feat(brainbar): show a job alert once per screen, with Show log, cleared by a clean run - #1062
Etan saw "BrainLayer light maintenance failed; check the maintenance log" 4× (from the 2026-10-02 04:00 nightly light pass). Lead ruling, 2026-10-04: show each alert once per screen, in the words of the job that failed, with a "Show log" action, and clear it after a clean run.
What changed
Ruling
Change
1. Once per screen
Backups page: the alert appeared twice (badge reason + red row). Now it is one alert card. The Backups badge keeps Needs attention without repeating the sentence, and the status rows drop it. The Dashboard ("1 thing needs you") and the menu already showed it once; they are unchanged apart from Show log.
2. Real message
BrainBar renders whatever reason the job alert carries (job_alert:<reason>), with nothing hardcoded, so backend PR A's new wording appears as written.
3. Show log
Backups card, Dashboard attention item, and a menu item (the menu item is hidden unless a job alert is active). It opens the failing job's log in its default app (maintenance-* → maintenance.log, backup-daily → backup-daily.log, jsonl-backup → jsonl-backup.log, each path resolved from the job's own LaunchAgent environment). When no log exists yet, or the job is unknown, it reveals the logs folder.
4. Clean run clears it
ObservabilityReader.readReconciled reconciles observability.json with job-alerts.json (the file job_alerts.report(key, None) empties) on every read. A cleared alert disappears immediately, not at the next observability write. If another job still has an alert, that one is shown. A missing or unreadable alert file leaves the document unchanged ("unknown", never "no alerts").
Live check (read-only): on this machine, ~/.local/share/brainlayer/job-alerts.json is {} (mtime 2026-10-03 04:03, the clean light pass), and observability.json (generated 2026-10-04T09:45Z) has backups.error_type = null. The backend clear path works end to end; this PR makes the UI follow it without lag.
Light/dark: every Dashboard and Backups capture was rendered under both the aqua and darkAqua appearances, and the pairs are byte-identical: BrainBar pins its own dark scheme. Only the menu follows the system appearance. The menu cannot be captured off-screen, so its render draws the controller's real row titles (menuRowTitles), and the menu tests check the live NSMenu.
Show log → ~/.local/share/brainlayer/logs/maintenance.log for every maintenance-* alert (the file fix(maintenance): warn on moderate warm search latency #1061 makes hold every abort/failure reason), never the LaunchAgent .out/.err. The path is BRAINLAYER_MAINTENANCE_LOG_PATH from the job's own environment, which is unset on this Mac (checked read-only for both maintenance LaunchAgents), so the default applies. Pinned by test_show_log_defaults_to_the_shared_maintenance_log_never_the_launch_agent_stdout.
N1, success with warnings:fix(maintenance): warn on moderate warm search latency #1061's {"status": "ok", "warnings": [...]} record is read. When the latest run's own record has warnings, the Maintenance card shows a quiet amber note, e.g. "Nightly last run OK · search slower than target (62 ms)". The badge stays Healthy. A later run without warnings clears it. Renders: with a warning · after a clean run (amber pixels 307 → 0). Tests: 4 in BrainBarMaintenanceSkipTests (parse, quiet note, unrecognised warning shown as written, cleared / older-run warning ignored).
Tests
New BrainBarJobAlertTests (10) and BrainBarBackupsJobAlertPageTests (3), written failing first. They cover: alert-file read (unknown ≠ empty) and path resolution, the clean-run clear, keep-live, switching to a remaining alert, never touching a non-job backup error, the reconciling reader end to end on temp files, key → log mapping, open vs. reveal, the menu item only while active, the Backups page showing the alert exactly once, the cleared page being Healthy with no red row, and other red reasons still appearing under the badge.
Two existing menu tests now assert on visible items: the hidden Show log item is the only difference when no alert is active.
Full Swift suite at e95dd666: 1048 tests, 0 failures, 3 skipped. Pre-push changed-only gate passed.
Not done here / follow-ups
Not verified in the running app: Show log was not clicked in the installed app. The open/reveal choice is covered by tests through an injected workspace.
A maintenance alert still makes the Backups badge say "Needs attention", because the observability contract carries job alerts under backups.error_type. Routing maintenance-* alerts to Jobs → Maintenance is a possible follow-up (the job key is now known in the UI).
Provenance
Implementer: brainlayerClaude-a877a8e3 (Claude Opus 5.5). UI work, so Claude implements and Codex reviews, routed by the lead (brainClaude) after CI.
Review rounds: 2 (bots).
Round 1, Macroscope (3 medium, fixed in 56ce24a5): the nightly log comes from its own LaunchAgent; a malformed job-alerts.json is unknown, never "no alerts"; Show log matches the raw reason, not the sanitized text.
Round 2, Macroscope (1 medium, fixed in e95dd666): the alert file is resolved from the observability producer's own environment (BrainLayerJobEnvironment, moved verbatim to its own file shared with the daemon).
DeepSource style findings, all fixed.
CodeRabbit and Bugbot were rate-limited and did not run.
Codex review round 1 (CHANGES_REQUIRED), fixed in 695065c4 + 4f7d1090:
B1: a missing log now says so on Backups, the Dashboard and the menu.
B2: the menu clears a recovered alert like the other surfaces.
N2: full-suite receipts are in the PR comment. The concurrent socket flake is pre-existing: it reproduced on main 6 of 6 because pending-stores.jsonl is shared in the temp directory.
Macroscope follow-ups: the log note is keyed to its alert, and the status item follows the menu.
Full suite @ 4f7d1090, sequential ×3: 1058 UI + 10 daemon tests, 0 failures, exit 0 each time.
The first test (3.12) failure was a Python cross-test tmp-file leak in test_write_queue; it passed on rerun, and this PR changes no Python.
Size L: 616 added lines = 255 product + 218 tests + 103 debug-only render harness + 40 README. It is not split, because the render proof belongs with the change it proves.
Medium Risk
Changes default observability and badge reads to reconcile with on-disk job-alert state and add file-open actions tied to LaunchAgent-resolved paths; malformed alert files are treated as unknown (safe) but behavior shifts when alerts clear before observability updates.
Overview
BrainBar now treats job-alerts.json as the live source of truth for failing jobs: ObservabilityReader.readReconciled merges it into observability on every read/poll, and the menu badge is reconciled the same way (including on menu open) so a clean run clears alerts immediately instead of waiting for the next observability write.
Show log is added on the Dashboard attention item, Backups job alert card, and status menu. It opens the job’s log via NSWorkspace.open (paths from each job’s LaunchAgent env, including a separate nightly maintenance log). If the file isn’t there yet, surfaces show an explicit message (not a silent folder reveal) while still revealing the logs folder when it exists.
The Backups page shows each job alert once (dedicated card + Show log); the group badge and status rows no longer repeat the same sentence. Successful maintenance runs with warnings in JSON logs surface as a quiet amber note on Jobs without changing healthy status.
BrainLayerJobEnvironment is split into its own module (daemon symlink). Tests, render harness captures, and UI render docs cover alert/cleared/no-log and warning states.

