Smart directory navigation and zoxide integration #147
Description
Goal
Smart directory navigation: native frecency with optional zoxide integration.
Native direction
- cwd/project frecency from Rich history search and metadata #143 history metadata.
- Directory suggestions (ghost text/completion for
cdarguments). - Fast fuzzy navigation through pickers (Picker abstraction and external fuzzy finders #145) and the command palette (Global command palette #146).
External optional provider
zoxide — https://github.com/ajeetdsouza/zoxide. Query its database (for example ranked listings) for users who already use it. Its zsh hooks are already preserved (#16).
UX / product direction
- Never hijack ordinary
cdsemantics.cdkeeps behaving exactly likecd. - When NMSh navigates on the user's behalf, it runs a visible real
cdcommand so the transcript and shell state stay truthful.
Acceptance criteria
- Native frecency ranks directories from recorded history.
- Explicit navigation action via picker/palette.
- zoxide used when selected and installed; falls back to Native.
- Plain
cdis unchanged.

Development implementation is reviewable in #238; final acceptance documentation is #241. These are dependent, unmerged PRs on current dev, with no release/version bump.
The complete code head passed 714 local tests, build, typecheck, benchmark types and diff checks, plus Node 22/26 CI. Architecture and limitations describe what is implemented and deferred. One physical-QA checklist covers the relevant keyboard/layout/provider/privacy checks; it has not been performed.
This issue stays open until release. Project status could not be updated because the available token lacks read:project; active branches/PRs provide durable work status.

Implemented on the v0.16 branch (PR #303,
feature/v016-platform-portability-agents). Native directory frecency plus an optional read-only zoxide provider, plaincdunchanged:src/shell/DirectoryService.ts,tests/directoryNavigation.test.ts. It was part of the integrated build the maintainer physically validated in the earlier v0.16 QA pass; closing with the implementation.
