[None][feat] Call LLM(batched_logits_processor=...) on the PyTorch backend - #21044
LLM(batched_logits_processor=...) and SamplingParams(apply_batched_logits_processor=True) are both accepted on the PyTorch backend, but neither does anything there: nothing under _torch/pyexecutor reads the LLM field, and the request flag is dropped when the executor request is built. The batched processor was a feature of the removed TensorRT backend that was never wired into the PyTorch executor, and the docs still present it as available.
This PR makes the PyTorch backend honor both, with the existing public API unchanged:
DecoderRunner._execute_logit_post_processors already walks the scheduled requests and hands each one's logits rows to its own logits_processor(s). It now also collects the rows, token ids, request ids and client ids of every request that set apply_batched_logits_processor, and hands them to the LLM's batched processor in one call per step, after the walk. Each logits entry is the request's rows viewed as [beam_width, 1, vocab], the shape the per-request processors see, and a view into the step's logits tensor, so in-place edits land. Under beam search the rows are the live beams and the token ids are each beam's own history ([#19902][fix] Give logits processors each beam's hypothesis under beam search #20915). The row offsets and the vocabulary-sharded spec-worker gather are the ones the per-request path already uses. The walk now skips a context request that is not its last chunk (is_last_context_chunk): get_tokens(0) is already the whole prompt during chunked prefill, so the prompt-length check alone handed a middle chunk's row to the processors. That fix applies to the per-request processors too.
PyExecutor registers llm_args.batched_logits_processor with the model engine, the same way the beam-history and in-graph sampling hooks are registered. The registration is a module-level function so the constructor path has its own tests; it raises at construction when the model engine has no post-processor walk to attach the processor to.
The request flag is attached to the executor request in BaseWorker, kept on LlmRequest as py_apply_batched_logits_processor, copied to child requests (n > 1), and crosses pipeline stages with the other Python-only request attributes.
A request with the flag stays on the eager sampling tier, like a request with its own processors: in-graph sampling would otherwise read the logits before the processor runs. greedy_tokens_usable lists the flag for the same reason.
LLM.generate refuses the flag when the LLM has no batched processor (ValueError, matching the neighbouring return_routed_experts check), and refuses it with speculative decoding (RequestError, so trtllm-serve answers 4xx before the stream opens): one-model workers sample inside the forward, so the processor's edits never reach the tokens, and the drafter-based modes sample 1 + draft_len rows per request while the walk steps by beam width, so it would hand the processor another request's rows. The executor-side DSpark ragged-verification check from [TRTLLM-14620][feat] Add DSpark ragged graph and runtime integration #20072 now also fires for batched-only requests. A flagged request that still reaches a walk with nothing registered (only through PyExecutor directly) is left unprocessed with a one-time warning rather than failing the whole step.
BatchedLogitsProcessor.__call__ types stream_ptr as Optional[int]: it is the CUDA stream the logits live on, or None when they are not on a CUDA device (CPU unit tests). The API-stability reference is updated accordingly.
docs/source/features/sampling.md gains a short section on the batched processor; the SamplingParams and BatchedLogitsProcessor docstrings say when it is called and what it receives, and that it runs on every tensor-parallel rank of the last pipeline stage, each rank sampling from its own edits, so it must be deterministic and free of side effects.
Per-request processors run first and the batched one after them, so the batched processor sees their edits. Nothing changes for requests that do not set the flag, or when the LLM has no batched processor.
Test Coverage
tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/test_batched_logits_processor.py (new, CPU only): one call per step in scheduling order with views into the step's logits; per-request processors before the batched one; live beam rows and beam histories; a middle prefill chunk and a prompt shorter than its tokens are both skipped while the last chunk is handed over; ragged verification is refused; nothing is called without opted-in requests; a flagged request without a registered processor is skipped with a one-time warning; beam histories start for batched-only requests; the vocabulary-sharded gather runs for a batched-only request; the flag is refused without an LLM processor and with speculative decoding; the executor registers the processor and refuses an engine without the walk.
tests/unittest/_torch/sampler/test_in_graph_sampling.py: a request with the flag demotes the batch to the FULL tier.
tests/unittest/_torch/sampler/test_greedy_tokens.py: a request with the flag is not served by the forward's greedy token.
tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/test_request_utils.py: the flag is collected, broadcast and attached onto fresh request items like the other Python-only attributes, and copied to child requests.
tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/test_remote_tail_adp_phase.py: the l0_cpu constructor stub gains the batched_logits_processor field PyExecutor.__init__ reads.
tests/unittest/llmapi/test_llm_pytorch.py::test_tinyllama_batched_logits_processor (GPU): two prompts, one opted in; the opted-in one is forced to the biased token, the other is not.
There is no GPU here that builds main, so the CPU tests ran on one L4 with main's Python laid over the 1.4.0rc2.post1 wheel's compiled parts: test_batched_logits_processor.py, test_remote_tail_adp_phase.py, test_greedy_tokens.py, test_in_graph_sampling.py: 113 passed. test_request_utils.py needs main's C++ bindings and is left to CI, as is the TinyLlama test. An earlier revision of this branch, ported onto the release:1.4.0rc1 image, also passed TinyLlama-1.1B end to end (opted-in request forced to the biased token, a plain request untouched, a request with both its own processor and the flag ending up with the batched processor's token, the flag refused without a processor), beam search width 2 giving identical output through the batched and the per-request path, and test_beam_search.py + test_whisper_suppress_tokens_processor.py with no new failures. CI is the first GPU run of this exact code.

