Remove expression-based filter APIs cpp/include/cudf/stream_compaction.hpp, cpp/src/stream_compaction/filter/filter.cu, cpp/CMakeLists.txt, python/pylibcudf/pylibcudf/stream_compaction.*, python/pylibcudf/pylibcudf/libcudf/stream_compaction.pxd |
The C++ and Python expression-based filter APIs and the JIT filter implementation are removed. Related imports and the CMake source-list entry are also removed. |
Update filtering consumers cpp/src/io/parquet/reader_impl.cpp, cpp/benchmarks/filter/minmax_filter.cpp |
The Parquet reader uses a shared BOOL8 retention-mask path for predicate results. The benchmark constructs the filter table view before selecting the engine. |

The implementation is otherwise consistent, but focused Parquet regression coverage should be added to guard JIT parity and filter-only nullable reads.

Explanation
The title "[FEA] Drop Obsolete
cudf::filterAPI" matches the main change. The PR removes thecudf::filterandcudf::filter_extendedAPI family, their types, and their implementation in filter.cu, and the headers and Python bindings that exposed them. The title is short, specific, and states the primary change from the developer's view.

Explanation
The description explains the change. It says the redundant
cudf::filterAPI family is removed and that internal callers move tocudf::transformfollowed by mask application. It also gives the history of the implementation, which matches the summaries that show filter.cu, stream_compaction.hpp, the pylibcudf bindings, and the parquet reader being updated.

deferring to next release to allow the APIs go through a deprecation cycle |
This pull request deprecates the public C++ filter APIs for release 26.12 while preserving their existing behavior and ABI. This includes the legacy UDF `cudf::filter` overload, `cudf::filter_extended`, and the AST-expression `cudf::filter` overload. The deprecation messages and API documentation recommend composing the existing predicate and mask APIs instead: - For CUDA or PTX predicates, use `cudf::transform` to produce a boolean mask, followed by `cudf::apply_retention_mask` or `cudf::apply_deletion_mask`. - For AST predicates, use `cudf::compute_column` to produce a boolean mask, followed by `cudf::apply_retention_mask` or `cudf::apply_deletion_mask`. The legacy `cudf::filter` warning is also updated so it no longer recommends `cudf::filter_extended`, which is now deprecated as part of the same API family. There are no runtime or device-side changes in this PR. Prerequisite to #23934 Authors: - Basit Ayantunde (https://github.com/lamarrr) Approvers: - Bradley Dice (https://github.com/bdice) - Vukasin Milovanovic (https://github.com/vuule) URL: #24062
Keep the filter APIs and Python bindings removed while retaining upstream's replacement-API tests and benchmark updates. Resolve Parquet predicate evaluation against the current compute_column_jit signature.

Description
This PR removes the now-redundant
cudf::filterAPI family and migrates its remaining internal callers tocudf::transformfollowed by mask application.cudf::filterwas introduced in #19070 as a dedicated JIT filtering path. It evaluated the predicate into a full-length selection stencil that could be consumed directly bycopy_if, avoiding the separate Boolean-mask and compacted gather-map materialization used byapply_boolean_mask.Follow-up benchmarking in #20222 exposed a performance tradeoff. Although the stencil-based implementation was faster at moderate and high selectivities, it became slower at very low selectivity, particularly for wide tables, because
copy_ifscanned the entire stencil for every output column. The associated memory-bandwidth costs compounded as more columns were filtered. That PR replaced the stencil-copy implementation with a Boolean predicate mask followed byapply_boolean_mask.The dedicated filter predicate kernel was subsequently removed in #21443, which implemented
cudf::filterusingtransform_extendedandapply_boolean_mask. The transform APIs were later consolidated intocudf::transformin #23489.Consequently,
cudf::filterno longer provides a distinct implementation or performance optimization. Its behavior can be expressed directly using:cudf::transformfollowed bycudf::apply_boolean_maskfor retention-mask semantics.cudf::transformfollowed bycudf::apply_deletion_mask, introduced in Implementcudf::apply_deletion_maskAPI #22144, for deletion-mask semantics. This PR removes
cudf::filter,cudf::filter_extended, and their supporting API types and implementation, and updates existing internal callers to use those underlying operations directly.Checklist
