Summary

  • Reorganizes mkdocs.yml's nav into the standard pgedge-docs template, preserving every original page as a flat link list on the new Source page.
  • Splits installation, configuration, and Lakekeeper/object-store setup into dedicated guides, and splits day-to-day usage by operating mode (Tiered, Decoupled, Standalone Partitioned), with a new Administration section for shared operational topics (caveats, vended credentials, reading and writing, supported types, distributed setup, compaction).
  • Converts the Using ColdFront and Architecture Guides sections to real index.md pages so their nav headers open the intro content directly, with no duplicate nav entry.

Test plan

  • mkdocs build --strict passes with no warnings
  • Spot-check the nav in a local preview (mkdocs serve): Using ColdFront, Architecture Guides, and Administration all render and link correctly
  • Confirm README.md and docs/index.md still list every guide

📝 Walkthrough

The documentation was reorganized into focused guides for architecture, installation, configuration, usage modes, operations, and walkthroughs. MkDocs navigation and cross-references now use the reorganized structure. New pages document storage setup, supported types, operational caveats, and deployment procedures.

Changes: Documentation Reorganization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Landing pages and site navigation
README.md, docs/index.md, mkdocs.yml, CONTRIBUTING.md, CLAUDE.md, .gitignore
Landing pages, contributor guidance, and MkDocs navigation link to the reorganized guide groups. The overview describes standalone partitioned mode, and documentation-maintenance guidance and the docs virtual-environment ignore rule are updated.
Architecture guide references
docs/architecture_decoupled.md, docs/architecture_guides/index.md, docs/architecture_tiered.md, docs/architecture_vectors.md
Architecture pages and cross-references point to current architecture, usage, configuration, and operations guides. Selected descriptions clarify mode-specific behavior.
Installation and ColdFront configuration
docs/installation.md, docs/configuration.md
Installation guidance is separated from ColdFront configuration. The guides describe package and source installation, PostgreSQL settings, runtime options, and configuration import behavior.
Lakekeeper, object-store, and credential setup
docs/configure_lakekeeper.md, docs/object_store.md, docs/vended_credentials.md, docs/exploring_coldfront/index.md
The guides cover Lakekeeper, S3-compatible storage, AWS, GCS, Azure ADLS Gen2, and vended credentials. Setup instructions capture warehouse IDs and create namespaces only when an ID is available.
Mode-specific usage guides
docs/usage.md, docs/usage_decoupled.md, docs/usage_partitioner.md, docs/usage_tiered.md, docs/usage_vectors.md, docs/using_coldfront/index.md
The former combined usage guide is removed. Dedicated guides describe decoupled, tiered, and standalone partitioner use. The usage index compares modes and documents shared operations and lifecycle behavior.
Operational behavior and limits
docs/caveats.md, docs/supported_types.md, docs/distributed_setup.md, docs/connecting.md, docs/compaction.md, docs/changelog.md, docs/stylesheets/extra.css
New guides document caveats, supported types, distributed setup, and application-role connections. Compaction guidance and changelog wording are revised, and inline code in tables does not wrap mid-word.
Exploration and mode walkthroughs
docs/exploring_coldfront/index.md, docs/walkthrough_*.md
The exploration landing page presents the demos, prerequisites, and setup steps. Existing walkthroughs point to the reorganized setup, usage, and architecture guides.

Carry main's docs changes into the reorganized pages and apply the
review suggestions:

- supported_types.md: a cold-tier write that reads a PostgreSQL table
  stores a numeric NaN as 0 and an array renumbered from 1; add the
  query that checks a source table, and fix "is rejected" to "are".
- caveats.md and README.md: add the matching caveat, linked to
  Supported Column Types instead of the removed usage.md.
- architecture_decoupled.md: list every write that reads a PostgreSQL
  table through pglocal.
- usage_partitioner.md: registration refuses a column that is not the
  partition key.
- object_store.md: ADLS Gen2 needs hierarchical namespace.
- Keep usage.md deleted; drop the caveat paragraph that the merge placed
  in index.md, since caveats.md now carries it.

Keep Lakekeeper bootstrap in one canonical location.

The Docker and bare-metal procedures in docs/configure_lakekeeper.md repeat the same bootstrap, warehouse, and namespace commands. This violates the one-home-per-topic requirement.