Dev Engineer Review
The PyTorch backend now supports batched_logits_processor for opted-in requests. The callback runs once per decoding step after per-request processors and receives logits views, token histories, request IDs, and client IDs. Request flags propagate through executor requests and pipeline broadcasts. Opted-in requests bypass in-graph sampling.
The implementation rejects DSpark ragged verification when either processor type is enabled. Gathered-logit edits do not affect sampled tokens in vocabulary-sharded spec-worker execution; verify that callers understand this limitation. stream_ptr is now optional to support non-CUDA logits. The current main GPU run was not reported, so verify the GPU CI result.
QA Engineer Review
Tests were added or modified across PyTorch executor, sampler, and LLM API tests. Coverage includes callback scheduling and ordering, request metadata and propagation, beam histories, sharded logits, ragged-verification rejection, missing-processor validation, and in-graph sampling bypass. The PyTorch TinyLlama test is not present in the inspected test-db/ or qa/ lists. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up; confirm the GPU CI run for the current code and whether the integration test should be listed.

Walkthrough
This change adds batched logits-processor registration and request opt-in for the PyTorch executor. The decoder invokes the callback once per step after per-request processors. Tests cover request propagation, decoding behavior, and generated outputs.
Changes
Batched logits processing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Define and register the processor tensorrt_llm/sampling_params.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/model_engine.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/py_executor.py, tensorrt_llm/llmapi/llm.py, docs/source/features/sampling.md, tests/unittest/api_stability/references/batched_logits_processor.yaml, tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/test_batched_logits_processor.py
The callback contract accepts an optional stream pointer. Model initialization registers the callback, and argument validation rejects opt-in when no callback is configured. The sampling guide documents invocation, inputs, and limitations.
The opt-in flag is added to executor requests, preserved through request conversion, child creation, and broadcast, and used to bypass in-graph sampling.
Apply batched processing during decoding tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/engine/runners/decoder/runner.py, tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/test_batched_logits_processor.py, tests/unittest/llmapi/test_llm.py, tests/unittest/llmapi/test_llm_pytorch.py
The decoder collects opted-in requests and passes their logits-row views and metadata to the callback after per-request processing. Tests cover scheduling, request filtering, beam histories, sharded logits, missing callbacks, and generated output.
The change is mergeable with a follow-up test for padded vocabulary columns in the batched callback.

Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the what and why. It states the problem: LLM(batched_logits_processor=...) and SamplingParams(apply_batched_logits_processor=True) are accepted on the PyTorch backend but have no effect. It details the solution across the runner, executor, request plumbing, validation, API typing, and docs. The Test Coverage section lists specific CPU and GPU tests and the test runs performed. The PR Checklist is present and ticked. The template's title format is an issue-level item, not part of the description body, so it is not evaluated here. Minor gaps: the description does not state the linked ticket or issue ID, and it does not clearly flag the API-stability and label requirements (for example whether api-compatible applies). These are non-critical. The author also discloses that the exact main GPU run has not been executed, which is useful context and not a gap.

Add coverage for the unsupported-engine construction error.
The GPU test already exercises real LLM(..., backend="pytorch", batched_logits_processor=...) construction and would fail if registration did not connect the processor. The CPU tests assign DecoderRunner.batched_logits_processor directly, so they do not cover construction.
Add a focused constructor test for the ValueError raised when the model engine lacks register_batched_logits_processor. Do not duplicate the already-covered successful registration path.

Assert that the original shard keeps its values after processing.
The test checks that the callback receives the gathered tensor and that the tensor has the expected shape. It does not check that the original shard is unchanged. The implementation documents that processors edit only the gathered copy, so a later change that wrote those edits back into shard would still pass this test.

Set a real vocabulary size in the sharded-logits test.
With vocab_size=None, the test's fake lm_head.num_embeddings is None, so the TP-padding trim is skipped. The callback receives the full gathered width of 32 columns. Removing the trim therefore leaves this test passing. Set vocab_size=8 and assert 8 columns. The test then fails if the trim is removed, because the callback would receive 32 columns.

Copy the batched-processor flag to child requests.
When executor_request_to_llm_request creates children, LlmRequest.create_child_request does not pass this flag. Each child therefore takes the new False default and skips the callback, even when its parent opted in. Pass py_apply_batched_logits_processor=self.py_apply_batched_logits_processor during child construction. Add a multi-sequence regression case in tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_request_utils.py.

Fixed in c31a404: create_child_request now passes the flag to each child, with a regression test in test_request_utils.py (test_child_factory_copies_the_batched_logits_processor_flag).
Rebased onto main (now at 92d0b59) to resolve the merge conflict. One change in behavior came out of it:
#20072 added a check in DecoderRunner._execute_logit_post_processors that raises when a generation request under DSpark ragged verification (py_verify_len set) has per-request logits post-processors, because the walk's fixed row stride would hand the processor another request's packed logits. The batched processor gets its rows from the same walk, so it has the same problem. The check now fires when a request has per-request processors, the batched-processor flag, or both, and the error message names both kinds. New test: test_ragged_verification_is_refused_for_batched_only_requests.
The other conflicts were mechanical: py_apply_batched_logits_processor added to the reworked attribute list in RequestBroadcaster._collect_py_objects, the registration kept alongside _kv_connector_config in PyExecutor.__init__, and register_batched_logits_processor rewritten in ruff style now that model_engine.py is out of legacy formatting. Because the PR touches that file, ruff-format also reformats three existing lines from #20072 that main had not yet formatted.
Add regression coverage for executor-request conversion.
Add a test in tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_request_utils.py that sets executor_request.py_apply_batched_logits_processor = True, converts the request, and asserts that the resulting LlmRequest retains True. Also assert the False default when the attribute is absent.

The "Check LLM API Compatibility Label" check fails on this PR because it changes tests/unittest/api_stability/references/batched_logits_processor.yaml. The only API change is that the stream_ptr annotation on BatchedLogitsProcessor.call now also accepts None (Optional[int]). Existing callers are unaffected, so it should be api-compatible. Could a maintainer add that label, or tell me if another label applies? The check re-runs when a label is added, so no new push is needed. The branch was also rebased onto main today and has no conflicts.