Note
Add per-job alert cards with Show log action and live alert reconciliation in BrainBar
Shows each red job_alert: error once on the Backups, Dashboard, and status-menu surfaces, with a Show log button that opens the job's log or reveals the logs folder when the log is missing
Reconciles badge state against the producer's live job-alert file before display, so a clean run clears a stale alert and a new reason replaces the old one (BrainBarJobAlerts.swift)
Resolves job log paths through the producer LaunchAgent's effective environment, supporting a nightly-specific maintenance log path; adds env-file and tilde parsing in BrainLayerJobEnvironment.swift
Surface successful-run warnings (e.g. search latency) as quiet amber notes on the maintenance card without changing group health (BrainLayerLaunchdActivity.swift)
Behavioral Change: default observability reads in ObservabilityLiveView.Reader and BrainBarSettingsViewModel now go through ObservabilityReader.readReconciled; unreadable or malformed alert files leave the badge unchanged, and status-menu tests now exclude hidden items
Job alerts appear on the Backups page, dashboard, and status menu, with an option to open the relevant log.
When a log is unavailable, the interface explains its status and can open the containing folder when available.
Bug Fixes
Alerts now reflect current job status, clearing resolved alerts while preserving unrelated backup errors.
Improvements
Warnings from successful maintenance runs appear as amber notes without changing the healthy status. Search-latency warnings are displayed in a concise format.
…red by a clean run
Etan saw "BrainLayer light maintenance failed; check the maintenance log" 4x
(lead ruling 2026-10-04).
- Backups page: one alert card with Show log; the Backups badge keeps
"Needs attention" without repeating the sentence, and the status rows drop it.
- Dashboard: Show log on the alert's attention item.
- Menu: a Show log item under the status line while a job alert is active.
- Show log opens the failing job's log (maintenance-*, backup-daily,
jsonl-backup), or reveals the logs folder when there is no log yet.
- ObservabilityReader.readReconciled reconciles observability.json with
job-alerts.json, so a clean run clears the alert everywhere at once; an
unreadable alert file leaves the document as read.
- The alert's words are rendered as the job wrote them; nothing hardcoded.
- Render proof: brain-bar/docs/ui-renders/2026-10-04-maintenance-alert/.

