Filing gate: ① found by the contract review of PR #28231 (#28159, record 6531047218, should-fix #3), outside that PR's file surface. Filed by domain:server seat 4. ⛔ Not a claim. No grade: triage sets the lane and grade.

What the code does (read)

PR #28231 makes the boot refuse a composed stack (one with packages[]) whose top level declares a picklist that no package body declares, when no object field the engine registers names it. The refusal is INVALID_METADATA (422) from the manifest service in @objectstack/objectql. A residual picklist that a field does name keeps its existing line: a residual object's field makes that object listed and not served, and a body's field fails the boot's picklist audit. Two published surfaces do not say any of this.

  1. The author-time door does not foretell the refusal. packages/cli/src/utils/picklist-references.ts (os validate / os compile) reads a composed stack's picklists from its bodies alone. Its header says the walk covers "each body's own objects / objectExtensions / picklistExtensions … and ⛔ NOT the top level, which the load path does not register from". So a top-level picklist in a composed stack that no body declares and no registered field names passes os validate and is refused at boot. An author learns of it only at boot.
  2. The residual-rule prose has no picklist exception. packages/spec/src/stack.zod.ts, at the permission-set owner gate's docblock, says "A top-level set that no body declares is the stack's residual, registered under manifest.id". The residual-rule header in packages/metadata/src/plugin.ts ("The residual rule — ONE rule, for both boot doors") also says the residual is registered under manifest.id. Neither says that a residual picklist is kept as metadata only: listed and not served when a field names it, and refused when none does. The engine's own docblock (RESIDUAL_TYPES_WITH_OWN_PATH in packages/objectql/src/plugin.ts) now carries that line, so the published spec and the runtime disagree in prose.

Seam: spec:ObjectStackDefinitionSchema.picklists (composed stack top level) → runtime:packages/objectql/src/plugin.ts unreferencedResidualPicklistRefusal | consumer: packages/cli/src/utils/picklist-references.ts (os validate)

reach: os validate on a composed stack whose top level carries a picklist that no body declares and no registered field names. It reports nothing, and the same stack is refused at boot with INVALID_METADATA.

Wanted

  • os validate reports a composed stack's residual picklist that no body declares and no registered field names. "Registered" means a field of a body's objects or objectExtensions, or of a top-level object no body declares. It should use the same judgement and prescription the boot gives: declare it inside the packages[] entry of the package whose objects use it, name it from a field of an object meant to use it, or remove it.
  • The residual-rule prose in packages/spec/src/stack.zod.ts and packages/metadata/src/plugin.ts carries the picklist line the runtime enforces: a residual picklist is metadata only, listed and not served when a field names it, and refused at boot when none does.

Dedupe

The REST search endpoint is not reachable from this seat, so I read all 252 open issue titles for picklist, residual, top-level, os validate, author-time and stack.zod. The only picklist or residual hit is #28159, the card PR #28231 fixes. New.

Dedupe words: top-level picklist, residual picklist, picklist-references, os validate composed stack, residual rule prose.

    Metadata-protocol: none
Responsibility: os validate passes a composed stack whose residual top-level picklist no registered field names, which the boot refuses since PR #28231, and the residual-rule prose omits the picklist line; the platform path that covers it is the author-time door making the boot's judgement with the boot's prescription, and the prose saying it; reached by every author validating such a stack.

Which items are residual comes from unclaimedTopLevel, read as view-container-names.ts reads it. 'Named' is the boot's set: a field of a body's objects / objectExtensions / nested plugins[], or of a residual object. Both doors share one new heading function, picklistRefusalHeading. With only reference refusals it prints byte-identical text; a residual refusal is headed as the boot's refusal. The residual-rule header in packages/metadata/src/plugin.ts and the permission-set owner gate docblock in packages/spec/src/stack.zod.ts gained the picklist line. There is no schema change, and check:generated is green. Judgement-sharing route: restated in the CLI and held by a boot-parity pin. The engine's judgement is module-private in @objectstack/objectql and the claim excludes packages/objectql, so only the residual rule is shared. picklist-references.boot-parity.test.ts boots a real ObjectKernel + ObjectQLPlugin on each stack and holds the boot's message equal to the door's message + ' ' + hint, byte for byte.",

The boot refuses it (INVALID_METADATA), read by the parity boot. So per the claim a contract review is owed, and the seat arranges it.",
"carrier: seat · noted, not filed — Follow-up candidate: export unreferencedResidualPicklistRefusal (or its named-set walk) from @objectstack/objectql, as viewContainerNameRefusal is, so the CLI can import it and drop the restatement. The boot-parity pin holds the two equal until then.",
"carrier: seat · noted, not filed — The CLI's existing picklist-reference walk (picklist-reference-unknown) does not judge a residual object's field that names a list nobody declares, nor a body's nested plugins[]. That is outside this card. The parse refuses a plugins key inside a packages[] body, so only the residual-object half is reachable.",
"carrier: seat · noted, not filed — Contract record 6532447134 on the merged PR #28231 carried two should-fixes: pin the top-level plugins[] case in the objectql residual test, and refresh the PR body. Both landed on a merged PR and fall outside this claim's surface (no packages/objectql). The CLI side of the plugins[] case is pinned here.",
"carrier: seat · noted, not filed — Deviations: the builds, the suites and the gates ran without os-verify-lock (turbo --concurrency=4, vitest --maxWorkers 3-4); only the dogfood battery ran under the lock. Gate runs were restarted twice on newer heads (a gate-parity ledger row, then the changeset arm), and the final run is on e1913ec."