Runtime part: the n>1 child flag is fixed, but the l0_cpu PyExecutor constructor test stub still lacks batched_logits_processor, and the flag is still accepted under speculative decoding, where the walk hands over wrong rows or has no effect. Details inline, plus a rebase heads-up for greedy_tokens_usable.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This read is unconditional, but tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/test_remote_tail_adp_phase.py::test_constructor_initializes_remote_tail_adp_before_starting_worker (cpu_only, run by l0_cpu) builds the real PyExecutor with a SimpleNamespace llm_args. That stub has kv_connector_config=None (read four lines above) but no batched_logits_processor. As I read it, all four cases now fail with AttributeError. Could you add batched_logits_processor=None to that stub?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 2ea2c72: the stub gains batched_logits_processor=None. The registration also moved into a module-level _register_batched_logits_processor, with two CPU tests for it (registers with the engine; ValueError for an engine without the walk). All four constructor cases pass.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Could this also refuse the flag under speculative decoding? One-model workers (MTP, Eagle3, ...) sample inside the forward, so the batched edits never reach the tokens. With NGram, TorchSampler reads 1 + draft_len rows per generation request but the walk steps by py_beam_width. Running the head walk on CPU, the second request got the first request's draft row. Since the rebase, DSpark ragged verification raises inside the step and fails every request in the batch. one_model_sampling_rejection_reason would give one-model modes a 4xx up front.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Done in 2ea2c72: _check_arguments raises RequestError when the flag is set and speculative_config is not None, so the frontend answers 4xx before the stream opens. It covers both families (one-model and drafter-based), which is why it is not in one_model_sampling_rejection_reason. The docs paragraph now says the flag is refused there.
Note that per-request logits_processor has the same stride problem under the drafter-based modes on main; I left that out of this PR's scope.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
The check at L1011 does not catch a non-last prefill chunk. During chunked prefill get_tokens(0) is already the whole prompt, so py_orig_prompt_len == len(token_ids[0]), and the request is handed over with its chunk's last-position row, which the sampler drops. Running the head walk on CPU with such a request calls the batched processor for it. The TRT backend only passed isLastContextChunk() requests, and test_an_unfinished_context_chunk_is_not_handed_over passes only because it sets orig_prompt_len below the token count. Skip not request.is_last_context_chunk too?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 2ea2c72: the walk also skips not request.is_last_context_chunk. The test now covers both reasons (middle chunk; prompt shorter than the tokens) and checks that the last chunk's row still reaches the processor at its own offset. The per-request processors share the walk, so they get the fix too.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Heads-up for the runner.py conflict with #20306: main added greedy_tokens_usable in this file, the predicate for forwards that return greedy tokens instead of logits. It lists every logits reader, py_logits_post_processors included, but not this flag. After the rebase a greedy, batched-only request would take that path, and _execute_logit_post_processors returns early when logits is None, so the batched processor is skipped. No forward on main returns greedy tokens yet, so this is latent. Add the flag there too?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
On which ranks: the TRT path built this with replicate=False, so the batched processor ran once per step on TP rank 0 and the decoded tokens were broadcast. Here it runs on every TP rank of the last PP stage, and each rank samples from its own edits. A processor with side effects or nondeterminism then runs tp_size times per step and can make ranks sample different tokens. Worth a sentence here and in the docs?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Added in 2ea2c72 and dcd54d2 to the apply_batched_logits_processor docstring, BatchedLogitsProcessor.__call__ and the docs section: the processor runs on every TP rank of the last PP stage and each rank samples from its own edits, so it must be deterministic and side-effect free.
…ckend
LLM accepts batched_logits_processor and SamplingParams has
apply_batched_logits_processor, but nothing on the PyTorch backend read
either: the batched processor was never called, and the flag was dropped
when the executor request was built.
The engine's logits post-processor walk now collects the logits rows,
token ids, request ids and client ids of every scheduled request that
set the flag and hands them to the LLM's batched processor in one call
per step, after each request's own processors have run. The rows are
views into the step's logits tensor, viewed as [beam_width, 1, vocab]
like the per-request processors see them, so in-place edits land; under
beam search they are the live beams and their histories. The flag
travels with the request across pipeline stages like the per-request
processors do, keeps the request on the eager sampling tier, and is
refused at submission when the LLM has no batched processor.

flag was not among them, so the extra sequences of a request with n > 1
took the default and skipped the batched processor.

