Adds deploy/gcp/, the phase 1 of #848, landed as a copy of the Azure bootstrap (option 1, as agreed on the issue). Fixes the symptom that a box cannot be launched on Google Cloud without deriving everything by hand.

  • launch.sh, teardown.sh, bootstrap.sh.in, render.py, live_test.sh and a README, taken from the tested prototype in the issue (33 local checks plus a live Compute Engine run, per the issue).
  • scripts/check_gcp_template.py and .github/workflows/gcp-ci.yml, keyed on deploy/gcp/**.
  • A row in deploy/README.md.

Verified here: render, hash (real Caddy basic_auth), bash -n and shellcheck all pass. The sandboxed boot test and the agentbox apply --root check need passwordless sudo, which this box lacks, so they run for the first time in CI. No live GCP run from this box.

Not in this PR: the live deploy workflow (needs a maintainer-owned GCP project), the launch-page entry, the Terraform module, and the parity check against Azure. Follow-up: fold into #530.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Adds the gcloud launcher, teardown, the bootstrap template and renderer,
a live test script, and a local check plus CI workflow. Landed as a copy of
the Azure bootstrap (option 1 on the issue); folding into #530 follows.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Adds a GCE deployment path for agent-box. It includes a launcher, startup-script renderer and bootstrap, resource teardown, deployment documentation, a live deployment test, a local integration checker, and a GitHub Actions workflow.

Changes

GCE deployment

Layer / File(s) Summary
Render and bootstrap agent-box
deploy/gcp/render.py, deploy/gcp/bootstrap.sh.in
The renderer validates deployment values and inserts them into the startup template. The bootstrap script configures the runtime, verifies instance metadata and settings, applies agent-box configuration, and reports readiness.
Provision and remove GCE resources
deploy/gcp/launch.sh, deploy/gcp/teardown.sh, deploy/README.md, deploy/gcp/README.md
The launcher creates or reuses network resources and a static IP, creates a VM, and polls bootstrap status. Teardown attempts to remove associated resources. The documentation describes launch, resource details, costs, diagnosis, validation, and known gaps.
Exercise a live GCE deployment
deploy/gcp/live_test.sh
The live test checks deployment access, authentication, instance settings, and optional reboot behavior. Its exit cleanup attempts teardown.
Validate rendering and bootstrap locally
scripts/check_gcp_template.py, .github/workflows/gcp-ci.yml
The local checker tests rendering, password-hash handling, and sandboxed bootstrap behavior. The workflow installs its validation tools and runs the checker for matching changes or manual dispatch.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 541da

This adds a new, self-contained GCE deployment path. As written, its CI check may fail before validation starts. The local checker can also run a script as root from a directory any local user can modify. Teardown can falsely fail when another deployment's name begins with the same prefix. Fix these before relying on the new validation.

Review comments at @.github/workflows/gcp-ci.yml:
- Line 37: Set up Python before the pip install step so installing checker
dependencies does not fail due to the runner’s externally managed environment.
In the GCP CI workflow, add actions/setup-python before the dependency
installation, or use a virtual environment for both installing dependencies and
running scripts/check_gcp_template.py.

Review comments at @deploy/gcp/teardown.sh:
- Line 26: Update the firewall-rule filter in the teardown check to match only
the exact `$name-https` and `$name-iap-ssh` rules, so similarly prefixed
deployment names are not reported as leftover.

Review comments at @scripts/check_gcp_template.py:
- Line 199: In the temporary-directory setup used by run_boot, remove the chmod
calls that change root and cap to mode 0o777, preserving mkdtemp’s private
permissions; remove the corresponding permission change in test_mismatch as
well.
