Community tool using Mzalendo data: Macho ya Wananchi — Kenya parliamentary accountability #1998

Description

Context

I've been building civic accountability tools for Kenya using data from Mzalendo (which mySociety supported). Wanted to share what's been built on top of that data in case it's useful for the mySociety network.

Macho ya Wananchi ("Eyes of the Citizens") — a parliamentary accountability tool for Kenya's 13th Parliament covering:

  • MP attendance records
  • CDF (Constituency Development Fund) utilisation by constituency
  • Bill tracking and status
  • Contribution to constituency-level accountability work

Data sources: Mzalendo, Parliament of Kenya official records, IEBC open data
GitHub: https://github.com/gabrielmahia/civic-decoder (Apache 2.0)
Language: Python / Streamlit

The tool currently covers a subset of parliament (~15 MPs as seed data). Full coverage is the priority — expanding via Mzalendo's API and IEBC open data.

Questions for the mySociety team:

  1. Is there a recommended way to access Mzalendo data programmatically in 2026?
  2. Is there a community channel for developers building on mySociety-supported civic data?

Happy to contribute data or code back if there's an appropriate path.
