Background

Issue #11083 - Context-aware defaults for LLM API.

Solution

Added apply_early_model_defaults() in llm_utils.py - pure-Python two-stage loading.

Testing

9 mock tests added (all pass).

Dev Engineer Review

apply_early_model_defaults() reads local config.json, resolves the first architecture through the PyTorch model registry, and applies model defaults before weight loading. It skips non-TorchLlmArgs inputs and returns an empty dictionary for invalid or missing configuration, unresolved classes, absent defaults, or caught lookup and application errors.

apply_model_defaults_to_llm_args() preserves nested Pydantic model identities and restores their original fields-set state. This prevents applied defaults from being marked as user-set values. The supplied diff also reformats imports and does not show changes to the early-defaults implementation.

QA Engineer Review

No test changes.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/llmapi/llm_utils.py: Verify that PyTorch model defaults appear on llm.args after model resolution, while user-set fields remain unchanged. Also verify fallback behavior for missing or malformed config.json and preservation of nested Pydantic fields-set state.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change adds and exports apply_early_model_defaults. The PyTorch loader calls it after updating quantization configuration. The helper resolves defaults from config.json and applies them to TorchLlmArgs. Defaults application preserves nested Pydantic model identities and field-set state.

Changes

PyTorch model defaults

Layer / File(s) Summary
Preserve nested model state
tensorrt_llm/llmapi/llm_utils.py
Defaults application copies values into existing nested Pydantic models and restores their recursively captured __pydantic_fields_set__ values.
Resolve and apply model defaults
tensorrt_llm/llmapi/llm_utils.py
CachedModelLoader calls the exported apply_early_model_defaults for the PyTorch backend. The helper reads the first architecture in config.json, resolves its registered model class, and applies available defaults. It returns an empty dictionary when the arguments, configuration, architecture, class, defaults, or application step are unavailable.

Pushed fixes addressing the CodeRabbit review feedback:

Issue 1 (config validation + D205) — apply_early_model_defaults:

  • Added isinstance(hf_config, dict) guard before .get(), so config.json='[]', null or other non-object JSON falls back gracefully instead of raising AttributeError.
  • Replaced the loose architectures or [] with isinstance(list) + nonempty + all(str) validation. Non-string entries (dicts, unhashables) now hit the 'no valid architectures' return path.
  • Fixed Ruff D205 by collapsing the multi-line docstring summary to a single line.

Issue 2 (preserve unset fields) — apply_model_defaults_to_llm_args:

  • Recursively snapshots __pydantic_fields_set__ (top level + all nested Pydantic models) before mutation.
  • After the merge+setattr loop, restores the original 'explicitly set' state in-place so model_dump(exclude_unset=True) continues to distinguish user-set fields from model-applied defaults.
  • Handles nested Pydantic models by doing a field-by-field deep copy (preserving object identity) before restoring the captured fields_set.
  • Regression scenario verified: executor's second defaults pass can now override values set by early defaults for fields the user never explicitly set.

Add a regression test for nested KvCacheConfig identity.

The existing tests exercise nested default application, but they do not assert that the user-provided KvCacheConfig remains the same object. A replacement would therefore go unnoticed. Add a CPU-only test in tests/unittest/llmapi/test_llm_args.py that retains the original config, applies a nested default, and asserts both the default and object identity:

original_kv_cache_config = KvCacheConfig(enable_block_reuse=True)
llm_args = TorchLlmArgs(model="/tmp/dummy_model",
                        kv_cache_config=original_kv_cache_config)

apply_model_defaults_to_llm_args(
    llm_args, {"kv_cache_config": {"max_tokens": 1024}})

assert llm_args.kv_cache_config.max_tokens == 1024
assert llm_args.kv_cache_config is original_kv_cache_config

Identity is material here because _restore_pydantic_fields_set matches nested snapshots by object identity.

Test early defaults before executor construction.

The current TestPyTorchBackendModelDefaults tests inspect arguments only after TorchLLM constructs the executor. Add a CPU-only test in tests/unittest/llmapi/test_llm_args.py that writes a temporary config.json, registers a mock model, calls apply_early_model_defaults, and checks TorchLlmArgs immediately. Otherwise, the later load_config_and_apply_defaults pass can populate the same values while a broken early pass remains undetected.

Asthenia0412 force-pushed the feat/context-aware-llmapi-defaults branch from a945244 to b150fa8 Compare October 17, 2026 13:37
Add apply_early_model_defaults() to tensorrt_llm.llmapi.llm_utils and invoke it
from CachedModelLoader after HF model download but before weight loading.

Changes:
- New helper apply_early_model_defaults(model_dir, llm_args) reads only the
  on-disk config.json (pure Python, no GPU required), resolves the model class
  via get_registered_model_class(config.architectures[0]), and applies
  model_class.get_model_defaults() overrides through the existing
  apply_model_defaults_to_llm_args merge (which honors Pydantic's model_fields_set
  so user-explicit values are never clobbered).
- CachedModelLoader.__call__ invokes the new helper when backend == 'pytorch',
  immediately after _update_from_hf_quant_config(). This surfaces model-aware
  defaults in llm.args before LLM construction completes — two-stage loading.
- The richer second pass in ModelLoader.load_config_and_apply_defaults (run
  during executor creation, GPU-dependent) continues to run unchanged: this
  early preload is additive.
- Never raises on missing/unknown/bad config.json: malformed checkpoints
  fall back silently so LLM construction is never crashed by this hook.
