[TRTLLM-17337][infra] Schedule post-merge perf-sanity by build ID; skip it in PR --post-merge runs - #21010
POST_MERGE_STAGE_BUILD_INTERVALS schedules matching stages by build number. Explicitly requested stages remain selected, and pre-merge /bot run --post-merge runs skip post-merge perf-sanity stages by default. Other pipelines retain their stages. Review severity counts are unavailable because no current review findings were supplied.
QA Engineer Review
The change modifies tests/integration/defs/perf/README_test_perf_sanity.md, but adds no test code or test-list entries. The README describes the alternating schedule for disaggregated e2e and gen_only stages and PR opt-in behavior. The PR objectives report local harness checks, 227 passing tests, and passing pre-commit checks; these results are not independently verified here. No CI test covers post-merge stage selection, so coverage verdict: needs follow-up.
Per-File QA Perspective
jenkins/L0_Test.groovy: Verify interval validation, pattern matching, build-number scheduling, explicit-stage exemptions, and the order of stage-selection filters. Verify behavior when the build number is invalid or absent.
jenkins/L0_MergeRequest.groovy: Verify that the official post-merge build number reaches the scheduler and that non-official /bot run --post-merge requests skip post-merge perf-sanity stages by default.
docs/source/developer-guide/ci-overview.md: Verify that the documented schedule and PR opt-in behavior match pipeline behavior.
tests/integration/defs/perf/README_test_perf_sanity.md: Verify that the documented alternating schedule matches stage selection. This documentation change does not add automated tests or change CI/manual-QA lists.
.github/workflows/bot-command.yml: Verify that the /bot help text correctly describes the default omission of post-merge perf-sanity stages and the explicit selection options.
Description
Every post-merge build runs every perf-sanity stage, and a PR's /bot run --post-merge runs them all as well. The expensive ones are the 19 multi-node disaggregated stages, which hold the disagg e2e and disagg gen_only tests. Each takes 2 to 14 GB200/GB300 nodes, 132 nodes per build in total.
This PR does two things:
Official post-merge pipeline: perf-sanity stages run by build ID and a configurable frequency. The 19 disagg stages now run once every 2 builds. The lighter tests keep running on every build: ctx_only, gen_only without a context server (gen_only_no_context), standard aggregated, VisualGen and the module-level host-perf tests.
A PR's /bot run --post-merge: runs no post-merge perf-sanity stage, i.e. no stage whose name contains both PerfSanity and Post-Merge; there are 38 today. The pre-merge perf gate GB300-4_GPUs-PyTorch-PerfSanity-1 still runs, exactly as in a plain /bot run. A stage named with --stage-list or --extra-stage still runs.
Mechanism
Configuration.POST_MERGE_STAGE_BUILD_INTERVALS in jenkins/L0_Test.groovy maps a stage-name pattern to N. Patterns are exact names or * wildcards, with the same syntax as --stage-list. This PR sets one entry, "*-Disagg-PerfSanity-*-Post-Merge-*": 2. A stage that matches no pattern runs on every build. If several patterns match, the first one applies.
Build ID. This is the BUILD_NUMBER of the official post-merge job (L0_PostMerge). L0_MergeRequest.groovy passes it to all four L0_Test jobs as the new post_merge_build_number global var, so they all pick the same stages. OpenSearch already stores this number as s_job_id on every perf-sanity record of the build.
Schedule. Split k of a matching stage runs on the post-merge builds where BUILD_NUMBER % N == (k - 1) % N. With N = 2, ...-Post-Merge-1 (and -3) runs on even builds and ...-Post-Merge-2 runs on odd builds.
PR --post-merge runs.L0_MergeRequest.groovy sets the new skip_post_merge_perf_sanity test filter only when the job is not the post-merge job and --post-merge was requested. L0_Test then drops every selected stage named *PerfSanity* + *Post-Merge*.
TRT dependency testing is unaffected, as is any other pipeline.
If the flag is ever missing, nothing is dropped.
Where the filters sit. Both filters are the last stage-selection steps in launchTestJobs, so no later step can bring a dropped stage back.
Stages named explicitly with --stage-list or --extra-stage always run.
Only the official post-merge pipeline is throttled by build number.
Logging and validation. The log lists every dropped stage; build-interval skips also give the build each stage runs on next. Every pipeline, pre-merge included, validates the interval map. A non-positive N fails the pipeline; a pattern that matches no declared stage only logs a warning.
Why the splits alternate instead of running all disagg stages on the same builds
Even load. Each post-merge build gets a similar multi-node load: 73 nodes on even builds and 59 on odd builds, instead of 132 on one and 0 on the next.
Checkpoint-I/O experiment. The post-merge checkpoint-I/O experiment ([#19169][test] Balance post-merge checkpoint I/O experiment arms #19170) also picks its arm by build parity (even → native, odd → auto), and it asks that even and odd builds stay comparable. Putting the whole disagg load on one parity would break that.
Side effect. Each disagg test that takes part in the experiment now always gets the same arm: split-1 tests always run native and split-2 tests always run auto. Every-build tests keep the 50/50 alternation.
Effect on regression detection
Baselines. The post-merge regression check compares each run with the last 90 days of post-merge history (QUERY_LOOKBACK_DAYS). It keeps working with half as many points for the disagg tests.
Detection window. A disagg regression now shows up within 2 builds, and the range of suspect commits covers 2 builds.
On demand. To measure a post-merge perf-sanity stage on a PR, name it, e.g. /bot run --stage-list "<stage>" or /bot run --post-merge --extra-stage "<stage>".
Breakdown: post-merge run frequency of each stage and test
Tests are perf/test_perf_sanity.py::test_e2e[...], or perf/test_visual_gen_perf_sanity.py::test_visual_gen_e2e[...] for VisualGen. "Nodes" is the stage's node count.
CI assigns tests to the -k splits with pytest-split's least_duration algorithm over tests/integration/defs/.test_durations. The split membership below was computed at this PR's base commit with jenkins/scripts/perf/submit.py's copy of that algorithm. A later update to .test_durations can swap two tests between splits, which also swaps their even/odd builds.
A PR's /bot run --post-merge runs none of the ...-Post-Merge-... stages below. It does run GB300-4_GPUs-PyTorch-PerfSanity-1 and the module-level tests, as a plain /bot run does.
No CI test covers post-merge stage selection, so I validated the change locally with Groovy 2.4.21 (the Groovy line Jenkins runs); the harnesses are not committed.
each disagg stage runs exactly once in any two consecutive builds;
the "next on build #" log value is the next build that runs the stage;
--stage-list / --extra-stage keep the stages they name;
a missing or malformed build number keeps every stage;
validation rejects the intervals 0, -1, 'two' and 1.5, and warns about a pattern that matches nothing;
N = 3 and the first-match rule behave as documented;
with skip_post_merge_perf_sanity set, exactly the 38 *PerfSanity* + *Post-Merge* stages are dropped, GB300-4_GPUs-PyTorch-PerfSanity-1 is kept, explicitly named stages are kept, and with the flag unset nothing is dropped.
Real launchTestJobs(), with Jenkins steps stubbed:
SBSA post-merge selects 59 stages without a build number;
build Update README.md #1001 selects 48: it drops exactly the 11 -Post-Merge-1 / -3 disagg stages;
SBSA pre-merge (4 stages) and x86_64 post-merge (96 stages) are unchanged;
a PR --post-merge run selects 25 SBSA stages (it drops the 34 SBSA post-merge perf-sanity stages but keeps GB300-4_GPUs-PyTorch-PerfSanity-1 and the functional post-merge stages) and 92 x86_64 stages (it drops 4);
--post-merge --extra-stage "<disagg stage>" keeps that stage.
Existing tests.tests/unittest/tools/test_infra_dry_run_pipeline.py, tests/unittest/tools/test_test_to_stage_mapping.py and tests/unittest/scripts/cbts/test_docs.py: 227 passed. CBTS's parse_stages_from_groovy and scripts/test_to_stage_mapping.py read the same 120 stages before and after the change.
pre-commit passes on the changed files.
In CI, a plain /bot run exercises the map validation and both filters' no-op paths, and a /bot run --post-merge exercises the perf-sanity skip, which logs /bot run --post-merge skips <K> post-merge perf-sanity stage(s). The throttling path first runs on the official post-merge pipeline after merge, where the L0_Test-SBSA-* logs print Post-merge build #<N> skips <K> stage(s) that are not due.

