I'd like to introduce this little game: NNGAME! At first, it was simply meant to be a series of experiments to explore the capabilities of the wonderful Micro-8 computer ( https://francksauer.com/index.php/micro-8 ): playing with sprites, tiles, bitmaps, and seeing just how far I could push things. And then, one thing led to another... and I ended up making a game! The gameplay is what it is, considering that I'm not a game developer at all (and not really a gamer either—I basically stopped at Galaga, Pac-Man, and Pooyan...). As a result, I probably don't follow the usual game development rules or best practices, so please be forgiving! |

In NNGAME, you control the famous yellow character everyone knows, and your goal is to achieve the highest score possible. To do so, you must collect the red diamond (worth 200 points) as it moves around the screen and bring it back to the treasure chest located at the bottom of the screen (worth 500 points). But watch out! Wolves (yes, I know, it's a bit strange to find wolves at the bottom of the sea...) regularly cross the area. If you touch one of them, your health level decreases. Once it reaches zero, it's Game Over! There's another challenge as well: if a wolf touches the diamond before you've collected it, the diamond disappears and reappears somewhere else on the screen. Fortunately, you can defend yourself. Pressing the Fire (A) button allows you to shoot in all directions and eliminate wolves. Each wolf you destroy earns you 100 points. However, shooting consumes energy. If your energy level reaches zero, it's also Game Over! Don't worry though: each time you return a diamond to the treasure chest, you recover some of your energy. Finally, try to avoid touching Inky, the blue ghost wandering around the treasure chest. Every collision with him costs you points.
In the end, I think this little Micro-8 performs remarkably well! LOFI (the programming language) is clearly much faster than the BASIC interpreters of the era, and it makes it possible to create some very interesting things with relatively little code. A big congratulations to Franck Sauer for creating the Micro-8 and for all the impressive work behind it. Micro-8 computer : https://francksauer.com/index.php/micro-8
