Summary

Adds docs/EPISODE_IDS.md, the contract for episode identity: what identifies an episode, the fixed recipe ID formula, how keys are taken from stored data, how ID collisions are handled, and how the phone keeps several IDs for one episode.

Motivation

The recipe ID is computed in Kotlin and JS today, and more implementations will follow. The rules lived only in code comments and tests, so nothing written down said which parts can never change or how a collision must be handled.

What changed

  • docs/EPISODE_IDS.md: identity (show ID, catalog key); the recipe formula, trim set and shared fixture hash (marked fixed); legacy and synthetic keys; collision rules for Room and keyless lookups; alias states, the single owner and projected state; validation; how the contract may change.
  • ARCHITECTURE.md, core/rss/README.md and the AGENTS.md documentation map link to it.
  • EpisodeRecipeId.recipeId rejects show IDs above 2^53 − 1 (SHOW_ID_MAX), matching the JS implementation, so both agree on every episode namespace.

Behavior & compatibility

No listener-visible change. EpisodeRecipeId isn't used for storage yet; Podcast Index show IDs are far below the new limit.

Release copy (verbatim — highest priority)

CHANGELOG.md (required developer copy)

Added

  • docs/EPISODE_IDS.md documents episode identity, recipe IDs, collision handling and aliases.

Fixed

  • EpisodeRecipeId rejects show IDs above 2^53 − 1, matching the scripts implementation.

README What's New / Upcoming (required for user-impact changes)

Test plan

  • The formula, trim set and fixture hash match EpisodeRecipeId, episode-recipe-id.js and EpisodeRecipeIdTest.
  • ./gradlew :core:rss:testDebugUnitTest --tests EpisodeRecipeIdTest: 23 tests pass, including the new show-ID bounds.
  • Required checks are green before merge

Documents what identifies an episode, the fixed recipe ID formula and trim set, keys from stored data, collision handling and phone aliases, and links it from the architecture docs.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added a shared reference for episode identity and recipe IDs, covering key generation, duplicate feeds, aliases, collisions, and related validation rules.
    • Updated architecture and RSS documentation to point to the episode identity contract and clarify fixture requirements.

Adds a document that defines episode identity and recipe IDs, including collision handling, aliases, and related processing rules. Existing documentation now links to the contract or clarifies the shared-fixture requirement.

Changes: Episode identity documentation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Episode identity contract and references
docs/EPISODE_IDS.md, ARCHITECTURE.md, AGENTS.md, core/rss/README.md
Defines episode identity, recipe IDs, collision handling, alias states, and related rules. Adds links to the contract and updates the EpisodeRecipeId fixture requirement wording.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~8 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 02b12

The new episode identity contract leaves large show-ID handling inconsistent between Kotlin and JavaScript. Align and enforce the supported range; the issue is limited to unusually large IDs.

Explanation

No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. (4 skipped: 4 unsupported.)

Full details: Architecture Compliance

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes only AGENTS.md, ARCHITECTURE.md, core/rss/README.md, and adds docs/EPISODE_IDS.md; it adds no production imports, dependencies, DI framework, PostHog usage, PlaybackRepository, or AppContainer graph. The architecture edit only links the new contract. Existing EpisodeRecipeId, identity logic, and the 31→32 Room migration already provide the documented behavior, so this PR does not introduce a broken storage contract or require a migration.

Full details: Module Readme Updated

Explanation

The authoritative PR diff changes only AGENTS.md, ARCHITECTURE.md, core/rss/README.md, and docs/EPISODE_IDS.md. It changes no production Kotlin under app/src/main/, core/<module>/src/main/, or feature/<module>/src/main/. Therefore the README requirement does not apply.

Full details: Jvm Tests For Changed Logic

Explanation

PASS: The authoritative PR diff changes only documentation files: AGENTS.md, ARCHITECTURE.md, core/rss/README.md, and adds docs/EPISODE_IDS.md. It adds or changes no production logic, so JVM unit-test coverage is not required by this check.

Full details: Unresolved Review Threads

Explanation

One outstanding CodeRabbit finding remains unresolved: docs/EPISODE_IDS.md:10 (Severity: Minor) requires a shared safe show-ID range and Kotlin enforcement. No posted review threads were returned, but the newly generated finding is explicitly outstanding under the review context.

Resolution

Define the show-ID range as 1..Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER, enforce the same range in EpisodeRecipeId, then mark the finding resolved. Alternatively, explicitly dismiss it with a short rationale.
