What

failproofai config → Log in to FailproofAI Cloud. No more copying a key out of the dashboard: pick "log in", authorize in the browser, and the terminal finishes setup on its own.

Cloud half: FailproofAI/agenteye#1090 (the /api/auth/cli/* API and the /cli/authorize page). This PR degrades cleanly against a Cloud without it — see below.

CONNECT TO CLOUD app.befailproof.ai
› Log in to FailproofAI Cloud recommended · opens your browser
Paste an API key one you already have
Use open source skip the cloud

→ link opened (or printed over SSH / with no display) → browser: sign up / in → pick or create an org → Authorize
→ ✓ Logged in as you@acme.com · Acme (acme) on app.befailproof.ai (no keypress) → agents → daemon installs → key created now → connected.

  • The key is claimed at APPLY, after the daemon installs. Esc, Ctrl-C, a failed install or a closed terminal after approving leaves no key anywhere (verified end to end).
  • Who approved it is shown in the terminal — the visible check against a link someone else approved into their org.
  • Already connected: "Keep current connection" comes first; if the saved key's background check says it was refused, "Log in again" comes first with your saved key no longer works. Logging in again mints a new key and says the old one keeps working until revoked.
  • Older Cloud: a 404 / redirect from /api/auth/cli/start reads as unsupported → "doesn't support logging in from here yet. Press esc and paste an API key instead."
  • Unchanged: --token, FAILPROOFAI_CLOUD_TOKEN, --oss, and every run without a terminal never see the login.
  • Fix: sudo is re-asked at apply when the cached credential expired during the browser step (5 min default on macOS), instead of failing after everything else.

Changes

  • src/hooks/cloud-login.ts — start / poll / claim, injectable fetch, never follows redirects (same reason as introspectKey), only ever hands an http(s) link to the opener.
  • src/hooks/tui.ts — promptBrowserLogin: the link is printed above the repainted region (a cut link can't be clicked or copied), spinner + countdown, slow_down, keeps polling through a dropped connection, expiry/deny → Enter for a new link, Esc → back to the menu.
  • src/hooks/configure-wizard.ts — the Connect menu (chooseConnection), CloudPlan gains login, claim at apply then the unchanged connectToCloud, re-login note, sudo re-ask.
  • src/audit/open-browser.ts — canOpenBrowser() (false over SSH or with no display), openUrl exported.
  • Docs: quickstart and CLI reference lead with the login; the key path moves to a "no browser / CI" accordion.
  • __tests__/e2e/layout/cli-login.sh + cli-login-driver.py — new deliberate-run harness (README updated).

Testing

  • New: cloud-login.test.ts (12), browser-login-prompt.test.ts (10, through a real PassThrough keypress parser), 11 new wizard tests (claim order vs daemon install, Esc/Ctrl-C, claim failures, re-login note, sudo re-ask, start/poll mapping, SSH printing, headless never offered).
  • Changed: the wizard's connect-step tests now drive the menu. Their intent is kept one for one (still two questions; no OTel question; D4 — a connected machine is never offered open source from this step; a typed key is refused without a request when the URL is unusable; sudo before the first prompt).
  • Full unit suite: 8467 passed, 0 failed. test:e2e: 361 passed (2 otel cases only fail where node is a ~/.local/bin shim script, unrelated). tsc, lint, bun run build clean.
  • End to end, cli-login.sh: 49/49 — the real wizard in a pty in a systemd container, real daemon, approvals through the real dashboard API with OTP codes from mailpit: fresh login, re-login, deny + retry, abandon after approval (no key), Esc, link expiry, revoked saved key, older server, person-side refusals. Run against both the hybrid dev stack and docker compose up --build images.

Note for reviewers

__tests__/hooks/daemon-service.test.ts's real-systemd block (pre-existing) runs on any host where sudo -n true succeeds — it attempted a real install on a developer laptop during this work (failed before writing anything). --exclude can't skip it because vitest.config.mts uses projects. Worth gating behind an opt-in env var in a follow-up.

Summary

Browser-based Cloud login is integrated into the configuration wizard with terminal polling, delayed key claiming, browser launching, tests, and documentation. Two advisory correctness/observability issues remain. Targeted unit tests could not run because the supplied workspace has no Vitest dependencies installed.

Changes

  • Adds Cloud CLI login start, poll, and claim protocol handling.
  • Adds an interactive browser-login terminal prompt and browser availability detection.
  • Integrates login choice and delayed key claiming into configuration.
  • Adds unit and deliberate E2E login coverage, plus CLI documentation.

Validation

  • Failed docker run --rm --network=none -v /review/input/workspace:/workspace:ro -w /workspace oven/bun:latest bun run test:run __tests__/hooks/cloud-login.test.ts __tests__/hooks/browser-login-prompt.test.ts __tests__/hooks/configure-wizard.test.ts — No tests executed: the mounted workspace has no installed Vitest binary (vitest: command not found). (9s)

Findings

No blocking findings.