Keep the backend-specific warehouse instructions in docs/object_store.md, but link its common bootstrap step to docs/configure_lakekeeper.md. Use a dedicated bootstrap anchor so the link does not send users to the SeaweedFS-specific warehouse example.

Suggested fix

The strict-build request is not supported as a review finding. mkdocs.yml defines the navigation and link validation, but the supplied repository guidance does not require mkdocs build --strict or a reported validation result. The unchecked test-plan item does not establish a failure or a skipped mandatory check. No actionable defect remains.

🟠 Major · Secure Lakekeeper before starting the bare-metal service. · configure_lakekeeper.md:77-120

docs/configure_lakekeeper.md:77-120
🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Secure Lakekeeper before starting the bare-metal service.

Following the documented steps with the template defaults starts Lakekeeper on 0.0.0.0:8181 without authentication or enforcing authorization. Any client that can reach port 8181 can submit the documented bootstrap, warehouse-creation, and namespace-creation requests. Move the security requirement before systemctl enable --now and require either a loopback bind for same-host use or authentication, enforcing authorization, and network restrictions for remote clients.

Suggested fix
-4. Enable and start the service:
+4. Secure the listener before starting the service. For same-host deployments,
+ set `LAKEKEEPER__BIND_IP=127.0.0.1`. For deployments with remote clients,
+ configure an authentication mechanism and an enforcing authorization backend,
+ and restrict port 8181 to the intended clients with a firewall. Do not start
+ the service with the default `0.0.0.0` bind and no authorization.
+
+5. Enable and start the service:

     ```bash
     sudo systemctl enable --now lakekeeper
     ```

-Lakekeeper listens on port 8181 on every address by default. Without an
-authorization backend in `lakekeeper.env`, the catalog accepts every request,
-so configure authentication and authorization before you expose the service
-beyond a trusted network.

<repository_evidence>
The template documents 0.0.0.0:8181 as the default listener and states that an unset LAKEKEEPER__AUTHZ_BACKEND leaves the catalog open.
The guide starts the service before its warning about the open listener and does not configure an authentication backend, authorization backend, bind restriction, or firewall.
The guide sends bootstrap, warehouse-creation, and namespace-creation requests without credentials.
Lakekeeper v0.13.1 defaults LAKEKEEPER__BIND_IP to 0.0.0.0 and uses the non-enforcing allowall authorization default when authentication is disabled.
The v0.13.1 bootstrap endpoint requires no token when authentication is disabled.
An operator who follows the bare-metal sequence without adding optional security settings starts an all-interface, unauthenticated catalog. A reachable client can submit catalog management mutations, including warehouse and namespace creation.
The existing warning is relevant counterevidence, but it appears after the service-start command and does not make a secure bind, authentication, authorization, or network restriction a prerequisite of the documented setup.
</repository_evidence>

🟡 Minor · Recover WID after duplicate warehouse creation. · object_store.md:395-408

docs/object_store.md:395-408
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Recover WID after duplicate warehouse creation.

If namespace creation fails and an operator reruns any backend setup, the duplicate warehouse response leaves WID empty. The shared namespace step then skips namespace creation. Add duplicate-response recovery to the backend setup flow, using the existing ci/lib.sh pattern to list warehouses and recover the existing ID.

Recover the existing warehouse ID before seeding the namespace.

If the namespace request fails, rerunning this block sends a duplicate warehouse request. Lakekeeper returns a 4XX response without a warehouse-id, so WID remains empty and the guard skips namespace creation. Add the existing-warehouse lookup used by ci/lib.sh.

Reuse the existing wh warehouse when the create response has no ID.

If namespace creation fails after the warehouse is created and someone reruns this block, Lakekeeper cannot create another warehouse named wh. The create command then leaves WID empty, and this branch skips namespace creation. When WID is empty, look up the existing wh warehouse before skipping. Lakekeeper requires warehouse names to be unique. (docs.lakekeeper.io)

Restore the promised flat Source page.

The nav has no Source entry. docs/index.md and README.md also do not provide a flat list of every documentation page. The grouped navigation keeps individual pages reachable, but users cannot access the page-listing behavior described for this PR. Add the Source page and register it in mkdocs.yml.

Add the missing guides to docs/index.md.

The landing page omits architecture_guides/index.md, using_coldfront/index.md, connecting.md, caveats.md, and supported_types.md. These pages are present in the MkDocs navigation, but users starting from docs/index.md cannot discover them there.
