This one seems to be the only asphalt package in Conda. Is there merit in only having the core there?

I think so, jpterm uses Asphalt core, and I'm planning to use it in jupyverse too.
The former is not yet available on conda-forge, but the latter is, and it is a requirement for all Jupyter projects to be conda-installable.
