Summary

  • Gates the four MCP Registry steps in publish.yml (stamp server.json, install mcp-publisher, 300 s validation wait, publish) on !contains(tag, '-'), the same expression that already marks the GitHub Release as a pre-release.
  • Updates the release flow in ARCHITECTURE.md and the release note in CLAUDE.md.

Why

The Registry sorts by semver and sets isLatest accordingly (versioning docs). Publishing 1.2.0-beta.1 would rank it above 1.1.0 and point registry clients at the beta until 1.2.0 ships.

This unblocks a v1.2.0-beta.1 tag to exercise the new Native AOT release pipeline from #193 end to end: NuGet.org, GitHub Packages, the NuGet.org wait, pointer packages, and the GitHub pre-release. The mcp-publisher commands haven't changed since v1.1.0, so skipping them on betas loses little coverage.

Test plan

  • actionlint passes on publish.yml
  • Tag v1.2.0-beta.1 after merge: the Registry steps show as skipped and the GitHub Release is marked pre-release

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

The MCP Registry ranks versions by semver, so publishing a pre-release
such as 1.2.0-beta.1 over 1.1.0 would make it the Registry's "latest".
The four Registry steps now run only for tags without a "-" suffix,
matching the expression that already marks the GitHub Release as a
pre-release.

🟢 Approval recommended

The workflow gating is consistent with the existing prerelease detection logic and the documentation updates match the intended behavior.

Pull request overview

Updates the release automation and documentation so that publishing to the Official MCP Registry is skipped for pre-release tags (those containing -), while still producing a GitHub pre-release and publishing packages to NuGet/GitHub Packages as usual. This aligns the pipeline behavior with the MCP Registry’s semver-based “latest” selection to avoid betas superseding the current stable release.

Changes:

  • Gate the MCP Registry-related steps in .github/workflows/publish.yml behind !contains(tag, '-').
  • Document the pre-release behavior in ARCHITECTURE.md and CLAUDE.md.
