Description

Summary

Kimi-K3 context servers can run DWDP (Distributed Weight Data Parallelism; see the DWDP tech blog, blog19) for their routed experts: each rank of a DWDP group stores a slice of the experts and prefetches the others from its peers before each MoE layer. Every other weight of the MoE decoder layers is still replicated on every rank. This PR adds dense DWDP: each rank keeps a 1/N row shard of those dense weights (attention, shared expert, latent projections and norm, router), and a layer's full weights are gathered from the peers two layers before it runs, into a few staging slots. The memory of the replicated copies goes to the KV cache, or to a larger max_num_tokens.

  • Opt-in, configured through dwdp_config (prototype). Set dwdp_config.enable_dense: true on the context servers. Three more new DwdpConfig fields choose the mode, the transfer and the gather kernel: enable_experts (default true), copy_mode and gather_kernel. Nothing else of dense DWDP is configurable, and no environment variable turns it on.
  • Two modes, chosen from enable_experts. LLM() and trtllm-serve check a launch's arguments when they build them, and each worker checks its host before the model is built:
    • attached to expert DWDP (dwdp_size > 1, tp_size == 1, the overlap scheduler off): dense DWDP uses the DWDP group and the expert DWDP copy stream;
    • standalone, dwdp_config: {enable_experts: false, enable_dense: true} on one attention-DP instance with tp_size > 1 (for example a DEP16 context server): dense DWDP uses the attention-DP group and a copy stream of its own.
  • Scope. Kimi-K3, the only model whose decoder layers declare dense roots. Eager context servers: no CUDA graphs, torch.compile, LoRA, speculative decoding or sleep. FABRIC peer handles. trtllm-serve refuses enable_dense on a generation server, HTTP or gRPC, and a disaggregated MPI launch refuses it on every rank.
  • Checked before it commits; fails together.
    • Setup compares every rank's layout and weights.
    • It gathers every layer and checks the bytes against the originals, before and after it repoints the module tensors. Only then does it drop the replicated copies.
    • Its last collective agrees on the outcome of the commit, so either every rank commits or every rank raises. There is no fallback to replicated weights.
    • During the forward, every dependency is a stream event: the host does not wait.

It builds on main's VMM-backed DWDP lifecycle (#18644), on the DWDP fabric gather and store rendezvous (#20576), and on the cross-step expert prefetch with configurable slots (#20941). It is rebased onto main f1e4d1d. That main includes #20359, so the DWDP managers travel in PyExecutorResources and are bound for the serving phase only, and #19646 (dynamic EPLB), whose retry-safe tail of the executor release, _release_execution_pools, now exits both DWDP managers. The PR also carries:

  • three fixes to the DWDP executor wiring on the path dense DWDP takes (commits 4-6); two of them also change expert DWDP without dense DWDP;
  • for expert DWDP (commit 8):
    • a balanced partition of the routed experts when dwdp_size does not divide the expert count;
    • a full expert table, and no token exchange, for the MoE layers DWDP does not manage;
    • a refusal of an MoE backend that does not support DWDP, before the model is built;
  • the gather kernel as an argument of every launch of trtllm::dwdp_fabric_gather, instead of an environment variable the launcher read once per process (commit 10). This is the PR's only C++ change;
  • the DWDP launch rules that depend only on the LLM arguments, checked when the arguments are built (commit 11): the dense DWDP gate's, and main's expert DWDP checks from the executor creator;
  • an opt-in bound on the graceful stop of trtllm-serve, through one prototype LLM API field (commit 1);
  • a fix to a generation-server crash with KV cache manager V2, attention DP and a separate draft KV cache, which this PR's end-to-end validation hit (commit 9).

Impact when the new settings are not set

Dense DWDP and the graceful-stop bound do nothing unless their fields are set: dwdp_config.enable_dense and serve_graceful_shutdown_timeout_s. The changes below apply without them. They affect expert DWDP and, for commit 9, generation servers.

  • Kimi-K3 with expert DWDP (commits 2 and 5). Every expert-DWDP context server of a Kimi-K3 model, for example main's DWDP perf-sanity configs, now runs dense setup's collective Bump onnx from 1.12.0 to 1.13.0 #1 at startup, even with enable_dense off. This is one allgather over the DWDP group, before the expert setup. The server also logs one INFO line, [DwdpManager] DWDP rank r of N: dense DWDP setup first .... With the collective, a group whose servers disagree on enable_dense fails at once. Models without dense roots make no dense collective.
  • Existing DwdpConfigs (commit 3).
    • DwdpConfig gains four fields: enable_experts (default true), enable_dense (default false), copy_mode and gather_kernel. The last two default to null, which keeps today's transfer and gather kernel selection.
    • Existing configs parse and behave as before.
    • The only new rejection of an existing config is contention_opt: true together with an explicit copy_mode other than batched. The new gather_kernel requires copy_mode: gather.
    • The serve schemas now mirror DwdpConfig's mode rules (commit 3) and partition rules (commit 8), so they reject only what DwdpConfig rejects.
  • Launch checks (commit 11).
    • Main's expert DWDP checks (dwdp_size > 1; pipeline and context parallel size 1; tensor parallel size 1 or attention DP; no CUDA graphs) and the dense DWDP gate's rules on the arguments now run when the LLM arguments are built, in LLM() and trtllm-serve, instead of on every worker after its ranks have started.
    • They refuse the same configs as before, the expert ones with main's messages.
    • The serve schemas mirror them on the values a YAML sets.
  • MoE backend (commit 8). Expert DWDP now refuses an MoE backend other than CUTEDSL or CUTEDSL_FC12 before the model is built. Such a launch failed before as well, later: DWDP managed no MoE layer, every rank loaded every expert, and the launch ran out of memory or failed in setup.
  • Gather environment variables (commit 3). TRTLLM_DWDP_PREFETCH_GATHER without copy_mode, and TRTLLM_DWDP_GATHER_KERNEL without gather_kernel while the gather runs, still work and now log one deprecation warning each. Main's six Kimi-K3 DWDP16 perf-sanity recipes now set copy_mode: gather and gather_kernel: tma instead.
  • Gather op (commit 10). trtllm::dwdp_fabric_gather gains use_tma, default False, so calls without it keep the register kernel. Each DWDP manager passes its kernel to every launch, so two DWDP instances in one process can run different kernels.
  • KV-cache estimation off (commit 4).
    • The executor serves from its construction, and it now gets the DwdpManager there.
    • It starts each forward through the manager, drops the expert prefetch after a control action and exits the manager at shutdown.
    • It now refuses expert DWDP with the overlap scheduler on, as the serving phase does with the estimation on.
    • Every DWDP manager, expert DWDP alone included, is now set up before the final KV cache is sized (commit 6), so the expert prefetch ring holds its memory before the KV cache takes its share.
  • Overlap-scheduler check: the check that expert DWDP runs without the overlap scheduler now runs in _initialize_execution, before anything is bound or warmed up (commit 3).
  • Prefetch ring and page pool (commit 5).
    • An expert prefetch ring (the page pool of the num_prefetch_slots slots) larger than the free memory raises PrefetchRingMemoryError before any page is allocated.
    • A failed page allocation releases each handle once.
  • Balanced partition (commit 8).
    • num_experts_per_worker and num_prefetch_experts at 0/0, their defaults, now mean the balanced partition. Before, that config failed while the model was built or in setup.
    • Setting only one of the two fields, or a negative value, is rejected when the config is parsed, and the serve schemas reject it too.
  • Expert setup protocol (commit 8).
    • Expert DWDP setup agrees on the partition in a handshake and ends with one vote.
    • A failure on one rank between the two therefore raises on every rank, instead of leaving the others blocked.
    • Explicit size/stride configs keep their ranges and bytes.
  • Activation pre-quant scales (commit 8).
    • The per-layer *_act_scale (AWQ) scales are compared across ranks, and rank 0's value is installed on every rank. They may differ by one unit in the last place only where a 16-bit parameter is cast from fp32 checkpoint values; a 16-bit checkpoint's must be bitwise equal; wider parameters agree within the loader's tolerance, which is now a pair of named constants the loader shares.
    • Other overlapping copies must still be bitwise equal.
  • Unmanaged MoE layers (commit 8).
    • DWDP manages only CuTeDSL NVFP4 MoE layers without locality domains.
    • Any other MoE layer, for example a BF16 MTP layer, now keeps its full expert table. The first such layer of each backend and reason logs a WARNING, and DWDP setup logs how many layers each reason covers.
    • No layer of a DWDP mapping (moe_tp_size = moe_ep_size = 1) exchanges tokens: _create_comm_strategy_auto returns no communication strategy for a layer DWDP does not manage either, and calculate_num_chunks counts only the rank's own tokens. Under attention DP, an AllGatherReduceScatter would otherwise sum dp_size identical results for such a layer.
    • On main, every MoE layer was shrunk to the rank's range, whether or not DWDP managed it.
  • Cleanup logging (commit 2).
    • pyexecutor/dwdp.py logs cleanup errors with logger.error and the traceback.
    • Main calls logger.exception, which the TensorRT-LLM logger does not have.
  • CI collection.
    • l0_cpu now collects two existing DWDP test files that lacked the cpu_only marker (commits 2 and 5).
    • l0_cpu also gains test_openai_server_graceful_shutdown.py (commit 1) and test_serve_context_only_settings.py (commit 2).
    • New GPU entries:
      • l0_b200: test_dense_attached_gpu.py and test_dwdp_moe_construction_gpu.py;
      • l0_gb300_multi_gpus: test_dense_attached_gpu.py;
      • l0_a10: the commit 9 test.
  • Serve role check (commit 2). A gRPC server checks the role its environment holds (TRTLLM_DISAGG_ROLE) as an HTTP server does, and the legacy values ctx0 and gen0 count as their roles.
  • Draft KV fix (commit 9). With KV cache manager V2, attention DP and a separate draft KV cache, rolling back the attention-DP dummy after a skipped iteration now also frees its draft KV mirror.

Why one PR

Most of the size is new code behind the setting: the tensorrt_llm/_torch/modules/dwdp/dense package (6.3k lines) and tests (7.6k of the 18.3k added lines). The commits are one feature plus what its validation needed:

  • Dense DWDP and its executor wiring (commits 2-7).
    • Commits 2 and 3 add dense DWDP.
    • Commit 7 makes the standalone gather's warning name the settings the gather involves.
    • Commits 10 and 11 follow the review: the gather kernel per launch, and the launch rules in TorchLlmArgs. Both change code that commits 2-8 add.
    • Commits 4-6 fix the executor wiring on the path dense DWDP takes:
      • without commit 5, an attached DWDP8 context server runs out of memory at startup;
      • without commit 6, the freed memory does not reach the KV cache when the KV-cache estimation is off;
      • commit 4 fixes the same creator code for expert DWDP, and commit 6's tests build on its harness.
  • Commit 8 (balanced partition).
    • It reworks the expert DWDP setup that DwdpManager.setup runs right after dense DWDP.
    • It builds on commit 5's changes to the same files: dwdp/setup.py, weight_buffer.py, page_pool.py, weight_manager.py and pyexecutor/dwdp.py. As a separate PR it would have to stack on this one.
    • Without it, the Kimi-K3 DWDP12 configuration of the dense DWDP validation stored 88 experts twice per MoE layer.
  • Commit 1 (the graceful-stop bound).
    • It was found while validating dense DWDP context-only serving: benchmark jobs hung at teardown, with request handlers waiting for responses that never came.
    • Its one field shares generated files with the new DwdpConfig fields: both serve schemas, the telemetry golden manifest and llm.yaml. As a separate PR it would conflict in all of these files and need a second approval round for the same files.
    • It is opt-in.
    • Earlier revisions also let the executor drop the requests still in flight at shutdown (drop_inflight_requests_on_shutdown). That moves to a separate PR: a dropped request must first get a final response, so that an LLM API caller does not wait forever.
  • Commit 9 (a generation-server crash on main).
    • This PR's end-to-end validation hit the crash. With KV cache manager V2, attention DP and a separate draft KV cache (DSpark), the attention-DP dummy's draft KV mirror outlived a skipped iteration, and the next update raised "History length cannot exceed capacity".
    • The fix is self-contained: 11 lines in _finalize_adp_dummy_allocation, plus its test.
    • It does not depend on the rest of the PR and applies to main by itself, so it can be backported on its own.

Each commit has a message that explains it and tests of its own, so the PR can be reviewed one commit at a time.

How dense DWDP works

  • What moves. For each MoE decoder layer l of Kimi-K3 (layers 1-92; layer 0 has a dense MLP and stays replicated), two blobs: the attention weights A(l) (KDA or MLA) and the MoE-dense weights D(l) (router, shared expert, latent projections and norm). Each decoder layer names its roots (dense_dwdp_roots) and two tables of attribute names: the plain tensor attributes under the roots that may move (such as the fused KDA projections and the weight-scale copies the FP8 block-scale linears keep for the low-M GEMM), and the names that never move (scratch tensors and the routing bias). The routed experts stay with expert DWDP, and storages under 1 MiB stay replicated.

  • Where it lives. Each blob is cut into N rows, one per rank of the group. A rank keeps its rows in a row store of CUDA VMM memory exported as FABRIC handles, and maps every peer's rows read-only.

  • When it is gathered. Each rank has a ring of 2 attention slots and a ring of 3 MoE-dense slots. Once a layer's attention or MoE block has closed its read window, the next layers whose slots are free are copied, in layer order, from every rank's row store, this rank's included, into this rank's slots on a copy stream: within a forward, the rows of layer l + 2 after the attention call of layer l. Attached, the gather goes on at the end of a forward into the first two layers of the next one, as main's expert prefetch schedule does with its last MoE layers, so a completed forward leaves the next one primed. Below, L(l) is this gather of layer l's dense weights and E(l) is expert DWDP's prefetch of layer l's remote experts. The module tensors are repointed into the slots once, at setup, so the model reads its weights through its usual attributes.

  • Ordering. Four hooks, in modeling_kimi_linear.py:

    Hook Where What
    H0 KimiLinearModel.forward entry after an aborted forward, a write-after-read barrier; the first two layers unless they are enqueued already (by the previous forward's end or the executor loop); attached, then the start of the expert prefetch
    H1 decoder layer entry compute waits for the layer's slots (read after write)
    H2 after the attention call close the attention read window; enqueue the next layers whose slots are free (L(l + 2) within a forward)
    H3 after the MoE block close the MoE-dense read window; the same fill

    All reads of A(l) happen between H1 and H2, and all reads of D(l) between H1 and H3. A copy into a slot waits for the end of the read window of the layer that held it. Every dependency is an event on a stream; between setup and teardown the host never synchronizes. Attached, the copies share the expert copy stream. With main's default of two expert prefetch slots it runs ... E(l+1), L(l+2), E(l+2), L(l+3) ... within a forward. At the Kimi-K3 forward boundary, the next forward's copies are E(1), L(1), E(2), L(2): layers 91 and 92 read the MoE-dense slots of layers 1 and 2 until H3. Those copies are read only after the gap between executor steps. With more expert prefetch slots, each expert copy is issued ahead of its layer's dense copy, and DwdpManager.setup logs that at INFO.

  • Setup runs once per context worker after the weights are loaded. It has phases P1-P6 over six fixed collectives: one after each of P1-P5, and one that agrees on the outcome of the commit. Every rank reaches the same verdict.

    • P1 collects the layout, its digest and per-blob checksums and compares them across ranks. This catches a rank with another enable_dense or other weights (a tensor-parallel shard, for example). P1 also checks that the free memory covers the store and the slots.
    • P2 allocates the store and the slots and writes this rank's rows. P3 maps the peers' rows and builds the copy plans.
    • P4 gathers every layer and checks the slot bytes against the originals. P5 repoints the module tensors and checks every layer again.
    • P6 drops the originals and scans for leaks. Its outcome goes to collective update aarch64 libraries to main branch #6. If any rank failed, every rank releases its dense state and raises. A leaked original is a warning and a count on the commit line (leaks=).

    A failure in P1-P5 on any rank makes every rank restore the original tensors and raise. Past P6 the originals are gone: a failure reported in collective update aarch64 libraries to main branch #6 releases the dense state on every rank, and the model has to be loaded again, in a new process. Dense DWDP never falls back to replicated weights.

  • Guards. ModelLoader's weight reload and incremental weight updates, and the Kimi load_weights methods, refuse a model whose dense weights dense DWDP has moved.

Modes and how to enable them

Dense group the DWDP group (MPI sub-communicator or the store rendezvous) the attention-DP (tp) group, as an MPI sub-communicator with its own tag
Owner DwdpManager creates a DenseDwdpManager, sets dense DWDP up before the expert setup and attaches it the executor creator creates a DenseDwdpManager before the model is built; it sets itself up
Copies the expert DWDP copy stream and transfer; copy_mode sets both the manager's own copy stream; copy_mode (default batched)
First layers of a forward gathered at the end of the previous forward, beside the expert prefetch. When they are not (the first forward, or after an aborted one), start_forward enqueues L(first), L(second) and starts the expert prefetch L(first), L(second) before every forward

Settings (all prototype), in dwdp_config:

Field Default Meaning
enable_dense false Dense DWDP. Context servers only, with the same value on every server of the group.
enable_experts true Expert DWDP. Set false together with enable_dense: true for standalone dense DWDP. The expert fields (dwdp_size, num_groups, num_experts_per_worker, num_prefetch_experts, contention_opt, num_prefetch_slots) must then keep their defaults.
copy_mode null per_slice, batched or gather, for every DWDP copy: the expert prefetch and the dense gathers. null keeps today's selection, and standalone dense DWDP then uses batched. contention_opt: true requires batched or null.
gather_kernel null With copy_mode: gather, the gather kernel of every DWDP copy: register or tma (SM90 or newer; a device without its requirements runs register, with a warning). null keeps TRTLLM_DWDP_GATHER_KERNEL, which is deprecated, and register when it is unset.

