License clarification #1272

Description

@sluongng

Hi folks,

I noticed you folks relicensed to FSL-1.1-ALv2.

ChatGPT explained the new license to me as

What you can do now

You generally can:

use it internally at your company;
run it in production for your own use;
study the source code;
modify it;
redistribute copies or modified versions, as long as your use is a “Permitted Purpose”;
use it for non-commercial education or research;
provide professional services around it for a customer who is otherwise allowed to use it.

The key grant says you may use, copy, modify, create derivative works, publicly perform/display, and redistribute the software, but only for a Permitted Purpose.

What you cannot do

You cannot make the software available to others as part of a commercial product or service that competes with the original project.

I'm a little bit confused about what would constitute the latter now that OpenAI has acquired tart and that

Cirrus CI will shut down effective Monday, June 1, 2026.

Does that mean the repo is effectively Apache 2.0? or are we counting competition versus OpenAI?