2 advisory findings
  • Low/High Retry leaves a superseded authorization link visible — promptBrowserLogin appends each successful link to above at src/hooks/tui.ts:1584, but retrying with Enter calls begin() without clearing those lines. The old URL is removed only when finish(BACK) runs at lines 1502-1506. After an expired or denied login, a newly printed link therefore appears below an unlabelled, dead link that can still be copied or opened. (src/hooks/tui.ts:1584)
  • Low/High Completion telemetry reports browser-login failures as connected — connecting is true for every login plan, and configure_applied is emitted with connected: connecting and Cloud mode at src/hooks/configure-wizard.ts:1441-1457. The event precedes claimLogin at line 1506 and connectToCloud at line 1531. A failed claim ultimately returns mode: "oss" at line 1604, while telemetry has already recorded a successful Cloud connection. (src/hooks/configure-wizard.ts:1441)

📝 Walkthrough

CLI setup now supports browser-based Cloud login, API-key entry, open-source mode, and saved-connection choices. The wizard claims approved logins after daemon setup. Tests and documentation cover the login flow, and setup rechecks expired sudo authorization.

Changes: Cloud Browser Login

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cloud login protocol and browser availability
src/hooks/cloud-login.ts, src/audit/open-browser.ts, src/hooks/cloud-introspect.ts, __tests__/hooks/cloud-login.test.ts
Adds typed login start, poll, and claim operations; browser-opening eligibility checks; and sanitized display text. Tests cover response handling, bounded values, and browser eligibility.
Browser authorization prompt
src/hooks/tui.ts, __tests__/hooks/browser-login-prompt.test.ts
Adds a terminal prompt that opens or prints authorization links, polls login status, supports retry and cancellation, and restores terminal state.
Config wizard integration
src/hooks/configure-wizard.ts, __tests__/hooks/configure-wizard.test.ts, docs/reference/failproof-cli.mdx, docs/start/quickstart.mdx, CHANGELOG.md

Running config can send a saved API token over plain HTTP to a hand-edited non-local address, and a failed re-login after a refused saved key is reported as still connected to Cloud. Both are narrow cases with small fixes, and both should be fixed before merge.

src/hooks/cloud-login.ts:143-157
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Map a legacy 200 HTML response to unsupported.

An older Cloud dashboard can return its HTML login page with HTTP 200 for this unknown route. postJson converts that body to json: null, but startLogin maps the response to refused. The configure flow then marks it retryable and shows Couldn't start the login: the server answered 200. instead of offering the API-key fallback.

Handle the non-JSON 200 response as unsupported at this mapping boundary.

Emit configure_applied after the Cloud connection result is known.

connecting is true for every browser-login plan. The event is emitted before claimLogin and connectToCloud, so expired, revoked, unreachable, or otherwise failed claims record connected: true and mode: "cloud". The final result can report connected: false and mode: "oss" for the same run.

Move the emission after the claim and connection branches, and derive both fields from the final connection state.

The current evidence supports a concrete organization persistence defect. The browser claim returns an organization, but connectToCloud receives only the URL and token. When organization introspection is unsupported or unreachable, a successful capability verification can still write the new token while preserving the previous organization or an empty organization. This leaves persisted Cloud credentials inconsistent with the account that approved the login.

Pass the claimed organization to connectToCloud and use it when introspection does not return one.

Hermes found blocking issues that should be addressed.

High: Validate saved endpoints before browser login claims a key

  • Rule: SEC-001
  • Location: src/hooks/configure-wizard.ts:1167
  • Evidence: When neither --url nor FAILPROOFAI_CLOUD_URL is set, resolveCloudUrl returns the saved existing URL without validation (src/hooks/configure-wizard.ts:1647). A legacy or manually edited credential can therefore contain http://non-loopback. Selecting login calls askLogin(url) (line 1167) and later sends the poll secret to claimLogin (line 1489), receiving the newly minted API key over that cleartext channel. connectToCloud validates the URL only afterwards (src/hooks/cloud-connection.ts:222), so its rejection neither prevents minting nor protects an intercepted key.
  • Required change: Run saved endpoints through validateCloudUrl(cloudBaseFor(existing)) before offering login, or enforce the same HTTPS/loopback restriction inside startLogin, pollLogin, and claimLogin. Refuse browser login for invalid saved URLs before any protocol request.
1 advisory finding

Hermes — High/High (SEC-001): Validate saved endpoints before browser login claims a key

When neither --url nor FAILPROOFAI_CLOUD_URL is set, resolveCloudUrl returns the saved existing URL without validation (src/hooks/configure-wizard.ts:1647).

Required change: Run saved endpoints through validateCloudUrl(cloudBaseFor(existing)) before offering login, or enforce the same HTTPS/loopback restriction inside startLogin, pollLogin, and claimLogin. Refuse browser login for invalid saved URLs before any protocol request.

The CONNECT step opens with a menu: log in through the browser (default),
paste an API key, or use open source. Logging in opens a link (or prints
it over SSH / with no display) where a person signs up or in, picks or
creates an org and authorizes the machine; the CLI polls with a secret
only it holds and shows who approved it, for which org. The key is
claimed at APPLY, after the daemon installs, so an abandoned run mints
nothing. A connected machine is offered "keep" first, or "log in again"
first when its saved key no longer works.

