Sentry-V

Detect vegetation stress so environmental teams know where to act.

Sentry-V is a vegetation stress observatory built to monitor ecosystem change over time. It uses remote sensing, site configuration, validation guardrails, and statistical logic to help identify unusual vegetation behavior.

The goal is simple:

Build a repeatable ecological monitoring system that helps naturalists, citizen scientists, and environmental teams notice change earlier, investigate with better context, and connect digital observation with real fieldwork.


What Sentry-V Is

Sentry-V is a Digital Sentry for vegetation monitoring.

It is designed to watch a site over time, summarize vegetation behavior, and flag patterns that may deserve human attention.

Sentry-V does not replace fieldwork. It supports it.

The system is meant to help answer questions like:

  • Is vegetation behaving normally for this time of year?
  • Is greenness or moisture lower than expected?
  • Is the signal strong enough to trust?
  • Should someone visit the site and investigate?
  • What environmental context may explain the pattern?

Sentry-V is part of a larger vision: an ecological observatory where people can learn to monitor the natural world using open, practical, reproducible tools.


Project Purpose

Sentry-V has three connected purposes.

1. Community Observatory

Sentry-V is meant to become a fun and practical tool for naturalists, citizen scientists, students, and local environmental stewards.

The goal is to give people a copy of the system, teach best practices, and encourage them to combine digital monitoring with real-world field checks.

This means:

  • observing local sites
  • learning remote sensing basics
  • checking unusual signals in the field
  • documenting what they see
  • teaming up with local conservation groups
  • building a stronger culture of environmental awareness

The system helps people become more watchful stewards of the places they care about.

2. Viva Vivaria Monitoring Projects

Sentry-V is also used as a working observatory for Viva Vivaria.

This allows ongoing public storytelling through videos such as:

“I monitored this site for vegetation stress this month.”

The system can run on my own account, monitor selected sites, and produce updates that become educational content.

This creates a public-facing digital lab where people can watch the system grow, learn from the process, and see how environmental monitoring works in real life.

3. Professional Deployment

If an environmental team, nonprofit, school, city, or conservation group wants the same type of system deployed for their own site, Sentry-V can become a professional service.

Possible models include:

  • one-time installation and handoff
  • custom setup in a client cloud account
  • training for staff or volunteers
  • monthly monitoring and interpretation support
  • ongoing retainer for system maintenance and reporting

The free community layer builds awareness.

The professional layer supports teams that want a complete handoff, custom deployment, or continued monitoring support.


Current Version

Current stage: v0.1

Sentry-V v0.1 is the Vegetation Observatory Core.

This version focuses on proving the structure of the system. It establishes the main project architecture and separates the monitoring logic into clear parts.

At this stage, Sentry-V is not trying to be a finished commercial platform. It is a working foundation.

Version 0.1 proves that the system can be organized as a repeatable monitoring pattern.


What v0.1 Demonstrates

Sentry-V v0.1 demonstrates:

  • a clear project structure
  • separation between science logic and site configuration
  • room for validation guardrails
  • a repeatable execution entry point
  • a place for outputs and future reports
  • a blueprint space for future deployment
  • a system design that can grow into client-ready observatories

This is the first heartbeat of the observatory.

engine

The science and processing logic.

This is where the core vegetation monitoring methods belong, including remote sensing workflows, vegetation index calculations, anomaly logic, and future statistical interpretation tools.

config

The target and site configuration layer.

This is where monitored sites, regions of interest, monitoring parameters, thresholds, and site-specific settings can be defined.

The goal is to make Sentry-V configurable without rewriting the core engine.

validation

The guardrail layer.

This is where the system checks inputs before running. Validation helps prevent bad site definitions, missing fields, invalid date ranges, or unsafe configuration changes.

This matters because Sentry-V is designed to eventually be assisted by agents and reused across multiple sites.

outputs

The evidence layer.

This folder is for generated summaries, reports, exports, charts, logs, or other results produced by the system.

Outputs help turn raw monitoring into something understandable.

operations

The runbook and operating layer.

This is where operating notes, workflow instructions, monitoring procedures, and maintenance guidance can live.

The goal is to make the system understandable not only to the builder, but also to future users, collaborators, and client teams.

blueprint

The future deployment recipe.

This folder is for documenting how Sentry-V could eventually be replicated into another account or environment.

The blueprint layer supports the long-term goal of building systems that can be handed off, installed, or customized for environmental teams.

run_sentry.py

The main execution entry point.

This script is the front door for running the sentry workflow.

Sentry-V is built around an important principle:

Detection does not equal causation.

The system can detect unusual vegetation behavior.

It can suggest possible hypotheses.

It can provide context.

But it should not claim final cause without human investigation, field evidence, and ecological interpretation.

For example, a vegetation signal may be influenced by:

What Sentry-V Is Not

Sentry-V is not a replacement for scientists, conservation workers, or local knowledge.

It is also not a magic health detector.

Vegetation indices are helpful signals, but they are not the whole story.

Sentry-V should not be used to claim:

  • exact plant health without field validation
  • final cause of stress without investigation
  • management recommendations without local expertise
  • perfect accuracy in every landscape

The system is a watchful assistant.

The human remains the interpreter.

Sentry-V is meant to support a future Digital Observatory Community.

The idea is to help people build local monitoring habits:

  2. Configure a monitoring target.

Project Status

Sentry-V is currently in early development.

This repository represents the foundation of the vegetation observatory.

The project will grow step by step.

Each version should make the system more useful, more understandable, and more ready for real-world monitoring.
