No actionable comments were generated in the recent review. WalkthroughThe change adds typed checkpoint and I/O policy contracts. It moves model weight loading into weight-source implementations and adds checkpoint, dummy, vision-only, MX, and GMS sources with shared loading hooks and qualification logic. 623-661: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winAdd a dispatch test for
select_weight_sourcetogether withModelLoader.load.
ModelLoader.load()now chooses the whole loading path throughselect_weight_source(). The GMS and MX tests cover their own sources. This PR does not show a test for the other branches:
LoadFormat.DUMMYselectsDummyWeightSource.LoadFormat.VISION_ONLYselectsVisionOnlyWeightSource.LoadFormat.AUTOwith a non-MX loader selectsCheckpointWeightSource.- An unknown format raises
NotImplementedError.Without such a test, a regression can go unnoticed. For example, DUMMY could silently route to the checkpoint source, or the dummy mapper could stop being initialized, which breaks
reload(). Add a small parametrized CPU test intests/unittest/_torch/executor/. It builds aWeightLoadContextwithSimpleNamespace(load_format=...)and a stub loader that hascheckpoint_format, then asserts the returned source type.As per path instructions: "A new or changed ... runtime behavior ... with no meaningful test."

Reviewed PR#20712 and PR#20713 in combined. Please document the custom-loader hook removal and migration path.
I suggest we consolidate the 2 PRs into 1, or focus on merging PR#20713 directly.

Use a new str enum CheckpointFormat for built-in checkpoint formats like "HF", "MX" and "mistral". Custom 3rd-party formats are still accepted as str. This improves code readability and maintenance. Signed-off-by: Yijing Li <257409031+yijingl-nvidia@users.noreply.github.com>
tighten function parameter load_format type range from LoadFormat | str to LoadFormat. This is dead code as the upstream functions don't use checkpoint loading helper functions with str load formats. Signed-off-by: Yijing Li <257409031+yijingl-nvidia@users.noreply.github.com>
Refactor the function that generates checkpoint io policy fallback/error reason so it's easier for humans to read. Description
This PR removes four hooks that only ModelExpress (MX) uses from
BaseCheckpointLoader, the base class of all checkpoint loaders:is_weights_preloaded(),is_post_transform_weights_preloaded(),post_load_apply()andpost_load_publish().No functional change for the checkpoint loaders in this repository.
The GMS and MX load code of #20711 now checks for
MXCheckpointLoaderand calls the MX methods on it directly. A smaller base class is easier to implement for new checkpoint formats, and it improves code readability and maintenance. The four methods were added for MX in #13531. No other checkpoint loader in this repository implements them, and no doc describes them. After this PR, the load code calls them only on
MXCheckpointLoader. If a custom checkpoint loader overrides them, the load code no longer calls these overrides, and no other hook replaces them. If a new loader needs such a hook, add it toBaseCheckpointLoaderin that loader's PR.This PR must merge after #20711. Its branch contains the commits of #20498, #20703 and #20711. Review only the last commit: https://github.com/NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM/pull/20713/files/0c49500a2ac2f2133c94f90381a55a19db8e5984..fc912b037fe9531d240c4048cb64c8c922952e99
Until #20498 and #20703 merge, the API compatibility label check fails, because this branch contains their API changes.
The latest push replaces the content of this PR. The split of
ModelLoader.load()into load strategies is now part of #20711, with plain functions instead of load-strategy classes. This PR keeps only the removal of the MX-only hooks.Test Coverage
