…h H3 A new case in the geospatial suite joins three shapes of data in DuckDB: the latest NOAA GFS forecast (a raster, read lazily from dynamical.org's public Zarr store), Natural Earth's cities (points) and its 1:10m countries (polygons). It asks how hot each country will be tomorrow and how many people live where it will pass 35 °C, two ways: - exact geometry with DuckDB's spatial extension: ST_Within on the geometry column xarray-sql derives, with bbox_conjuncts pruning a single country's read to its chunks; - H3 hexagon IDs with DuckDB's community h3 extension, which turn each spatial relationship into an equality JOIN. Every step is checked against xarray, shapely or h3-py references. On the 2026-10-21 forecast, the exact country means took 60 s and the H3 ones 13 ms after a 13 s one-time cover, within 0.29 °C for half of the countries. Writing it surfaced two DuckDB behaviors, now in Known issues and pinned by tests: a spatial join on the geometry column of an Arrow scan fails (see #278), and ST_Within won't compare ST_Read's EPSG:4326 tag with the default OGC:CRS84 one. 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Limit CaseSkipped to install and network failures. Let SQL errors fail the case.
The except duckdb.Error covers the INSTALL/LOAD statements and the CREATE TABLE ... FROM ST_Read(...) statements together. _NATURAL_EARTH reads from the master branch of natural-earth-vector, so its schema can change without notice. If NAME, pop_max, latitude or longitude is renamed, DuckDB raises a BinderException. That exception is a subclass of duckdb.Error, so run_case prints ⏭ SKIPPED and returns 0. A broken case then looks the same as an offline run, both in run_all.sh and in CI.
To fix this, keep the extension install in its own try. Around ST_Read, catch only I/O errors (duckdb.IOException, duckdb.HTTPException).

The geometry and H3 examples now live in the Learn page's tour. Case 10 and its Geospatial section move to the geospatial-case-10 branch, to be evaluated separately. This keeps what writing it turned up: the two DuckDB known issues, the tests that pin them, and a note in the Geospatial page's geometry section. EPSG:4326 officially puts latitude first, and the registered points are longitude first, as OGC:CRS84 says. Retagging the polygons from ST_Read keeps every tag true, so a later ST_Transform needs no always_xy. # What is this?
This is a prototype of a geospatial extension for DuckDB that adds support for working with spatial data and functions in the form of a `GEOMETRY` type based on the "Simple Features" geometry model, as well as non-standard specialized columnar DuckDB native geometry types that provide better compression and faster execution in exchange for flexibility.
Please note that this extension is still in a very early stage of development, and the internal storage format for the geometry types may change indiscriminately between commits. We are actively working on it, and we welcome both contributions and feedback. Please see the function table or the roadmap entries for the current implementation status.
If you or your organization have any interest in sponsoring development of this extension, or have any particular use cases you'd like to see prioritized or supported, please consider sponsoring the DuckDB foundation or contacting DuckDB Labs for commercial support.
# How do I get it?
## Through the DuckDB CLI
You can install the extension for DuckDB through the DuckDB CLI like you would do for other first party extensions. Simply execute: `INSTALL spatial; LOAD spatial`!
## Development builds
You can also grab the lastest builds directly from the CI runs or the release page here on GitHub and install manually.
Once you have downloaded the extension for your platform, you need to:
* Unzip the archive
* Start duckdb with the `-unsigned` flag to allow loading unsigned extensions. (This won't be neccessary in the future)
* Run `INSTALL 'absolute/or/relative/path/to/the/unzipped/extension';`
* The extension is now installed, you can now load it with `LOAD spatial;` whenever you want to use it.
You can also build the extension yourself following the instructions below.
## Building from source
This extension is based on the DuckDB extension template.
Dependencies
You need a recent version of CMake (3.20) and a C++11 compatible compiler. You also need OpenSSL on your system. On ubuntu you can install it with `sudo apt install libssl-dev`, on macOS you can install it with `brew install openssl`. Note that brew installs openssl in a non-standard location, so you may need to set a `OPENSSL_ROOT_DIR=$(brew --prefix openssl)` environment variable when building.
We bundle all the other required dependencies in the `third_party` directory, which should be automatically built and statically linked into the extension. This may take some time the first time you build, but subsequent builds should be much faster.
We also highly recommend that you install Ninja which you can select when building by setting the `GEN=ninja` environment variable.
git clone --recurse-submodules https://github.com/duckdb/duckdb-spatial
cd duckdb-spatial
make debug
You can then invoke the built DuckDB (with the extension statically linked):
./build/debug/duckdb
Please see the Makefile for more options, or the extension template documentation for more details.
# Example Usage
Please see the example for an example on how to use the extension.

