Subnetting is the process of dividing a larger network into smaller networks. It helps organize devices, reduce broadcast traffic, improve security, and manage IP address usage.

CIDR: /24
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
This means the device is on the 192.168.1.0/24 network.
CIDR uses a slash to show how many bits are used for the network.
Example:
192.168.1.0/24
The /24 means 24 bits are used for the network portion.

To find subnet block size:
Block size = 256 - subnet mask value
Example:
/26 = 255.255.255.192
256 - 192 = 64
So the subnets increase by 64:
0, 64, 128, 192

If two devices cannot communicate, check:
- Are they in the same subnet?
- Do they have correct subnet masks?
- Do they have the correct default gateway?
- Is routing configured between subnets?
- Is a firewall blocking traffic?
- Are they on the correct VLAN?
Example issue:
Device A: 192.168.1.25 /24
Device B: 192.168.2.25 /24
These devices are on different subnets. They need routing through a gateway to communicate.
Network:
192.168.5.0/24
How many usable hosts?
Answer:
254 usable hosts
Network:
192.168.10.0/26
What is the block size?
Answer:
256 - 192 = 64
Subnets for 192.168.10.0/26:
