Summary

Stops the catalog sync from ever writing the text [object Object] into catalog rows.

Motivation

The sync's Turso client turned any object it was given into the string [object Object]. 7,751 catalog rows hold that text in one or more columns (latest-episode chapters, transcripts and people, website links, episode counts and dates, and a few titles and descriptions). No current code path writes those values; they come from an earlier writer. Nothing stopped it from happening again.

What changed

  • Binder (lib/turso.js). mapArgType throws a TypeError for objects, arrays and functions instead of calling String() on them. Structured values must be JSON.stringify'd on purpose. turso.text() is unchanged.
  • Scrubbed row values (lib/catalog-rows.js). Stage 2's API import and stage 3's latest-episode update now build their values through apiImportArgs and tipUpdateArgs. Optional text becomes '' or null and bad numbers become 0, the same as a missing field, so one odd Podcast Index field can't fail a 50-show import batch or block a show's tip update on every run. A tip episode ID that isn't a non-empty string or a number fails the write, and stage 2 drops junk category values before joining the rest.
  • scripts/README.md documents both.

Behavior & compatibility

  • Listeners: no change.
  • Deploy: the sync runs outside GitHub Actions, so nothing changes until the runner is updated.
  • Existing [object Object] values are not touched by this change.

Fixed

  • The catalog sync refuses to store objects as [object Object] text: its Turso client rejects them, and the show import and latest-episode update scrub Podcast Index values first.

README What's New / Upcoming (required for user-impact changes)

Test plan

  • npm run test:sync --prefix scripts: 121 tests. 11 are new: scalar binding, refusal of objects, arrays, dates and functions (nothing is sent when one statement in a batch is bad), import and tip-update column order and fallbacks, scrubbing of objects and stored [object Object] values, invalid tip episode IDs, and category maps with junk values.
  • Runner deploy, then check the next runs for binder errors.
  • Required checks are green before merge

…t Object]

The Turso binder now rejects objects and arrays. Stage 2's API import and stage 3's latest-episode update scrub Podcast Index values first, so an odd optional field becomes empty rather than failing the write.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Podcast catalog imports and latest-episode updates now handle missing or malformed optional values more safely, reducing the risk of failed writes.
    • Database writes reject objects and arrays instead of storing them as [object Object]; structured values must be explicitly serialized.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how to serialize structured values for database writes and how optional catalog values are handled during imports and episode updates.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for catalog value cleanup, database argument handling, and rejection of unsupported values.

The Turso client now rejects structured values unless callers serialize them explicitly. Podcast import and episode sync writes use argument builders that apply defaults and sanitize values before binding.

Changes: Catalog write arguments

Layer / File(s) Summary
Turso scalar binding contract
scripts/sync/lib/turso.js, scripts/sync/lib/turso.test.js, scripts/package.json, scripts/README.md
Turso argument mapping rejects objects, arrays, and functions instead of coercing them to text. Tests cover scalar mappings, serialized JSON, rejection before fetch, and the new test commands. The README documents the binding behavior.
Catalog row builders and sync integration
scripts/sync/lib/catalog-rows.js, scripts/sync/lib/catalog-rows.test.js, scripts/sync/02-import-podcasts.js, scripts/sync/03-sync-episodes.js, scripts/README.md
apiImportArgs and tipUpdateArgs build ordered argument lists with defaults and value cleanup. The import and episode sync scripts use these builders. Tests cover ordering, fallback values, serialization, and binding. The README describes the catalog-row cleanup.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 92d66

The category-value issue is fixed before import writes, and invalid tip IDs do not stop unrelated show updates. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Full details: Unresolved Review Threads

Explanation

No unresolved review threads remain. The only returned CodeRabbit thread is marked discussion=resolved, and the current review reports zero actionable findings. Prior failure addressed: The prior latest.id finding is now marked discussion=resolved and the review record says it was confirmed addressed; the current review has zero actionable findings.

Full details: Architecture Compliance

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes only Node.js catalog-sync scripts, tests, package metadata, and documentation. The diff adds no Android module dependencies or imports, feature-to-feature references, PostHog usage, Hilt/Koin/Dagger/MockK, PlaybackRepository, AppContainer, or designsystem/playback dependency. The new catalog-rows.js depends only on existing sync helpers (scalars.js and text.js). The changed episode-ID handling still binds the latest episode ID as text, matching the prior String(latest.id) behavior; no Android identity, storage, or migration contract is changed.

Full details: Module Readme Updated

Explanation

The authoritative PR diff changes only scripts files: JavaScript, JSON, and scripts/README.md. It does not change production Kotlin under app/src/main/, core/<module>/src/main/, or feature/<module>/src/main/. The README requirement is therefore not triggered.

Full details: Jvm Tests For Changed Logic

Explanation

The PR adds production catalog-sync logic in scripts/sync/lib/catalog-rows.js and changes scripts/sync/lib/turso.js plus stages 2 and 3. The PR adds only Node tests under scripts/sync/lib/; it adds no hermetic JVM tests under src/test. This violates the check requirement for changed production logic.

Resolution

Add hermetic JVM unit tests under an appropriate src/test tree for the new catalog-row and binder behavior, including valid, empty/fallback, and invalid/error cases. The existing Node tests do not satisfy the JVM test requirement.

Scrub category values before joining them.

If a Podcast Index category value is an object, join(', ') converts it to "[object Object]". apiImportArgs receives only the resulting string, so its scalar scrubber cannot remove it; the import still stores that text. Filter or normalize category values before join.