Earlier revisions of this PR used environment variables. No code reads them any more:

Earlier revisions Now
TRTLLM_DWDP_DENSE=1 with dwdp_config dwdp_config.enable_dense: true
TRTLLM_DWDP_DENSE=1 without dwdp_config dwdp_config: {enable_experts: false, enable_dense: true}
TRTLLM_DWDP_DENSE_COPY (standalone only) dwdp_config.copy_mode, which now also sets the expert prefetch transfer
TRTLLM_DWDP_DENSE_REQUIRED removed: a failed setup always raises on every rank
TRTLLM_DWDP_DENSE_SEGMENTS, TRTLLM_DWDP_DENSE_MIN_BYTES, TRTLLM_DWDP_DENSE_STORE_CHUNK_MB removed: always the attention and MoE-dense segments, 1 MiB, one store handle
TRTLLM_DWDP_DENSE_STRICT, TRTLLM_DWDP_DENSE_DEBUG removed: strict mode is internal to tests; the watchdog and the NaN fill are gone
TRTLLM_EXECUTOR_SHUTDOWN_DROP_INFLIGHT=1 not in this PR: dropping in-flight requests at shutdown moves to a separate PR
TRTLLM_SERVE_GRACEFUL_SHUTDOWN_TIMEOUT_S=N serve_graceful_shutdown_timeout_s: N

Set enable_dense on the context servers only, with the same value on every server of the group. Launch them with --server_role CONTEXT. Generation servers are unchanged.

Attached, one GPU per worker, DWDP group of 16. These are the parts of a context server's configuration that the launch checks read:

tensor_parallel_size: 1
disable_overlap_scheduler: true
cuda_graph_config: null
moe_config:
  backend: CUTEDSL
dwdp_config:
  dwdp_size: 16
  enable_dense: true
  copy_mode: gather
  gather_kernel: tma

copy_mode: gather and gather_kernel: tma replace TRTLLM_DWDP_PREFETCH_GATHER=1 TRTLLM_DWDP_GATHER_KERNEL=tma, which main's Kimi-K3 DWDP16 perf-sanity recipes set; commit 3 moves those recipes to the fields. Both variables still work and are reported as deprecated.

Standalone, one DEP16 context instance:

tensor_parallel_size: 16
moe_expert_parallel_size: 16
enable_attention_dp: true
cuda_graph_config: null
dwdp_config:
  enable_experts: false
  enable_dense: true
  copy_mode: gather
  gather_kernel: tma

Copy modes

  • copy_mode unset keeps today's selection:

    • The expert prefetch uses one copy per slice by default.
    • With dwdp_config.contention_opt, it uses one batched copy per layer.
    • With TRTLLM_DWDP_PREFETCH_GATHER=1, which is deprecated, it uses the SM fabric gather (trtllm::dwdp_fabric_gather).
    • Attached dense copies follow the expert prefetch. Standalone dense DWDP uses batched: one cudaMemcpyBatchAsync per layer on the copy engines.
  • An explicit copy_mode sets the transfer for every DWDP copy, expert prefetch and dense gathers alike. Attached, one transfer serves both on the shared copy stream.

    • per_slice: one copy per descriptor.
    • batched: one batched copy per layer.
    • gather: the SM fabric gather, which holds SMs next to the MoE all-to-all.

    If TRTLLM_DWDP_PREFETCH_GATHER asks for a different transfer, DwdpManager logs one warning. contention_opt: true requires batched or unset.

  • gather_kernel, with copy_mode: gather only, picks the gather kernel: register or tma. Each DWDP manager resolves it once and passes it to every launch of its gather (commit 10), so two DWDP instances in one process can run different kernels. Unset, TRTLLM_DWDP_GATHER_KERNEL still applies. TRTLLM_DWDP_PREFETCH_GATHER and TRTLLM_DWDP_GATHER_KERNEL keep working and are reported as deprecated; nothing writes them.

  • gather without the trtllm::dwdp_fabric_gather op is refused before the DWDP group is created, or by the gate in standalone mode.

  • A standalone gather launch logs one warning. It names the compute-side defaults that setup applies for the gather (each only if it is not already set), and dwdp_config.gather_kernel, which picks the kernel. The defaults are:

    • TRTLLM_CUTEDSL_DENSE_GEMM_SCHEDULER=clc_dynamic, so the persistent dense GEMM grids do not run a second wave on the SMs the gather holds;
    • TLLM_ROUTING_DISABLE_COOP_LAUNCH=1, because cooperative MoE routing would wait for those SMs.

    batched logs nothing.

Setup order and the fixes in commits 4-6

The executor creator now runs these steps, in this order:

  1. The launch checks. When the LLM arguments are built, TorchLlmArgs.validate_dwdp_launch refuses a launch that expert or dense DWDP cannot serve, naming the first requirement it breaks (commit 11). On each worker, before any DWDP manager and the model are built, the creator refuses an MoE backend without DWDP (commit 8), and the dense DWDP gate (dense/gate.py), when dwdp_config.enable_dense is set, checks the host (FABRIC handles; standalone, the MPI backend and the gather op) and picks the mode from enable_experts.
  2. The managers, before the model is built, because the decoder layers capture the dense manager when they are constructed. Either:
    • DwdpManager (expert DWDP), which creates and registers the attached DenseDwdpManager; or
    • a standalone DenseDwdpManager.
  3. The model load. ConfigurableMoE sizes each MoE layer that DWDP manages to its rank's expert range and registers it (commit 8).
  4. DWDP setup. DwdpManager.setup sets up dense DWDP and commits it first, so the replicated dense weights go back to the allocator. Then it runs the expert setup: transport, prefetch ring, weight manager and MoE backend fixup. The weight manager adopts dense DWDP's copy stream. Finally, DwdpManager.setup attaches the dense runtime.
    • KV-cache estimation on (the default). Setup runs before the estimation forward measures the memory, as before. The profiling phase holds no manager. For serving, rebind_resources binds both managers (PyExecutorResources.dwdp_manager and dense_dwdp_manager).
    • KV-cache estimation off. The executor serves from its construction and gets the managers there. Every DWDP manager is set up before build_managers sizes the final KV cache (commit 6).
  5. Binding and the forward loop.
    • _initialize_execution validates the managers before anything is bound or warmed up, then binds them. The validation is _validate_dwdp_managers, which also holds the check that expert DWDP runs without the overlap scheduler.
    • The executor starts each forward of the non-overlap loop through the managers: DwdpManager.start_forward, or the standalone manager's prefetch_first_layers. In the overlap loop (standalone only), H0 primes.
    • release_resources() exits a bound manager after the KV caches and detaches it. Shutdown exits a manager the executor still holds, once.
    • Both exits run in _release_execution_pools, the part of the release that main's [None][feat] Add DynamicEPLB kernels and runtime integration #19646 made retryable. The executor holds at most one of the two managers (an attached DenseDwdpManager belongs to the DwdpManager), and a release retried after a failure there exits the one still held.

The fixes:

  • Commit 4.
    • When the KV-cache estimation is off, the executor serves from its construction. This happens with TRTLLM_SKIP_KV_CACHE_ESTIMATION=1, context parallelism, VANILLA attention, an encoder-decoder model, or a model without a KV cache.
    • Before this fix, only the serving resources the creator rebinds after the estimation got the DwdpManager. With the estimation off there is no rebind, so the executor had no manager. As a result it:
      • never started its forwards through the manager: the first forward, and the first one after a forward that stopped inside the expert sequence, issued their first expert copies only when they bound them;
      • did not drop the expert prefetch after a control action (invalidate_prefetch), so the copies issued for the next forward kept the expert weights from before the action;
      • never tore DWDP down at shutdown.
    • It now gets the manager at construction.
  • Commit 5.
    • As commit 2 added it, DwdpManager.setup ran the expert setup first. So the expert prefetch ring (the page pool of the expert prefetch slots) was allocated while the replicated dense weights were still resident, and an attached DWDP8 context server (112 resident experts per rank) ran out of memory at startup on every rank.
    • Dense DWDP now commits first. The setup peak is the larger of the two phases instead of their sum, and the state after setup is unchanged.
    • For expert DWDP in general:
      • WeightBuffer.create checks the ring against the free memory before it allocates a page. If the ring does not fit, it raises PrefetchRingMemoryError, naming the sizes and the remedies, instead of failing in cuMemCreate partway through.
      • PagePool no longer releases its handles twice when a page allocation fails.
  • Commit 6.
    • With the estimation off, attached dense DWDP (commit 2) and expert DWDP were set up after the final KV cache was sized. So the memory dense DWDP frees never reached the KV cache.
    • Also, a KV cache sized with a high free_gpu_memory_fraction (0.9 by default) could leave too little memory for dense setup or for the expert prefetch ring, which then failed on every rank (PrefetchRingMemoryError; on main, in cuMemCreate).
    • Every DWDP manager is now set up before build_managers, as standalone dense DWDP already was.

Limitations

  • Kimi-K3 only. enable_dense on a model whose decoder layers do not provide dense_dwdp_roots is refused. Attached, the refusal comes after the expert setup; standalone, it comes before the dense group is built.
  • Eager context servers only. The LLM arguments are refused with cuda_graph_config, torch_compile_config, prefill CUDA graphs, sleep_config, lora_config, speculative_config, enable_locality_domains, or pipeline or context parallel size above 1; the gate refuses hosts without FABRIC handles.
  • Mode requirements.
    • Attached mode needs tp_size == 1 and the overlap scheduler off.
    • Standalone mode needs the MPI backend, and with copy_mode: gather, the gather op.
    • Expert DWDP on an attention-DP instance (enable_experts with tp_size > 1, as in main's aggregated DWDP tests) is neither mode. The LLM arguments are refused when enable_dense is set.
  • More than two expert prefetch slots, attached. With DwdpConfig.num_prefetch_slots > 2, each expert copy runs ahead of its layer's dense copy on the shared copy stream. The protocol tests cover 2 to 4 slots and the GPU test covers 2 and 3. The serving runs used the default, 2.
  • Context servers only.
    • trtllm-serve refuses enable_dense before the model loads on a generation server: one launched with --server_role GENERATION, an HTTP or gRPC server whose TRTLLM_DISAGG_ROLE says generation (legacy values such as gen0 included), or a generation server of a disaggregated MPI launch, which every rank refuses before the world is split.
    • On any other server without the context role, it can only warn.
    • Launch context servers with --server_role CONTEXT (a gRPC server, which takes no --server_role, with TRTLLM_DISAGG_ROLE=context). The LLM API alone does not check the role.
  • The same enable_dense on every server of a group.
    • Setup's first collective catches a difference, on every rank.
    • The exception is a server whose launch is refused. It fails before the group exists, and its peers wait until TRTLLM_DWDP_RENDEZVOUS_TIMEOUT_S (store rendezvous) or indefinitely (MPI). moe-perf-guide.md says so too.
    • The ranks of one standalone instance share one llm_args.
  • No reload or update. Weights cannot be reloaded or updated on a model that dense DWDP has sharded, even after its teardown.
  • No EPLB with expert DWDP. Expert DWDP runs each instance at expert-parallel size 1, and main's own checks refuse a load balancer there before serving starts: a standard load balancer cannot size its slots, and per-layer dynamic EPLB ([None][feat] Add DynamicEPLB kernels and runtime integration #19646) requires expert parallelism and selects a MoE backend that DWDP does not manage. There is no DWDP-specific message for this. A disaggregated deployment can still use DWDP on its context servers and EPLB on its generation servers.
  • MoE layers DWDP manages. Expert DWDP needs moe_config.backend: CUTEDSL (or CUTEDSL_FC12) and manages only the MoE layers on it with NVFP4 weights and no locality domains. Any other MoE layer keeps every expert on every rank; the first of each backend and reason logs a warning, and setup logs how many layers each reason covers. An example is DeepSeek's BF16 MTP layer on a DWDP context server. This costs memory, not correctness.
  • Expert DWDP failures (commit 8).
    • With the store rendezvous, a rank that dies, or fails before the handshake, leaves the others waiting in their next collective until it times out (TRTLLM_DWDP_RENDEZVOUS_TIMEOUT_S, 1800 s by default).
    • The MoE backend fixup after the vote is local, so a failure there raises on that rank only.
    • Ranks running different versions of this code in one DWDP group are not supported.

Balanced expert partition (commit 8)

Expert DWDP gives each rank one contiguous range of routed experts. The range is set by DwdpConfig.num_experts_per_worker (the size) and num_prefetch_experts (the stride).

  • Main requires (dwdp_size - 1) * stride + size == num_experts with 0 < stride <= size. So when dwdp_size does not divide the expert count, only overlapping ranges fit. Kimi-K3 (896 experts) on DWDP12 used 82/74 and stored 88 experts twice in every MoE layer.
  • Nothing in the VMM needs equal ranges: a handle is mapped whole, whatever its size.
  • The code assumed equal ranges in four places:
    • the range formula;
    • the MoE backends' row allocation;
    • every peer's handle size and view rows, which were taken from this rank's;
    • the fixup's rule for which small parameters to allgather.

ExpertPartition (dwdp/specs.py) is now the one table of every rank's [start, end). Every rank computes it from DwdpConfig, dwdp_size and the expert count N. It is the only source of a rank's range for DwdpManager, MoE._init_dwdp_expert_layout, setup_dwdp and the transport.

num_experts_per_worker, num_prefetch_experts Kind Rank r stores
0, 0 (the defaults) balanced with divmod(N, dwdp_size) == (base, rem): base + 1 experts on the ranks below rem, base on the others, as _compute_ep_partition splits EP ranks; needs N >= dwdp_size. Kimi-K3 on DWDP12: 8 x 75 + 4 x 74
size == stride, dwdp_size * size == N uniform [r * size, (r + 1) * size), unchanged
stride < size, (dwdp_size - 1) * stride + size == N redundant [r * stride, r * stride + size), unchanged; the lowest rank storing an expert serves it
size == stride, (dwdp_size - 1) * size < N < dwdp_size * size capped [r * size, min((r + 1) * size, N)): the last rank allocates only the experts left

Any other pair raises ValueError while the model is built, before any weight is created. DwdpConfig already rejects one field set alone, or a negative value, when the config is parsed, and the serve schemas reject them as well.

dwdp_config:
  dwdp_size: 12
  num_experts_per_worker: 0  # both 0: balanced
  num_prefetch_experts: 0

What else changes:

  • Which layers DWDP manages. ConfigurableMoE._decide_dwdp decides this once the layer's backend exists, before the backend sync and create_weights. A managed layer is a CuTeDSL NVFP4 layer without locality domains.

    • MoE._init_dwdp_expert_layout sizes each managed layer with exactly its rank's rows, and the layer is registered with the DwdpManager.
    • Any other MoE layer keeps all its experts and is recorded with the DwdpManager, whose setup logs the count per reason; the first of each backend and reason logs a warning at once, before its experts load.
    • MoE.__init__ no longer shrinks layers.
  • Transport. The transport allocates each rank's handle for that rank's range. It maps every peer's handle whole, with that peer's size and offset, and gives each peer view that peer's rows.

  • Setup from the handshake to the vote. setup_dwdp first collects from every rank, then decides the same way on every rank:

    • one handshake allgather, carrying every rank's range, the granularity, and the rows, shape and dtype of its expert chunks. The error names the ranks that differ;
    • a status in each Phase 1 handle allgather;
    • an allgather(status) in place of Phase 3's barrier;
    • the fixup's single collective, _exchange_expert_scalars, as the vote.

    A failure on one rank in that span raises on every rank after the same collective, instead of leaving the others blocked in the next one.

  • The exchange. It replaces the fixup's per-parameter allgathers (184 on Kimi-K3).

    • Overlapping copies and zero-dimensional per-layer scales must be bitwise equal on every rank.
    • Per-layer activation pre-quant scales (*_act_scale, such as an NVFP4 AWQ layer's fc31_act_scale) are different: each rank computes them from the first expert it loads. They are compared with rank 0's, and rank 0's value is installed on every rank: within one unit in the last place where a 16-bit parameter is cast from fp32 checkpoint values (the loader records the checkpoint dtype), bitwise for a 16-bit checkpoint, and within the loader's tolerance (PRE_QUANT_SCALE_RTOL, PRE_QUANT_SCALE_ATOL, shared with the loader) for wider parameters.
  • Removed, with nothing left reading them: _validate_partition_config, _allgather_e_score_correction_bias, _allgather_expert_scales, _get_first_spec, WeightBuffer.compute_peer_data_offset, compute_peer_ranges, DWDPTransport.get_peer_ranges, and DwdpManager.start_expert_id and end_expert_id.

Compatibility.

  • Explicit size/stride configs keep, byte for byte: the ranges, rows, handle sizes and offsets, peer views, ring pages, copy plans and fixup results. So the DeepSeek-V3-Lite DWDP accuracy configs and the Kimi-K3 perf-sanity configs (56/56) stay valid.
  • For them, only these change:
    • fewer collectives (15 instead of 19 per rank on a 3-layer model);
    • the log wording;
    • a config error is raised while the model is built instead of in setup;
    • initial_global_assignments before the fixup is range(N). Only a load balancer reads it, and expert DWDP runs without one (see Limitations).
  • No config field is added. Both fields become NonNegativeInt, which the golden manifest still records as int, so the manifest and the API references do not change.
  • Their descriptions change, and the serve schemas gain minimum: 0 for both.
  • Through an adaptation in scripts/generate_trtllm_serve_schemas.py, the serve schemas accept the two fields only both 0 (or absent) or both positive. So they reject one field set alone, or with the other at 0, as DwdpConfig does.

Graceful-stop bound (commit 1)

Context-only benchmark jobs can finish the benchmark and then hang at teardown: uvicorn waits for every request handler, and a handler can wait for a final response that never comes. One prototype LLM API field bounds that wait. Unset, nothing changes.

  • serve_graceful_shutdown_timeout_s: N (BaseLlmArgs, an integer > 0).
    • It is passed to uvicorn as timeout_graceful_shutdown, in every frontend process, by the LLM, multimodal-encoder and embedding servers of trtllm-serve.
    • Request handlers still running after N seconds are cancelled, and the lifespan shutdown, which stops the engine, still runs.
    • The disaggregated router and the coordinator keep uvicorn's default; the requests they forward have their own --request_timeout. VisualGen, which takes no LlmArgs, also keeps the default.

docs/source/features/disagg-serving.md, "Bounding the graceful stop of a server", describes it.