…oding; skip middle prefill chunks
Review follow-ups for the PyTorch batched logits processor:
- LLM.generate refuses apply_batched_logits_processor with speculative
decoding on the PyTorch backend (RequestError, so the OpenAI frontend
answers 4xx): one-model workers sample inside the forward, and the
drafter-based modes sample 1 + draft_len rows per request while the
post-processor walk steps by beam width.
- The walk skips a context request that is not its last chunk; the
prompt-length check alone cannot tell chunks apart.
- greedy_tokens_usable lists the flag, next to the per-request processors.
- PyExecutor's processor registration moves to a module-level function
with its own tests; the l0_cpu constructor stub gains the field it reads.
- Docs and docstrings say the processor runs on every TP rank of the last
PP stage on the PyTorch backend, so it must be deterministic and free
of side effects.

…he removed TRT backend
The legacy TensorRT backend is gone from main (c77bc6e), so the docstring,
docs and runner comments describe only where the processor runs now. The
child-request flag test keeps only the case that fails without the copy.

Rebased onto main (5d86481; the runner.py conflict with #20306 was add/add, both sides kept) and addressed the five threads in 2ea2c72, with a follow-up in dcd54d2 that drops the TensorRT-backend wording from the docs and comments since that backend is gone from main.
One judgment call worth stating: the missing-processor refusal stays a ValueError (matching the neighbouring return_routed_experts check), while the new speculative-decoding refusal is a RequestError so trtllm-serve answers 4xx.
CPU tests on an L4 with main's Python over the 1.4.0rc2.post1 compiled parts: test_batched_logits_processor.py, test_remote_tail_adp_phase.py, test_greedy_tokens.py, test_in_graph_sampling.py: 113 passed. test_request_utils.py needs main's C++ bindings and is left to CI.
The api-compatible label is still needed for the compatibility check (the only API change is stream_ptr: Optional[int]).
Thanks @JunyiXu-nv! Could you add the api-compatible label (the only API change is stream_ptr becoming Optional[int]) and start /bot run if that looks right? Nothing else is pending from the author side.

