63-67: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winAdd regression coverage for tier validation at config construction.
The native
KVCacheManagerConfigconstructor now validates every tier. Zero quotas and invalid disk paths therefore fail beforeKVCacheManageris created. Existing tests cover an empty tier list and valid tier configurations, but they do not pin the new tier failures or their Python exception type. Add focused tests for zero quotas and a missing disk directory. Define the expected exception consistently for both backends if the tests are shared.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Batch metadata publication allocates pinned staging buffers of arbitrary byte counts through HostMem(size_t), which the granularity check in the HostMem constructor rejects. The single-size constructor now rounds the request up to HostMem::kAlignment. Signed-off-by: Yao Yao <lowsfer@users.noreply.github.com>
HostMem::~HostMem() ran destroy() inside KVCM2_POISON_ON_EXCEPT, which skips the callable once KVCM2 is poisoned. destroy() was the only path that joined mFillWorker, so destroying a HostMem after poisoning destroyed a joinable std::thread and terminated the process. The destructor now joins the worker before the poison guard. Signed-off-by: Yao Yao <lowsfer@users.noreply.github.com>
A host tier that could not be built was dropped and the manager rebuilt without it, so the job ran on a cache other than the one asked for and said so only in a log line. Capacity planning, benchmark numbers and the performance profile all quietly stopped describing the configuration. Progressive fill makes the old behaviour unreachable in any case: a commit that fails after construction surfaces at the first host-slot allocation, long past the point where the tier could be dropped. Initialization failures are now reported to every rank through the existing allreduce, so one rank's failure stops them all rather than leaving the rest to hang on the next collective. Signed-off-by: Yao Yao <lowsfer@users.noreply.github.com>
Cleanup is skipped once KVCM2 is poisoned, including the waits that let a range's CUDA consumers finish with it. Releasing the backing anyway unmaps memory a copy may still be reading, and the fault that follows lands somewhere unrelated, which buries the violation the latch had recorded. Both backings now decide this for themselves, so the range outlives the object while the object itself is still freed. The cuMem calls behind the VMM backing are checked rather than discarded: a driver that disagrees about what is owned is a broken invariant, not something to pass over in silence. Signed-off-by: Yao Yao <lowsfer@users.noreply.github.com>
Every pool group is allocated at least one commit unit, so a level with two of them cannot be built below two units however small the quota is. A maximum under that total was accepted: the quota was raised to the minimum at construction and then sat above the maximum, leaving the level unable to resize to the size it reported. Checked for every cold level before any is built, so a rejection does not leave earlier levels allocated, and the message names the field alongside the minimum and the per-pool unit. Signed-off-by: Yao Yao <lowsfer@users.noreply.github.com>
cudaMemset is asynchronous with respect to the host for device memory and goes to the legacy NULL stream, which does not implicitly synchronize with the cudaStreamNonBlocking stream the offload runs on. The slots were freshly allocated, so their readyEvent was null and the migration waited on nothing: the offload was free to read the pages before the fills landed, and the restore then compared against stale bytes. Seen once under ten concurrent test binaries, failing both pages at once, which is the signature of a lost ordering rather than a torn copy. The sibling case in kvCacheManagerV2ColdPageTest describes the same hazard and issues its fill on the migration stream; this was the last plain cudaMemset in these suites. Signed-off-by: Yao Yao <lowsfer@users.noreply.github.com>
Collapse the host-memory backing onto a single implementation that populates pages through the kernel and hands them to the driver with cuMemHostRegister, and drop the virtual IHostMemBacking interface along with the factory functions and the backing-kind selection that existed to choose between implementations. Staging buffers and upload batches no longer go through HostMem. They are sized once and released once, so they use the new StaticHostMem: a single cuMemHostAlloc, one registration, no fill worker or watermark. A copy may therefore span the whole range. Commit units are a multiple of the slot size so a copy never crosses a registration boundary, while mprotect and madvise operate on page ranges rounded outward on commit and inward on decommit. Signed-off-by: Yao Yao <lowsfer@users.noreply.github.com>
TLLM_KV_CACHE_MANAGER_V2_THP now defaults off, so the tier is populated with ordinary pages unless the variable is set to 1. MADV_HUGEPAGE opts a region's faults into direct compaction wherever /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/defrag is "madvise" or "always". What that costs depends on how fragmented the node's free memory is, and the two nodes of one machine can differ by an order of magnitude. Filling 32 GiB on each of eight ranks, on a node with ~29600 free order-9 blocks huge pages gave 4.6 GiB/s against 3.0 without; on a node with ~330 they gave 0.32 against 2.5. Since every rank must finish before the system serves, the figure that matters is the slowest: 100 s with huge pages, 13 s without. Fragmentation accumulates with uptime while the benefit does not, so the penalty is the one that grows. Ordinary pages bound the worst case at 1.6x off ideal rather than 7.8x. Transfer bandwidth does not pay for it: over a registered region host-to-device is PCIe-bound and identical either way, and device-to-host is no slower. Pinned memory from cudaHostAlloc reports no huge pages at all, so this also makes the tier consistent with every other pinned buffer rather than exceptional. The disaggregated test harness already set the variable to 0 after hitting this on CI nodes (nvbugs/6888251). Signed-off-by: Yao Yao <lowsfer@users.noreply.github.com>

