Escape stored values rendered by backend widgets and settings - #1558
Conversation
Several backend partials interpolated a stored value straight into an attribute or an element while a sibling line in the same file encoded the same value, so the encoding of a rendered record depended on which branch of the partial happened to run. Each of those sinks now encodes where it emits: the TagList hidden inputs used for preview, read-only and disabled fields; the dropdown field's preview hidden input; the attachment name and the two attachment URLs the FileUpload widget decorates a record with; the import/export column sample heading; the switch filter scope's stored state; and the option value of the RichEditor page-links dialog, whose label keeps its deliberate indent markup while the page title it prefixes is encoded. Editor markup classes and paragraph formats are encoded where the editor reads them rather than constrained where they are saved, because the editor builds its dropdown markup by string concatenation and because reading is the only place that also covers values already stored. Finally, the two views that hand a whole stored document to the browser - the Mail branding preview and the event log's mail preview - now pass it as data instead of embedding it in page markup it could terminate, render it in a sandboxed frame, and, for Mail branding, strip tags from the compiled stylesheet on the cache-hit path as well as the cache-miss one, which is what Brand Settings and Editor Settings already do.
User-visible behaviour changes:
- Editor Settings, "Markup Classes" and "Paragraph Formats": both halves are HTML encoded where the editor reads them, rather than constrained. A class name reaches the editor as it was written - `callout callout--lead`, `md:text-lg`, `w-1/2`, `a.b`, `[&>p]:mt-4`, `lead_paragraph-1` - because the browser decodes the attribute again when the editor reads it back, so the configured class still applies. A paragraph format tag is emitted as a literal element name rather than as text, so it still has to be a bare element name: a letter followed by letters, digits, hyphens or underscores, with surrounding whitespace trimmed. `N`, `H1` and custom names such as `my-callout` work; a tag carrying attributes or spaces is left out rather than rewritten. A row whose class name, tag or label is neither a scalar nor an object that stringifies is left out. Labels still display exactly as written.
- The RichEditor page-links dialog encodes each link title where it joins it to the nesting indent, so a `backend.richeditor.getTypeInfo` listener that already returns an entity encoded title now shows those entities literally; a listener should return the title as plain text. Neither core page-link provider is affected. A title that is an object which stringifies renders its text; one that is neither that nor a scalar contributes an empty label rather than raising.
- A switch filter scope renders as unset when the value stored for it is not a single value, rather than raising while the list page renders.
- The Mail branding preview and the event log mail preview render in a sandboxed frame, so a previewed document no longer runs script or submits forms. Frame height adjustment, which reads the previewed document, is unaffected, and links in the previewed message still work: the Mail branding preview keeps `allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox` alongside `allow-same-origin` because the sample message's action button is a `target="_blank"` link. The event log frame renders the logged body as text and carries no links, so it keeps `allow-same-origin` alone.
- Mail branding's compiled stylesheet has tags stripped, including when it is served from cache.
- A stored value that is not valid UTF-8 still posts back from the TagList and dropdown preview inputs. Encoding it answers an invalid byte sequence with an empty string, which would have dropped the value on the next save, so those two inputs substitute the invalid bytes instead.
- The event log beautifier leaves `{x-newline}` and `{x-tabulation}` carried by a logged message as text as well, not only its `{exception-beautifier-*}` tokens.
- Values containing HTML metacharacters are now entity encoded in the markup that carries them. Browsers decode them before submitting, so saved data and attachment links are unchanged.
- The Mail branding page no longer emits the `mailPreviewTemplate` script element; the preview is initialised directly from the message.

WalkthroughBackend forms and widgets now escape selected values, and editor settings convert, validate, and escape configured styles and formats. Mail-branding CSS output strips HTML tags. Mail preview content is JSON-encoded and placed in a sandboxed iframe. Exception-log formatting escapes input tokens, and its email iframe now has a sandbox. Regression tests cover these rendering paths. Priority: ➖ Normal Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes Possibly related issues

`testFieldEscapesPathUrl` uploads a file whose client name carries a quote, to show that an unrestricted field carries it into the attachment URL. Windows does not allow a quote in a file name, so the upload is refused there and the URL the test asserts on cannot arise at all. Skipped with that reason rather than weakened: `testFieldEscapesThumbUrl` already covers the same partials from a stored record on every platform.

