Codeboard

Draw with code. Keep the artwork editable. Render the film.

Codeboard is a JavaScript/TypeScript toolkit for drawing, storyboards, and 2D animation. Your coding agent creates the artwork, renders it for review, and makes targeted revisions through code.

The agent skills guide drawing, brushes, storyboards, animation, camera, audio, revision, review, and debugging. Install the plugin in Codex or Claude Code, or copy the complete skill folders into another compatible Agent Skills host. The skill source lives under plugin/; npm run plugin:build creates the installable plugin with offline references in release/codeboard-plugin/.

Install

Install Node.js 22.22 or later and npm, then install:

npm install -g codeboard-studio
codeboard --version

For a project dependency, use npm install --save-exact codeboard-studio and run the CLI with npx codeboard. The same package exports the JavaScript/TypeScript library. Installation and updates.

Agents can query the installed version's offline documentation with codeboard docs search "task keywords" and read a result with codeboard docs read "returned-id". Start with codeboard docs read index to browse.

Draw something

Open a new terminal in your working folder:

codeboard init scene.ts
codeboard run scene.ts

Open output/first.png to see the stroke. output/first.cboard keeps the editable project. Change the script and run it again, or reopen and revise the saved artwork.

Create and revise

  • Draw with pressure-sensitive paint, vector contours, and pixel surfaces.
  • Make brushes using your own tips or supported external resources.
  • Animate with drawing substitutions, holds, keyframes, and camera motion.
  • Review exact frames, detail crops, sheets, and layer-specific onion skins.
  • Export PNGs, storyboard PDFs, and movies with audio. MP4 export requires FFmpeg.

Pose drawings from the Codeboard demo

The Codeboard demo follows Clawd through a walk, pause, hop and landing. Run the example, inspect its onion skins, and revise a drawing hold. Download either the eight-second study or the complete 48-second demo, then run it with the installed codeboard CLI. Both use the public API; no engine build is needed. See all runnable examples.

Develop locally

This repository is an npm workspace monorepo. Examples, the presentation, and the website link to the local engine:

npm ci
npm run build
npm run example:quickstart

Keep npm run dev running to rebuild engine code and types as you edit. Re-run an example after compilation; no npm publish is needed. Workspace commands and example scope.

Contribute

See CONTRIBUTING.md for building from source and running tests. Report reproducible problems through GitHub Issues, and security vulnerabilities through SECURITY.md.