- src/hooks/cloud-login.ts: start / poll / claim against
/api/auth/cli/*, injectable fetch, no redirects followed, only http(s)
links ever handed to the opener; older clouds read as unsupported
- tui promptBrowserLogin: link printed above the live region (never cut),
esc back, ctrl-c cancel, expiry/deny offer a new link, keeps polling
  through a dropped connection
- configure-wizard: Connect menu, claim at apply, re-login note, sudo
re-asked at apply when the cache expired during the login
- open-browser: canOpenBrowser (false over SSH / no display), openUrl
  exported
- e2e harness __tests__/e2e/layout/cli-login.sh + pty driver
- docs: quickstart and CLI reference lead with the login

…before a unit refresh

- The terminal now says "Not authorized in the browser." when the person picks
[ don't authorize ] on the page (was "The request was cancelled in the
browser."), matching the page's vocabulary; the e2e harness waits for it.
- The quickstart no longer asks people to check the key's name and
permissions: the page stopped showing them, the server sets both.
- The e2e harness approves without a `jev` flag, exactly as the page does now,
and still asserts the key gets jev:evaluate because the approver holds it.
- CodeRabbit: the sudo re-ask before apply also covers refreshing a stale
service definition; failing it there costs the scheduled audit (caution),
never the setup. The reference doc no longer says setup "never" prompts for
a password: a terminal run does, and asks again if it expired.

…ver sends

Connect to cloud on a machine with no connection (or a refused saved key)
now starts the browser login straight away — link generated, browser opened
or link printed, countdown running. Tab or Esc there opens the other
options; Ctrl-C cancels. A machine connected with a working key still gets
the menu, keep first, so re-running config never opens a browser. An older
cloud drops straight into the options without the login entry. Leaving the
waiting screen erases the link it printed (rows counted at the current
width), so no dead link sits above the menu.

Deep-scan fixes:
- Everything the server sends is printed as text only: org name and slug,
approver, key name, errors (controls, bidi overrides and zero-width
characters stripped — an org named with escape codes cleared the screen
and retitled the terminal mid-setup), and the link as the URL parser
serialises it. Same for the introspect path's "Connected as".
- The server's poll interval and expiry are clamped (an interval past 2^31
ms made setTimeout fire every millisecond); slow_down never speeds up.
- A saved cloud address is validated like a typed one.
- A key that was created but could not be put to use is named, so it can
be revoked; a "log in again" that created no key reports the previous
  connection, not open source.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Compare saved against null, not undefined.

savedConnection() returns null when no key is on disk (| null at Line 1640). saved !== undefined is therefore always true. Consider a fresh machine where the browser login is approved but claimLogin returns expired, revoked, refused or unreachable. Then keptOld is true, and these things go wrong:

  • The run prints "This machine keeps its previous connection.", but there is no previous connection.
  • doneLines gets connected: true (Line 1591), so it drops the "Connect to cloud any time" hint.
  • WizardResult.mode is "cloud" (Line 1604) on a machine with no credential.

Elsewhere this function checks saved for truthiness (Boolean(saved), saved ? …, cloud.kind === "login" && saved && connected). The test "finishes the rest of setup when the key can't be created" runs on a fresh machine but asserts only connected: false. Add mode: "oss" to that test so it covers this case.

Hermes found no blocking issues in this revision.

savedConnection() returns null, not undefined, so `saved !== undefined` was
always true: a fresh machine whose login claim failed printed "This machine
keeps its previous connection." and reported mode "cloud" with no credential
on disk. Truthiness, like every other check of `saved` here. The fresh-machine
claim-failure test now asserts mode "oss" and the absence of that line
(CodeRabbit, PR #920).

I could not establish complete review coverage for b7aaddd3a874, so I did not approve it. I have no specific question to ask — this is a coverage gap on my side, not a request for input.

What the review did establish:

Browser-based Cloud login is integrated into the configuration wizard with terminal polling, delayed key claiming, browser launching, tests, and documentation. Two advisory correctness/observability issues remain. Targeted unit tests could not run because the supplied workspace has no Vitest dependencies installed.

Re-run with @hermes-exosphere review [focus] to point me at the part that matters most, or @hermes-exosphere reconsider [reason] if you believe the coverage was sufficient.

Validate the saved endpoint before checking the saved key.

resolveCloudUrl rejects unsafe saved addresses, but this call still passes saved.url and saved.token to checkCloudKey before that validation controls the request. A manually edited non-loopback http:// address can therefore receive the saved token. Validate saved.url independently and skip this check when validation fails.

Do not keep a saved connection after its key was refused.

chooseConnection records savedBroken when the saved key is refused. If the browser claim later expires, token remains null, but Boolean(saved) sets keptOld to true. The wizard then reports a cloud connection although the saved key is known to be unusable. Carry the saved-key verdict to this point and require it to be non-refused. Add a regression test for this case.
