Follow-up to #1311, from its review.

The problem

The version floor #1311 added is a Python assert inside a Dockerfile RUN. A RUN inherits the
base image's ENV, and PYTHONOPTIMIZE strips asserts. With it set, a core from 1.31 to 1.33 is
pinned to itself, uv lands on a starlette instrumentor built for starlette<0.15, and the bake and
the attestation both pass with instrumentation off at runtime. The attestation's own checks in
build-otel-shim.sh are asserts too, and run under the same ENV.

The change

  • Dockerfile.otel-shim: the floor is an expression, … >= (1, 34) or sys.exit(1). It stays an
    expression because the RUN joins its lines with ;, so an if cannot follow.
  • build-otel-shim.sh: the three attestation asserts become … or sys.exit("…"), same messages.
  • The install refusal no longer says "no contrib release is paired with that version" when the pin
    is the default distro, where no pairing is involved. RECIPE.md gives the two cases, each with
    its next step.

Testing

input PYTHONOPTIMIZE main this branch
core 1.32.1 unset pins opentelemetry-distro==0.65b0 same
core 1.32.1 1 or 2 pins opentelemetry-api==1.32.1 pins opentelemetry-distro==0.65b0
core 1.43.0 unset, 1, 2 pins opentelemetry-api==1.43.0 same
none unset, 1, 2 pins opentelemetry-distro==0.65b0 same

The RUN text was run exactly as the Dockerfile joins it, under sh -c, against venvs.

Attestation, on an image baked from this branch (weather_tool, core 1.43.0, 0.64b0): with
PYTHONOPTIMIZE=1 and the gate off, main's script exits 0; this branch's exits 1 with
hook did not run. With the gate on it passes with and without the variable.

The refusal on the fallback pin, driven on python:3.9-slim with no OpenTelemetry:

the bake is pinned to opentelemetry-distro==0.65b0
  × No solution found when resolving dependencies:
  ╰─▶ Because the current Python version (3.9.25) does not satisfy
      Python>=3.10 and opentelemetry-distro==0.65b0 depends on Python>=3.10,
REFUSING: the shim could not be installed alongside opentelemetry-distro==0.65b0 (uv's error is above; RECIPE step 2 reads it)

The whole failure, end to end: a Starlette 1.7 app on core 1.32.1 with PYTHONOPTIMIZE=1 in its
image. main pins opentelemetry-api==1.32.1, installs starlette instrumentor 0.53b1, builds and
attests clean; at runtime the instrumentor logs DependencyConflict: requested: "starlette >= 0.13, <0.15" and a request carrying a traceparent makes two outbound calls on two new trace ids. This
branch pins opentelemetry-distro==0.65b0 and the outbound calls carry the inbound trace id.

Images baked by main and by this branch from weather_tool (core 1.43.0) and slack_researcher
(no OpenTelemetry) have identical installed package sets (92 and 71 distributions).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • OpenTelemetry version and attestation checks now continue to run when Python optimization is enabled, helping prevent incompatible setups from passing verification.
  • Documentation
    • Updated setup guidance to distinguish unavailable paired releases from incompatible installed releases, with capture-only steps for each case.
    • Clarified where to find install-failure guidance and which printed output to check after attestation failures.

A RUN inherits the base image's ENV, and PYTHONOPTIMIZE strips asserts.
With it set, the 1.34 floor that rossoctl#1311 added vanished: a core from 1.31
to 1.33 was pinned to itself, uv landed on a starlette instrumentor for
starlette<0.15, and the bake and attestation passed with instrumentation
off at runtime. The floor is now `… or sys.exit(1)`; the attestation's
three asserts go the same way, since they run under the image's ENV too.

The install refusal no longer blames a missing contrib pairing when the
pin is the default distro, where no pairing is involved; the RECIPE row
says what each case means and what to do next.

The OpenTelemetry shim now checks the API version floor and propagation conditions with explicit failures that remain active when Python optimization strips assertions. Installation and attestation guidance has also changed.

The API version floor and propagation checks now exit explicitly on failure. The install-failure message points to RECIPE step 2. The recipe distinguishes contrib-release availability from app-environment installation failures and refers to the printed attestation line.

The RECIPE row for the install refusal presented the missing paired
release as the cause; it is the usual one, but uv's error is what
identifies it.

PYTHONOPTIMIZE in the base image's ENV strips assert, silently defeating #1311's 1.34 floor and the three attestation checks. Converting to … or sys.exit(…) expressions is the right fix.