Earlier revisions of this PR also let the executor drop the requests still in flight at shutdown (drop_inflight_requests_on_shutdown). That moves to a separate PR: a dropped request must first get a final response, so that an LLM API caller does not wait forever.

Validation

Serving runs on Vera Rubin (SM107): Kimi-K3 NVFP4 in disaggregated serving, with context-only servers and a separate generation server.

  • Which code ran.

    • The first item ran this PR's code on main 0fd58c9, before the rebases onto 94b58a6 and f1e4d1d, configured only through dwdp_config and the shutdown fields. That code still had drop_inflight_requests_on_shutdown, which only changes the stop and has since moved to a separate PR, and it chose the gather kernel through TRTLLM_DWDP_GATHER_KERNEL=tma, which gather_kernel: tma now replaces.
    • The second item ran the same PR code on an earlier base, main cecf5f6. The rebases onto 3302a31, 0fd58c9, 94b58a6 and f1e4d1d changed none of this PR's runtime lines. The first placed the dense manager's exit in main's new _release_execution_pools and moved test paths and stand-ins. The second only placed main's new lines next to this PR's own: an LlmArgs field, an executor setting, a test-list entry, and the regenerated schemas and manifest. The third only placed a test-list entry of commit 9 next to one main added, and the fourth a test class of commit 1.
    • The other runs used earlier versions of this series. Those versions were configured through environment variables, and they had a per-layer slot-checksum watchdog and a strict mode that this version no longer exposes.
    • The runtime protocol those runs exercised (read windows, events, copy plans, repointing) is unchanged. Setup has since gained its sixth collective and lost its fallback.
    • Commits 10 and 11 came after these runs. The runs chose the gather kernel through TRTLLM_DWDP_GATHER_KERNEL=tma or gather_kernel: tma; with commit 10 the same choice reaches the kernel as an argument of each launch. A source build with commit 10 ran a register, a TMA and a register gather in one process on one Vera Rubin GPU, each copying every byte with the kernel it named, as the profiler recorded it.
  • KV cache and base.

    • The runs with an NVFP4 KV cache used an earlier base, before the port to main.
    • Main has no Kimi-K3 NVFP4 KV cache yet. On main, the series also ran end to end with an FP8 KV cache (the "On main" item).
  • The tests under Test Coverage ran on this head.

  • This PR on main 0fd58c9, end to end, configured through dwdp_config: both runs used an FP8 KV cache (64-token pages), a DEP16 generation server with DSpark, and the long-context workload at concurrency 623.

    • Attached: 16 one-GPU context workers with dwdp_config: {dwdp_size: 16, enable_dense: true, copy_mode: gather}, disable_overlap_scheduler: true, drop_inflight_requests_on_shutdown: true and serve_graceful_shutdown_timeout_s: 45, for 3600 s.
      • All 16 ranks committed dense DWDP with one layout digest and leaks=0.
      • 13,507 requests, none failed. There was no demand fetch, fence fallback or restart of the expert prefetch sequence.
      • At the stop, all 16 context workers cancelled their KV cache sends still in flight (489 in total) instead of waiting for them, and two dropped their in-flight requests (six in total) instead of draining them. Every server exited cleanly.
    • Standalone: one DEP16 context instance (tp16, attention DP, EP16) with dwdp_config: {enable_experts: false, enable_dense: true, copy_mode: gather} and serve_graceful_shutdown_timeout_s: 45, for 1800 s.
      • It ran the head before the review fixes, which do not change it: the shutdown fix applied only with drop_inflight_requests_on_shutdown, and the MoE fix only under a DWDP mapping (dwdp_size above 1).
      • The gate chose standalone on all 16 ranks. All 16 committed with leaks=0 and the attached run's layout digest, and each logged the one copy_mode: gather warning (commit 7).
      • 6,845 requests, none failed. There was no demand fetch, fence fallback or WAR barrier.
      • The stop did not finish cleanly: the context server's frontends logged attached frontend lost its engine, and the MPI shutdown of the 16 ranks then passed its 120 s limit. The results were complete.
  • This version, through the LLM API (previous base, main cecf5f6), on a reduced Kimi-K3 NVFP4 checkpoint (4 layers, 64 experts), configured only through dwdp_config:

    • Standalone dense DWDP over 4 ranks gives the same greedy first tokens and log-probabilities as a run without DWDP. This holds with copy_mode unset, gather and per_slice, and with the KV-cache estimation off.
    • Attached dense DWDP over 4 one-GPU instances commits the same layout digest on every rank, serves, and exits cleanly, with the estimation on and off.
    • The logs show the dense commit before the expert prefetch ring, and, when the estimation is off, before the final KV cache.
  • Attached, DWDP16 (16 one-GPU context workers, earlier version):

    • All ranks committed dense DWDP with one layout digest and no leaked storage.
    • Under serving load with that version's slot watchdog on, the watchdog made about 3.95 M checks with 0 mismatches.
    • There was no demand fetch, error or failed request.
  • GSM8K (1,319 questions, attached DWDP16, earlier version):

    • Dense DWDP off: 96.13% and 96.21%.
    • Dense DWDP on: 97.35%, and 96.13% with the watchdog on (138,736 watchdog checks, 0 mismatches).
    • Dense on and off differ in 38-50 answers, fewer than the 54 that differ between the two dense-off runs: no accuracy loss.
  • Standalone, one DEP16 instance (tp16, attention DP, EP16, earlier version):

    • The gate chose standalone on all 16 ranks, and the layout digest equals DWDP16's.
    • There were no leaks, fence fallbacks, WAR barriers or errors with batched or with gather.
    • A run with the KV-cache estimation off sized the KV cache once, after the dense commit, and released dense DWDP at shutdown (527,344 watchdog checks, 0 mismatches).
    • GSM8K: 96.74%.
  • Setup order (commit 5):

    • The attached DWDP8 context server that ran out of memory at startup now starts and serves without a failed request. DWDP16 serves as before.
    • Commits 4 and 6 matter only for expert DWDP with the KV-cache estimation off. They are covered by the CPU tests and by the LLM API runs above.
  • Balanced partition (commit 8), DWDP12 with attached dense DWDP, earlier version:

    • Every rank logs balanced, 8 x 75 + 4 x 74 of 896, and all 12 ranks committed dense DWDP with one layout digest.
    • GSM8K is 96.51%. Against the dense-off runs, it changes as many answers as those runs change among themselves.
    • End-to-end runs had no failed request.
  • Not covered: requests with a cached prefix.

    • GSM8K does not reach Kimi-K3's context path for requests with a cached prefix, so no accuracy run covers dense DWDP there.
    • An earlier version's watchdog serving run went through that path. Its watchdog shows that each layer's slots held the right bytes when the layer started.
    • That the path reads its weights only inside the read window rests on the code: it reads kv_b_proj inside self_attn.
  • On main, with an FP8 KV cache (64-token pages): one attached DWDP16 context server and a DEP16 generation server with DSpark, running the long-context workload at concurrency 623 for 3600 s.

Performance, qualitatively: attached, the freed memory pays off through a larger max_num_tokens; at the same max_num_tokens, the larger KV cache alone did not raise throughput. At the one standalone point measured, the larger KV cache did not raise throughput either (that instance was not short of KV cache).

Setup: Kimi-K3 NVFP4, NVFP4 KV cache (128 tokens per block), disaggregated serving, a long-context workload with about 95% realized prefix reuse, 3600 s per run, request rate and TTFT from aiperf. "Uncached prefill tokens/s/GPU" is prefill tokens/s/GPU x (1 - realized prefix reuse): the prompt tokens actually computed.

Attached, context-only. DWDP16 context server (16 one-GPU workers), one helix8 generation server, concurrency 128.

Comparison Result
Dense DWDP off, base vs this series, max_num_tokens 16384 12.73 vs 13.25 req/s; 6,495 vs 6,765 uncached prefill tokens/s/GPU; TTFT p50 11.1 vs 10.7 s: no regression
Dense DWDP on, max_num_tokens 16384 each rank moves 58.3 GB and frees 56.6 GB; KV cache 56.0 to 92.8-93.1 GiB per rank (+36.9 GiB = 0.70 x freed); 13.25 req/s, as with dense off
Best points, same period: dense on at max_num_tokens 32768 (fraction 0.70) vs dense off at 24576 (fraction 0.65) vs dense off at 16384 (fraction 0.70) 14.02 vs 13.67 vs 13.30 req/s (+2.6%, +5.4%); uncached prefill 7,150 vs 6,931 vs 6,702 tokens/s/GPU (+3.2%, +6.7%); TTFT p90 33.0 vs 34.2 vs 36.5 s (-3.6%, -9.6%); KV cache 84.8 vs 48.2 vs 56.1 GiB per rank; no failed request. Attached, end to end. One DWDP16 context server, a DEP16 generation server (batch 8, DSpark), concurrency 321; this point is generation-bound. Dense on at max_num_tokens 32768 vs dense off at 16384: total tokens/s per GPU +1.5%, TTFT p90 -15% (8.7 vs 10.3 s), p99 -17% (39.5 vs 47.6 s). Dense on at 16384: no difference from dense off. A DWDP12 context server with dense DWDP at max_num_tokens 32768 (82/74, 28 GPUs instead of 32), against the same dense-off arm: +10.4% total tokens/s per GPU, TTFT p90 +35%.

Setup order (commit 5). DWDP8 (112 experts per rank, max_num_tokens 16384). Before: the expert prefetch ring (two slots of 871-872 pages of 16 MiB, 27.2 GiB) met 16.09 GiB of free memory, and every rank ran out of memory at startup. After: dense DWDP commits first (58.30 GB moved, 7.29 GB store); 64.0 GiB are free before the expert setup and 38.1-38.3 GiB after its ring; the KV cache is 29.5 GiB per rank; concurrency 64 runs at 5.74 req/s with no failed request. DWDP16 at max_num_tokens 32768 after the change: 14.38 req/s (14.02-14.24 in three earlier runs), KV cache 84.5-84.8 GiB per rank (84.6-84.9 before), profiling peak 174.08 GiB (174.02 before).

Balanced partition (commit 8). DWDP12 context server with attached dense DWDP (max_num_tokens 32768, fraction 0.70), balanced 8 x 75 + 4 x 74 against 82/74 at the same settings: model weights 193.69 GiB (ranks 0-7) and 192.10 GiB (ranks 8-11) against 204.83 GiB; profiling peak 203.55-205.54 against 215.76-216.25 GiB (10.64-12.42 GiB lower per rank); KV cache 62.82-64.22 against 55.33-55.68 GiB (7.45-8.70 GiB more per rank). End to end at concurrency 383 against a dense-off DWDP16 context server (32 GPUs), two balanced dense DWDP12 arms (28 GPUs; max_num_tokens 32768 and 16384) give +11.1% / +10.6% output and +10.4% / +9.6% total tokens/s per GPU at 2.6-3.1% fewer requests/s, with TTFT p90 +27% / +34%: context requests queue behind long prefills on fewer context workers.

Test Coverage

Every file in the lists below carries pytest.mark.cpu_only, so the l0_cpu stage collects it, except the GPU tests named as such. That stage collects with -m cpu_only. It lists unittest/_torch/modules, unittest/_torch/moe and unittest/_torch/pyexecutor as directories, and the other files one by one.

Dense DWDP (tests/unittest/_torch/modules/dwdp/, new files):

  • test_dense_config.py:
    • a launch sets only whether dense DWDP is on (DenseConfig.from_dwdp_config), and the standalone transfer: copy_mode and gather_kernel;
    • the segments are canonical and start with attention, and invalid segment lists raise;
    • the sizes are non-negative.
  • test_dense_layout.py:
    • the collector and the blob layout on a Kimi-K3-like toy decoder: KDA and MLA layers, row views, aliases, pad rows, excluded scratch names, and the low-M GEMM's scale copy;
    • a storage shared across layers stays replicated;
    • a module whose weights are not yet transformed is refused.
  • test_dense_store.py: the FABRIC row store over a fake VMM, with one store handle and with several.
    • The release after a failure partway through the allocation or the import.
    • A handle that cuMemCreate refuses is named by its chunk, size and layers.
  • test_dense_protocol.py: the runtime protocol over a recording fake of the CUDA calls, beside the real DWDPWeightManager and main's prefetch schedule. It is driven like the executor loop, the model and ConfigurableMoE, through the real attached DenseDwdpManager, and every dense and expert read is checked with vector clocks. Covered:
    • the fill at H2 and H3, into the next forward included, for both segment sets;
    • the copy order (a cold start, within a forward, at the Kimi-K3 forward boundary), with two sensitivity checks;
    • 1 to 5 and 92 layers with 2, 3 and 4 expert slots: race-free, with no fence, demand fetch or host synchronization, and primed after every forward;
    • a forward aborted before H1, before H2, between the expert bind and finish, and before H3, at the first, second, middle and last two layers. Each is recovered with and without the executor's start;
    • invalidate_prefetch;
    • a prefetch into a slot whose read window is still open takes the fence;
    • 200 random sequences of aborts, failed starts and invalidations;
    • standalone keeps one schedule per forward (L(1), L(2) at the start, L(l+2) at H2, nothing at H3) and recovers from an abort at H1, H2 or H3.
  • test_dense_attached_gpu.py (GPU, registered in l0_b200 and l0_gb300_multi_gpus): the real runtime and weight manager on one copy stream, with a read kernel in every read window that checks every read's bytes. Covered:
    • 4 and 5 layers with 2 and 3 expert slots;
    • slow reads or slow copies;
    • both segment sets;
    • a warmup forward;
    • every abort point, with its recovery and new expert weights;
    • 92 layers at the Kimi-K3 boundary;
    • a release with the next forward's copies in flight;
    • a missing consume record at H2 is detected.
  • test_dense_setup.py: setup on N rank threads over fake devices.
    • Ranks that disagree on enable_dense all raise at the first collective.
    • Ranks that disagree on the layout or the weights, and a failure on one rank in any of the phases P1-P5, abandon on every rank and restore every module tensor.
    • A failed commit on one rank, or a leaked original in strict mode, makes every rank raise after collective update aarch64 libraries to main branch #6. Without strict mode, a leak is committed and counted.
    • Only attached setup gathers into the next forward.
  • test_dense_gate.py: the host checks.
    • Without FABRIC handles, both modes are refused; standalone, without MPI, too.
    • copy_mode:
      • standalone, a gather without its op is refused;
      • an attached gather is left to DwdpManager;
      • a standalone gather launch logs one warning. The warning names dwdp_config.gather_kernel and every variable apply_compute_side_defaults sets, with its value;
    • the creator runs the gate for enable_dense only.
  • test_dense_executor.py:
    • who primes the forward;
    • a standalone manager with either executor loop;
    • expert DWDP still refusing the overlap scheduler;
    • shutdown exiting the manager it holds once, after the KV caches;
    • the tagged standalone MPI group;
    • the SM reserve:
      • the standalone gather's reserve, from registration to exit;
      • none for the copy engines or for an attached manager;
      • a pinned TRTLLM_CUTEDSL_SM_RESERVE with every transfer;
    • the standalone transfer carrying the kernel gather_kernel picks (the deprecated variable while it is unset), with the environment unchanged;
    • a model without dense roots refused before the standalone group is built.
  • test_dense_kimi_hooks.py: on a real Kimi-K3 model of a tiny config with KDA and MLA layers, with and without dense DWDP:
    • the hook placement (H0-H3);
    • the model and each decoder layer capture the registered dense manager when they are built (or None);
    • the load_weights guard;
    • the dense layout of the model's real layers. In strict mode with a 1-byte threshold, the collector moves exactly the tensors under the attention root and the five MoE-dense roots of each MoE layer, and nothing of layer 0.
  • test_dense_guards.py: ModelLoader.reload and ModelLoader.begin_update_weights refuse a model that dense DWDP has sharded, before they change anything. This holds with the mark on the model or on its decoder, for a causal LM and for a VL-style wrapper.

Executor wiring and setup order (commits 3-6):

  • test_dwdp_creator.py: _create_py_executor_impl runs to its end over stand-ins for expert-only, attached and standalone DWDP, with the KV-cache estimation on and off, and for a model without a KV cache.
    • The manager is set up once.
    • With the estimation off (or no KV cache), the only executor gets the managers at construction and starts its forwards through them.
    • With the estimation on, the executor is built without the managers, and the serving resources it is rebound to carry them.
    • Without the estimation, every DWDP setup (expert-only, attached and standalone) comes before build_managers.
    • Expert DWDP with an MoE backend other than CUTEDSL or CUTEDSL_FC12 is refused before the model is built.
    • With copy_mode: gather, the real standalone manager's SM reserve is in place when the model is built.
    • When construction fails, a standalone dense manager registered during construction is exited, and one registered before it is left alone.
  • test_dwdp_manager.py:
    • dense setup runs on the attached transfer before the expert setup;
    • the expert setup is handed the copy stream, the slot storages and the slot count;
    • a weight manager on another copy stream, or with other transfer flags, is refused;
    • the rollback when the expert setup fails;
    • on a model without dense roots, no dense collective runs and enable_dense is refused;
    • the INFO line for more than two expert slots;
    • copy_mode reaching setup_dwdp and sizing the SM reserve, the TRTLLM_DWDP_PREFETCH_GATHER override and deprecation warnings, gather_kernel resolved once and passed to the expert setup, a weight manager with another kernel than the dense transfer refused, and a gather without its op refused before the group is created;
    • a golden trace of the attached lifecycle, the executor's start, H0 and the recovery after an aborted forward.
  • test_dwdp_prefetch_pipeline.py, test_dwdp_setup_lifecycle.py:
    • copy_mode picks the prefetch transfer, whatever TRTLLM_DWDP_PREFETCH_GATHER says;
    • the adopted copy stream is used, and one on another device is refused;
    • an expert weight inside a dense slot is refused;
    • a ring larger than the free memory is refused before any allocation, with two and with three slots;
    • a page pool whose allocation fails releases each handle once.
  • test_dwdp_creator.py and test_dwdp_setup_lifecycle.py get the cpu_only marker (main [None][perf] Kimi-K3 KDA prefill grid sizing and MTP-verify kernels; DWDP cross-step expert prefetch with configurable slots #20941 added it to test_dwdp_prefetch_pipeline.py). Without it, l0_cpu skipped these files, main's own tests in them included.
  • test_executor_resource_rebind.py (main's):
    • the rebind binds dense_dwdp_manager like the other resources;
    • release_resources() exits a bound DWDP manager of either kind after the KV caches and detaches it, so the final shutdown does not exit it again.
  • These files set dense_dwdp_manager where they build a PyExecutor without __init__: test_kv_connector_executor_lifetime.py, test_pp_mpi_progress_thread.py, test_py_executor.py, tests/unittest/_torch/test_connector_adp.py, tests/unittest/executor/test_forward_error_survival.py, and tests/unittest/_torch/moe/test_dynamic_eplb_contracts.py ([None][feat] Add DynamicEPLB kernels and runtime integration #19646), whose shutdown-retry test copies the executor's release methods onto a stand-in.
  • test_fabric_gather.py: resident_sms with the caller's transport choice; use_tma: the configured kernel over the environment, the environment alone reported as deprecated, and the environment never written.
  • test_dwdp_prefetch_gpu.py (GPU): on one GPU, register, tma and register launches in one process each copy every byte and run the kernel they name; the peer-GPU expert gather runs with both kernels.

