Verifying user through external database

Is it possible to store a user's fingerprint on a database other than the FPS's internal memory and use it to authenticate the user? Can that be done using the template in order to save space since a template's size is much smaller than the FP's image?

I would love for this to be possible, the device and its protocol support it, but the arduino does not due to ram constraints.
