Support for React Native new architecture & bridgeless mode

Hello Pusher team 👋

The React Native core team just published version 0.76 which comes with the new architecture enabled by default.

Most React Native apps will gradually migrate to the new architecture to benefit from a big performance boost. However, we need the ecosystem to support it.

I was wondering if you're planning on adapting @pusher/pusher-websocket-react-native to support it or if it has already been tested with the new architecture?

@greeeg I am migrating one of my company projects from 0.73 to 0.76 with new architecture and using this package. So far this is working as expected with new architecture.

I think that this library is run in interoop mode as I cannot find files mentioned in the turbo modules guide

The pusher should run for now but eventually, interoop mode will be turned off. When that happens we will need to migrate off pusher for better alternatives I guess 😭

Hi, just adding to this. Running npx expo-doctor results in the following remark regarding this plugin. Even if it does work this isn't adding confidence. Love the product though :)

Hi, will there be support for the new Architecture? I don't have anything meaningful to add but the last comment was April 24, 2025 so wanted to check if this is in the road map.

The React Native team has explicitly committed to keeping the interop layer in place. From the 0.84 release blog:

"No breakages are expected for apps already on the New Architecture, the Interop Layer code required for compatibility remains in place."

And cortinico (RN core maintainer) confirmed this in Discussion #309 as well.

A couple of questions to better understand your situation:

Are you hitting any actual runtime issues, or is this more about the expo-doctor warning and future-proofing?
What version of React Native / Expo are you on?

@Keith-wright Okay, I didn't realize that we could pass a flag to keep the introp layer:

RCT_USE_PREBUILT_RNCORE=0 RCT_REMOVE_LEGACY_ARCH=0 bundle exec pod install

Is there any reason why you guys won't support the new architecture or rewrite this using a Nitro module?

I've tagged this as a feature request for tracking purposes.

New Architecture support would be a significant rewrite on both iOS and Android, and it's not something we have planned in the near term, especially given the interop layer remains supported with no announced removal timeline.

We'll keep this open for community interest and revisit as the React Native ecosystem evolves. If you'd like to contribute, we're open to PRs!