Configuration (commits 1-3, 8):

  • tests/unittest/llmapi/test_llm_args.py:
    • the DwdpConfig combinations: the defaults, the accepted ones, nothing to distribute, expert fields without expert DWDP, contention_opt with another copy_mode, an unknown copy_mode, gather_kernel without the gather, and an unknown gather_kernel;
    • the graceful-stop timeout: its default, and a timeout of 0 or -1 rejected;
    • TestDwdpLaunch: every rule of validate_dwdp_launch, for expert DWDP and both dense modes, and that building the arguments runs it.
  • tests/unittest/llmapi/test_trtllm_serve_config_schemas.py:
    • the five new fields in both serve schemas: a timeout of 0, a fractional timeout and an unknown gather_kernel are rejected;
    • test_dwdp_modes_match_runtime checks 25 combinations against DwdpConfig and both schemas. The disaggregated schema is checked at the top level and under context_servers and generation_servers;
    • the partition: 0/0 accepted and negative values rejected. test_dwdp_expert_partition_matches_runtime checks eight cases against DwdpConfig and both schemas: both fields absent, 0/0, 1/1 and 2/1 pass, and one field at 1 with the other absent or 0 fails;
    • the launch rules: test_dwdp_launch_rules_match_runtime checks 16 launches against TorchLlmArgs and both schemas, at the top level and in each disaggregated server block, and a launch that leaves the constrained fields unset passes the schemas and is left to runtime validation.
  • tests/unittest/api_stability/references/llm.yaml: the new LLM API field.

Balanced expert partition and unmanaged MoE layers (commit 8):

  • test_dwdp_peer_ranges.py:
    • the balanced table equals _compute_ep_partition;
    • on a grid of 60,836 configs, a strided table is accepted exactly when main's validator accepted it, or when it is capped.
  • test_dwdp_manager.py, test_prefetch_copy_plan.py:
    • DwdpConfig validation;
    • 0/0 resolved per expert count;
    • backend rows: 74 on a balanced rank, 71 on the capped last rank, 82 on a redundant one;
    • copy plans with peers of 75/74, 45/44 and 38/37 experts;
    • under a DWDP mapping with attention DP and ALLGATHER forced, no layer, managed or not, gets a communication strategy, and both chunk only the rank's own tokens;
    • ConfigurableMoE._decide_dwdp on stand-ins. An eligible layer is sized to its range and registered. A layer whose backend does not support DWDP, uses locality domains or is not NVFP4 keeps all its experts and is recorded with the manager instead, with one warning per backend and reason.
  • test_dwdp_moe_construction_gpu.py (new; GPU, registered in l0_b200): create_moe builds real ConfigurableMoE layers while a real DwdpManager is entered, on each rank of a balanced DWDP group of 4 over 10 experts.
    • The NVFP4 CuTeDSL layer stores its rank's range: in the wrapper's and the backend's layout, and in the rows of every expert weight and scale. It is registered.
    • A BF16 layer of the same model keeps all 10 experts, is recorded with the manager instead of registered, and logs one warning.
    • A decision made after the backend sync or after create_weights fails the test.
    • The GPU is needed only to resolve the backend.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/moe/test_dwdp_fixup_moe_backends.py:
    • the fixup over the exchange, also with a backend set up by the real NVFP4CuteDslFusedMoEMethod.setup_quant_scales;
    • reports that do not fit raise the same error on every rank;
    • AWQ-shaped layers:
      • an fp32 checkpoint's fc31_act_scale one ULP off rank 0's ends with rank 0's bytes on every rank;
      • two ULPs apart raises on every rank;
      • with a bf16 or fp16 checkpoint, or without the recorded dtype, one ULP apart raises;
      • fc31_input_scale one ULP apart still raises.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/moe/test_moe_backend.py: the NVFP4 loader records fc31_act_scale's checkpoint dtype.
  • test_dwdp_setup_protocol.py (new): the real setup_dwdp, one thread per rank, over StoreDwdpGroup on a HashStore, with a fake VMM that maps handles only whole.
    • Every peer is mapped with its own size and rows, for all four kinds.
    • A failure on one rank raises on every rank after the same collective, and nothing leaks. Covered failures: a handshake mismatch, an export, an access grant, the ring.

Graceful-stop bound (commit 1) and the serve role check (commit 2):

  • tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_openai_server_graceful_shutdown.py (added to l0_cpu.yml):
    • the uvicorn keywords with and without a timeout;
    • a timeout that is not positive is rejected by OpenAIServer;
    • the LLM, multimodal-encoder and embedding launchers each pass the LLM's value, unset and set;
    • an interrupted child server whose hung handler is cancelled at the bound, after which the lifespan shutdown still runs.
  • tests/unittest/llmapi/test_serve_context_only_settings.py (new in commit 2, l0_cpu.yml):
    • dwdp_config.enable_dense is refused on a generation server before the LLM is built. The role may come from --server_role, from the environment the server inherited, or from a disaggregated MPI worker's server type.
    • Without the context role, dense DWDP is warned about once, and an attached frontend does not repeat the warning.
    • ctx0 and gen0, in any letter case, count as their roles.
    • A disaggregated MPI launch is refused on every rank before it picks a device, with enable_dense under generation_servers or at the top level.
    • A gRPC server of either protocol checks the role its environment holds.
    • Every test leaves TRTLLM_DISAGG_ROLE as it found it.

Generation-server fix (commit 9):

  • tests/unittest/_torch/pyexecutor/kv_cache/test_kv_cache_v2_adp_dummy_draft_rollback.py:
    • CPU, with stand-in managers: a rolled-back dummy releases its draft mirror, and a queued dummy keeps it.
    • GPU, registered in l0_a10: with real V2 target and draft pools and the V2 scheduler, a skipped iteration followed by the deferred previous batch no longer raises.

CI.

  • The GPU tests registered in CI are test_dense_attached_gpu.py, test_dwdp_moe_construction_gpu.py and the commit 9 GPU case.
  • The DWDP accuracy tests on DeepSeek-V3-Lite (uniform, redundant and contention_opt configs, pre-merge in l0_gb200_multi_gpus) run expert DWDP through this PR's setup changes. They were not run locally.
  • The end-to-end validation above is not part of CI.

Results.

  • This head, on main f1e4d1d, on 4 Vera Rubin (SM107) GPUs per node.
  • The C++ libraries are a source build of this head's C++: main f1e4d1d's, with commit 10's change.
  • Each suite below also ran on main f1e4d1d alone, and the results were compared test by test. No test fails on this head that does not also fail on that main.
Suite Result
CPU (-m cpu_only): the dwdp directory, the dwdp fixup test, the graceful-shutdown and serve-schema tests, the executor tests above, the MLA cache-reuse creator test, the commit 9 test, and main's resource-rebind, KV-cache-estimation and GPU-keepalive tests 1,414 passed, 2 skipped without a GPU; 1,415 passed, 1 skipped with one GPU; 0 failed
tests/unittest/_torch/modules/dwdp and test_dwdp_fixup_moe_backends.py, 4 GPUs 667 passed, 1 skipped on the head, including the 4 cases of test_dwdp_moe_construction_gpu.py; 0 failed at every commit
test_executor_resource_rebind.py, test_kv_cache_estimation.py, test_gpu_keepalive.py, test_py_executor_creator_mla_cache_reuse_sync.py, test_dwdp_creator.py, 1 GPU 192 passed
test_kv_cache_v2_adp_dummy_draft_rollback.py (commit 9), 1 GPU 4 passed
api_stability, test_llm_args.py, test_trtllm_serve_config_schemas.py, test_serve_num_frontends_default.py, CPU 861 passed, 1 skipped, 6 failed. The same 6 fail on main f1e4d1d here: TestTorchLlmArgs::test_runtime_sizes, ::test_model_kwargs_with_num_hidden_layers, and 4 TestPyTorchBackendModelDefaults tests
Kimi-K3 modeling (test_kimi_linear_modeling.py, test_kimi_k3_checkpoint.py, test_kimi_k3_mla.py, test_modeling_kimi_k25.py), 1 GPU 70 passed, 15 skipped (no checkpoint here)
test_kimi_k3_helix_a2a.py, test_kimi_linear_helix_mappings.py 22 passed
test_connector_adp.py, test_serve_multi_frontend_helpers.py, test_serve_multi_frontend_route_gate.py, CPU 108 passed, 43 failed: all 43 in test_connector_adp.py, identical on main f1e4d1d. Main waives this file in CI (waives.txt): its PyExecutor stand-ins predate #20702 and later executor changes, and lack attributes the executor loop now reads, such as gather_all_responses
Broader directories, as l0_cpu selects them (-m cpu_only): _torch/pyexecutor, _torch/moe, _torch/modules/dwdp, executor, _torch/disaggregation with disaggregated, llmapi, usage and api_stability pyexecutor 3,966 passed, 5 failed; moe 721 passed, 2 failed; dwdp 607 passed, 2 skipped; executor 405 passed, 5 skipped; disaggregation 2,929 passed, 5 failed; llmapi 5,370 passed, 150 failed, 7 errors; usage and api_stability 470 passed, 1 failed. The failing tests are the same as on main f1e4d1d here, test for test. Most need srun or MPI, or models, services or source files this environment lacks, or read examples/, which this environment has at 0fd58c9
Each commit's own test files plus main's executor, EPLB and DWDP tests (-m cpu_only), on that commit's code only the failures main has here: the 43 test_connector_adp.py failures above, 2 test_hang_detector_kill.py tests that need srun, 2 test_dynamic_eplb_contracts.py tests that read C++ sources this environment lacks, and test_model_kwargs_with_num_hidden_layers
generate_trtllm_serve_schemas.py --check and generate_llm_args_golden_manifest.py --check, at every commit pass
pre-commit, every changed file and every commit pass

On the previous base (main cecf5f6) only:

  • test_cute_dsl_moe.py -k locality_domain_disables_dwdp (1 GPU): 1 passed.
  • The B200 path of test_dwdp_moe_construction_gpu.py in l0_b200, where the BF16 layer resolves to the CUTLASS backend, was checked with the device reported as SM100: 4 passed.

API changes

  • Label: api-compatible. Five new prototype fields. No existing field changes its default or its meaning for a config that parsed before.
    • BaseLlmArgs.serve_graceful_shutdown_timeout_s (positive int, default None)
    • DwdpConfig.enable_dense (bool, default false), DwdpConfig.enable_experts (bool, default true), DwdpConfig.copy_mode (per_slice / batched / gather, default None), DwdpConfig.gather_kernel (register / tma, default None, requires copy_mode: gather)
  • Partition fields.
    • DwdpConfig.num_experts_per_worker and num_prefetch_experts become NonNegativeInt.
    • 0/0, which was rejected before, now means the balanced partition.
    • The golden manifest still records them as int.
  • Generated files.
    • Both serve schemas are regenerated, with the new DwdpConfig rules and the DWDP launch rules mirrored by the generator.
    • The telemetry golden manifest has five new rows, which need telemetry/privacy code-owner approval.
    • tests/unittest/api_stability/references/llm.yaml has one new entry, which needs API-owner review.
  • C++ op. trtllm::dwdp_fabric_gather gains bool use_tma=False; calls without it keep the register kernel.
  • Validation. TorchLlmArgs.validate_dwdp_launch refuses, when the arguments are built, the configs that the executor creator and the dense DWDP gate refused on the workers.
  • Signatures.
    • Every function this PR adds is annotated.
    • So is every parameter it adds to one of main's functions.
    • Main's functions whose bodies it edits otherwise keep their existing signatures. Examples: create_py_executor_resources, _create_py_executor and KimiLinearModel.forward.

Assert an upper bound on shutdown time.

If a one-second timeout takes 30 seconds to cancel the handler, this test still passes: it checks only lifespan_shutdown_after >= _BOUND_S. Add a generous upper bound, measured from SIGINT, so the test detects a lost or ineffective timeout without depending on exact scheduling. As per path instructions, flag “Missing, incorrect, overly weak, or non-observable assertions.”

1437-1445: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add standalone dense-DWDP rollback coverage.

create_py_executor exits a newly registered dense manager when construction fails. The existing rollback test covers only the expert DwdpManager; the parameterized standalone test covers successful construction, not this error path.

Add a case in tests/unittest/_torch/modules/dwdp/test_dwdp_creator.py using set_global_dense_dwdp_manager that verifies:

  • A manager registered during construction receives __exit__(None, None, None).
  • A pre-existing manager is not exited.
  • A failing __exit__ is logged while the original construction error propagates.

A leaked global manager can cause a later dense-DWDP launch to fail during manager registration.

Add standalone dense-DWDP rollback coverage for create_py_executor in the DWDP
creator tests: verify a manager registered during construction receives
__exit__(None, None, None), a pre-existing manager is left untouched, and an
exception from rollback is logged while the original construction error
propagates.

Re-review of head 73189c0 (rebased onto 94b58a6), compared with 0d53826, the head I approved earlier. 3 blocking, 2 possibly blocking and 9 required items from my side: 12 inline below, 2 PR-level ones here, followed by the status of each Blocker / Possibly blocking / Required point from my earlier review. I reviewed by reading the code; nothing was run on GPU. The dense runtime protocol (read windows, events, slot reuse, abort recovery) still holds up, and the rework resolves 15 of my 17 earlier points.

CI: no pipeline has run on this head. #67458 (on 479a9a9, the 10-31 rebase) passed every CPU and single-GPU stage, including the new GPU tests (test_dense_attached_gpu.py 20/20 on B200, test_dwdp_moe_construction_gpu.py 4/4, the commit 9 case on A10/B300/H100); its only failed stages were the two multi-GPU stages blocked by the missing ci: full pre-merge approved label, and PR_Github reported FAILURE because artifact publishing got HTTP 500. So the six GB200 DWDP accuracy cases in l0_gb200_multi_gpus (DeepSeek-V3-Lite: uniform, redundant 40/32, contention_opt, aggregated attention DP), the only CI tests that run the rewritten expert DWDP setup end to end, have still not run on any version of this PR. Please get them green on this head before merge.

  • [Required] One concern per PR (still applies from my earlier review). Commit 9 (py_executor.py:4659-4669, the KV cache V2 + attention DP + separate draft KV crash fix, which the description says applies to main by itself) and commit 1 (serve_graceful_shutdown_timeout_s, which applies to every trtllm-serve LLM, embedding and multimodal-encoder server) are independent of dense DWDP, and they ship under a [None][feat] Dense DWDP title with no NVBug/JIRA. AGENTS.md: "One concern per PR — avoid scope creep. If a PR touches unrelated areas, split it."; CONTRIBUTING.md asks for a single concern per PR and the ticket in the title. The "Why one PR" reason, conflicts in the generated schemas, manifest and llm.yaml, is a routine rebase. Merged as is, the crash fix can only be tracked, reverted or cherry-picked as part of a 17k-line feature commit. Could commit 9 go to its own [https://nvbugs/<id>][fix] PR and commit 1 to its own PR (or to the drop-in-flight PR it was split from), linked from here?
  • [Required] PR description vs code. (1) "A failure in any phase on any rank makes every rank restore the original tensors and raise" does not hold past the commit point: once P6 has dropped the originals, a failure reported in collective #6 releases the dense state on every rank and the model must be loaded again (dense/setup.py:461-464, 722-728; repoint.py:342). Please say that P1-P5 failures restore the tensors and a P6/#6 failure needs a new process, so nobody builds a retry or a fallback on the stronger claim. (2) The Summary and the Settings table list three DwdpConfig fields and say "Nothing else of dense DWDP is configurable", but gather_kernel (llm_args.py:5898) also selects the dense gather kernel, in both modes; please add it. (3) The totals are stale (+17,025 vs +17,031; commit 3 +3,103 / tests +1,274 vs +3,109 / +1,280).

