Html::clean() removed event-handler, xmlns and style attributes with a pattern that ran from the start of a tag to the first >. That is not correct when an attribute value contains a > of its own, and it also meant the match consumed everything from the offending attribute to the end of the tag, so unrelated attributes after it were discarded too.

This walks a tag's attributes as complete units instead, treating a quote as opening a value only where a value may legally begin, and removes just the attribute that should not be kept while leaving its separator in place. The style strip was a second copy of the same pattern, so it is folded into the same pass. Two inputs that the old pattern mangled now survive: a URL path beginning with on, and handler-like text inside a quoted value such as alt. On a 286 KB document the new pass is slightly faster than the two it replaces.

Behaviour changes

  • Only the attribute being removed is removed. <img onerror=x src=y> now cleans to <img src=y> rather than <img >.
  • style is now removed consistently wherever it appears in a tag, where previously it was only matched in some positions.
  • An attribute whose name merely starts with a removed name is kept — styles="…" is no longer affected.
  • A URL path beginning with on, e.g. href="https://example.com/one=1", is no longer truncated.

Tests

tests/Html/HtmlBuilderTest.php:

  • testCleanRemovesUnsafeAttributes — data-driven over the attribute shapes a tag can carry, asserting the named attribute is gone.
  • testCleanPreservesSafeMarkup — asserts markup that should be untouched round-trips unchanged, including prose containing onboarding=true and the URL case above.
  • testCleanKeepsTheAttributesSurroundingARemovedOne — pins the first behaviour change.

The existing testClean is unmodified and still passes. 21 of the 48 assertions in this file fail against the previous implementation and all 48 pass with this change.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved HTML cleaning to remove unsafe attributes without stripping neighboring attributes or safe markup.
    • Correctly handles quoted attribute values containing > while preserving existing protocol rewriting and unwanted-element removal.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for unsafe attribute removal and preservation of safe markup.

The attribute strip matched from the start of a tag to the first ">", so a
tag whose attribute value contained one was only partly processed, and
everything from the matched attribute to the end of the tag was discarded
along with it.

Walk a tag's attributes as complete units instead, treating a quote as
opening a value only where a value may legally begin, and remove just the
attribute that is not safe to keep. The style strip is folded into the same
pass, since it was a second copy of the same pattern.

Walkthrough

HtmlBuilder::clean now parses tag attributes and removes complete attributes named on…, xmlns or xmlns:…, and style. It preserves neighboring attributes and retains the existing protocol-rewriting and unwanted-element removal steps. Tests cover unsafe-attribute removal, safe-markup preservation, and retention of surrounding attributes.

The new attribute cleaner can be bypassed by placing a malformed attribute such as =foo before an event handler. Sanitized HTML would then still contain an executable onerror handler, which allows script injection that the previous version blocked. This should be fixed before merging.

Comment thread src/Html/HtmlBuilder.php Outdated
An equals sign could neither separate two attributes nor begin a name, so a
tag carrying one where a name was expected ended the attribute scan early and
left the attributes after it unexamined. Treat it as a separator, which makes
the scan total: from anywhere in a tag it either consumes an attribute or
reaches the end of the tag.

Also trims the comments on the two patterns.
