Can you give some additional context on the specific error? "it doesn't work for me" isn't actionable.

Some options:

• provide context on the error you see when using react 16 with CRA 4
• try CRA 3 npx create-react-app@3 create-react-app app-name
• try using React 17, for new projects using React latest is a good idea

I am trying to bootstrap a preHooks version so wanted react16 types, even older verion of CRA install react17
try CRA 3 npx create-react-app@3 create-react-app app-name

I'm not sure I follow, both React 16.8+ and 17 support hooks.
Both React 16 and 17 can be used without hooks, so using version 17 may work for you.

Yes package.json edit didn't really work, even I am looking for it.

First, go to the package.json file and change the version of react, react-dom, and react-scripts to the desired version.

Next, clear the node_modules and the package-lock.json file.

Finally, hit:

npm install

To downgrade from react18 to react17, it seems like you also have to downgrade @testing-library/react by one version.