Status of my earlier points:

  • [Blocking] P6 ran after the last dense collective (was dense/setup.py:469): resolved. Collective #6 agrees on the commit outcome (dense/setup.py:437-438, 473-493), and P6 reports a local failure instead of raising (667-684).
  • [Blocking] fc31_act_scale compared bitwise across ranks (was dwdp/setup.py:987): resolved by _act_scale_matches (dwdp/setup.py:969-984) with rank 0's value installed; one follow-up inline at dwdp/setup.py:983.
  • [Possibly blocking] drop-in-flight switch ineffective under the overlap scheduler (was py_executor.py:241): resolved; the feature left this PR.
  • [Possibly blocking] graceful-shutdown timeout scope and private helper (was serve.py:80): resolved. serve_graceful_shutdown_timeout_s is passed by the LLM, multimodal-encoder and embedding servers (serve.py:854-855, 892-893, 1016), its scope is in the field description (llm_args.py:6265-6275), and the helper import is gone.
  • [Required] unmanaged MoE layers shrunk to the rank's range (was interface.py:431): resolved. _decide_dwdp (configurable_moe.py:529-559) sizes and registers only eligible layers; the memory cost of the full tables is inline at configurable_moe.py:552.
  • [Required] drop-in-flight on generation servers (was py_executor.py:2447): resolved; removed.
  • [Required] unrecognized TRTLLM_DWDP_DENSE values (was dense/config.py:96): resolved; enable_dense is a pydantic bool (llm_args.py:5863).
  • [Required] standalone gate ignored the server role (was gate.py:137): resolved by the trtllm-serve check (serve.py:644-680); two gaps in it are inline at serve.py:667 and serve.py:714.
  • [Required] one concern per PR: still applies (first bullet above).
  • [Required] switches as environment variables (was dense/config.py:74): resolved with the DwdpConfig fields and BaseLlmArgs.serve_graceful_shutdown_timeout_s. Main's six Kimi-K3 DWDP16 perf-sanity recipes (tests/scripts/perf-sanity/disaggregated/gb300_kimi-k3-fp4-dwdp16.yaml) still set the now-deprecated TRTLLM_DWDP_PREFETCH_GATHER / TRTLLM_DWDP_GATHER_KERNEL; worth moving them to copy_mode: gather / gather_kernel: tma so CI covers the new fields.
  • [Required] no user docs: mostly resolved (moe-perf-guide.md:400-451, disagg-serving.md:396-411, blog19:103-104); the remaining gaps are inline at moe-perf-guide.md:407 and :411.
  • [Required] PR description (collective #1 on the default path, the CodeRabbit block): resolved; the new mismatches are in the second bullet above.
  • [Required] missing type annotations (was dwdp/setup.py:649): resolved; none of the functions the PR adds is unannotated.
  • [Required] drop-in-flight read per rank from the environment (was py_executor.py:1053): resolved; removed.
  • [Required] history and N=16 facts in comments (was dense/plan.py:21): resolved in plan.py, config.py and gate.py; still applies at weight_buffer.py:113-115 (inline).
  • [Required] MOE_DEVELOPER_GUIDE.md lifecycle (was MOE_DEVELOPER_GUIDE.md:106): resolved (MOE_DEVELOPER_GUIDE.md:76-108, 120-130); one stale sentence at :85 is folded into the moe-perf-guide.md:411 comment.
  • [Required] conflict with #20359 (was py_executor_creator.py:1394): resolved; rebased onto #20359 and #19646, and the head also merges cleanly with current main (508f8dd).

On Shixiaowei02's attention-DP + ALLGATHER point (configurable_moe.py:556): fixed as far as I can see. _runs_under_dwdp gives every layer of a DWDP mapping no communication strategy (configurable_moe.py:604, 714), and the creator accepts DWDP only with tp_size == 1 or dp_size == tp_size (py_executor_creator.py:840-845).

[Blocker] dwdp_config.gather_kernel reaches the launcher through the process environment, but the launcher reads TRTLLM_DWDP_GATHER_KERNEL only once per process: gatherUsesTma() caches it in a function-local static (cpp/tensorrt_llm/kernels/dwdpFabricGather.cu:105-113). Once any gather has launched in a process, a later DWDP instance in that process that asks for another kernel keeps running the first one, while this function logs "dwdp_config.gather_kernel=... overrides TRTLLM_DWDP_GATHER_KERNEL=...".

That happens whenever worker processes outlive an LLM instance, e.g. under trtllm-llmapi-launch, where MpiCommSession keeps the shared MPI pool for later LLM instances (llmapi/mpi_session.py:801-816, 1108-1110): a register vs tma comparison in one script measures the first kernel twice. The variable is also never restored when the manager exits (pyexecutor/dwdp.py:397-409 resets the SM reserve and the registration, not this), so a later instance with gather_kernel unset logs a deprecation warning for a variable its user never set. Outputs stay correct; it is the knob that is silently ignored.

Could the kernel be passed to the op per launch (it already takes the block and thread counts)? If that is a C++ change you would rather keep out of this PR, please at least remember the kernel the first select_kernel applied in this process and raise (or warn that it stays fixed for the life of the process) when a later manager asks for a different one, restore the previous value when the manager exits, and say in the gather_kernel description that the choice is per process. (Follow-up to the gather-kernel thread on llm_args.py.)

Fixed in C++, as you suggested (new commit 10). trtllm::dwdp_fabric_gather takes the kernel as an argument of each launch: invokeDwdpFabricGather and the op get use_tma (the schema gains bool use_tma=False, so six-argument calls keep the register kernel), and the function-local static that cached TRTLLM_DWDP_GATHER_KERNEL is gone. Each manager resolves the kernel once (fabric_gather.use_tma: gather_kernel, else the deprecated variable, with its deprecation warning) and passes it to every launch of its gather: the expert weight manager, the attached dense transfer and the standalone transfer. select_kernel is removed, and nothing writes the environment any more, so there is nothing to restore. Two DWDP instances in one process can now run different kernels.

Tests: on one GPU, register, tma and register launches in one process each copy every byte and run the kernel they name, as the profiler records it; the peer-GPU expert gather runs with both kernels; use_tma never writes the environment; the dense transfer check after the expert setup also compares the kernel.

[Blocker] This update and the expert prefetch that reads it are not ordered. torch.cuda.synchronize() runs before the add_ (default stream); run_pass then calls mgr.start_forward() first (:187-188), which issues the first layers' expert copies on the weight manager's copy stream, a non-blocking pool stream (weight_manager.py:226-227). Those copies wait only on their slots' consume events (weight_manager.py:378-391), which completed before the synchronize, and invalidate_prefetch() only resets the host schedule (prefetch_schedule.py:164-167). compute_stream.wait_stream(current_stream()) comes after start_forward and orders only the compute stream.

So the first expert copy can read the pre-update bytes, and mismatches() then reports ('E', layer): an intermittent failure of a pre-merge l0_b200 test (and of l0_gb300_multi_gpus) that says nothing about the code under test. It passed 20/20 in #67458, so the window is small, but nothing closes it.

Fix: torch.cuda.synchronize() after the add_ loop, or make the copy stream wait_stream on the current stream before start_forward. Main's test_dwdp_prefetch_gpu.py:211-216 has the same pattern and could take the same one-line fix.

Fixed (commit 2): the test synchronizes after the add_ loop, so the next pass's first expert copies on the copy stream read the new weights. I made the same fix in test_dwdp_prefetch_gpu.py's _drive, synchronizing every device that holds source tensors, since the peer-GPU variant updates them on their own devices.

[Blocker] With the KV-cache estimation off, this moves DWDP setup ahead of build_managers only when dense DWDP is requested; expert-only DWDP still allocates its prefetch ring at :1321-1323, after the final KV cache has been sized. Without the estimation the KV cache gets free_gpu_memory_fraction (0.9 by default) of the memory free after the weights (configure_kv_cache_capacity, _util.py:1377-1378, 3143-3144; llm_args.py:7647-7649), so on an expert-only Kimi-K3 DWDP context server with TRTLLM_SKIP_KV_CACHE_ESTIMATION=1 the prefetch ring (two slots, about 27 GiB at DWDP8 per the description) no longer fits, and every rank raises PrefetchRingMemoryError at startup unless the fraction is lowered by hand.

Main has the same order (it failed in cuMemCreate instead), but this is the same memory starvation commit 6 fixes for dense DWDP, and commit 4 makes exactly this configuration otherwise work, so the sibling should get the same treatment. Could every DWDP mode be set up before build_managers when the estimation is off (drop dense_mode is not None and here and update test_dwdp_creator.py:336-347)? If the current order is deliberate, please document the fraction that expert-only DWDP needs without the estimation.

Done (commit 6, retitled "DWDP: set DWDP up before the final KV cache when KV-cache estimation is off"). With the estimation off, every DWDP mode is now set up before build_managers, expert-only DWDP included, so the prefetch ring holds its memory before the KV cache takes its share. test_dwdp_creator.py now expects the setup before build_managers in all three modes.

[Possibly blocking] In a trtllm-serve disaggregated_mpi_worker launch this refusal fires only in the proxy process, and the launch then hangs instead of failing. The leader spawns the proxy guard and blocks in launch_remote_mpi_session_server(sub_comm) (serve.py:2988-3004), whose serve() loop returns only on a stop message (llmapi/mpi_session.py:1208-1308). The proxy sets TRTLLM_DISAGG_ROLE=generation (serve.py:2898-2901) and raises here before any LLM or RemoteMpiCommSessionClient exists, so no stop message is ever sent; the autonomous guard reaps it without signalling the leader (llmapi/_llmapi_process_guard.py:193-257), and the other ranks wait in MPICommExecutor(sub_comm) (serve.py:2855).

So enable_dense under generation_servers (or at the top level, which the generation servers inherit) prints the BadParameter and then holds the allocation until the scheduler kills the job, instead of the "refused before the model loads" the description promises. Could disaggregated_mpi_worker refuse it from server_cfg.type on every rank before split_world_comm (or at least on the leader before it spawns the proxy), so that all ranks exit? (Follow-up to the role-check thread on gate.py.)

Fixed (commit 2). disaggregated_mpi_worker now refuses a generation server's enable_dense on every rank, from each server config's type, before it picks a device and splits the world. server_cfg.other_args already holds what a server inherits from the top level, so enable_dense there is caught too. Every rank parses the same configuration, so every rank exits with the error; the check in the server process stays as before. A test runs disaggregated_mpi_worker with enable_dense under generation_servers, at the top level, and only under context_servers (which passes).

[Possibly blocking] Keeping the full expert table for unmanaged layers fixes the wrong drafts from my earlier comment, but its memory cost lands on main's own DWDP recipes. Every DWDP end-to-end entry of examples/dwdp/dwdp_reproduce.yaml runs DeepSeek-R1 NVFP4 with MTP (mtp: 1 or 3), moe_config.backend: CUTEDSL and free_gpu_memory_fraction: 0.3 (examples/dwdp/reproduce.py:240-272). Its BF16 MTP layer is unmanaged, so each context GPU now holds 256 experts of it (256 x 3 x 7168 x 2048 x 2 B, about 22.5 GB) instead of 64 (about 5.6 GB): about 16.9 GB more weights per context GPU, taken from the KV cache and the activation headroom. The description only says this "costs memory".

What decides it: run e2e_20_40_dwdp (20 context servers in 5 DWDP4 groups, MTP 1) on GB200 at the merge base and at this head, and compare per context GPU the weight memory, the KV cache size logged at startup, whether every server starts and the benchmark completes, and output throughput and TTFT. If a server runs out of memory, or output tokens/s/GPU drops or TTFT p50 rises by more than 2%, the recipes need retuning in this PR. Either way, could the warning state the bytes kept per rank, and moe-perf-guide.md mention the cost?

Your numbers match ours. On DeepSeek-R1 with MTP at DWDP4, the BF16 MTP layer now keeps all 256 experts on every context GPU (256 x 3 x 7168 x 2048 x 2 B, about 22.5 GB) instead of its rank's 64 (about 5.6 GB), so about 16.9 GB more, which comes out of the KV cache and the activation headroom.

We keep the full table: DWDP does not manage that layer, so nothing fetches the experts a rank does not store, and computing it with only the rank's share is what gave the wrong drafts of your earlier comment. We have not rerun e2e_20_40_dwdp on GB200 for this PR, and we are not changing the recipes, the warning or the docs for it here. The description's Limitations ("MoE layers DWDP manages") states that such a layer keeps every expert on every rank, at a memory cost, and the warnings name the layers and the reason.

[Required] This is the only call of the role check, so two kinds of launch get neither the refusal nor the warning the enable_dense description promises (llm_args.py:5871-5876):

  • trtllm-serve --grpc (serve.py:1786-1862) builds its LLM in launch_smg_server / launch_grpc_server without this check, and it also rejects --server_role;
  • a launcher that exports one of the legacy role values tensorrt_llm/usage/schemas/README.md:312 documents as compatible (gen0, ctx0) is compared literally against "generation" / "context" (:667, :673), so a gen0 generation server is only warned and a ctx0 context server gets a false warning (usage_lib.py:799-805 normalizes with lower() / startswith).

On an eager gRPC decode worker that carries enable_dense over from a context config, every decode step then gathers every covered layer, with no message. Could the gRPC branch run the same check before launch_smg_server / launch_grpc_server (or the description be narrowed to the OpenAI HTTP server), and the role be normalized the way usage_lib does?

Both fixed (commit 2). The gRPC branch runs the same check before launch_smg_server and launch_grpc_server (for OpenEngine after its multi-frontend setup, so an attached frontend does not repeat the warning). Since gRPC mode takes no --server_role, the role comes from TRTLLM_DISAGG_ROLE, and the warning and the field description name TRTLLM_DISAGG_ROLE=context for gRPC servers. The role is read the way usage_lib reads it: case-insensitive, with ctx* and gen* legacy values counting as context and generation. Tests cover both gRPC protocols, and gen0, GENERATION, ctx0 and Context.

DWDP can be applied to the prefill phase of a serving system when the context batch is large enough for computation to hide the weight prefetch. Decode typically has too little computation to hide these transfers, so generation keeps the normal EP dispatch. Experimental cost of DWDP is a TTFT regression, from a lower service rate on the context stage, plus extra prefetch memory: each rank stores only its local experts, but adds `num_prefetch_slots` prefetch slots (two by default) of about one layer of remote experts each; more slots let the prefetch run further ahead of the compute. DWDP cannot run on the same MoE path as EPLB. A disaggregated deployment can use DWDP on context servers and EPLB on generation servers.

Each worker of a DWDP group stores a contiguous range of the routed experts and prefetches the others. Leave `dwdp_config.num_experts_per_worker` and `num_prefetch_experts` at 0 (the default) for the balanced partition: each worker stores `floor` or `ceil` of `num_experts / dwdp_size` experts, the lower ranks the larger count, and no expert is stored twice. Set both for a strided partition, where worker `r` stores the experts `[r * num_prefetch_experts, r * num_prefetch_experts + num_experts_per_worker)`, capped at `num_experts`: `num_prefetch_experts` is the stride between consecutive workers, not a number of prefetched experts. Equal values give disjoint ranges and a smaller stride overlapping ones; the ranges must cover every expert. DWDP manages the MoE layers that run the CuTeDSL backend with NVFP4 weights and no locality domains; any other MoE layer, such as a BF16 MTP layer, keeps every expert on every rank, with a warning naming it.

[Required] This describes strided partitions differently from ExpertPartition.strided (dwdp/specs.py:164-198): the code cuts the last range short only when the two values are equal and the last rank keeps at least one expert, and with a smaller stride the ranges must end exactly at num_experts. A config that follows this text, e.g. 896 experts with dwdp_size: 12 and 80/75, or 72 experts with dwdp_size: 2 and 40/33, passes DwdpConfig and the serve schemas, and then every rank raises ValueError when the model is built.

The attached example below (:417-426) also pins Kimi-K3's 56/56 right after recommending 0/0, and omits moe_config.backend: CUTEDSL, which Kimi-K3 with DWDP requires (modeling_kimi_linear.py:1679-1683; AUTO resolves to TRTLLM for Kimi-K3), so copied as is it fails at model build.

Could the text state the accepted forms (uniform; equal values with a shorter, non-empty last range; a smaller stride only when (dwdp_size - 1) * stride + size == num_experts), and the example drop the two partition fields and add the backend?

Fixed (commit 8). The text now lists the three accepted forms with their conditions, and says that any other pair raises on every rank when the model is built, since the expert count comes from the model. The attached example drops the two partition fields (balanced) and sets moe_config.backend: CUTEDSL.

[Required] The rules here that depend only on LlmArgs fields (CUDA graphs, torch.compile, prefill graphs, sleep/LoRA/speculative, locality domains, tp/pp/cp, attention DP, the overlap scheduler) run only in the worker, after the MPI ranks have been spawned. CODING_GUIDELINES.md (Pydantic guidelines, Validation) asks to "Use @field_validator and @model_validator instead of manual validate() or is_valid() methods" and to keep validation in the class, or in the parent when it depends on the parent's fields.

As is, dwdp_config: {dwdp_size: 16, enable_dense: true} with the default cuda_graph_config (on by default, llm_args.py:6806-6807) is accepted by LLM(), trtllm-serve and both serve schemas, and then fails on every rank in this gate. The same list is also kept by hand in four places: here, the creator's DWDP block (py_executor_creator.py:831-852), the field description (llm_args.py:5863-5883) and moe-perf-guide.md:442-449.

Could these rules move into a TorchLlmArgs model validator, leaving only the host probes (FABRIC handles, MPI backend, gather op) in the gate? Main's expert-DWDP checks in the creator could move with them.

Done, in a new commit 11. TorchLlmArgs.validate_dwdp_launch refuses, when the arguments are built, what the arguments alone rule out:

  • the dense rules from the gate: both modes, eager execution (no CUDA graphs, torch.compile or prefill CUDA graphs), no sleep, LoRA or speculative config, locality domains off, pipeline and context parallel size 1;
  • main's expert DWDP checks from the creator: dwdp_size > 1, complete model replicas (pipeline and context parallel size 1, tensor parallel size 1 or attention DP), no CUDA graphs.

The gate keeps only the host probes (FABRIC handles; for standalone the MPI backend and the gather op) and picks the mode; the creator keeps the MoE backend check, which has to follow the model defaults. Your example now fails in LLM() and trtllm-serve with "DWDP does not support CUDA graphs; set cuda_graph_config=None."

The serve schema generator mirrors the rules as if/then rules on the values a YAML sets, at the top level and in each disaggregated server block, so both schemas now reject, for example, cuda_graph_config: {} or pipeline_parallel_size: 2 next to dwdp_config. They require no field: a value left out may come from --set or, in a disaggregated configuration, from the top level, so a missing cuda_graph_config: null stays with runtime validation. The field description and moe-perf-guide.md now describe the rules once, as the validator applies them.