Alert-file paths use the producer’s effective environment or a database-relative default. Readable observability documents and badge issues reconcile against known alert state; unknown alert state leaves documents unchanged. The default observability readers use reconciliation.
Known alert keys map to log paths. The Backups page, Dashboard, and status menu provide Show log actions. Existing logs open, while missing logs produce a message and may reveal the parent folder.
Warnings from the latest qualifying successful maintenance run appear as status notes. Recognized search-latency warnings are formatted for display; other warning text is preserved. Warnings do not change health status. Render captures and documentation cover alert, cleared, and missing-log states.

The missing-log message is intentionally informational in the menu. No actionable merge-blocking issue remains after normal checks.
Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🔵 Low · up to 9255e
The change is bounded to local job alerts and user-triggered log opening. Alert text cannot directly supply a command or arbitrary destination, and unreadable alert state does not clear an existing warning. Risk remains low rather than minimal because deployed configuration permissions and some producer-consumer consistency guarantees are not fully established.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated exposure is local: job-state files affect alert presentation, and an explicit UI action opens a configured file in the user's desktop session. The inspected chain provides no evidence of increased service privileges or cross-tenant authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Alert keys select fixed maintenance, database-backup or transcript-backup log mappings. Unknown keys reveal the configured maintenance-log folder; keys and reason text are not interpolated into destination paths or commands.
observed — LaunchAgent and environment configuration remain authoritative for file paths, without containment to the default logs directory. The PR newly exposes mapped paths to the opening operation. This is configuration-controlled exposure, not an established alert-content attack; deployed configuration permissions were not verified.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Independent reads can observe different producer generations, but the consumer does not persist that reconciliation or mutate producer state. Unknown reads preserve the original document, limiting failure propagation to derived presentation rather than destructive state changes.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — If job alerts become security-critical operational controls, carry a stable job key alongside the observability reason and define snapshot and replacement-order semantics explicitly. This would strengthen diagnostic ownership without treating currently unproven duplicate-reason or concurrency scenarios as vulnerabilities.

Which commit this whole table is about. On a pull_request event the checkout is GitHub's synthetic merge ref, whose sha is not on the PR — #759's table printed 13fa724278bf while that PR's head was 4632f979 — so this row names the PR-head parent instead, the sha a reviewer can actually see. The comparison sha is read live from repos/{owner}/{repo}/pulls/{n} when the table is collected, not taken from the event payload, because the payload cannot know the run has been overtaken. Residual window, stated rather than papered over: a push landing between that read and the comment being posted is not caught here — the run for that push refreshes the table.

What every comparison is measured AGAINST, and who says so. The baseline fields of tests/fixtures/sprint_gate/corpus.json (queries, latency_baseline_ms, thresholds) are compared to the ratchet-attestation artifact of the latest successful push or (no-input) workflow_dispatch run of ratchet-attest.yml on main, fetched through the Actions API — a PR run cannot write to another run's artifacts. A field that differs is RED unless that main run measured the new value. The calibrated socket collector can license p50/p95; every absent measured path stays locked, so missing collection never passes as permission for a hand edit. Boundary: the comparator is this PR's checkout of ci_ratchet_table.py, diff-reviewable, not tamper-proof.

Prefer using `min()` or `max()` over `sorted().first` or `sorted().last`
Using sorted().first or sorted().last can be inefficient, as the entire collection needs to be sorted, which is not required if we only need the minimum or maximum element. This can cause performance issues, especially when dealing with large collections.