The suggestion applied in 0deca7b inserted a second copy of renderableLinkTitle() instead of replacing the first, which made the class fail to compile. Keep one copy and reattach getPageLinksArray()'s docblock to the method it documents.
The FileUpload thumb URL case also switches from a union to array_replace(): thumbConfig() already names a mode, so the union kept it and re-rendered the single image case instead of the multi image partial the case names. It now asserts that the multi partial rendered the attachment.
The editor reads its style and format labels back out of `data-*` attributes holding JSON, and the parser decodes those attributes once on the way. Storm overrides Laravel's `e()` with a `$doubleEncode = false` default, so the second `e()` left the entities EditorSetting had written untouched and the editor was handed the original markup, which it concatenates into its dropdowns with `innerHTML`. A label containing a quote also broke the JSON, leaving the dropdown with one entry per character. Encode these six attributes with `htmlspecialchars()` instead, matching the postback sinks beside them, so the sink no longer depends on which `e()` is loaded.
CodeEditor::prepareVars() has escaped its value with double_encode since 3524b17 (2015), and Form::select() escapes option labels and attributes itself, so the e() in each caller was a second layer. It was a no-op only because Storm's e() override defaulted $doubleEncode to false; with that override removed the layers compose and the value is corrupted - for the code editor, a little more on every open-and-save. Drop the redundant e() at both and leave the escaping with the code that owns it. Also reverts the rich editor partial to e(), since e() double-encoding is what that attribute needed.
The pre-escape in prepareVars() dates from 2015, when e() could not double encode and a literal entity in the source was lost on save. e() does that itself now, so the two sinks escape their own output like every other partial here and the view variable is no longer a pre-escaped value that does not look like one.
Editor markup classes and paragraph formats are encoded where the editor reads them rather than constrained where they are saved, because the editor builds its dropdown markup by string concatenation and reading is the only place that also covers values already stored. A class name still reaches the editor as written —
md:text-lg,w-1/2,[&>p]:mt-4— since the browser decodes the attribute when the editor reads it back. A paragraph format tag is emitted as a literal element name, so it must still be a bare one and is dropped rather than rewritten if it is not. The two views that hand a whole stored document to the browser, the Mail branding preview and the event log's mail preview, now pass it as data instead of embedding it in page markup it could terminate, render it in a sandboxed frame, and, for Mail branding, strip tags from the compiled stylesheet on the cache-hit path as well as the cache-miss one.Two call sites stop escaping a value their widget already escaped.
CodeEditor::prepareVars()has escaped withdouble_encodesince 3524b17 (2015) andForm::select()escapes option labels and attributes itself, so thee()in each caller was a second layer — a no-op only because Storm'se()override defaulted$doubleEncodetofalse. Those two are the reason that override existed, and removing them is what lets it go.Encoding a value that is not valid UTF-8 answers with an empty string, which would silently drop it on the next save, so the TagList and dropdown preview inputs substitute the invalid bytes rather than calling
e(). Otherwise: abackend.richeditor.getTypeInfolistener returning an already-encoded title now shows those entities literally and should return plain text, which no core page-link provider does; a switch filter scope renders as unset rather than raising when its stored value is not a single value; the Mail branding and event log previews no longer run script or submit forms, with Mail branding keepingallow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandboxbecause the sample message's action button is atarget="_blank"link; the beautifier leaves{x-newline}and{x-tabulation}as text alongside its own tokens; and the Mail branding page no longer emits themailPreviewTemplatescript element. Saved data and attachment links are unchanged — browsers decode the entities before submitting.Tests:
TagListEscapingTest,FormFieldEscapingTest,FileUploadEscapingTest,BackendMarkupEscapingTest,EditorSettingTest,MailBrandSettingTest,MailBrandSettingsTest, and theMailPreviewSandboxandExceptionBeautifierjest cases. Each sink has a test that fails without its change, paired with an invalidation test that ordinary values still render and round-trip, includingtestATagThatIsNotValidUtf8StillPostsBackandtestPageLinkWithATitleThatStringifiesStillRendersIt. The suite cannot cover one of these: PHPUnit resolves Laravel'se()while the application resolves Storm's, so the rich editor attributes were verified in a browser instead, along with every other sink here.Requires wintercms/storm#267, which removes the
e()override. The two are mutually dependent — the editor settings encode-on-read in this PR needse()to double-encode to survive the attribute, and the override's removal needs the two corrected call sites above. Merge and tag Storm first.