[Required] Three gaps in the new docs:

  1. Nothing says when dense DWDP pays off. Per the description's own numbers it frees memory, and throughput improves only when max_num_tokens (or the KV fraction) is raised with it.
  2. A server the gate rejects leaves its DWDP peers waiting until TRTLLM_DWDP_RENDEZVOUS_TIMEOUT_S (1800 s) or, under MPI, indefinitely. That limitation is only in the PR description, so an operator whose group stalls finds nothing here.
  3. MOE_DEVELOPER_GUIDE.md:85 says a model with dense roots runs setup collectives Bump onnx from 1.12.0 to 1.13.0 #1-update aarch64 libraries to main branch #6, but with enable_dense off only Bump onnx from 1.12.0 to 1.13.0 #1 runs (dense/setup.py:258).

Could this section add 1 and 2, and the developer guide fix 3?

All three done (commit 8):

  1. The dense DWDP section says that it frees memory and does not make a server faster by itself; the gain comes from raising max_num_tokens or the KV-cache share with it.
  2. It says that a server whose launch is refused leaves its DWDP peers waiting in the first collective, until TRTLLM_DWDP_RENDEZVOUS_TIMEOUT_S (1800 s by default) with the store rendezvous and without a limit under MPI.
  3. MOE_DEVELOPER_GUIDE.md now says that collective Bump onnx from 1.12.0 to 1.13.0 #1 runs on every rank of a model with dense roots, and Add static libraries for batch manager #2-update aarch64 libraries to main branch #6 only with enable_dense.

The pool is driver memory that blocks held by the PyTorch caching allocator cannot serve, so
those go back to the driver first (the transport ends with that too: a no-op in practice).
The pool takes whole pages per slot, as ``PagePool`` counts them. With exactly enough free
memory the pool is allocated as before; with less, every rank would otherwise die in

[Required] This docstring narrates the change ("allocated as before; with less, every rank would otherwise die in cuMemCreate partway through it"). AGENTS.md: "Put a change's rationale and history (why it was made, what it replaces, ticket/PR references) in the PR description, not in code comments. Code comments should explain the code as it stands for a future reader, not narrate how it got there." Thanks for the careful re-review. The 12 inline points are answered in their threads. The rest:

  • One concern per PR. We keep commits 1 and 9 in this PR; the description's "Why one PR" says why they ride along.
  • PR description vs code. Fixed in the description: P1-P5 failures restore the tensors, while a failure reported in collective update aarch64 libraries to main branch #6 needs the model loaded again in a new process; gather_kernel is in the Summary and the Settings table; the totals are recomputed.
  • Perf-sanity recipes. Main's six Kimi-K3 DWDP16 recipes now set copy_mode: gather and gather_kernel: tma instead of the two deprecated variables (commit 3).
  • CI. Agreed that the GB200 DWDP accuracy cases must pass on this head before merge; we will run the pipeline with the full pre-merge label.

The series now has 11 commits; the two new ones are 10 (the gather kernel per launch, the only C++ change) and 11 (the launch rules in TorchLlmArgs).

… handlers (opt-in)

A server can finish its work and then hang at shutdown: uvicorn waits for every running request
handler, and a handler can wait for a final response that never comes. A prototype LLM API setting
bounds that wait. It is off by default; unset, the stop path is unchanged.

- serve_graceful_shutdown_timeout_s (BaseLlmArgs; openai_server.py, commands/serve.py): trtllm-serve
  passes the LLM's value to OpenAIServer, which gives it to uvicorn as timeout_graceful_shutdown, so
  handlers that never finish are cancelled and the lifespan shutdown (which sends the engine its quit
  sentinel) still runs. It applies to the LLM, embedding and multimodal-encoder servers, in every
  frontend process. The disaggregated router and coordinator keep uvicorn's default; the requests
  they forward have their own timeout (--request_timeout). The three launchers and
  OpenAIServer.__call__ get their missing annotations.

The field is in the serve schemas (regenerated with scripts/generate_trtllm_serve_schemas.py), the
LLM API references (tests/unittest/api_stability/references/llm.yaml) and the telemetry manifest
(tensorrt_llm/usage/llm_args_golden_manifest.json, regenerated). docs/source/features/disagg-serving.md
describes it in a new section, "Bounding the graceful stop of a server".

Tests (CPU):
- test_llm_args.py: the default; a timeout of 0 or -1 rejected.
- test_openai_server_graceful_shutdown.py: the uvicorn.Config keywords with and without a timeout, a
  timeout that is not positive rejected by OpenAIServer, the LLM, multimodal-encoder and embedding
  launchers passing the LLM's value, and a SIGINT child server whose hung handler is cancelled at
  the bound. Registered in l0_cpu.
- test_trtllm_serve_config_schemas.py: both schemas accept the field, and reject a timeout of 0 and
  a fractional timeout.

Dense DWDP row-shards the replicated dense weights of Kimi-K3's MoE decoder layers (attention, shared
expert, latent projections and norm, router; layer 0 stays replicated) over the DWDP group, and gathers
each layer's shard set two layers ahead on the expert DWDP copy stream into small staging slots. On a
context-only rank this frees all but 1/dwdp_size of the covered dense weights for the KV cache. It is
opt-in through a prototype DwdpConfig field, dwdp_config.enable_dense; nothing else of it is
configurable. Its copies use the expert transfer: trtllm::dwdp_fabric_gather when
TRTLLM_DWDP_PREFETCH_GATHER is on (kernel chosen by TRTLLM_DWDP_GATHER_KERNEL), otherwise the copy
engines.

- modules/dwdp/dense (new): DenseConfig, the settings setup and the runtime read (a launch sets only
  whether dense DWDP is on; the other fields keep their defaults and are set by tests), the collector
  and blob layout, the row store (FABRIC handles, plus an in-process loopback for tests), the
  per-layer copy plans and launcher, repointing of the module tensors into the slots, the runtime
  (slot rings, RAW/WAR events, demand fetch and fences, the WAR barrier after an aborted forward),
  and setup: phases P1-P6 over six collectives, one after each of P1-P5 and one that agrees on the
  outcome of the commit, so every rank reaches the same verdict and raises or returns together.
  - A failure in any phase on any rank makes every rank roll back and raise; dense DWDP never falls
    back to serving with replicated weights.
  - Past the commit point (P6) a rank's failure, or an original storage that outlives the commit
    on any rank in strict mode (which tests turn on), makes every rank release its dense state and
    raise after collective NVIDIA#6, instead of one rank raising alone while its peers wait in their next
    collective. Without strict mode a leaked original is a warning and a count on the commit line.
  - The slots are filled with zeros at commit.
- The runtime's copy schedule. Once a layer's attention (H2) or MoE block (H3) has closed its read
  window, the runtime enqueues, in layer order, each next layer whose staging slots are free (empty,
  or their holder's window closed), so these copies never need the fence. Within a forward that is
  L(l+2) at H2 of layer l. At the end of a forward it goes on into the first two layers of the next
  one, as the expert prefetch schedule does with its last MoE layers, so a completed forward leaves
  the next one primed. With two expert prefetch slots each L(l) is enqueued right before E(l): H2 of
  layer l-2 enqueues L(l) before that layer's MoE finishes and issues E(l). For Kimi-K3 the
  MoE-dense slots of layers 1 and 2 are read by layers 91 and 92 until H3, so the next forward's
  copies are E(1), L(1), E(2), L(2) (L before E with the attention segment alone); it reads them
  only after the gap between executor steps. With more expert prefetch slots each expert copy is
  issued earlier, ahead of its layer's dense copy; DwdpManager.setup says so at INFO.
- dense/gate.py: the launch gate py_executor_creator runs, when dwdp_config.enable_dense is set,
  before the DWDP manager and the model are built. It needs dwdp_size > 1, eager single-stream
  execution (no CUDA graphs, torch.compile or prefill graphs), no sleep, LoRA or speculative config,
  locality domains off (Linear and MLA keep _locality_domain_* shard copies dense DWDP does not
  move), the overlap scheduler off, tp/pp/cp size 1 and FABRIC peer handles.
- pyexecutor/dwdp.py: DwdpManager sets dense DWDP up after the expert setup on a model with dense
  roots, on every rank and with its own DwdpConfig.enable_dense, so ranks that disagree stop at the
  first collective; exposes the runtime as `dense`; and releases dense DWDP before the expert
  teardown. A rank that asks for dense DWDP on a model without dense roots raises.
  - start_forward (the executor loop) enqueues L(first), L(second) unless they are enqueued already,
    then starts the expert prefetch (DWDPWeightManager.start_forward). While a forward is still open,
    i.e. the previous one aborted, it enqueues nothing and leaves both to the model.
  - ensure_primed (H0, at the model's forward entry, on the execution stream) runs the dense WAR
    barrier after an aborted forward, enqueues L(first), L(second) unless already primed, then starts
    the expert prefetch, which enqueues nothing when the first MoE layers are in flight and otherwise
    restarts its sequence, synchronizing the device first if the aborted forward left a MoE layer
    bound. So L(first), L(second), E(first), E(second) is also the order after an abort that
    restarts the expert sequence.
  With a store rendezvous, mark_setup_done stays the last step of setup, after the dense collectives
  that also run over the store. Cleanup errors are logged with logger.error and the traceback, since
  the logger has no exception() method.
- llm_args.py: DwdpConfig.enable_dense (prototype, off by default). Both serve schemas and the
  telemetry manifest (dwdp_config.enable_dense) are regenerated.
- commands/serve.py: trtllm-serve refuses dwdp_config.enable_dense on a generation server before the
  LLM is built, since every decode step would gather every covered layer, and warns once on a server
  without the context role, naming --server_role CONTEXT. The role is the one the server's ranks see
  in TRTLLM_DISAGG_ROLE (from --server_role or a disaggregated MPI worker's server type), read as the
  usage telemetry reads it, so the legacy values ctx0 and gen0 count; a gRPC server, which takes no
  --server_role, runs the same check on the role its environment holds, and a server launched
  without a role is only warned. A disaggregated MPI launch refuses a generation server's
  enable_dense, set in generation_servers or inherited from the top level, on every rank before the
  world is split, so that no rank waits for a server that never starts.
- modules/dwdp/rendezvous.py: GroupComm, the collective calls DWDP setup makes on its group; dense
  setup takes its group as one.
- modeling_kimi_linear.py: the dense roots and the allow/exclude tables of each decoder layer, the
  read-window hooks H1-H3 in the decoder layer, H0 priming at the model's forward entry, and a
  load_weights guard. modeling_kimi_k25.py: the same load guard, and the annotation of its
  weights argument.
- model_loader.py: reload and begin_update_weights refuse a model dense DWDP sharded.
- weight_manager.py: copy_stream, use_gather and use_batched_prefetch properties for dense setup.
- MOE_DEVELOPER_GUIDE.md: how dense DWDP relates to the expert DWDP protocol.
  docs/source/developer-guide/moe-perf-guide.md: a Dense DWDP subsection (what it shards, the
  configuration, the launch requirements, context servers only, the same value on every server of
  the group, and the first collective that a Kimi-K3 server with expert DWDP runs with it off).

Tests (cpu_only): DenseConfig and how a launch builds it from DwdpConfig; the collector on a
K3-like toy decoder; setup on N rank threads over the loopback store and fake devices (disagreeing
ranks and failures in every phase raise everywhere; a failed commit on one rank, and a leaked
original in strict mode, make every rank raise after collective NVIDIA#6; without strict mode a leak is
committed and counted); the FABRIC store over a fake VMM (a handle cuMemCreate refuses is named by
its chunk, size and layers); the Kimi-K3 hook placement and load guard on a real model of a tiny
config; the ModelLoader guards; dense setup inside DwdpManager (with the rank's enable_dense, a
model without dense roots, and the INFO line for more than two expert prefetch slots); the gate,
which the creator runs only for enable_dense; the serve role check
(test_serve_context_only_settings.py, new, registered in l0_cpu: a generation server is refused,
by --server_role or as a disaggregated MPI worker's gen server; a server without the context role
is warned once; ctx0 and gen0 in any letter case are their roles; a disaggregated MPI launch is
refused on every rank before it picks a device, with enable_dense in generation_servers or at the
top level; a gRPC server of either protocol checks its environment's role); and enable_dense in
both serve schemas.
test_dense_protocol.py runs the runtime over a recording fake of the CUDA seam beside the real
DWDPWeightManager and its prefetch schedule, driven like the executor loop, the model and
ConfigurableMoE, and checks every dense and expert read with vector clocks over the log:
- where H2 and H3 record and what their fill enqueues, into the next forward included, for both
  segment sets; the copy order (cold start L(1), L(2), E(1), E(2); L(l) right before E(l) within a
  forward; E(1), L(1), E(2), L(2) at the K3 boundary; nothing at the next start), with two
  sensitivity checks (no fill at H2; the expert prefetch started before the dense priming);
- 1 to 5 and 92 layers with 2, 3 and 4 expert slots: race-free, no fence, demand fetch or host
  synchronization, primed after every forward;
- a forward aborted before H1, before H2, between the expert bind and finish, and before H3, at the
  first, second, middle and last two layers, recovered with and without the executor's start: the
  barrier on the execution stream, L(1), L(2) before the expert restart, a device synchronization
  only after an abandoned bind;
- invalidate_prefetch regathers E(1), E(2) only; the fence and the WAR barrier after an abort; 200
  random sequences of aborts (also inside a fill and inside H0's priming), starts whose forward fails
  before the model and invalidations.
test_dense_attached_gpu.py (GPU, registered in l0_b200 and l0_gb300_multi_gpus) runs the real runtime
and weight manager on one copy stream with a read kernel in every read window and checks every read's
bytes: 4 and 5 layers with 2 and 3 expert slots, slow reads or slow copies, both segment sets, a
warmup forward, steps, every abort point with its recovery and new expert weights; 92 layers at the
K3 boundary; a release right after a forward, with the next forward's copies in flight; skipping
H2's consume record is detected.
test_dwdp_creator.py gets the cpu_only marker, without which the CPU stage skips the file.
test_dwdp_prefetch_gpu.py's stand-in DwdpManager has no dense runtime.

…DP instances

Dense DWDP no longer needs expert DWDP. DwdpConfig gains three prototype fields: enable_experts (on
by default, so expert DWDP configs behave as before), copy_mode and gather_kernel. With
dwdp_config.enable_dense, dense DWDP runs in one of two modes, which the gate picks from
enable_experts:
- Attached (enable_experts with dwdp_size > 1, tp_size 1, overlap scheduler off): the behaviour of
  the previous commit. DwdpManager attaches the dense runtime to an attached DenseDwdpManager, which
  keeps the copy schedule on the expert copy stream (the next forward's first layers gathered at the
  end of a forward, the dense priming before the expert prefetch starts) and the teardown order
  (dense first).
- Standalone (enable_experts=False, enable_attention_dp, tp_size > 1, e.g. a 16-rank attention-DP
  context server): the dense group is the instance's tp group, created as an MPI sub-communicator
  with its own tag (0x4457), so it never pairs with MPIDist.tp_comm's tag-0 group; every rank of the
  instance builds it, since all of them share the launch's llm_args. The new DenseDwdpManager owns
  the runtime and a lazily created copy stream of its own. The overlap scheduler is allowed: the
  non-overlap executor loop primes the first layers, otherwise the forward entry (H0) does. The
  runtime does not gather the next forward's first layers at the end of a forward: no expert copies
  share its stream, and every forward is primed. With the gather, the manager keeps the gather's
  resident SMs out of the persistent compute grids from its registration, before the model is
  built, to its exit, as DwdpManager does for the expert gather. As with DwdpManager, a count pinned
  with TRTLLM_CUTEDSL_SM_RESERVE is reserved with every transfer, the copy engines included.
  trtllm-serve refuses enable_dense on a generation server and warns without the context role (the
  check of the previous commit), whichever the mode.
Expert DWDP over an attention-DP instance (enable_experts with tp_size > 1) is not a dense DWDP mode:
the gate rejects that launch with a message naming both modes.

copy_mode picks the transfer of every DWDP copy, the expert prefetch and the dense gathers alike:
per_slice, batched (one cudaMemcpyBatchAsync per layer on the copy engines) or gather (the SM fabric
gather; it holds SMs next to the MoE all-to-all). Unset, nothing changes: the expert prefetch uses
per_slice, batched with contention_opt, or gather with TRTLLM_DWDP_PREFETCH_GATHER=1, the attached
dense copies follow it, and standalone dense DWDP uses batched. An explicit value overrides that
selection; DwdpManager logs one warning when TRTLLM_DWDP_PREFETCH_GATHER asks otherwise, and refuses
copy_mode gather without a registered trtllm::dwdp_fabric_gather before it creates the DWDP group.
contention_opt keeps working, and so does TRTLLM_DWDP_PREFETCH_GATHER, which is now deprecated:
DwdpManager reports it once when copy_mode is unset. With copy_mode gather, gather_kernel picks the
gather kernel, register or tma, so that the transfer is set in one place. The launcher reads
TRTLLM_DWDP_GATHER_KERNEL once, at its first launch, and fabric_gather.select_kernel writes the
configured kernel there before the first gather (DwdpManager for the expert prefetch,
DenseDwdpManager before standalone setup), with a warning when it replaces a different value. Unset,
TRTLLM_DWDP_GATHER_KERNEL still applies and is reported as deprecated.

DwdpConfig validates the combinations, with messages that say what to set instead: enable_experts and
enable_dense both off has nothing to distribute; without expert DWDP the expert fields (dwdp_size,
num_groups, num_experts_per_worker, num_prefetch_experts, contention_opt, num_prefetch_slots) keep
their defaults, no DwdpManager is created and the mapping keeps no DWDP group; contention_opt needs
copy_mode batched or unset; gather_kernel needs copy_mode gather. Annotations cannot express these
rules, so generate_serve_schema() mirrors DwdpConfig._validate_modes in the DwdpConfig definition,
with three if/then rules: with enable_experts false, enable_dense true and the expert fields at
their defaults; with contention_opt true, copy_mode batched or null; with gather_kernel register or
tma, copy_mode gather. Both serve schemas thus reject the combinations DwdpConfig rejects.

