Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on signed commits, including signing requirements, accepted signing methods and handling unsigned commits.
    • Clarified that pull requests must be squash-merged; rebase merging is not available.

Walkthrough

The contribution guide adds a signed-commit policy. It specifies signing requirements for people and automation, describes how to replace unsigned commits, and states that PRs must use squash merges.

Changes

Contribution policy

Layer / File(s) Summary
Signed commit requirements
CONTRIBUTING.adoc
The guide requires signed commits, specifies signing methods for people and automation, and explains how to replace unsigned commits. It states that PRs must use squash merges and that rebase merges are disabled.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~3 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 15a47

These are bounded contribution-guide issues: the section is misnested, and contributors may be told to open an unnecessary PR. Correct the guidance before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 15a47

The change documents security-sensitive contribution requirements without changing code, credentials, permissions, or enforcement. No new signing bypass was identified. Confidence in the operational guidance remains limited because actual merge-method settings and recovery behavior were not fully established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected security scope is contributor and automation guidance for commits reaching this repository’s default branch. The diff does not expand executable access to other repositories, services, secrets, or environments.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The guide places signature acceptance at the default-branch ruleset, distinguishes contributor SSH signatures from GitHub-produced automation signatures, and explicitly warns that an unsigned PR-head commit blocks merging. These are documented controls, not evidence of new enforcement configuration.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The recovery instructions do not authorize bypassing the signing gate. Interrupted, repeated, or concurrent reconstruction remains dependent on external signing and merge enforcement; the guidance alone cannot establish that those controls contain every partial state.

Squash the changes, merge them tight,
No unsigned hops escape the night.

Nest the signed-commit policy under the guide.

== Signed commits creates a sibling level-1 section to == Contributing to Valence Shell. The guide’s topic sections use level 2 headings, so this section is outside the guide’s hierarchy. Change it to === Signed commits.

Review comment at @CONTRIBUTING.adoc at line 432:
Change the “Signed commits” heading from level 1 to level 2 so it is nested
under “Contributing to Valence Shell” and matches the guide’s topic-section
hierarchy.

* Merge PRs with **squash**. The ruleset checks every commit on the PR branch,
not just the result, so one unsigned commit blocks the merge. Re-create such a
branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.

Allow the existing PR when an authorised force-push is possible.

The guidance restricts history-rewrite force-pushes, but it allows them with explicit owner sanction. When that sanction exists and the contributor can update the branch, retain the existing PR. Open a new PR only when the branch cannot be updated.

Suggested fix
- branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.
