fix: drop ga4_* tool refs, use hosted /mcp connector, add tool-ref guard - #24
Removes every ga4_* tool reference from skills, agents, the SDK runner's read-only list, and tools/directory-tools.json (34 → 31 tools). Skills now point to get_pixel_health, get_attribution and run_launch_preflight, or to a GA4 export the user supplies. No generate_* references existed; the new guard keeps them out.
The Claude .mcp.json (repo root and packages/claude-directory) now points at https://mcp.synterai.com/mcp. It is OAuth-only: type, url and description only, with no API-key header. README, quickstart and the SDK README match. validate-manifests.js and build-packages.py enforce the new URL. Cursor and portable OpenAI configs are unchanged.
No "Free" wording was present. The guard now blocks it.
scripts/check-directory-tools.js fails on:
ga4_*/generate_* tool references in instructions, context/, output-styles/, the SessionStart hook and the README
any tool not in the allowlist
standalone "free" wording in instructions, the README and the Claude manifests
a .mcp.json that isn't the OAuth-only /mcp server
It checks both the repo and the packages/claude-directory bundle. It already runs in CI (directory-tools.yml and validate.yml).
Cross-check against synter-media (read-only)
apps/ppc-backend/services/mcp_directory_client.pyDIRECTORY_TOOLS (42 tools on main and staging): all 31 remaining plugin tools are in that set. Note: the backend set still lists ga4_get_properties, ga4_get_report and ga4_get_conversions, so this PR is narrower than the backend's directory profile. The plugin goes by what the hosted Claude connector actually exposes. If GA4 should be removed from the connector entirely, DIRECTORY_TOOLS needs a follow-up there.
https://mcp.synterai.com/mcp returns 401 with an OAuth resource_metadata challenge. /.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/mcp reports resource: https://mcp.synterai.com/mcp.
Tests
New regression tests in scripts/check-directory-tools.test.js cover four cases: a clean fixture passes; ga4_*/generate_* refs fail in a skill, the hook, the README and the allowlist; "free" fails in a skill, the README and a manifest, while "credential-free" and "freed" pass; and four wrong .mcp.json variants fail (root URL, old domain, API-key header, wrong transport). Against the old checker, 6 of 10 tests fail.
test_build_packages.py: the directory validator now rejects the root URL. Package digests were updated deliberately for the content change.
claude plugin validate --strict passes for the repo and packages/claude-directory.
build-zip.sh --include-new-draft passes.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Changes
The supported tool list now includes 31 tools; direct GA4 property, report, and conversion tools are no longer available.
Conversion checks and cross-platform reporting now use attribution and pixel-health tools. For GA4 property, event, or country-level details, provide an export from the GA4 interface.
Updated the Claude connection endpoint to https://mcp.synterai.com/mcp.
The hosted Claude connector does not expose ga4_* or generate_* tools.
Remove ga4_* references from skills, agents, SDK runner and the tool
directory (34 -> 31), point the Claude .mcp.json at the OAuth-only
https://mcp.synterai.com/mcp endpoint, and extend
check-directory-tools.js to fail on unavailable tool families, 'free'
wording, or a non-canonical .mcp.json in the repo and directory bundle.

Walkthrough
The directory removes three GA4 tools and updates agent and skill instructions to use supported tools or user-provided GA4 exports. Claude’s MCP endpoint changes to /mcp, and directory validation covers more files and configuration rules.
The directory tool list and SDK read-only allowlist remove three GA4 tools. Agent and skill instructions replace GA4 tool references with supported tools or user-provided exports.
The checker scans additional instruction surfaces, README content, manifests, and the Claude directory bundle. It checks unavailable tool names, banned wording, and OAuth-only MCP configuration. Tests cover the expanded checks.
Reporting and tracking guidance can present unsupported comparisons as verified results. Correct those instructions before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to fcc90
The change reduces unattended tool permissions and preserves credential-free connection configuration. No introduced security defect was established, but authorization and session compatibility at the newly selected hosted endpoint have not been verified end to end.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The affected trust boundary is between plugin or SDK callers and the hosted advertising MCP service. Available operations include campaign execution and budget changes, but the inspected changes do not expand local unattended authority. Actual account, tenant, and downstream asset scope depends on remote authorization that was not verified.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Local controls reject additional MCP servers, static credential fields, and noncanonical Claude URLs. The directory-specific package validator also rejects hooks, unapproved files, and local execution instructions. These controls constrain package capabilities but do not prove token audience enforcement or tenant isolation at the hosted endpoint.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The live check fails on unsuccessful RPC responses, duplicate tool names, or repeated pagination cursors. Its legacy endpoint overrides predate the PR and do not change shipped Claude configuration. A successful tools/list check proves only that the selected server contains the required names, not that extra tools are absent or their authorization is correct.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Before relying on unattended operation, verify the canonical /mcp resource's OAuth audience and tenant binding, real initialization/session behavior, and effective tool permissions. Treat legacy-endpoint inventory checks as evidence for that selected endpoint rather than proof of the shipped Claude connection.

Apply the convention across the campaign's final URLs, and confirm the parameters survive to the landing page (redirects sometimes strip them). Check they resolve in analytics with `ga4_get_report` (source/medium) after traffic starts. Consistent UTMs make the **attribution** and **report** skills far more accurate.

Require a matching GA4 export for UTM verification.
The hosted get_attribution tool accepts attribution parameters and produces Markov-chain multi-touch attribution. It does not provide documented UTM source/medium resolution. A user can therefore follow this instruction, call get_attribution, and still be unable to verify that the campaign UTMs resolved in analytics. Use get_attribution for attribution analysis, and require a matching GA4 export for source/medium verification.

- Conversions roughly double the true count: event ID missing on one side.
- Counts too low: IDs present but formatted differently on each side, or event names mismatched.
- Platform reports far more conversions than GA4 shows (`ga4_get_report` on the conversion event): dedup broken — this is the most common finding.
- Platform reports far more conversions than GA4 shows (compare with `get_attribution` or a GA4 export of the conversion event): dedup broken — this is the most common finding.
get_attribution is documented as a cross-platform attribution view, not as a GA4 property or event report. If its response does not contain the selected GA4 event count, require a GA4 export before labeling the discrepancy as broken deduplication. Update the generated directory copy.
