- Children were recruited from the local community and from an ongoing prospective study in Alberta, Canada. All children lived in the Calgary area.
- Exclusion criteria were: 1) complicated or premature birth, 2) diagnosed developmental or psychiatric condition, 3) history of neurosurgery, and 4) contraindications to MRI.
- All parents/guardians provided written consent, participants deemed to have capacity to understand study procedures gave verbal assent prior to enrolment.
- All data was acquired at the Alberta Children's Hospital on a GE 3T Discovery MR750w system.
- Participants were asked to return after 1 year to provide a longitudinal time point with the same scan protocol and cognitive examination battery. Invitations for additional longitudinal visits were extended each year until the study halted in 2024.
- A battery of cognitive examinations was also collected during study visits. Exams were conducted in an isolated exam room with the examiner and participant only. Subtests from several studies were included in this battery, and administered if the participant was of appropriate age per subtest.
- Cognitive tests administered included: NEPSY-II, Woodcock-Johnson-IV, along with behavioural questionnaires: Language Use Inventory and Child Communication Checklist-2.