Two tests leave a KVCacheManagerV2 reachable only through a reference cycle, so reference counting never frees it and the cyclic GC does so later, on whichever thread happens to run the collection. Under pytest that can be the timeout watchdog, which holds no CUDA context, and KVCM2's teardown then fails its first driver call with CUDA error 201 and poisons the manager process-wide. That is how a single teardown turned into ten reported failures in DGX_H100-PyTorch-1. test_dsa_indexer defines a class per call whose __init__ reads the enclosing cache_manager, which puts it in a closure cell reachable from the class object, and a class object is always part of a cycle. Taking the manager as a parameter shadows the outer name, so no cell is created and the only strong reference left is the returned instance's. test_pytorch_model_engine_warmup never released the manager its engine helper builds. An autouse fixture now shuts down whatever that helper created, which covers all six call sites and still runs when a test fails part way. Signed-off-by: Yao Yao <lowsfer@users.noreply.github.com>

Summary
Makes the KVCM2 host tier allocate progressively: the address range is
reserved up front, a worker thread commits it in the background, and allocation
blocks only on the chunk it actually needs. Serving starts as soon as the first
chunk is resident rather than after the whole tier is.
The tier is populated by faulting pages in through the kernel and handing them
to the driver with
cuMemHostRegister, rather than allocating them inside thedriver with
cuMemCreate. That choice is the subject of most of thisdescription, because it is a deliberate trade rather than a free win.
Why progressive
A host tier is sized from host memory, so it is routinely hundreds of GiB.
Making all of it resident before the first request is served is time the process
spends doing nothing useful, and it scales with the tier, so the larger the
configured cache the worse the startup.
Committing incrementally needs a base address that does not move while the tier
grows, and a way to make more memory resident without touching what is already
there. The range is reserved once at the tier's
max_quotaand committed as thetier grows, so the base address is fixed for the object's lifetime.
max_quotadefaults to the host memory the OS reports; a resize past the reservation is
refused in
adjustCacheLevel, before any pool group has been touched.Committing runs on a worker thread that publishes a watermark. The wait against
it is tight because fresh slot ids ascend from zero and recycled slots come
first: the Nth fresh allocation blocks only on the chunk containing it, and once
the fill completes every wait is a relaxed load. The watermark is a plain
std::atomicand the wait isatomic::wait, so a blocked allocation costs afutex wait rather than a condition variable and a lock.
The unit the fill commits in and the unit memory is allocated in are deliberately
separate. The first paces progress and is 512 MiB; the second decides how finely
a later resize can hand memory back, and is a multiple of the slot size so that
no copy ever spans two registrations.
Why registered memory rather than driver allocation
The earlier revision of this PR carried two backings behind an
IHostMemBackinginterface, selectingcuMemCreateon PCIe andmmaponcoherent platforms. That abstraction is gone: there is one backing, and it
registers.
The reason is executor starvation.
cuMemCreateallocates and zeroes pagesinside the driver, and the ioctl path it uses takes locks in the nvidia kernel
module that are shared across every process on the machine. While a rank fills
its tier, unrelated CUDA calls on that rank's executor thread queue behind the
allocation work of all the other ranks.
Measured on an 8-GPU B200 host, 8 ranks filling 64 GiB each concurrently, with a
probe thread timing
cudaPointerGetAttributesthroughout — the call a reviewerobserved an executor thread stuck in:
