This Unity project aims to provide a multi-functional augmented reality, AR, user experience that showcases the possibilities of AR through a futuristic shooter experience that adapts to the user’s real world surroundings. The experience will be specifically aimed toward Android mobile devices and will prioritize showcasing image, object, and ground tracking.
Augmented reality provides a route to user interaction that is not feasible without it. While other XR systems come close, AR allows the user to both interact with an application and their surroundings. One cannot use actual live capture of the real world in virtual reality and mixed reality would be far too disconnected for the actual experience for this application’s purpose. This is why AR was the right solution for this project as it allows users to not only enjoy the interaction of a first-person game but use their real-time, real-world environment to affect the gameplay in a significant way.
As stated above, AR enables the user to change their experience depending on their real-world surroundings. This was a major part of the AR mobile experience and without it a core piece of the app would be missing. For example, a user may still be able to place items in a simulated environment. However, this would not be their environment, but rather a world they have no real connection to. By enabling this type of real-world interaction through AR, one is able to take real world surroundings they are connected with and use it to support a gameplay experience. This enables further emersion within the app by allowing a wide selection of experiences that all differ depending on the location, environment, or setup of gameplay.