<title>Geometry Data Type – DuckDB</title>
<location>https://duckdb.org/docs/preview/sql/data_types/geometry</location>
<excerpt>citeturn1search1 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: 2 days ago; It is currently not possible to define a custom CRS from within SQL, or to persist custom CRS definitions in a database such that DuckDB can use them to resolve CRS identifiers for geometry columns, but this is something we are considering for the future. ... To convert a geometry from one CRS to another, you can use the `ST_Transform(geom, crs)` function from the `spatial` extension. ... You can also use the `ST_SetCRS(geom, crs)` function to assign a CRS to a geometry that doesn't have one, or to reassign a CRS without transforming coordinates (e.g., when the data is already in the correct coordinate system but lacks the correct CRS).
### Working with Geometries in Different Coordinate Reference Systems
One benefit of tracking CRSs as part of the type system is that it prevents a lot of common mistakes that can occur when working with geometries from different coordinate systems. Most spatial functions that operate on multiple `GEOMETRY` values verify that all input expressions have the same CRS before performing the operation. Similarly, `GEOMETRY` columns can only be implicitly cast to and from other `GEOMETRY` columns if the source or the target don't have a CRS specified.
To convert a geometry from one CRS to another, you can use the `ST_Transform(geom, crs)` function from the `spatial` extension.
`

Raise the DuckDB minimum to the 1.5 line.
The DuckDB 1.4 spatial branch does not support CRS tags or ST_SetCRS; its source states that SRIDs are ignored. The test calls ST_SetCRS, so a supported DuckDB 1.4 installation can fail before it checks CRS behavior.

Review comment at @tests/test_geometry.py at line 162:
Raise the project’s DuckDB minimum dependency from 1.4.0 to 1.5.0 so the
ST_SetCRS usage in the polygon test is supported; update the existing DuckDB
requirement declaration without changing the test logic.

Documents two DuckDB behaviors that affect xarray-sql's
geometrycolumns, and pins each with a test. Both turned up while writing a geospatial demo with DuckDB'sspatialandh3extensions.A spatial join on the geometry column fails. Joining a registered table's
geometryto a table of polygons withST_Withinraises:It reproduces without xarray-sql, and is filed as DuckDB: spatial join on a GEOMETRY column of an Arrow scan fails (EXPRESSION_FILTER pushdown) — draft for upstream #278, a draft for upstream. Workarounds: build the point with
ST_Point(x, y), or copy the table into DuckDB first.CRS tags must match. DuckDB's
ST_Readtags GeoJSONEPSG:4326, andST_Withinwon't compare that with xarray-sql's defaultOGC:CRS84tag. Retagging the polygons withST_SetCRS(geom, 'OGC:CRS84')fixes it. That tag is the accurate one: GeoJSON and xarray-sql's points are longitude first, asOGC:CRS84says, whileEPSG:4326officially puts latitude first.Changes
docs/limitations.md: two entries in the DuckDB tab.docs/geospatial.md: a short note in the GeoArrow point-geometry section that points to them.tests/test_geometry.py: two tests that check each failure and its workaround. When DuckDB fixes the join, the first test fails; that's the signal to drop the workaround from the docs. The demo itself, geospatial case 10 (GFS × Natural Earth, with exact geometry and H3), is on the
geospatial-case-10branch for evaluation and isn't part of this PR. Its short version is in the Learn page (#277).🤖 Generated with Claude Code
