README at github.brandonperfetti.com, Vitest suite, CI, social preview image

TL;DR

  • Adds a Vitest suite (52 tests, no network) for the data shaping behind the charts, the GitHub loaders, the URL/timezone helpers, and a static render of the home route from stubbed API responses.
  • Runs lint, the Prettier check and the tests in a new CI workflow on PRs and on pushes to main/develop.
  • Points the README's live demo at https://github.brandonperfetti.com, leads with a screenshot and a per-route chart table, and corrects stack facts.
  • Adds public/og-image.png (1280×640 screenshot of the overview charts) and uses it as the og:image / twitter:image on /, /repos and /featured.

Scope

  • tests/**, vitest.config.mts, package.json (test, test:watch, vitest dev dependency), package-lock.json
  • .github/workflows/ci.yml (new)
  • README.md
  • public/og-image.png (new); app/page.tsx, app/featured/page.tsx, app/repos/page.tsx (Open Graph image path only)

Untouched on purpose: lib/github.ts and every route's data flow, the REVALIDATE_SECRET flow (app/api/revalidate), and the charts.

Key changes

  • Vitest 4 (not 5): Vitest 5 requires @types/node 22+, this repo pins ^20. Vitest 4 accepts 20 and runs on the Node 24 the CI uses.
  • Tests never reach GitHub: a fetch router in tests/helpers/github-fixtures.ts answers by URL and throws on anything unrouted. Time is frozen at 2026-09-25 so weekly and monthly windows are deterministic, and the GitHub Search rate limiter is driven with fake timers.
  • The home-route smoke test awaits the async server component and renders the tree with renderToStaticMarkup, wrapped in the app's theme provider; it also covers the "every upstream call fails" path (page still renders with zeros).
  • README facts corrected from source: the old demo URL (github-commit-dashboard.vercel.app) serves an unrelated app by another user; next-themes is not a dependency (the theme provider is custom); GITHUB_USERNAME is not read anywhere (the username is the USERNAME constant); data is cached with five-minute revalidation, not real-time.

Why

The repo is linked from a LinkedIn Featured card and named on a resume. Someone clicking through found a demo link to a stranger's app, a README that mis-described the stack, no tests, and a grey link preview (no social image). This PR fixes the parts that are a diff. Attaching the subdomain in Vercel/DNS and uploading the repo's social preview in GitHub Settings are dashboard actions and are handled separately.

Risk / Mitigation

  • Risk: The README demo link points at github.brandonperfetti.com before that host serves.
Mitigation: Merge after the Vercel domain is attached; until then the link 404s where the old one showed the wrong app.
  • Risk: Tests drift from GitHub's real response shapes.
Mitigation: Fixtures mirror the fields the code reads; the commits stub honours since, the repos stub honours Link pagination. Anything unrouted fails loudly.
  • Risk: CI adds a required-check candidate that does not exist on main yet.
Mitigation: Nothing is required yet; branch protection is a separate decision.

How to Test (Reviewer Checklist)

  1. Install dependencies (npm install).
  2. Run linting (npm run lint).
  3. Run production build (npm run build) with NEXT_PUBLIC_SITE_URL exported.
  4. Run automated tests (npm test): 4 files, 52 tests, under one second.
  5. Smoke-test key routes: /, /activity, /repos, /featured.
  6. View source on / and confirm og:image resolves to /og-image.png.

Breaking Changes?

Breaking Changes: No

Release Notes

  • Test suite and CI workflow added; README refreshed; social preview image added.

Rollback Plan

  • Revert the four commits on this branch; no data, config or runtime behaviour changes outside Open Graph metadata.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added social-sharing images for the home, featured projects, and repositories pages.
  • Tests
    • Added automated checks for dashboard content, GitHub data handling, contribution charts, date calculations, and site settings.
  • Chores
    • Added automated lint, formatting, and test checks for pull requests and updates to the main development branches.
    • Expanded setup and deployment guidance, including prerequisites, data sources, caching, and configuration.

Covers the pure shaping helpers in lib/github.ts (levels, streaks, calendar
weeks, weekly windows, sparkline scaling, push cadence), the GitHub loaders
behind the charts (contribution scraping, repo listing with pagination and
fallbacks, pinned repos over GraphQL, commit activity summary, commit timing
heatmap with timezone bucketing, repo risk buckets, release cadence, PR cycle
time and merge rate, issue backlog delta), the URL and timezone helpers, and a
static render of the home route from stubbed GitHub responses, including the
case where every upstream request fails.

Every GitHub request goes through a fetch router that throws on unrouted
URLs, so the suite cannot reach the network. Vitest 4 is used rather than 5
because 5 requires @types/node 22 or newer and this repo pins 20.
Lint, the Prettier check and the Vitest suite now run on every pull request
and on pushes to main and develop. The production build is left to Vercel
and to the existing env guard so CI does not depend on GitHub API rate limits.
The live demo link went to github-commit-dashboard.vercel.app, which serves
an unrelated project by another user. It now points at the dashboard's own
subdomain. The first screen leads with a screenshot and a per-route table of
the charts. Corrects the stack table (Recharts and GSAP were missing,
next-themes is not used), removes the unused GITHUB_USERNAME variable,
drops the real-time wording (data is cached with five-minute revalidation),
and adds Testing and CI sections.
The home, repos and featured routes advertised /globe.svg as their Open
Graph image, which link previews cannot render. A 1280x640 screenshot of the
overview charts now serves as og:image and twitter:image.

Declare read-only workflow permissions.

If the repository default grants write access, actions/checkout@v4 persists that token for the later npm steps. The test and dependency code can then use write-capable Git credentials. Add workflow-level contents: read permissions.

Pin the action references to reviewed commit SHAs.

actions/checkout@v4 and actions/setup-node@v4 resolve through mutable tags. If either tag is retargeted, this workflow can execute action code that was not reviewed with the workflow. Replace both tags with their reviewed full commit SHAs.

…ntials

The job only installs, lints and tests, so it needs no write access and the
checkout credential does not need to persist into the Git config where
dependency scripts could read it.

On the two nitpicks in the review summary:

  • Read-only permissions — accepted, fixed in 5f0465c: workflow-level permissions: contents: read. The job only runs npm ci, lint, Prettier and Vitest.
  • Pin actions to commit SHAs — declined for this PR. The repo's existing workflows (.github/workflows/env-guard.yml, revalidate-cache.yml, warm-route-cache.yml) reference actions/checkout@v4 and actions/setup-node@v4 by tag, and the repo has no Dependabot or Renovate config to keep pinned SHAs current, so pinning one workflow would diverge from the other three and go stale silently. Pinning all four plus adding Dependabot for actions is a reasonable follow-up, filed as its own change rather than folded into this one.