An XCTFail call should include a description of the assertion
When a test case fails, the XCTFail call is used to indicate the failure. However, without a description, it becomes challenging to determine the specific reason for the failure. This can lead to confusion and increase debugging time, especially when multiple assertions are present in the same test case. It is recommended to always include a descriptive message when using XCTFail to provide clarity and context for failed assertions.

warningNotes is never populated for an actual successful maintenance run, so the new Maintenance note is never shown. BrainLayerMaintenanceExit.thisRunsWarnings(...) reads warnings, but maintenance.py emits successful records without that field (_result_to_dict has no warnings); its latency check raises MaintenanceAbort instead of recording a warning. Add a warnings field to successful producer records (or remove this reader-side note path) so the two sides use the same schema.

Fixed in e95dd66. readReconciled and Show log (Backups page and Dashboard) resolve the alert file through BrainBarJobAlerts.producerURL: com.brainlayer.observability's effective environment (LaunchAgent EnvironmentVariables, then its env file, then BrainBar's), the same resolution BrainBar already uses for backup paths. CodeRabbit #1062: Int(value.rounded()) trapped on an absurd latency in a
warning; anything not a finite 0 to 1e6 ms value is now shown as written.
DeepSource: producerURL moves into the struct body.

…recovered alert (Codex r1 B1, B2)
B1: Show log returns BrainBarJobAlertLogResult. With no log file yet, Backups,
the Dashboard and the menu say "No maintenance log yet; it's written on the
next run." (per-job wording) instead of silently revealing a folder.
B2: the menu's badge-state.json issues are reconciled with job-alerts.json
(resolved from the health-check producer's environment) on every badge read and
on menu open, so a recovered job alert clears there exactly as on Backups and
the Dashboard. Tests cover the missing-log path on all three surfaces and
Codex's exact fixture (alerts {} + fresh failing badge file).

Round 1 (Codex CHANGES_REQUIRED) addressed in 695065c4
B1: Show log with no log file.showLog returns BrainBarJobAlertLogResult (.opened(URL) / .missing(message:)). Every surface now shows the sentence ("No maintenance log yet; it's written on the next run.", worded per job):
Backups: under the alert, from viewModel.jobAlertLogMessage.
Dashboard: beside the item's Show log, from panelState.jobAlertLogMessage.
Menu: the Show log row becomes that sentence, as a disabled item.
The logs folder is still revealed when it exists. Tests cover all three surfaces (BrainBarJobAlertRoundOneTests). Renders: after-nolog-{backups,dashboard-expanded,menu} in brain-bar/docs/ui-renders/2026-10-04-maintenance-alert/.
B2: the menu clears like the other surfaces.BadgeStatePresentation.reconciled(with:) drops a job_alert_<key> issue whose job no longer reports an alert, by the same rule as Backups and the Dashboard.
It runs on every badge read and again when the menu opens.
The alert file comes from com.brainlayer.health-check's effective environment.
An unknown file changes nothing.
test_the_menu_clears_a_recovered_job_alert_while_the_badge_file_is_still_fresh uses your exact fixture: alerts {} plus a fresh, failing badge-state.json. The result is "Nothing needs attention" and no Show log.
N2: full-suite receipt and the socket flake.
This PR @ 695065c4, sequential swift test ×3: each run is 1055 UI tests, 3 skipped, 0 failures, plus 10 daemon tests, 0 failures, exit 0.
main @ e59cf871 single-process ×3: 1025 tests, 0 failures each time.
Pre-existing, reproduced on main.SocketIntegrationTests puts each scratch DB in the system temp directory (NSTemporaryDirectory()/brainbar-integration-<uuid>.db). The pending-store queue defaults to <db dir>/pending-stores.jsonl, so every concurrent test process on the machine shares one pending-stores.jsonl and can drain the others' deferred stores. Running the main socket suite in two concurrent xctest processes, 3 rounds, gave 6 of 6 processes failing testBrainStoreDuringBackupIsDurablyDeferredAndDrainsAfterSnapshot (3–6 assertions each, including the differing chunk_id from your log).
Not caused by this PR: it touches neither SocketIntegrationTests.swift nor BrainDatabase.swift.
Not reproduced: the silent exit in your sequential run. With no leftover queue file and clean sequential runs on both branches, I couldn't explain it.
Fix (proposed, not in this PR): give each test its own temp directory. That's a test fix, so it's routed to the lead as a separate PR.
…follows the menu (Macroscope)
- The "no log yet" note is keyed by the alert's raw reason (BrainBarJobAlertLogNote)
on Backups and the Dashboard, so a later, different alert never inherits it.
- When the open menu reconciles a cleared job alert, the status item's badge
and tooltip update at once, not at the next badge read.