Changes:
- llm_args.py: DwdpConfig.enable_experts, copy_mode and gather_kernel (prototype) and their
  validation; the descriptions of both modes. scripts/generate_trtllm_serve_schemas.py: the mode
  rules. Both serve schemas and the telemetry manifest (dwdp_config.copy_mode,
  dwdp_config.enable_experts, dwdp_config.gather_kernel) are regenerated.
- dense/manager.py (new): DenseDwdpManager for both modes, standalone_group, StandaloneTransfer and
  get_global_dense_dwdp_manager. A standalone manager takes the launch's DenseConfig, whose copy
  mode is its transfer; with the gather it selects the gather kernel before setup.
  prefetch_first_layers enqueues L(first), L(second) unless primed or a
  forward is open; ensure_primed (H0) runs the dense WAR barrier after an aborted forward, primes,
  and attached then starts the expert prefetch (the weight manager's start_forward).
- dense/gate.py: the two modes and their checks. Common to both: locality domains off, pp_size 1,
  cp_size 1. Standalone also needs the MPI backend and, for copy_mode gather, the gather op; a
  standalone gather launch passes with one warning (experimental).
- dense/config.py, setup.py, runtime.py, plan.py, types.py, __init__.py: mode-aware setup and copy
  launcher (DenseTransfer); standalone does not depend on the expert weight manager. DenseDWDP
  takes a required prefetch_next_pass, which setup turns on when it gets the expert MoE layers.
  DenseConfig.from_dwdp_config takes copy_mode and gather_kernel.
- modules/dwdp/weight_manager.py, setup.py, fabric_gather.py: expert_transfer() resolves the expert
  prefetch transfer from copy_mode and contention_opt; setup_dwdp and DWDPWeightManager take
  copy_mode. fabric_gather.resident_sms takes the caller's transport choice (gather=None keeps the
  expert one), env_request() reads TRTLLM_DWDP_PREFETCH_GATHER for the override warning, and
  select_kernel() points the launcher at the configured gather kernel.
- pyexecutor/dwdp.py: DwdpManager creates and registers an attached DenseDwdpManager and hands it the
  runtime instead of owning it. start_forward has the dense manager prime, then starts the expert
  prefetch, and still leaves an open forward to H0. __enter__ registers both managers, then sets the
  SM reserve, sized for the transfer copy_mode picks; a failure unregisters both and frees the group.
  setup passes copy_mode to setup_dwdp. With the gather, the manager selects gather_kernel before
  any prefetch, and it reports TRTLLM_DWDP_PREFETCH_GATHER as deprecated when copy_mode is unset.
- py_executor_creator.py, py_executor.py, _util.py: expert DWDP keys on dwdp_config.enable_experts
  (the DWDP mapping and DwdpManager); create and register the standalone manager before the model is
  built, hand it to the executor for the serving phase only, and prime from the non-overlap loop
  (PyExecutor._prime_dwdp: DwdpManager.start_forward with expert DWDP, else the standalone manager's
  prefetch_first_layers).
  - PyExecutorResources gains dense_dwdp_manager, which create_py_executor_resources and
    create_py_executor_instance pass through. _initialize_execution validates it together with
    dwdp_manager (_validate_dwdp_managers, which takes over the check that expert DWDP runs without
    the overlap scheduler, now before anything is bound or warmed up), binds it next to dwdp_manager,
    and _release_execution_pools exits it after dwdp_manager.
  - The executor gets it at construction without the KV-cache estimation; with it, through
    create_py_executor_resources and rebind_resources, since release_resources() at the end of the
    profiling phase exits the managers the executor holds.
  - With KV-cache estimation off, standalone setup runs before the final KV cache is sized, so the
    freed memory reaches it.
- modeling_kimi_linear.py: the K3 hooks read the dense manager (_dense_dwdp) in both modes.
- MOE_DEVELOPER_GUIDE.md: ConfigurableMoE is unaware of dense DWDP. moe-perf-guide.md: both modes,
  copy_mode and gather_kernel (the two environment variables they replace are deprecated), and the
  launch requirements of each.
- tests/scripts/perf-sanity/disaggregated/gb300_kimi-k3-fp4-*dwdp16*.yaml: the six Kimi-K3 DWDP16
  recipes set copy_mode gather and gather_kernel tma instead of the two deprecated environment
  variables, so CI runs the new fields.

Tests:
- New: test_dense_gate (the two modes are accepted; a launch that fits neither is refused with what
  it found; copy_mode standalone, a gather without its op refused, an attached gather left to
  DwdpManager; the creator runs the gate for enable_dense only and returns its mode) and
  test_dense_executor (who primes, either executor loop, expert DWDP still refusing the overlap
  scheduler, both managers refused, shutdown exiting the manager it holds once, after the KV
  caches, the tagged standalone group; the standalone gather's SM reserve from registration to
  exit, none for the copy engines or an attached manager, a pinned TRTLLM_CUTEDSL_SM_RESERVE with
  every transfer; the standalone gather selecting its kernel before setup; a model without dense
  roots refused before the group is built).
- Updated: test_dense_protocol (the driver goes through the real attached DenseDwdpManager; two
  standalone K3 forwards keep the per-forward schedule, L(1), L(2) at the start, L(l+2) at H2 and
  nothing at H3, and recover from an abort at H1, H2 or H3; the random sequences include
  standalone), test_dense_kimi_hooks (both modes), test_dense_setup (only attached setup turns
  prefetch_next_pass on; ranks that differ on enable_dense stop at the first collective),
  test_fabric_gather (resident_sms with the caller's choice; select_kernel: the configured kernel
  over the environment, the environment alone reported as deprecated), test_dense_config
  (from_dwdp_config takes copy_mode and gather_kernel), test_dwdp_creator (the rollback of a
  standalone manager), test_dwdp_manager (the attached dense manager; copy_mode reaching setup_dwdp
  and sizing the SM reserve, the override warning, a gather without its op refused before the
  group, gather_kernel selected before the first prefetch, TRTLLM_DWDP_PREFETCH_GATHER without
  copy_mode reported as deprecated), test_dwdp_prefetch_pipeline (copy_mode picks the prefetch
  transfer whatever TRTLLM_DWDP_PREFETCH_GATHER says), and the stand-in DwdpManager of
  test_dwdp_prefetch_gpu and test_dense_attached_gpu (an attached DenseDwdpManager).
- test_llm_args.py: the DwdpConfig combinations: the defaults, the accepted ones, nothing to
  distribute, expert fields without expert DWDP, contention_opt with another copy_mode, an unknown
  copy_mode, gather_kernel without the gather, an unknown gather_kernel.
  test_trtllm_serve_config_schemas.py: enable_experts, copy_mode and gather_kernel in both schemas;
  test_dwdp_modes_match_runtime checks 25 combinations against DwdpConfig and both schemas, the
  disaggregated one at the top level and under context_servers and generation_servers: the
  accepted ones, nothing to distribute, each expert field without expert DWDP, contention_opt
  with each copy_mode, and gather_kernel with and without the gather.
- The executor tests that assemble a PyExecutor without __init__ and reach the DWDP managers
  (shutdown, the executor loop) set dense_dwdp_manager as they set dwdp_manager.
- test_executor_resource_rebind.py: the rebind binds dense_dwdp_manager like the other resources,
  and release_resources() exits a bound DWDP manager of either kind after the KV caches and detaches
  it, so the final shutdown does not exit it again.

…e estimation is off

With KV-cache estimation off, the executor serves from its construction. That happens with
TRTLLM_SKIP_KV_CACHE_ESTIMATION=1; with context parallelism, VANILLA attention or an encoder-decoder
model; and with a model without a KV cache. Only the serving resources the creator rebinds after the
estimation (create_py_executor_resources, then rebind_resources) got dwdp_manager. So with expert
DWDP, whether or not dense DWDP is attached, the executor:
- did not start its forwards through the manager: _prime_dwdp found none, so the non-overlap loop
  never called DwdpManager.start_forward. The first forward, and the first after a forward that
  stopped inside the expert sequence, issued their first expert copies only at their first bind
  instead of ahead of it; every other forward bound the copies the previous forward's last MoE
  layers had issued. With dense DWDP committed, the model's forward entry (H0) starts the dense and
  the expert prefetch itself.
- did not drop the prefetch after a control action: the executor calls invalidate_prefetch on the
  manager it holds, so the copies the last forward had issued for the next one kept the expert
  weights from before the action.
- never exited the manager at shutdown. Dense DWDP was not released, expert DWDP was not torn down and
  the DWDP group was not freed. Both managers stayed registered, so the process refused a later
  DwdpManager.

The executor now gets dwdp_manager=dwdp_manager if not estimating_kv_cache else None at
construction, as it already gets the standalone dense manager.
- With the estimation on, nothing changes: the profiling phase holds no manager, so
  release_resources() at its end exits none, and rebind_resources binds the manager for serving.
- With it off, the executor binds it at construction, starts every forward through it (_prime_dwdp
  -> start_forward), drops its prefetch after a control action and exits it once at shutdown.
- Behaviour change with it off: like the serving phase with the estimation on, the executor now
  refuses expert DWDP with the overlap scheduler on (a ValueError at construction, rolled back by
  create_py_executor). Before, it was built without the manager.
- A construction error after the executor got the manager is still rolled back once by
  create_py_executor.
Unchanged: with the estimation off, expert DWDP setup still runs after the final KV cache is sized.

Tests (test_dwdp_creator.py): _create_py_executor_impl runs to its end over the stand-ins of
test_py_executor_creator_mla_cache_reuse_sync.py, with stand-in DWDP managers and a PyExecutor built
without __init__ (its release_resources logs the managers it would exit, its rebind_resources binds
the serving phase's), for expert-only and attached DWDP, with the estimation on and off and for a
model without a KV cache. The manager is set up once.
- Estimation off, or no KV cache: the executor gets the DwdpManager at construction and starts its
  forwards through it (_prime_dwdp -> start_forward).
- Estimation on: unchanged, the executor is built without the manager, so the release that ends the
  profiling phase exits none; the serving resources it is rebound to carry the manager, through
  which it starts its forwards.
That shutdown and release_resources exit the manager the executor holds is tested in
test_dense_executor.py and test_executor_resource_rebind.py.

…ch ring is allocated

A DWDP8 context-only run (112 resident experts per rank, attached dense DWDP) died at startup on every
rank: PagePool.create ran out of device memory (CUDA_ERROR_OUT_OF_MEMORY) while it allocated the
expert prefetch ring.
DwdpManager.setup ran the whole expert setup first, so the expert prefetch ring (two slots, each the
remote experts of one MoE layer) was allocated while the replicated dense weights were still
resident, and did not fit next to them. Dense DWDP, which frees them, ran only after.

DwdpManager.setup now sets dense DWDP up first:
- setup_dense_dwdp runs before setup_dwdp, on every rank of a model with dense roots, over the same
  group, ranks, device and MoE layers. One INFO line precedes it: its collective NVIDIA#1 is now the group's
  first collective of the setup and waits for every rank. Its transfer is an _AttachedTransfer: a copy
  stream made on the first read (new_expert_copy_stream, in P2), and use_gather/use_batched_prefetch
  computed as DWDPWeightManager computes them. Dense setup needs nothing else from the expert setup:
  the dense roots never reach the routed experts, and the transport, the ring and the backend fixup do
  not change what dense DWDP collects.
- setup_dwdp and DWDPWeightManager take an optional copy_stream: the weight manager adopts the stream
  dense DWDP already runs on, so the dense and the expert copies still share one copy stream. A check
  refuses a weight manager on another stream or with other transfer flags, and, on a repeated setup
  where dense DWDP ran on the weight manager itself, any other weight manager.
- setup_dwdp also gets the committed runtime's slot storages (reserved_storages) and refuses an expert
  weight in one of them before the transport. In the new order a dense root that reached a
  routed-expert weight would otherwise make the transport copy a slot as the experts and free it under
  the dense runtime.
- attach(runtime, expert=weight_manager) comes last, as before. If the expert setup or a check fails
  after the commit, the unattached runtime is released and the error propagates.
- On a model without dense roots, the refusal of a dwdp_config.enable_dense request stays after the
  expert setup. A repeated setup for the same model after dense DWDP stayed off runs dense setup on the
  weight manager, as before.
- With a store rendezvous, mark_setup_done stays the last step of setup, after the dense and the
  expert collectives.
The setup peak becomes the larger of (replicated dense + dense store + slots) and (dense shard + ring)
instead of their sum. The state after setup, and so the KV-cache estimate, is unchanged.

Also:
- WeightBuffer.create compares the ring, the page pool of the expert prefetch slots
  (DwdpConfig.num_prefetch_slots, two by default), with the free memory (mem_get_info after
  empty_cache) before PagePool allocates a page, and raises PrefetchRingMemoryError, a picklable
  RuntimeError naming the sizes of every slot and the remedies (dense DWDP for models with dense
  roots, which dwdp_config.enable_dense turns on; fewer prefetch slots when there are more than
  two), instead of failing in cuMemCreate
  partway through. A ring that fits is allocated as before. This applies with expert DWDP alone too.
  "[WeightBuffer] Created" now names the ring, and a new "[DWDP Setup] ... memory after weight buffer"
  line gives the free memory after it.
- PagePool no longer releases its handles twice when a page allocation fails: its failure path released
  them and left them in place for __del__ to release again. It now releases them once, through
  release(), which logs a handle that fails to release and goes on, so no other handle leaks and the
  allocation error stays the one raised.

Unchanged: the forward-time schedule and events, the teardown order (dense first), the dense verdicts,
both KV-estimation flows, expert-only (a dense setup that is off creates no stream, so the weight
manager makes its own) and standalone. Changed, attached on a model with dense roots: the dense
collectives run before the expert ones; a dense failure raises before any expert setup; the
[DWDP Dense] lines come before "[DWDP Setup] ... memory before setup".
MOE_DEVELOPER_GUIDE.md's DWDP lifecycle shows the order: dense DWDP commits before the expert
prefetch ring is allocated, the dense priming precedes the expert start, and dense DWDP is released
first.

Tests:
- test_dwdp_manager.py: dense setup runs on the attached transfer before the expert setup and before
  the model reference is kept, and setup_dwdp gets no copy stream when dense DWDP stays off. The expert
  setup gets the copy stream dense setup created and the committed slots' storages as
  reserved_storages; when it then fails (PrefetchRingMemoryError), the unattached runtime is released
  and the same error propagates; it also gets num_prefetch_slots and the repeated layers. A weight
  manager on another copy stream, or with another use_batched_prefetch, is refused, and the
  unattached runtime is released. A golden trace covers the attached lifecycle from setup through
  the executor's start and H0, and the recovery after an aborted forward, to teardown.
- test_dwdp_prefetch_pipeline.py: a given copy stream is used and none is created; a copy stream on
  another device is refused.
- test_dwdp_setup_lifecycle.py: an expert weight in a reserved storage is refused before the
  transport; a ring larger than the free memory is refused before any allocation, with two and with
  three slots; a page pool whose allocation fails releases every handle once.

… estimation is off

With KV-cache estimation off (TRTLLM_SKIP_KV_CACHE_ESTIMATION=1, among other cases), build_managers
sizes the final KV cache from the device memory free when it runs. Standalone dense DWDP was already
set up before it. Attached dense DWDP and expert DWDP were not: DwdpManager.setup ran after the final
KV cache was sized, so the replicated dense weights dense DWDP frees never reached the KV cache, and a
KV cache sized with a high free_gpu_memory_fraction (0.9 by default) left too little memory for dense
setup or for the expert prefetch ring, which then failed.

When the estimation is off, the creator now sets DWDP up right after try_prepare_estimation() and
before build_managers: DwdpManager.setup with expert DWDP (attached dense DWDP first, then the expert
setup), DenseDwdpManager.setup standalone. dwdp_set_up replaces dense_dwdp_set_up and skips the later
setup. Unchanged: with the estimation on, the manager is still set up before the estimation run
measures the memory.

Tests (test_dwdp_creator.py): with the estimation off, the only executor's DwdpManager is set up before
build_managers, with expert DWDP alone as with dense DWDP attached. The standalone manager is set up
once: before build_managers without the estimation, before the estimation run with it; only the
serving phase gets it, and starts its forwards with prefetch_first_layers. With dwdp_config.copy_mode
gather, the real standalone manager's SM reserve is in place when the model is built, before its
setup, and is dropped when it exits.

… its warning

A standalone launch with dwdp_config.copy_mode gather passes the gate with one warning. The warning no
longer calls the gather experimental; it names the settings the gather involves:
- the two compute-side defaults that setup applies for the gather, each unless it is set
  (fabric_gather.apply_compute_side_defaults): TRTLLM_CUTEDSL_DENSE_GEMM_SCHEDULER=clc_dynamic, so
  that the persistent dense GEMM grids do not run a second wave on the SMs the gather holds next to
  the MoE all-to-all, and TLLM_ROUTING_DISABLE_COOP_LAUNCH=1, since cooperative routing would wait
  for those SMs;
- dwdp_config.gather_kernel, which picks the gather kernel.
The gate's docstring says that the warning names them. The default, batched, gets no warning. Every
accept or reject decision stays the same.

Tests (test_dense_gate.py): a launch that breaks one of the gate's requirements is rejected with that
requirement named, one launch per requirement. Those of both modes, alternating between the modes: no
CUDA graphs, torch_compile_config, prefill CUDA graphs, sleep_config, lora_config or
speculative_config; locality domains off; pp_size 1 and cp_size 1; FABRIC peer handles. Attached
also: tp_size 1 and the overlap scheduler off. Standalone also: the MPI backend and, for copy_mode
gather, the gather op. A standalone gather launch passes with one warning naming those settings,
and every variable apply_compute_side_defaults sets is named in it with its value.

…does not divide the experts

Expert DWDP gives every rank one contiguous range of routed experts, set by two DwdpConfig scalars,
num_experts_per_worker (size) and num_prefetch_experts (stride). Setup required
(dwdp_size - 1) * stride + size == num_experts with stride <= size, so when dwdp_size does not
divide the expert count only overlapping configs passed. Kimi-K3 DWDP12 runs 82/74 and stores 88
duplicate experts per layer. The balanced partition below stores every expert once: each rank holds
7 or 8 fewer experts per MoE layer than with 82/74, memory that goes to the KV cache. The VMM does
not need equal ranges: a handle maps only whole, whatever its size. The software assumed equal
ranges in these places:
- the range formula, computed four times;
- each MoE backend, which allocated num_experts_per_worker rows;
- every peer's handle size and view rows, taken from this rank's;
- the fixup, which allgathered a small parameter only when its first dimension was
  num_experts_per_worker, so with unequal counts some ranks would skip a collective.

