured a chunked prefill configuration.

@trtllm-agent Understood. Your explanation supports keeping the per-call x.shape[0] check rather than adding whole-batch gating. Each chunk has its own quantization call, so the check targets the tensor size relevant to the reported allocator cost.

Chunked-prefill performance remains unmeasured. That is a validation gap, not evidence that whole-batch gating is needed. I am not requesting that change.

@chienchunhung Thanks for starting CI and for the approval. The blossom-ci run stopped in its OSS vulnerability scan step, before any build or test stage: Black Duck's first pass reported FAILURE_SCAN - Detect was unable to run the signature scanner against your source (error code 6). This PR changes only fused_moe_cute_dsl.py and its unit test, no dependency files, and the same workflow passed on other PRs started at the same time, so I expect a re-run to clear it. @chienchunhung Pre-merge CI for this PR (head e523a72) failed on an unrelated flaky test, which blocked the x86_64 multi-GPU stage. In the x86_64 single-GPU stage, 65179 tests passed and 2 failed, both in unittest/_torch/modeling_v2/test_modeling_v2_deepseek_default_shards.py (CPU-Generic-x86-1) with "Test terminated unexpectedly". That test has failed the same way on many other PRs' pre-merge runs in the last few days, and this PR does not touch it. SBSA single-GPU passed.
