Symbols are pieces of a movie kept for reuse in any project: intros, lower thirds, logo stings.

  • Making one: select clips → Make Symbol (⌥⌘K): name it, tick which titles each use can change. The clips become one use of it.
  • Placeholders: titles, colours, pictures and sounds a use can change, with stable ids (renaming keeps fills). Marked in the symbol's own window.
  • Uses: each has its own fills (duplicates too), renders as a see-through ProRes layer, is picked by what it draws, can keep its shape or fit another canvas, and stretches through the symbol's hold when made longer.
  • Library: .splice files with identities; publish on save; newer versions marked on the timeline, with Update / Update all that keep fills and report any they drop. Rename, duplicate, reveal, trash; break a use apart; keep a missing one.
  • Storage: use renders stay in the cache; saving collects unused bytes.
  • ctl: symbol list/read/make/add/fill/length/fit/update/edit/keep/break/rename/duplicate/delete, placeholder, hold; README and skill updated.

Also a peak limiter in playback and export, and mute/solo in the score editor no longer cancel into silence.

An adversarial design review's 25 findings are addressed (the pop-title render bug, shared fills on duplicates, fill loss on rename, project growth, and the rest), each checked in the app.

Symbols are pieces of a movie kept for reuse in any project: intros,
lower thirds, logo stings. Select clips and choose Make Symbol (⌥⌘K);
they go into your symbols and become one use of it on the timeline.
Each use fills the symbol's placeholders (words, a colour, a picture or
a sound) for itself, renders like a scene, and can be stretched through
the symbol's hold, fitted to another canvas shape, updated when the
symbol is published again (keeping its fills), or broken apart.

- Symbols live as .splice files in your symbols folder, each with its
own identity, and publish only on save. Uses track newer versions,
are marked on the timeline, and update one at a time or all at once.
- The Symbols shelf shows cropped posters; a card's menu edits,
renames, duplicates, reveals or trashes a symbol.
- Renders of uses stay in the cache; saving collects unused bytes.
- Export renders a timeline as a see-through ProRes layer.
- `splice ctl symbol …`, `placeholder` and `hold` drive all of it.

Also: playback and export hold peaks under full scale with a limiter,
and in the score editor mute and solo no longer cancel out into silence.