ExpertPartition (dwdp/specs.py) is one table of every rank's [start, end). Every rank computes it
from DwdpConfig, dwdp_size and the model's expert count N. It is the only source of any rank's
range for DwdpManager, MoE._init_dwdp_expert_layout, setup_dwdp and the transport.
- Both fields 0: balanced. With divmod(N, dwdp_size) == (base, rem), the ranks below rem store
  base + 1 experts and the others base, as _compute_ep_partition splits EP ranks (K3 DWDP12:
  8 x 75 + 4 x 74). Needs N >= dwdp_size.
- Both positive: strided, where rank r stores [r * stride, min(r * stride + size, N)). Accepted:
  - uniform: stride == size and dwdp_size * size == N;
  - redundant: stride < size and (dwdp_size - 1) * stride + size == N; the lowest rank storing an
    expert serves it;
  - capped: stride == size and (dwdp_size - 1) * size < N < dwdp_size * size; the last rank
    allocates only the experts left, with no padding.
- Anything else raises ValueError: one field set or a negative value (DwdpConfig also rejects
  these when the config is parsed), a stride larger than the size, ranges that end before N,
  overlap past N, or an empty last rank.
No config field is added. Both fields become NonNegativeInt, which the golden manifest records as
int, so the manifest and the API references are unchanged. The two field descriptions change, and
the serve JSON schemas (tensorrt_llm/schemas/trtllm-serve-config.schema.json and
trtllm-serve-disagg-config.schema.json, regenerated with scripts/generate_trtllm_serve_schemas.py)
gain minimum 0 for both. Annotations cannot express the pairing, so generate_serve_schema() mirrors
DwdpConfig._validate_expert_partition in the DwdpConfig definition: both fields 0 (or absent), or
both positive. Both schemas thus reject one field set alone or with the other at 0, as DwdpConfig
does when the config is parsed.

What reads the table:
- DwdpManager.expert_partition(N), cached per N with no collective, and local_expert_range(N).
  MoE._init_dwdp_expert_layout sizes a layer DWDP manages with exactly its rank's rows, so an
  invalid config raises at model construction, before create_weights. initial_global_assignments
  is range(N) for every partition: only a load balancer reads it, and DWDP excludes one.
- DWDPTransport.create takes the ExpertPartition. The transport allocates
  handle_geometry(expert_bytes, start, end, granularity) for the rank's range. It maps every peer's
  handle whole, with that peer's size and offset, and gives each peer view that peer's rows.
- From the handshake to the vote, setup_dwdp collects first, then decides the same way on every
  rank. A failure on one rank in that span thus raises on every rank after the same collective,
  instead of leaving its peers blocked in the next one.
  - _agree_on_partition makes one allgather: N, every rank's range, the kind, the granularity, and
    for each (layer, weight) expert chunk its rows, per-expert shape and dtype. Each rank is
    compared with the most common report, so the error names the ranks that differ, rank 0
    included (it lists at most 8 problems); a rank that sends no handshake is named too.
  - Each Phase-1 handle allgather carries (status, payload), and every rank checks the statuses
    before any import. The handles need no geometry check: every rank computes each handle's size
    and data offset with handle_geometry from what the handshake agreed on. Phase 3's Barrier
    becomes allgather(status). On POSIX_FD, Phase 2 opens each peer's pidfd inside the import, so
    that failure is reported in Phase 3 as well; a failed map or access grant releases its VA
    before the error is reported.
  - Steps 5-7 (the weight buffer and ring, the edge bytes, the weight manager) only record a local
    error. The fixup's one collective, _exchange_expert_scalars, is the group's vote. If any rank
    failed, that rank raises its own error and the others raise a RuntimeError naming it.
    Otherwise it assembles the per-expert alphas (and a per-expert gate bias) along the partition,
    and requires overlapping copies to be bitwise equal on every rank. fixup_moe_backends makes no
    collective, so K3's 184 fixup allgathers become one.
  - If a verdict collective itself fails (a peer died, the store timed out), a rank that had
    failed raises its own error, with the collective's error as its context.
  The backend fixup after the vote is local: it re-materializes the activation constants
  (install_activation_params) for the full expert count, installs the exchanged tensors, and a
  failure there raises on that rank only. A rank that dies, or fails before the handshake, leaves
  its peers waiting until the rendezvous times out.
- Removed: _validate_partition_config, _allgather_e_score_correction_bias,
  _allgather_expert_scales, _get_first_spec, WeightBuffer.compute_peer_data_offset,
  compute_peer_ranges, DWDPTransport.get_peer_ranges, and DwdpManager's start_expert_id and
  end_expert_id. Stale comments are fixed: ring pages are local NONE handles, the whole-handle rule
  applies to every VMM handle, the mapping limit, the composite-VA padding, and the edge bytes.

Per-layer parameters: _exchange_expert_scalars compares the per-layer activation pre-quant scales
(*_act_scale, e.g. an NVFP4 AWQ layer's fc31_act_scale) with rank 0's and installs rank 0's copy on
every rank, in place, as a single rank computes it from expert 0. Each rank takes that scale from
the first expert it loads and casts it to the module dtype. When the checkpoint stores the scales in
fp32, values within the loader's tolerance may round one unit in the last place apart, so two ranks'
copies may differ by one unit; a 16-bit checkpoint's copies must be bitwise equal, and other dtypes
agree within the loader's tolerance. The NVFP4 loader records the checkpoint dtype
(fc31_act_scale_checkpoint_dtype), and its tolerance becomes the named constants
PRE_QUANT_SCALE_RTOL and PRE_QUANT_SCALE_ATOL in quantization.py, which the comparison shares. The
scales are classified by name, since with one expert per rank they have a per-expert shape. Zero-dimensional per-layer scales
(fc31_input_scale, fc2_input_scale), which the alphas fold in, stay bitwise.

Layers DWDP does not manage: a MoE layer DWDP does not manage keeps its full expert table.
ConfigurableMoE decides eligibility once its backend exists (_decide_dwdp: CuTeDSL, NVFP4, no
locality domain) and sizes an eligible layer to its ExpertPartition range before the backend sync
and create_weights, then registers it. An ineligible layer is recorded with the manager
(add_unmanaged_layer), whose setup logs how many layers each reason covers; the first layer of each
backend and reason warns at once, before its experts load. The creator refuses expert DWDP unless
moe_config.backend is CUTEDSL or CUTEDSL_FC12, the backends that support DWDP (AUTO resolves to
neither for the models DWDP serves), and setup_dwdp's error for a model with no managed layer names
that setting. MoE.__init__ no longer shrinks every layer, which with the balanced default
would have left an ineligible layer (a BF16 MTP layer, a locality-domain backend) computing with
1/dwdp_size of its experts.

The collective helpers (setup_dwdp, _agree_on_partition, _exchange_expert_scalars,
DWDPTransport.create, _allgather_keeping) take a GroupComm.

Docs: MOE_DEVELOPER_GUIDE.md shows the eligibility decision and the expert setup steps, and names
ExpertPartition as the source of slot_start, slot_end and expert_size_per_partition;
docs/source/developer-guide/moe-perf-guide.md describes the accepted forms of the two partitions,
the MoE backend DWDP needs and which MoE layers it manages, when dense DWDP pays off, and how a
refused server leaves its DWDP peers waiting; its attached example drops the partition fields and
sets moe_config.backend CUTEDSL; blog19 describes num_prefetch_experts as the stride and 0/0 as the balanced default.

Compatibility: explicit size/stride configs keep the same ranges, rows, handle sizes and offsets,
peer views, ring pages, copy plans and fixup results, byte for byte. ExpertPartition.strided
accepts exactly the old validator's configs plus capped tables, so the uniform and redundant
configs of test_dwdp_aggregated.py, test_dwdp_disaggregated_serving.py and the Kimi-K3
perf-sanity configs (56/56) stay valid. For these configs only the following change: the
collectives (19 -> 15 per rank on a 3-layer model), the log wording, the point where a config
error is raised, and initial_global_assignments before the fixup (range(N), where a redundant
config had a round-robin list); ranks that disagree now raise together. 0/0, which was rejected
before (Kimi-K3 while the model is built, with an IndexError; DeepSeek-V3 in setup, after loading),
now means balanced.

Tests:
- test_dwdp_peer_ranges.py: balanced equals _compute_ep_partition. On a 60,836-config grid,
  strided accepts exactly the configs whose ranges end at N (the old validator's set) plus capped
  tables, with the strided ranges. Also covers from_config accept and reject cases, invalid
  tables, and handle_geometry equal to PageAlignedLayout.
- test_dwdp_manager.py: DwdpConfig validation; 0/0 resolved and cached per expert count; layer
  rows from _init_dwdp_expert_layout (74 on a balanced rank, 71 on the capped last rank, 82 on a
  redundant one); a config that does not fit raises at layout time. The existing range checks
  read local_expert_range and expert_partition instead of the removed start_expert_id and
  end_expert_id. ConfigurableMoE._decide_dwdp on stand-ins: an eligible layer is sized to its
  range and registered; a layer whose backend does not support DWDP, uses locality domains or is
  not NVFP4 keeps all its experts and is not registered but recorded with the manager, with one
  warning per backend and reason;
  without a DwdpManager nothing changes; MoE.__init__ alone keeps every expert.
- New test_dwdp_moe_construction_gpu.py (one GPU the CuTeDSL NVFP4 backend runs on; registered in
  l0_b200): create_moe builds real ConfigurableMoE layers while a real DwdpManager is entered, on
  each rank of a balanced DWDP group of 4 over 10 experts. The NVFP4 CuTeDSL layer stores its
  rank's range, in the wrapper's and the backend's layout and in the rows of every expert weight
  and scale, and is registered. A BF16 layer of the same model keeps all 10 experts, is recorded
  with the manager instead, and logs one warning naming its backend, the reason and the layer. A decision made
  after the backend sync or after create_weights fails it. The GPU is needed only to resolve the
  backend; nothing runs on it.
- test_prefetch_copy_plan.py: with peers of 75/74, 45/44 and 38/37 experts, every descriptor reads
  its owner's rows, the remote experts are covered once, the batched plan moves the same bytes, and
  the gather plan has one row per peer group with all of the group's bytes.
- tests/unittest/_torch/moe/test_dwdp_fixup_moe_backends.py: ported to the exchange. Every rank
  makes one allgather, and every inconsistency raises on every rank. A ConfigurableMoE-shaped
  wrapper around a backend set up by the real NVFP4CuteDslFusedMoEMethod.setup_quant_scales, on a
  4 + 3 split: after the fixup both see every expert, quant_scales holds the full alphas, and a
  full-sized gate bias stays as it is. AWQ-shaped layers: an fc31_act_scale of an fp32 checkpoint
  one unit in the last place off rank 0's ends with rank 0's bytes on every rank, in the same
  parameter; two units apart raise on every rank with the same error naming the rank; with a 16-bit
  checkpoint, or without the recorded dtype, one unit apart raises; fc31_input_scale one unit apart
  still raises; with one expert per rank fc31_act_scale stays per layer. test_moe_backend.py: the
  NVFP4 loader records fc31_act_scale's checkpoint dtype. test_dwdp_creator.py: expert DWDP with
  another MoE backend is refused before the model is built.
- test_dwdp_setup_lifecycle.py: patches the handshake, the granularity query and the vote.
- test_trtllm_serve_config_schemas.py: the serve schema accepts 0/0 and rejects a negative
  num_experts_per_worker or num_prefetch_experts; the disaggregated schema rejects a negative one
  under context_servers. test_dwdp_expert_partition_matches_runtime checks eight cases against
  DwdpConfig and both schemas, the disaggregated one at the top level and under context_servers and
  generation_servers: both absent, 0/0, 1/1 and 2/1 are accepted; one field at 1 with the other
  absent or 0 is rejected.
- New test_dwdp_setup_protocol.py (cpu_only): one thread per rank runs the real setup_dwdp over
  StoreDwdpGroup on a HashStore, with a fake VMM that maps handles only whole. The weight buffer,
  edge-byte fill and weight manager are stand-ins; those of the buffer and the manager record
  their arguments.
  - Every peer is mapped with its own size and rows (balanced, capped, uniform, redundant),
    steps 5-7 get the partition's local range and peer ranges, and the exchange gives every rank
    the full fc31_alpha (from 75/74 shards on the balanced DWDP12).
  - A failure on one rank raises on every rank after the same collective, and nothing leaks.
    Covered failures: the handshake (rows, partition, dtype), an export, the access grant of an
    imported handle, and the ring.
  - When rank 0 alone computed another partition, the handshake error names rank 0.

…kipped iteration rolls it back

With KV cache manager V2, a separate draft KV cache and attention DP, KVCacheV2Scheduler admits the
draft pool's mirror while it schedules the attention-DP pad dummy (_admit_unpaired_draft ->
admit_mirror): a fresh, empty draft cache under the reused ATTENTION_DP_DUMMY_REQUEST_ID. When a peer
rank schedules nothing, the iteration is not queued and _finalize_adp_dummy_allocation rolls the dummy
back before prepare_resources. It freed the dummy in the KV cache manager and the speculative resource
manager, but not in the draft KV cache manager, so the empty mirror outlived the dummy. On the next
queued iteration, the deferred previous batch, which still holds the earlier, finished dummy with the
same ID, reaches the draft pool's update_resources, which resizes that empty cache to the old dummy's
history and raises "History length cannot exceed capacity". A disaggregated DSpark generation server
(overlap scheduler, attention DP) crashed this way one iteration after a skipped one.

The rollback now also frees the dummy in the draft KV cache manager when KV cache manager V2 is used.

Tests:
- test_kv_cache_v2_adp_dummy_draft_rollback.py: with stand-in managers, a rolled-back dummy releases its
  draft mirror and a queued dummy keeps it (CPU); with real V2 target and draft pools and the V2
  scheduler, a skipped iteration followed by the deferred previous batch no longer raises (GPU,
  registered in l0_a10).

…dwdp_fabric_gather

dwdp_config.gather_kernel reached the gather launcher through the process environment:
fabric_gather.select_kernel wrote TRTLLM_DWDP_GATHER_KERNEL before the first gather, and the
launcher read it once per process into a function-local static. A later DWDP instance in the same
process (under trtllm-llmapi-launch, the MPI pool outlives an LLM) that asked for another kernel kept
running the first one, while a warning said its choice overrode the environment, and the variable
was never restored.

trtllm::dwdp_fabric_gather now takes the kernel as an argument of each launch: invokeDwdpFabricGather
and the op take use_tma (the schema gains bool use_tma=False, so six-argument calls keep the register
kernel), and the static is gone. A device without the TMA kernel's requirements still takes the
register kernel, with one warning. Each manager resolves the kernel once with fabric_gather.use_tma
(gather_kernel; else the deprecated TRTLLM_DWDP_GATHER_KERNEL, reported as deprecated; a
gather_kernel that overrides a different value of it is warned about; the environment is only read),
and every launch of its gather passes it:
- DwdpManager hands it to setup_dwdp, whose DWDPWeightManager passes it to each expert gather, and to
  the attached dense transfer. The check after the expert setup compares it with the weight
  manager's, as it compares the copy stream and the transfer.
- DenseDwdpManager builds its standalone transfer with it (StandaloneTransfer.use_tma).
- DenseTransfer gains use_tma, which _copy_launcher passes to DenseCopyLauncher for every dense
  gather.
select_kernel is removed.

Tests:
- test_fabric_gather.py: use_tma takes gather_kernel over the environment, with the override
  warning; the environment alone applies and is reported as deprecated; register when nothing is
  set; the environment is never written.
- test_dwdp_manager.py: gather_kernel is resolved once, only with the gather, and reaches
  setup_dwdp; a weight manager whose kernel differs from the attached transfer's is refused, like
  one on another copy stream.
- test_dense_executor.py: the transfer standalone setup builds carries the kernel gather_kernel
  picks (the deprecated variable while it is unset), and the environment is unchanged.
- test_dwdp_prefetch_gpu.py: on one GPU, register, tma and register launches in one process each
  copy every byte and run the kernel they name, as the profiler records it (the TMA kernel where the
  device meets its requirements, else the register kernel); the peer-GPU gather of the expert
  prefetch runs with both kernels.
- test_dense_setup.py: the stand-in transfer has use_tma.

The dense DWDP gate checked, on every worker after the MPI ranks had been spawned, rules that
depend only on the LLM arguments, and the creator's DWDP block checked expert DWDP's rules the
same way. A launch they refuse was accepted by LLM(), trtllm-serve and both serve schemas, and
then failed on every rank. TorchLlmArgs.validate_dwdp_launch now refuses it when the arguments are
built:

* expert DWDP (moved from the creator): dwdp_size > 1; pipeline and context parallel size 1;
  tensor parallel size 1 or attention DP; no CUDA graphs.
* dense DWDP (moved from the gate): attached, tensor parallel size 1 and the overlap scheduler
  off; standalone, attention DP with tensor parallel size > 1; in both, eager execution (no CUDA
  graphs, torch.compile or prefill CUDA graphs), no sleep, LoRA or speculative config, locality
  domains off, and pipeline and context parallel size 1.

The gate keeps what only a worker can tell (FABRIC peer handles; for a standalone launch the MPI
backend and the gather op) and picks the mode; the creator keeps the MoE backend check, which has
to follow the model defaults. The serve schema generator mirrors the rules as if/then rules on the
values a YAML sets, at the top level and in each server block of a disaggregated configuration; a
field left unset may come from the command line or the top level, so runtime validation decides.

Tests: test_llm_args.py TestDwdpLaunch covers every rule, and that building the arguments runs
them; test_dense_gate.py keeps the host checks; test_trtllm_serve_config_schemas.py checks that
both schemas refuse what the validator refuses and leave unset fields to runtime.