🟡 MediumBrainBar/BrainBarJobAlerts.swift:120
reconciled(with:) retains any job_alert_<key> whose key still exists, even when its cached message no longer matches alerts.active[key]; this leaves the expired drive-consent warning visible after the backend replaces it with the expired message. It also only filters the cached codes, so when A is cleared and B is active, it removes job_alert_A but never adds job_alert_B, hiding the replacement alert until the badge producer rewrites its file. Rebuild the job-alert entries from the live alerts.active state (including current messages) rather than only filtering activeCodes.
reconciled(with:) can only filter raw.activeCodes; it cannot add an alert that is present only in job-alerts.json. If the cached badge lists job_alert_A while the live alert file has cleared A and contains job B, this line produces a badge with A removed (and potentially badgeOn == false) rather than presenting B. Thus opening the menu can hide a still-active replacement job alert until the health-check badge file is rewritten.

Fixed in 9255e12. reconciled(with:) now replaces a kept job_alert_<key> issue's message with alerts.active[key], so a job that re-reports (drive-consent) shows its current reason, and the joined reason follows. The test failed on the old code first: test_reconciling_the_badge_shows_the_jobs_current_reason.

This updates retained alerts’ messages, but the original replacement case remains: the method still only iterates cached entries and never adds active job_alert_B when only cleared job_alert_A was cached. It needs to build job-alert entries from alerts.active.

Why
Etan saw "BrainLayer light maintenance failed; check the maintenance log" 4× (from the 2026-10-02 04:00 nightly light pass). Lead ruling, 2026-10-04: show each alert once per screen, in the words of the job that failed, with a "Show log" action, and clear it after a clean run.
What changed
job_alert:<reason>), with nothing hardcoded, so backend PR A's new wording appears as written.maintenance-*→maintenance.log,backup-daily→backup-daily.log,jsonl-backup→jsonl-backup.log, each path resolved from the job's own LaunchAgent environment). When no log exists yet, or the job is unknown, it reveals the logs folder.ObservabilityReader.readReconciledreconcilesobservability.jsonwithjob-alerts.json(the filejob_alerts.report(key, None)empties) on every read. A cleared alert disappears immediately, not at the next observability write. If another job still has an alert, that one is shown. A missing or unreadable alert file leaves the document unchanged ("unknown", never "no alerts").Live check (read-only): on this machine,
~/.local/share/brainlayer/job-alerts.jsonis{}(mtime 2026-10-03 04:03, the clean light pass), andobservability.json(generated 2026-10-04T09:45Z) hasbackups.error_type = null. The backend clear path works end to end; this PR makes the UI follow it without lag.Render proof

Changes default observability and badge reads to reconcile with on-disk job-alert state and add file-open actions tied to LaunchAgent-resolved paths; malformed alert files are treated as unknown (safe) but behavior shifts when alerts clear before observability updates.
Overview
BrainBar now treats
job-alerts.jsonas the live source of truth for failing jobs:ObservabilityReader.readReconciledmerges it into observability on every read/poll, and the menu badge is reconciled the same way (including on menu open) so a clean run clears alerts immediately instead of waiting for the next observability write.Show log is added on the Dashboard attention item, Backups job alert card, and status menu. It opens the job’s log via
NSWorkspace.open(paths from each job’s LaunchAgent env, including a separate nightly maintenance log). If the file isn’t there yet, surfaces show an explicit message (not a silent folder reveal) while still revealing the logs folder when it exists. The Backups page shows each job alert once (dedicated card + Show log); the group badge and status rows no longer repeat the same sentence. Successful maintenance runs with
warningsin JSON logs surface as a quiet amber note on Jobs without changing healthy status.BrainLayerJobEnvironmentis split into its own module (daemon symlink). Tests, render harness captures, and UI render docs cover alert/cleared/no-log and warning states.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 9255e12.
