…nt lattice

Volpano-Smith typing over L ⊑ H for a while-language with one public and
one secret variable; fuel-indexed semantics. tini proved by induction on
fuel and typing (eval-low, confine). Explicit and implicit flows refused
by the type system and shown to leak by computation. A well-typed
secret-guarded loop that spins on one secret and stops on another makes
termination-insensitivity concrete. Agda --safe --without-K, builtins only.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a formal model of a small language with public and secret variables, plus a proof that well-typed terminating programs preserve public outputs when secret inputs differ.
    • Added examples demonstrating explicit and implicit information leaks, and showing how secret-dependent loops can affect termination.
    • Documented the proof’s scope and limitations, including that termination-sensitive security remains unproven.
  • Tests
    • Added checks confirming that examples of explicit and implicit flows are rejected by the type system and that the core proof passes.

Walkthrough

The change adds an Agda language and type system for a two-point security lattice, proves termination-insensitive noninterference for successful fuel-indexed executions, and adds flow examples, rejection checks, and documentation of the theorem’s scope.

Changes

Secret Types Noninterference

Layer / File(s) Summary
Language and lattice foundations
src/SecretTypes/Prelude.agda, src/SecretTypes/Lattice.agda, src/SecretTypes/Lang.agda, secret-types.agda-lib
Defines proof helpers, the two-point lattice, a language with public and secret variables, store operations, fuel-indexed execution, and low-equivalence. The library configuration enables safe mode and without-K.
Expression and command typing
src/SecretTypes/Typing.agda, tests/reject/*.agda
Adds expression labels and command typing rules. The rejection modules declare explicit and implicit secret-to-public flows that are expected not to type-check.
Noninterference proof and flow witnesses
src/SecretTypes/Noninterference.agda, src/SecretTypes/Witness.agda, scripts/check.sh
Proves low-equivalent results for two successful executions of a well-typed command. Adds explicit and implicit flow witnesses and a secret-guarded loop example. The check script runs the proof and validates expected failures in rejection modules.
Module exports and proof status
src/SecretTypes/All.agda, PROOF-STATUS.adoc, README.adoc, docs/README-section.adoc
Adds an aggregate module that re-exports the SecretTypes modules. Documents the theorem’s scope, its limits, the flow examples, and an unclaimed conjecture about the Echo interpretation.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 4006f

The root-layout check is failing, and the README still displays an outdated proof status. Fix the root entries and status text before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4006f

The confidentiality guarantee is narrowly scoped and explicitly excludes termination leakage. No exploitable new security boundary is demonstrated, but downstream use and validation-workspace isolation remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated execution scope is a local compiler process and checkout-local diagnostic files. The new command receives executable authority from the invoking environment through AGDA or PATH; the inspected source does not establish tenant, service, credential, or production data-store exposure. External consumers and execution isolation remain unknown.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Secret input enters expression evaluation through the high variable. Typing joins expression labels with the program-counter label before permitting assignment and raises that counter for conditional and loop bodies. The lattice has no high-to-low ordering constructor, preventing those flows from receiving the required typing evidence. Untyped commands remain representable, so the theorem depends on its explicit typing precondition.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Each rejection check truncates a fixed per-module log before reading it, preventing ordinary stale-log reuse during sequential execution. There is no per-invocation isolation or locking, and every nonzero compiler exit enters diagnostic inspection without distinguishing abnormal termination. These facts limit validation assurance under concurrent mutation or partial process failure; an independently reachable security exploit is not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If this command becomes an automated security gate, isolate each invocation’s logs, reject abnormal compiler termination, and establish trusted compiler and workspace ownership. These are conditional hardening measures, not findings about a demonstrated hostile execution environment.

A rabbit checks the labels bright,
Then bounds through proofs by lantern light.
The secret stays behind the wall,
While public stores agree in all.
“The loops may pause,” it says with cheer,
“But flows are checked and limits clear!”
