About the built md files inside API, as these are built from the defs, do we want them checked into this repo at all?

Yes, we should update those as well. Let me take care of this and create a new release once all is merged and tested.

The github actions do update them as well before publishing, so they indeed could be skipped. As soon as they are gone, cargo run needs to be called before mdbook build, but that should be no problem and kinda is documented already here: https://github.com/renoise/xrnx/blob/master/BUILD.md
