Background

When a PyTorch forward step is absorbed after an exception, _forward_step returns None. Both executor loops treated that sentinel as normal output, so the next sampling operation could crash the process-wide executor.

Changes

  • Skip sampling and output-dependent state updates after an absorbed forward in the non-overlap loop.
  • Preserve previous-batch processing and clear the failed current batch in the overlap loop.
  • Add CPU-only regression coverage for both executor paths.

Validation

  • python -m py_compile tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/py_executor.py tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_py_executor.py
  • ruff format --check tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_py_executor.py
  • git diff --check
  • The focused pytest could not collect locally because the environment has no loadable MPI runtime (libmpi.so).

Fixes #17913

Dev Engineer Review

  • The PyTorch executor now treats an absorbed _forward_step() that returns None as an iteration with no outputs.
  • The non-overlap path skips sampling and output-dependent state updates.
  • The overlap path preserves previous-batch processing, prevents current-batch reuse, and clears the failed batch.
  • Normal forward and sampling behavior remain unchanged. Inter-pipeline-parallel recovery remains out of scope.
  • The regression tests cover both executor paths and verify response flushing, KV-connector termination, statistics flushing, and batch cleanup.
  • Focused pytest execution was unavailable because the environment lacked a loadable MPI runtime. Compilation, formatting, and whitespace checks were completed.

QA Engineer Review

  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_py_executor.py adds CPU-only regression coverage in TestPendingTransferResponseFlush.
  • test_forward_error_skips_sampling_and_continues covers the non-overlap error path.
  • test_overlap_forward_error_keeps_previous_batch covers the overlap error path.

Supercedes #19118(原PR分支已删,按原提交重建)

Dev Engineer Review

The PyTorch executor handles _forward_step() returning None without terminating serving. The overlap path skips sampling for the failed batch, processes the previous batch, and clears failed state. No public API or configuration changes are introduced.

QA Engineer Review

tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_py_executor.py adds CPU-only regression tests for overlap and non-overlap paths. The tests cover response flushing, KV-connector termination, statistics flushing, and failed-batch cleanup. No matching test-list entry was found. Focused pytest collection was unavailable because the environment lacked a loadable MPI runtime. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/_torch/pyexecutor/py_executor.py: Verify that absorbed forward steps skip sampling and output-dependent updates without reusing failed batches. Inter-pipeline-parallel recovery remains out of scope.
  • tests/unittest/_torch/executor/test_py_executor.py: Covers absorbed forward steps in both executor paths, including cleanup and response handling. Focused execution remains blocked by the missing MPI runtime.

Walkthrough

The PyTorch executor now handles None results from _forward_step() without dereferencing them. It skips affected sampling, continues cleanup and response flushing, and clears failed overlap state. Regression tests cover both executor loops.

Skip output processing after a failed non-overlap forward.

_forward_step() catches forward exceptions and returns None. The non-overlap loop then passes batch_outputs['logits'] to guided_decoder.execute() when guided decoding is enabled, which dereferences None and can terminate the executor thread. When guided decoding is disabled, _sample_async() returns None, but the loop still proceeds with sample_state=None; this path has no later assert sample_state is not None.

Set forward_failed = batch_outputs is None, set can_queue = False, and skip guided-decoder execution, sampling, and sample-dependent updates for that iteration, as the overlap loop does.

Return borrowed timing events after a failed overlap forward.

When enable_iter_perf_stats is enabled but PerfMetricsManager.create_timing_events() returns no forward pair, the overlap loop borrows events and sets gpu_forward_events_from_perf_pool=True at lines 5240-5245. If _forward_step() returns None, can_queue becomes false at lines 5257-5259, so the BatchState construction at lines 5374-5383 is skipped. The release paths only handle events stored in a BatchState; the failed iteration's pair is not returned to _forward_event_pool.

The pool is not bounded, so repeated failures do not literally exhaust it. Each subsequent failure instead allocates another pair rather than reusing the prior pair, causing avoidable CUDA-event allocation churn.

When forward_failed is true and gpu_forward_events_from_perf_pool is set, release gpu_forward_start and gpu_forward_end after the forward-recording context.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Exercise a generation request and observe skipped sampling.

_executor_loop calls _sample_async for every queued batch. _sample_async returns immediately when batch_outputs is None, so the empty generation_requests list and current assertions cannot detect a loop that still calls sampling after _forward_step() fails.

Add a minimal generation request. Mock _sample_async and output-dependent update calls. Assert that neither runs after _forward_step() returns None. Keep the cleanup assertions.

Test coverage is currently insufficient for the sampling-skip regression; this unit test does not require a test-list entry.

Assert that processing uses the original previous batch.

_process_previous_batch() reads executor.previous_batch, but the bare mock only checks that it was called. A regression that replaces previous_batch with scheduled_batch before processing would still pass the final None assertion.

Capture the original batch and use a side effect to assert its identity during _process_previous_batch(). Keep the final cleanup assertion.

Test coverage summary: The modified unit test covers failed overlap forward processing, cleanup, and scheduler shutdown. Test-list coverage is not applicable. Coverage is insufficient because the batch identity passed to processing is not observed.

Thanks for working on the overlap path. I ran a separate reproduction on a T4 and hit the remaining non-overlap path: _forward_step() returns None after the exception is handled, and the non-overlap _executor_loop() still reaches batch_outputs['logits'] when guided_decoder is enabled. I got the same TypeError followed by executor cleanup/shutdown.

Looks like CodeRabbit already flagged this part as well. If useful, I can work on the non-overlap regression test and fix alongside the current changes.

This looks superseded by #19465 on main.

This is now covered on main: #19465 handles a None result from _forward_step in all three executor loops, and this branch conflicts with it here. That fix also covers two cases this version misses: it drops the previous batch instead of running _update_requests and _process_previous_batch on requests _handle_errors(requests=None) already terminated, and it tags first-chunk context failures with py_kv_reuse_poisoned, so V1 block reuse does not store their unwritten prompt blocks once the overlap loop survives the error. Could you check whether anything is still missing on main, and close this PR if not?