cuMemCreateThe register path is slower to fill and leaves the executor thread able to run.
That is the trade this PR makes, stated plainly: it costs fill throughput to
stop a one-time startup fill from freezing the process for tens of seconds.
Two cheaper fixes were tried first and do not work
Both target the existing
cuMemCreatepath and both were measured on the same8 ranks × 64 GiB:
nanosleep(1us)between driver callscuMemSetAccessper granuleBoth work beautifully with one process and neither survives contention, which
is what the kernel-side locking predicts: releasing a user-space mutex more
often cannot help when the queue that matters is a global one inside the driver.
sched_yield()does nothing even single-process — the window it opens is tooshort on an idle many-core box; only a real deschedule helps.
Registration boundaries
cuMemHostRegistermeans a copy cannot span two registered ranges, which is theconstraint a previous revision removed and this one reintroduces. It is
contained rather than leaked: the commit unit is rounded to a multiple of the
slot size, so a slot never straddles a registration and
batchedPageCopykeepsthe copy-engine path unconditionally.
Staging buffers and upload batches do not go through
HostMemat all. They aresized once and released once, so they use
StaticHostMem— a singlecuMemHostAlloc, one registration, no fill worker or watermark — and a copy mayspan the whole range.
Transparent huge pages now default off
TLLM_KV_CACHE_MANAGER_V2_THPdefaults to off.MADV_HUGEPAGEopts a region'sfaults into direct compaction wherever
/sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/defragismadviseoralways, and whatthat costs depends on how fragmented the node's free memory is.
The two NUMA nodes of a single B200 host differ by an order of magnitude. Eight
ranks filling 32 GiB each:
Every rank must finish before the system serves, so the figure that matters is
the slowest: 100 s with huge pages against 13 s without. Fragmentation
accumulates with uptime while the benefit does not, so ordinary pages bound the
worst case at 1.6× off ideal rather than 7.8×.
Transfer bandwidth does not pay for it — over a registered region
host-to-device is PCIe-bound and identical either way, and device-to-host is no
slower.
cudaHostAllocreports no huge pages at all, so this also makes thetier consistent with every other pinned buffer rather than exceptional. The
disaggregated test harness already set this variable to 0 after hitting the same
effect on CI nodes (nvbugs/6888251).
NUMA placement and
allow_remote_numa_fallbackHost pages are placed on the NUMA node the GPU attaches to.
mbindattaches thepolicy to the address range so it holds whichever thread faults a page, and the
fill worker is bound to that node's CPUs so the prefault writes are local;
neither substitutes for the other.

max_quotadefaults to total system memory —so the default takes a remote page, which the GPU reaches more slowly, over

MPOL_BIND, so a strictrequest that cannot be applied is refused rather than silently downgraded.

Test
kvCacheManagerV2HostMemBackingTestcovers reserve/commit/decommit/destroy,data preservation across a commit, rejection of a copy spanning a unit boundary,
and GPU round trips.
kvCacheManagerV2HostMemNumaTest(C++, multi-GPU stage) andtest_host_numa_placement.py(Python,l0_gb200_multi_gpus) both need two GPUson different NUMA nodes to mean anything: they pin to one node and allocate
against a GPU on the other, so an unbound range would land on the thread's node
and the case would fail. The Python test reads placement from
/proc/self/numa_maps, an ordinary file read rather than a gated syscall, so itasserts placement with or without

Verified on an 8-GPU B200 host (

Not reachable in CI
Two paths compile but no stage exercises them, because each needs a condition CI
does not create: the strict-mode refusal (
mbinddenied whileallow_remote_numa_fallback=false), and the NUMA-fragmentation regime thatmotivates the THP default, which depends on a node's free-block distribution.