Description
LLM(batched_logits_processor=...)andSamplingParams(apply_batched_logits_processor=True)are both accepted on the PyTorch backend, but neither does anything there: nothing under_torch/pyexecutorreads the LLM field, and the request flag is dropped when the executor request is built. The batched processor was a feature of the removed TensorRT backend that was never wired into the PyTorch executor, and the docs still present it as available. This PR makes the PyTorch backend honor both, with the existing public API unchanged:
DecoderRunner._execute_logit_post_processorsalready walks the scheduled requests and hands each one's logits rows to its ownlogits_processor(s). It now also collects the rows, token ids, request ids and client ids of every request that setapply_batched_logits_processor, and hands them to the LLM's batched processor in one call per step, after the walk. Eachlogitsentry is the request's rows viewed as[beam_width, 1, vocab], the shape the per-request processors see, and a view into the step's logits tensor, so in-place edits land. Under beam search the rows are the live beams and the token ids are each beam's own history ([#19902][fix] Give logits processors each beam's hypothesis under beam search #20915). The row offsets and the vocabulary-sharded spec-worker gather are the ones the per-request path already uses. The walk now skips a context request that is not its last chunk (is_last_context_chunk):get_tokens(0)is already the whole prompt during chunked prefill, so the prompt-length check alone handed a middle chunk's row to the processors. That fix applies to the per-request processors too.PyExecutorregistersllm_args.batched_logits_processorwith the model engine, the same way the beam-history and in-graph sampling hooks are registered. The registration is a module-level function so the constructor path has its own tests; it raises at construction when the model engine has no post-processor walk to attach the processor to.BaseWorker, kept onLlmRequestaspy_apply_batched_logits_processor, copied to child requests (n > 1), and crosses pipeline stages with the other Python-only request attributes.greedy_tokens_usablelists the flag for the same reason.LLM.generaterefuses the flag when the LLM has no batched processor (ValueError, matching the neighbouringreturn_routed_expertscheck), and refuses it with speculative decoding (RequestError, sotrtllm-serveanswers 4xx before the stream opens): one-model workers sample inside the forward, so the processor's edits never reach the tokens, and the drafter-based modes sample1 + draft_lenrows per request while the walk steps by beam width, so it would hand the processor another request's rows. The executor-side DSpark ragged-verification check from [TRTLLM-14620][feat] Add DSpark ragged graph and runtime integration #20072 now also fires for batched-only requests. A flagged request that still reaches a walk with nothing registered (only throughPyExecutordirectly) is left unprocessed with a one-time warning rather than failing the whole step.BatchedLogitsProcessor.__call__typesstream_ptrasOptional[int]: it is the CUDA stream the logits live on, orNonewhen they are not on a CUDA device (CPU unit tests). The API-stability reference is updated accordingly.docs/source/features/sampling.mdgains a short section on the batched processor; theSamplingParamsandBatchedLogitsProcessordocstrings say when it is called and what it receives, and that it runs on every tensor-parallel rank of the last pipeline stage, each rank sampling from its own edits, so it must be deterministic and free of side effects.Per-request processors run first and the batched one after them, so the batched processor sees their edits. Nothing changes for requests that do not set the flag, or when the LLM has no batched processor.
Test Coverage
tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/test_batched_logits_processor.py(new, CPU only): one call per step in scheduling order with views into the step's logits; per-request processors before the batched one; live beam rows and beam histories; a middle prefill chunk and a prompt shorter than its tokens are both skipped while the last chunk is handed over; ragged verification is refused; nothing is called without opted-in requests; a flagged request without a registered processor is skipped with a one-time warning; beam histories start for batched-only requests; the vocabulary-sharded gather runs for a batched-only request; the flag is refused without an LLM processor and with speculative decoding; the executor registers the processor and refuses an engine without the walk.tests/unittest/_torch/sampler/test_in_graph_sampling.py: a request with the flag demotes the batch to the FULL tier.tests/unittest/_torch/sampler/test_greedy_tokens.py: a request with the flag is not served by the forward's greedy token.tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/test_request_utils.py: the flag is collected, broadcast and attached onto fresh request items like the other Python-only attributes, and copied to child requests.tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/test_remote_tail_adp_phase.py: the l0_cpu constructor stub gains thebatched_logits_processorfieldPyExecutor.__init__reads.tests/unittest/llmapi/test_llm_pytorch.py::test_tinyllama_batched_logits_processor(GPU): two prompts, one opted in; the opted-in one is forced to the biased token, the other is not. There is no GPU here that builds
main, so the CPU tests ran on one L4 withmain's Python laid over the1.4.0rc2.post1wheel's compiled parts:test_batched_logits_processor.py,test_remote_tail_adp_phase.py,test_greedy_tokens.py,test_in_graph_sampling.py: 113 passed.test_request_utils.pyneedsmain's C++ bindings and is left to CI, as is the TinyLlama test. An earlier revision of this branch, ported onto therelease:1.4.0rc1image, also passed TinyLlama-1.1B end to end (opted-in request forced to the biased token, a plain request untouched, a request with both its own processor and the flag ending up with the batched processor's token, the flag refused without a processor), beam search width 2 giving identical output through the batched and the per-request path, andtest_beam_search.py+test_whisper_suppress_tokens_processor.pywith no new failures. CI is the first GPU run of this exact code.PR Checklist

The PyTorch backend now supports
batched_logits_processorfor opted-in requests. Gathered-logit edits do not affect sampled tokens in vocabulary-sharded spec-worker execution; verify that callers understand this limitation.
stream_ptris now optional to support non-CUDA logits. The currentmainGPU run was not reported, so verify the GPU CI result.QA Engineer Review
Tests were added or modified across PyTorch executor, sampler, and LLM API tests. Coverage includes callback scheduling and ordering, request metadata and propagation, beam histories, sharded logits, ragged-verification rejection, missing-processor validation, and in-graph sampling bypass. The PyTorch TinyLlama test is not present in the inspected
test-db/orqa/lists. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up; confirm the GPU CI run for the current code and whether the integration test should be listed.Per-File QA Perspective