Add POST_MERGE_STAGE_BUILD_INTERVALS to jenkins/L0_Test.groovy. A stage
that matches one of its patterns runs on every N-th official post-merge
build instead of on every build. L0_MergeRequest.groovy passes the
post-merge pipeline's BUILD_NUMBER to every L0_Test job, so all of them
pick the same stages: split k runs on the builds whose
BUILD_NUMBER % N == (k - 1) % N. Stages named with --stage-list or
--extra-stage, and every pipeline other than the official post-merge
one, are not throttled.
Run the multi-node disaggregated perf-sanity stages (disagg e2e and
gen_only tests) every 2 builds. The ctx_only, gen_only_no_context,
aggregated, VisualGen and module-level perf tests still run on every
build.

Post-merge jobs pass their build number to L0_Test, which filters selected stages by configured intervals. Pre-merge /bot run --post-merge runs skip post-merge perf-sanity stages unless explicitly selected. The documentation describes these rules.

Summary
Pass build and filter values jenkins/L0_MergeRequest.groovy, jenkins/L0_Test.groovy
L0_MergeRequest passes the official PostMerge build number, or null, to L0_Test. It sets a test filter to skip post-merge perf-sanity stages for qualifying pre-merge bot runs.
L0_Test validates interval configuration and filters selected stages by build number and split phase. It preserves explicitly selected stages and skips post-merge perf-sanity stages for qualifying runs.
Describe scheduling and bot selection docs/source/developer-guide/ci-overview.md, tests/integration/defs/perf/README_test_perf_sanity.md, .github/workflows/bot-command.yml
The documentation and bot help describe the interval schedule, the post-merge perf-sanity default exclusion, and the options for explicitly selecting those stages.

A pre-merge pipeline run with `/bot run --post-merge` still adds the
post-merge stages, but no longer the post-merge perf-sanity ones (stage
names containing both PerfSanity and Post-Merge). Only the official
post-merge pipeline runs those, on the builds that
POST_MERGE_STAGE_BUILD_INTERVALS schedules. The pre-merge perf-sanity
stage runs as in a plain /bot run, and a stage named with --stage-list
or --extra-stage still runs.
L0_MergeRequest.groovy sets the new skip_post_merge_perf_sanity test
filter only for a job that is not the post-merge job and requested
--post-merge, so every other pipeline keeps its stages.

Add executable coverage for the scheduling contract if CI protection is intended.
The PR changes executable stage-selection logic but adds no test code or test-list entry. The reported local harness covers the behavior. Add focused cases for even and odd builds, explicit selector overrides, and unaffected stages, then register the test in the appropriate tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/ list if CI protection is required.
Coverage summary: no test files or test cases changed; local coverage is reported, but CI coverage is absent. Coverage needs follow-up if this contract must be protected in CI.
