[#13957][feat] Add pipelined PyExecutor scheduler loop (enable_pipelined_scheduler) - #20416
Asthenia0412 wants to merge 6 commits into
Conversation
…pipelined_scheduler) Replace the single-thread, 1-step overlap scheduler with an opt-in 2-batch pipelined loop: a dedicated worker thread dispatches forward + sample for the newest scheduled batch while the main thread schedules the next batch and drains the oldest batch's results, closing the host-side GPU-idle gap between iterations. Gated behind enable_pipelined_scheduler (default False) on TorchLlmArgs, restricted to configs without spec decode, disaggregated serving, guided decoding, attention-DP, multimodal encoder scheduling, encoder-decoder models, or pipeline parallelism; falls back to the existing overlap scheduler otherwise. Plain tensor parallelism is supported since all scheduling collectives stay on the main thread. Implements the design proposed in issue NVIDIA#13957, modeled on vLLM v1's step_with_batch_queue and adapted from the earlier closed PR NVIDIA#15841. …loop Add _wait_for_model_engine_input_copy() call before scheduling (matching overlap loop's V2 page-table safety), and disagg.handle_timeouts_synced() plus _flush_iter_stats_synced() drain calls (rank-symmetric companion to overlap loop) for a more complete pipelined implementation. 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
This change adds no tests for the new executor loop.
No test covers _is_pipelined_loop_eligible, the fallback path in validate_pipelined_scheduler, or _executor_loop_pipelined. Without tests, the following defects would not be caught:
- Wrong output from cross-thread state races.
- Paused requests that are never handled.
- A broken shutdown or drain path.
Add these tests:
- A CPU unit test in
tests/unittest/llmapi/that checks the validator falls back to the overlap scheduler for each blocking feature. - A GPU test in
tests/unittest/_torch/executor/that compares greedy outputs of the pipelined loop and the overlap loop, with chunked prefill on and a small KV cache.
Register the GPU test in a CI list under tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/, for example l0_h100.yml. Repository rules ask for this: "it must be included in at least one CI test list".

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
The worker thread mutates request state that the main-thread scheduler reads at the same time.
_update_request_states runs on the worker thread. It calls move_to_next_context_chunk() and updates py_last_context_chunk, state and _release_multimodal_resources for context requests. Meanwhile, the main thread runs _prepare_and_schedule_batch for the next batch. That call reads context_current_position, state and context_chunk_size on the same LlmRequest objects from active_requests.
The docstring says this is safe because the call only touches context_requests. That claim is not correct when chunked prefill is enabled. A request that is mid-prefill in the in-flight batch is also a scheduling candidate on the main thread. The scheduler can then read a chunk position that is half-updated or out of date, and it can schedule the same chunk twice.
_forward_step and _sample_async add a second problem. On an exception, they call _handle_errors from the worker thread. _handle_errors clears active_requests, drains the queues and enqueues responses while the main thread iterates the same structures.
Fix: run _update_request_states on the main thread. Run it after submit returns, after the worker has consumed the inputs, or at drain time. Also return errors from the worker as values, and call _handle_errors from the main thread.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
The KV pool rebalance can run while worker forwards are still in flight.
_maybe_rebalance_kv_pools uses _consume_previous_batch_for_rebalance to reach quiescence. That method only drains self.previous_batch, which is always None in this loop. The pipeline can still hold a slot whose worker forward has not finished. In that state, suspend_request and adjust() move pages that an active forward is reading.
This call is also missing the self._is_kv_manager_v2 guard that the other two loops use. With enable_kv_pool_rebalance=True on a V1 manager, it dereferences kv_cache_manager.impl.need_adjustment.
Fix: drain every slot in pipeline before a rebalance. Alternatively, exclude enable_kv_pool_rebalance in _is_pipelined_loop_eligible.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Paused and recompute-paused requests are never handled.
_executor_loop_overlap calls _terminate_requests and _pause_requests for paused_requests on V1. On V2 it calls _terminate_recompute_paused_requests and _pause_recompute_paused_requests. This loop calls none of them.
Under KV pressure, the scheduler evicts requests. Those requests keep their KV blocks and are never reset for recompute, so they can stall or leak capacity. The loop also skips _release_unused_connector_reservations and _finalize_adp_dummy_allocation. Those two calls are less important here because their features are excluded.
Fix: add the same pause handling that the overlap loop uses, after _can_queue.

Iteration stats always report num_new_active_requests = 0.
_init_iter_stats_if_sampled builds the record with 0 new requests and adds the real count to _pending_num_new_active_requests. The other loops transfer that count with _take_pending_new_active_requests(iter_stats) when they queue the batch. This loop passes iter_stats directly, so the count is never transferred.

A normal shutdown does not set _event_loop_completed or flush buffered responses.
The other loops call _flush_pending_transfer_responses() and set self._event_loop_completed = True at their normal-exit break. This loop does neither. As a result, _event_loop_wrapper classifies any teardown exception as a crash and arms the cross-rank hard kill.

Invoke the real loop-selection path in these tests.
This test only assigns MagicMock attributes. It never invokes loop selection or asserts which loop ran. The following ineligible test also has no invocation or assertion. Both pass if dispatch always selects the wrong loop. Call the selection entrypoint with controlled eligibility and assert the selected loop in each case. As per path instructions, tests that can silently pass without exercising their claimed behavior need an observable assertion.

Background
PyExecutor._executor_loop_overlap single-thread 1-step lookahead scheduler 在高并发 decode 场景下,per-iter host 开销与 GPU 开销相当,导致 GPU 空转 ~580µs/iter。
Problem
Single-threaded executor loop cannot overlap host scheduling + dispatch with GPU forward.
Solution
Opt-in 2-batch pipelined executor loop (enable_pipelined_scheduler):
Testing
新增 test_py_executor_pipelined_scheduler.py (200+ lines, 19 test cases):

Dev Engineer Review
The change adds an opt-in, two-batch
PyExecutorloop. The main thread schedules work and drains completed batches in order. A worker thread runs forward and sample dispatch, with CUDA events coordinating resource staging and forward work. Unsupported configurations use the existing overlap or standard loop.TorchLlmArgs.enable_pipelined_schedulerdefaults toFalse, and the API reference lists the option. Review the final worker-future drain: the implementation reportedly ignores exceptions raised during shutdown. The reported throughput improvement remains unvalidated.QA Engineer Review
The added unit test file covers eligibility blockers, pipeline data-class values, validator behavior, and loop selection. The dispatch tests invoke the actual eligibility gate but mirror the loop-selection branch; they do not exercise dispatch through
PyExecutorinitialization. No matching entry was found intests/integration/test_lists/for this test file. Test execution results are not provided, so coverage needs follow-up. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up.Per-File QA Perspective
tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/py_executor.py: Verify scheduling, ordered result draining, fallback selection, CUDA event synchronization, and worker shutdown behavior, including exceptions during the final drain.tensorrt_llm/llmapi/llm_args.py: Verify the new option defaults toFalseand is disabled with unsupported configurations.tests/unittest/api_stability/references/llm.yaml: Verify the API reference matches the option name, type, default, and prototype status.tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_py_executor_pipelined_scheduler.py: Covers eligibility, validator blockers and warnings, pipeline data classes, and loop-selection cases. No integration test-list entry was found; run the tests and verify dispatch through executor initialization.
